- Classic Game Room reviews CASTLEVANIA LORDS OF SHADOW for PS3 Playstation 3 (also available for Xbox 360) published by Konami. This challenging action / adventure game has some of the richest, most epic enviroments seen in gaming and pushes players to the limit with difficulty boss battles and gameplay. Repeat gameplay of levels is a must in order to gain as much health and magic power as possible to even be competitive in later levels. This CGR review of Castlevania Lords of Shadow has gameplay from Castlevania Lords of Shadow showing Castlevania Lords of Shadow review game play on PS3.

This is by far one of my favorite games ever, next to black on the ps2. I can't explain how much I appreciate the great job you do and how much time you put in these reviews. I bought allot of games I really enjoy based on your reviews. Gaming, for me, is a great way to escape and unwind from a stressful life. You and undertow are awesome. Thanks
You have excellent taste my friend
I literally cried when i saw the game ending, the game itself is a piece of art in motion, one of my favorites on the seventh generation console
This is one of those rare games that gets a 'pass' on all the intermissions, the story is gripping, and Patrick Stewart steals the whole fucking game during the loading screens. -I found myself constantly sitting back in the chair in 'awe' of Stewart's narrative pieces, he never does a half-ass job with anything.
I really love the Lords Of Shadow series, I really wish there was more. It's seriously underrated, and yet it has those amazing visuals, interesting enviroments, and challenging combat, and excellent soundtrack in all three games. Play it on hard for extra fun.
Gorgeous game play video...great review! I am looking forward to playing this game as soon as Amazon gets it to my home.
That's a seriously beautiful looking game - great review, really do love watching your reviews, keep em coming!
L00KS incredible! HK for you. Thanks for review. Some of the best graphics/visuals I have EVER seen on a console (35+ years). Yes... stunning
Thank you so much for a very proper review of what in my opinion is one of the best most amazing looking games to date! The soundtrack is amazing, the combat mechanics are great and... It's just simply a really awesome game! I'm subscribing!
Please review Lords of Shadow 2!
I love this game, it is SO gorgeous.
So many cool ideas, many cool boss battles, so many... it is just really wonderfully large.
Great review.
looks impressive! remindes me of darksiders very detail and epic warrior type gameplay!!
I love the death scenes at the end of most of the videos. CLASSIC!!!
Good review, even with the funny change to techno music at the end.
The game is FRUSTATING BUT IN A GOOD WAY, you begin to realize that the game
gets BETTER AND BETTER as you go along. Also the way this game is presented
Is EPIC at ALL TIMES.
Looks great. good review as always..
definitely going to get this one.
thanks.
Just finished this last night. I get off work at around midnight, and it had me playing as soon as i got home, til around 6 in the morning three days in a row. Good flipping times. It was a nice and difficult change of pace(for whatever reason i force myself to play every game on hard mode), but I found only a couple parts to be particularly frustrating... I'm looking at you mechanical clocktower, thanks for forcing me to use a double wall bounce that was never explained once.
@Logicfray Amen. I like the latter choice, but I would also appreciate it if enough attention is gone into both graphics AND gameplay.
This review was more detailed and descriptive than most. I liked it. And you knew exactly what I was thinking (i.e., looks like God of War).
@MrSaturn33 Agreed. Where does it end? I notice the same thinking is never applied to shooters.
Is it worth getting on the 360 because I know it uses 2 disks on that and the visuals may be a problem due to the hardware. If I decide to, I'll just get it on my ps3 since it uses 1 disk and it can handle these visuals.
Whats different between this reboot and the original ones from snes and ps1? What are the pro and cons?
This game and the sequell need remasters i can believe how good this game looks for last gen.
SWSW if it looks good it doesnt need a remaster XD
Sure, why make new games for new systems when you can just rerelease the same games youve already played with slightly enhanced graphics... makes sense smh
getting this for christmas cause ive played old castlevaina and loved them
This is my favorite action game of this generation....and there have been ALOT this generation.
is this CV story line tied into past CV or is it a new one with no ties, I'd like to get it if it was a new story since I haven't played the other ones well not since NES days
Aw yea, I remember the games that would leave you with a HEART-POUNDING boss fight, those are hard to find now-a-days.
It did have the chupacabras, they made me laugh in the second one too
Did anyone else hear the Metal Gear Solid music leading to the castle kitchen? I thought that was a nice mood lightener.
Great review.
(It would be cool if "Second Life" looked like this.)
Is there a 12 hour cut of LOTR ? Where can I get it ?
This game have so low fps like 20-30 on xbox360 and ps3 too?Or PS3 version better in this plan?
I like your reviews, you got a subscriber
i think that how Mark sais ''Lord''(especially the L)is awesome :D
Epic. In some ways it is more enjoyable than GoW series. I especially like the variation on environments that give you the sense of being in a vast land. The different boss fights. Also, you keep encountering new enemies right up until the end of the game. Cannot wait for LOS 2 in February.
@TheGenesisfan93 would you rather have a game with crappy gameplay and great graphics? or great gameplay with crappy graphics?
To me graphics are nice, but it's the gameplay that really counts.
best reviews ever keep up the great work!
Does this game have a DIFFICULTY setting????
Yes, and its amazing especially on the hardest setting. Play it once on easy to get the story and get used to the controls, then go all out where it is almost 1 hit kill. Bliss.
@flamavana There is. Its called the last guardian. SotC is actually a prequel to Ico as well.
is the video realy glitchy or is my computer/internet playing up ?
@martialartssucks02 was is for the PS2?
Classic Game Room is one of my favorite reviews. Mark is a great reviewer. Also love Angry Video Game Nerd although wish he did more current games.
The game is pretty fun once you start getting into it but it does drag a bit in the earlier stages.
The ending video though is so epic I had to record it and ended up just beating the last boss tons of times to do it cause it's like WOW moment if you played the game. Dunno if the wow factor is there if you just watch it without playing the game tho.
I just finished this game... I've played every Castlevania and LOVED this one.. Granted it switches everything up (even story)... But it's a completely different beast than like God of War.. I dug the seriousness of it, the music, the presentation.... It's a terrific origin story (Don't watch the Lords of Shadow 2 trailer if you've never played this!) I really don't think it could have been done any better in this style. I do hope we eventually get that 1999 game though. Well worth a purchase...
Based off your review, this game sounds perfect for me. Always loved the older ones.
Can't wait for the PC version to come out, preordered it.
This game is amazing. Then ending ranks among the best video game endings ever as far as I'm concerned. Well worth the purchase. Fine video too as usual, I've quickly become a big fan of Classic Game Room. All hail Herzog Zwei!
@Snotnarok Fairr enough. I apologize. My mistake.
Just completed it. After watching the cinematic after the credits, without spoiling anything I want a Castlevania set in that!!
The collection has held its value.
its an epic and awesome game, man, the music and the scenarios are just magnific, the entire journey fells just like that, a beautifull and macig journey.
Look,my major point is with GOW,I don't know what Shadow of the Colossus is but if it had something then you tell me what they copied or if LoS did it well?
@AlexRmetroid Not Frogger...>_> Frogs, the first game with a jumping character and platform elements. Rebound is pong on its side, two horizontal paddles going back and forth with a vertical divider in the middle and a ball to bounce back, that ball basically acts as the Frog in Frogs and the paddles the lily pads.
when i first beat the game it felt so fucking good...very pleasing
@martialartssucks02 Hmm, I see what you mean. It's just that you seem to imply that this game is very much a GOW clone and you were using the whip thing as leverage as to why that is so. Forgive me for being mistaken.
I would have LOVED to have seen the same beautifully 3D rendered graphics on a 2D plane. Because, honestly, Castlevania is a 2D platformer.
@Chatpage I havnt played the old games, but swords in these type of games rock! they could have included other types of weapons id reckon for replay value. like swords, maces and spears and what not.
@Mykayel I won't try to rip off your comment but I think should be noted that those that think this is a GOW ripoff assume that all of the elements in GOW are original. Remember Castlevania had the whip for a main weapon since the first game in 1986 ;)
now if someone plays pt 2 before this one they won't fully appreciate nor grasp the story.....further more the early nes castlevanias paved an amazing path for this franchise.
Mark has one of the most iconic voices since William Shatner.
@TheGenesisfan93 and they're still good. I forgot to mention that.
After reading your comment, I agree with you. I went back and replayed some of the 1st ones. Does have a similar feel. Even though it is slight. Went back to classic feeling (Fantastical) as opposed to Rock n Roll edge. I hope Lords of Shadow 2 has a PC release. The 1st begged for one with the gorgeous art design and texture work. Some of the slowdown showed it pushed these systems to their edge (Not from crappy programming). I'd still say it's my favorite overall game this Gen. w/ Dead Space 1.
@samule767 Not the whole Kojima Production, it's Kojima only. He actually altered some storylines and made the main character more relatable/appealing(redesigning some of the lead character, Gabriel, who he felt needed a "more heroic face"! Originally, Gabriel's design resembled a classic barbarian before Kojima arrived.) Kojima also oversaw the Japanese localization of the game, employing a number of voice actors from the Japanese versions of Metal Gear Solid.
I could like this a million times for the Lords of Acid reference alone.
CGR always has the best reviews
do u have to play the older castlevania games to understand this one?(storyline)cuz i just started the game and it seems kinda bold and random.
It's a reboot, so it's unnecessary
***** That's good to know, the only Castlevania I've ever completed is Symphony of The Night and I've just picked up LOS.
***** It is reboot. It tells origin of Dracula in a different way, but they did tell that in previous Castlevanias, like Lament of Innocence
*****
is a reboot, all the plot elements are completely different
@owtenur they still are, when they announced this game they announced another 2-D Castlevania
Yes.
There's:
-Easy: Esquire
-Normal: Warrior
-Hard: Knight
-Very hard: Paladin
And after finishing any level you get a "trial" which is basically a challenge like beating a timer on a boss or defeating X amount of enemies before finishing the level.
@DStrike0083
Wrong. 1. Kratos uses two blades on chains, not a whip. Quite different in practice. 2. The style of combat and combos using the blades of chaos in God of War is quite different to the previous 3D Castlevania games. 3. Lords of Shadow departs from the previous 3D Castlevania games in combat style. The combos and attacks are not similar to the previous Castlevania games. Rather, they closely reflect the style of attacks used in the God of War series.
Is there a difficulty setting?
@BillyCauseyjr That would be someting to think about... It would be pretty hard tho, being that finishing a series to start it over again wouldn't make sense, but it sounds good...
does this game contain burning pepole with monsters and cutting them in half???
so when did the Castlevania turn into 3D RPG style game?
Guess I'm a button masher too.
The demo drove me crazy with the magical horse riding bit.
@sbcmarine81 yes I know its came out but when does its came out ?
A truly, truly beautiful game. Can't wait to see how the next one go ;D
it's on steam sale right now -75% ultimate edition! :)
as soon as you said "nuke from orbit" I immidiately thought of Aliens
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, deserves a CGR Review since it functions like an elegant, challenging, throw back to Simon's Quest for the NES!
@TheInflicted I know what you are saying, and yes there IS a castle, but it seems to be later on in the game.
first view :D:D awsome vid ... is this game for PC too ?
What about the mentions of many God of War themes and motifs?
@Mykayel OH MAN YOU ARE SO RIGHT! I like your reductio ad absurdium arguments. I think you should say something to Zero Punctuation with his "Like God of War, BUT!" stamp.
@NeverendingTwilight1 I completely agree and I was born in the 90's. It's all good though, I was born in the golden age of Nintendo, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Mario 64, Zelda. It was awesome back then.
I JUST bought this game! Cannot wait to play it!!
How do I didnt herd on that game ? when does it come out ?
i like this game but i cant finish because i get the message say unhandle error is sucks
when does or did this game come out??
this game will be in my collection for SURE
I would like to see a castlevania game that has the style of the old Dracula film with Bela Lugosi.
So far, I've seen a lot of mixed reviews for this game. Some people say it's bad because it borrows so much from other games, and people like Mark say it's really good because of the visuals and gameplay. I guess this is a game I'll have to pick up and try for myself.
Your review is spot on
Totally agree with this review! Well done, Mark!
Anyone realize that the music at the end was Tae-Bo?
@davidnabbit If they didn't do that, there would be delay when you tried to change direction.
has Mark ever reviewed Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter?..He'd like that
i wish more games would put more emphasis on production value like this game
Games like this make me ask why games call of duty still exist. We've come so far, we don't have to settle for crap
@Rededify you said it, if only theyd pick up the fisics whip consept again
Wow! This one looks great, I'm amazed!
actually yes! at first in the development this game was supposed to only be known as lord of shadow but konami with kojima production made this game a reboot to the series also they was planning to made this game a remake to super castlevania that was released way back on the SNES in the erly stages of the development.
plz review Fable III, when its comes this month
