Rearward firing and forward_firing_pivoting_backwards, that's the distinguishing. I'm not an engineer, but I can imagine that launching backwards on a fast flying plane has its problems, that's why I was sure expecting the new systems be pivoting, Uturn rockets

Their function was simple, to show a signature that said I am a bigger more powerful target, and would draw cruise missiles and other weapons to them instead of the manned ship. If the fish was destroyed the other fish was still active and it would reel in the cable where another fish was installed and reeled back out. Of coarse I said why not make them remote control and use several with a weapons platform on them as well that fell on deaf ears. Also built another high speed winch for the black hawk and it was for retrieving and debarking from the helicopter in combat situations. Both were proto types. Both were built here in Canada for the US military.

The Tu160 ain't a slow bomber it has a cruising speed of 2200kmh or mach1.85 with a top speed of 3000kmh or 2.45 mach! Most fighters will have to be in full afterburn to keep up.

What makes anyone think that a missile would need to make a 180 turn? There's absolutely no reason why a missile cannot fire in a rearward direction. It a big aircraft with a large weapons bay .

You should read this to get EDUCATED...Tu-160 latest upgrade was already 2 years old and video is announcing now. However, one part of upgrades is addition of air to air missiles for protections from missiles and to shoot down any aerial threats either from ground or air. This seems to be more like defence against cheap drone fighters coming in next decade. Backward facing radar for use with IR missiles sound like overkill. For this something like IRST facing backward will do. I my opinion it will be probably something more like flying TOR SAM with very nice ability to shoot down even AA missiles like Amraam. And I will not be surprised that actually TOR missiles will be modified for this bomber protection purpose.

Rear radars has been on bombers for many decades. Missiles that can take on targets behind is not new. And fighters shoot att much longer range so this system is not a gamechanger.
Fun fact. The fictional Mig-31 Firefox (from the 1982 movie of the same name), also had a rearward facing missile defense system; thought-controlled of course.. 🙂
