When you say "secession worlds" are you referring to the Separatists holdouts that existed after the clone wars that the Empire fought in the reconquest of the rim campaigns? And what is Operation Domino, was it a rebel or imperial operation?
@@obsidian53-B No, I'm referring to a passage in The Essential Guide to Warfare (although the Separatist holdouts are equally interesting). The passage in question briefly introduced Operation Domino, the first Rebel strategy which called for planets to openly revolt against the Empire as opposed to the subtle hit-and-run strategy adopted later. Several unnamed worlds boldly joined the Rebellion and were quickly crushed by the Imperial military, these were dubbed the "Secession Worlds". Basically this is comparable to the Separatists during the Clone Wars as this was an attempt by the Rebels to actually hold territory as opposed to clandestine sneak attacks. Apparently Mon Calamari was the only successful world to do this. It's a part of the lore I'm pretty interested in since they aren't mentioned anywhere else.

I feel like a story about either the Yuuzhan Vong War in real canon (aka movies/tv shows) or a story that ties in Luke's new jedi order that formed after the fall of the empire would be really interesting
#AskEck do we have any numbers about how many jedi there were before Order 66? I always see people complaining about there always being more jedi after it but if 1% survived and there were 10,000, for example, there would still be quite a few. Any thoughts on this?
For those interested, I have some non-canon Canon-derived SSD fates from my own personal canon: - Intimidator was disarmed and disabled and converted into an orbital museum ship at Kuat. After the First Order gained control of Kuat, they attempted to reassemble the ship, but it was destroyed by sabotage. - Annihilator was captured by a pirate faction that renamed it Liberty's Misrule and used it as the centerpiece for a nomadic fleet for a while. They eventually came into conflict with the New Republic who seized the ship, disarmed it and converted it into a hospital ship for disaster relief named Benevolence. - The First Order's Eclipse suffered badly from lack of maintenance and spare parts during their early exile, and attempts to modernize and automate it had mixed results. It eventually became a lightly-armed mobile prison in the Unknown Regions. - A secret 14th Executor-class, Shadow Hand, was built by Palpatine fanatics in the Deep Core during the New Republic period. They unleashed it on the galaxy after the First Order's invasion, declaring them to be heretics, and it was eventually destroyed. - I also had Zsinj's Iron Fist, but as a Mandator-III rather than an Executor. He attempted to use it to take over Mas Ameda's Imperial Core Remnant around 15 ABY, but it was destroyed by a combined ICR/New Republic task force.

Of course they can do tremendous damage, but the costs of repairing and maintaining such a ship without vast infrastructure must be staggering.

You connect several wagons together and then, place a speeder that attaches to the first wagon using this gun and can quickly pull several of them.

3:40 seems obvious to me why Palpatine never gave Thrawn an SSD. If what you said was true about it being a symbol of favour in the Imperial Hierarchy, giving Thrawn an SSD would've been too big of a step towards favouring aliens, which considering that the Emperor was very much anti-alien, would've upset his followers in the Imperial military and might have even led to mutiny and desertion of the more fanatical officers in the Imperial Navy who were anti-alien.
Hmm honestly i don’t know if we can use this as one of the main reasons. Considering that in Legends most/nearly all remaining Imperial Remnant and Warlord Factions supported him and even gave him big parts of their fleets show him somewhat of a trust. Even the Pentastar Alignment which was kinda a Imperial Hardliner-Faction supported him and was ready to give him one of their SSD‘s. And in Canon I also think that the First Order, which is also a Hardliner-Faction is accepting Thrawn.
@@Lukas-mk8so true however at that point in time, Thrawn was the best commander for the Empire to win the war with the New Republic. If the different factions had any other option, they would take it. They might not have liked Thrawn but they would have begrudgingly given him aid if it meant putting the Empire back on top. On the subject of support, the differing factions didn't really give Thrawn much to work with in terms of ships and military personnel, causing him to raid shipyards and clone existing personnel to wage his war. With that said, I think anybody would agree that this made Thrawn's near victory over the NR even more impressive since he nearly overthrew the New Republic with nothing but scraps. Getting back to the main point, the Emperor knew that giving Thrawn an SSD would have severely upset the political balance within the Empire, despite the slew of military victories the floating city of turbolasers would've brought them. With regards to Canon, the First Order has been shown, albeit in ancillary media, to have been shown recruiting aliens to their ranks so there would be no question of them accepting Thrawn if he had joined them. He might not have been favoured by some but his results speak volumes

@@michaelandreipalon359 Yeah, the Hurrim were a real pain in the ass. Still, for some reason I'm having trouble recalling, Palleon found having to use them degrading.
@@Falchion1984 The use of Preybirds was explained by the fact that the empire had too few shipyards and those they had could barely keep up with the production/overhaul of bigger ships. Due to this, they had no place to produce Tie fighters and had replaced them with other units, that were buy from the outside. Remember that this book ends with the signing of the final peace treaty between the empire and the republic. This means that they could start allocating some of the materials to Tie production, and after a few years when the war with the Vong began, they could be in a much better situation when it comes to the facilities for building ships and fighters.
I’ve always gone with the assumption that there were 12 or 13 based on the Executor class (1 for each fleet command and for Vader) and the others were based off of other designs with a lot of them being built after RotJ, with “Super” being used as way of saying that the cruiser or command ship or dreadnought (depending on the role) was just larger than the standard ISD. For example, the Eclipse is a super star destroyer that was commissioned after RotJ, but it wasn’t SSD based on the Executor model nor share the profile or role (its a unique shaped dreadnought while the Executor is an arrowhead shaped command ship)
Could be interesting to see a video on why Thrawn was never put in command of a super star destroyer. Though I would expect it might have something to do with Thrawn being too independent-minded than Palpatine would want to grant that much power to.
Hey Justin have you looked into the SW Legends book series called “Galaxy of Fear”? There’s some interesting spooky creations throughout the series, and good ol Thrawn even shows up in one of the books.
SSDs are massive assets, both politically and militarily speaking to their owners and although expensive to maintain in respect of maintenance, resources and manpower. Their value is in the fact that despite their vulnerabilities, they are still deadly killing machines of war, that can turn the tide of any battle they fight in like for New republic at Borelais or enable a state in the post endor era to punch massively over its weight like Imperial Remnant at Orinda.
13 seems like a much better nunber than 50, even if the galaxy is huge and most systems would never see even 1, having there be 50 (or more) makes them feel too common
@AskEck: think you could do a video on the differences between the Clone-Jedi relationships of Canon and pre TCW legends. Thrawn didn't get one because according to (Legends) Sidious was xenophobic and had a dislike for non-humans. He tolerated Thrawn because of his excellent tactical mind. This was explained a little bit in one of the Legends novels which is part of a trilogy telling the story of Thrawn's return to reclaim the empire's glory. I appologize that I can't remember the name of the trilogy.
fascinating video. Thx for the different perspective. I only say different because, i was a big fan of the original canon now known as "Legends" thx to the evil Mouse and my impression was a little different but less well researched i will admit. That being said, i also admit i never owned the dedicated SW fan materials such as RPG, or tech manuals etc, so I'm no expert however i did explore deep into the original canon expanded universe novels starting of course with Timothy's epic Heir to the Empire trilogy in paperback. Just to use that one ex-Canon (again because the MOUSE says so) as an example, I loved how the numbers mentioned in that series were reasonable in the sense that despite a galactic sized empire Zahn chose to be conservative and even explained in terms of manpower, assuming humanoid lifeforms which we know the original Empire was dedicated too per the Emperor. So much that the introduction of a "mere" 200 Dreadnought heavy cruisers that preceded the Empire's ISD could tip the balance in the war between the Imperial remnant and the New Republic. I won't dispute that it could be argued easily that such suggested numbers within a larger less defined situation fleet wise is way to small for galactic scale conflict but when i see modern canon suggesting things like 25,000+ ISD's at the Empire's peak, i'm sorry it just sounds like a ridiculous figure that some author of a tech manual pulled out of his head figuring well that's galactic scale. (if only the ST universe had had those numbers at Worf 349) This is the first though i heard of there being so potentially so many SSD's per original canon. That kind of messed up my thinking. I thought the number was much less, around 12 or so. Before Disney of course and the First Order BS. anyway. Fun video. Thx for putting it together!
#AskEck: What do you think about the celestials being nerfed so much in Canon? Anakin on Mortis was almost like a full-potential Anakin, and then they just left the whole idea end there in the clone wars. Also are your thoughts about the Son and the Father returning in Ahsoka season 2, or maybe in the Mandoverse film?
So, the Super Star Destroyer has always been one of my favorite Star Wars ships, but when we learn how many of them there MIGHT have been, or even just how many we can confirm existed, and when the Emperor's tactic after the loss of the Death Star was "let's just build another, bigger one, and in 1/10th the time!", it does sort of throw shadows on Thrawn's concerns about tying up too many resources into single, massive assets, when a more numerous, spread out fleet of more adaptable ships would be better, when its basically almost never apparent that the Empire, wirh its tens to hundreds of thousands of worlds can ever really run out of resources, places to make use of them, and people to do so. Then tbe First Order, coming out of practically nothing, had Starkiller Base, as well as the Supremacy... I know that, in several ways Legacy never totally mattered, and certainly not since the Disney buyout, but it's kind of too bad that I don't recall Emperor Krayt, or some element of his New Sith Empire, having something comparable to a Star Dreadnought. I don't know what it would have been, or been capable of, but I feel like it would have been awesome, and given the Galactic Alliance fleet one more reason to always stay on the move, and not allow their enemies to find them, for fear of such firepower. They had the cool Predator Starfighters, so it might've been neat to see those launch from something akin to an SSD. 😊
Is there not a specific impulse that needs to be figured in all this too? Such as the matter flying out the butt end is the top speed and not the accumulated speed of months or years of trickle power.
How the hell do you manage to hide a SSD in the Coruscant cityscape? I mean, did they cut a big hole, drop it in, and re-build the city around it? or did they actually build in inside the city?
Quick Question-If the Emperor personally gave out super star destroyers to those he deemed worthy, was there any plans to give Grand Admiral Thrawn a super star destroyer? Did Thrawn command any in Legends?
Thrawn never had a Super Star Destroyer... which is probably a good thing considering what he could do with a dozen Star Destroyers and their associated support ships (and most of the Katana Fleet). Though as others have pointed out, if you gave Thrawn the choice of a Super Star Destroyer or the dozen Star Destroyers that would provide equivalent firepower, he'd take the Star Destroyers. As impressive as an Executor class is, it has the same problem as the Death Star - it can only be in one place at a time.
I always thought it was just lazy writting, the Empire had plenty of forces there to overwhelm the rebels in Return of the Jedi. They just disapear after the Death Star is destroyed..... amazing job Lucas....
Which Battlefront is that background gameplay from? The graphics look too crisp and clean to be from the OG Battlefront 2, yet all of the HUD elements say otherwise. I've only played the PS2 and (OG) Xbox version, though. I also don't recognize the map that fight is taking place on... PC, perhaps?

Think of the damage beams of water collected over a kilometer of area that would create. The Lusankya is probably one of my favourite Star Wars ships, even though I haven't read much Legends. Getting to see the orbital bombardment and the ram against the Vong made it stand out
Did you see the fan animation of the Lusankya flying out of Coruscant's upper levels during a battle? One of the most impressive fan films to me.
Thanks for answering my question Eck, I’ve been watching your channel for years and I feel so honored, Happy New Year!
50 SSDs across canon and legends, that's pretty crazy!
#AskEck: What are your thoughts on Operation Domino and how the Galactic Civil War would've gone if it was successful? I wish we could've gotten more lore about the "Secession Worlds" mentioned in The Essential Guide to Warfare that the Empire crushed early on.
There’s also the Mid Rim offensive. Wonder how that would’ve gone if it was successful too
I can't believe you didn't mention the ISSD that was turned into a pleasure casino by a pirate that would float and move around to avoid taxes and planetary governments.

#AskEck How different and effective would the empire have been if they had continued to produce clones instead of training stormtroopers?
#AskEck If you were to design your own SSD what would it be like? As in what purpose it would fulfill, what weaponry it would have and how big it would be? But keep it realistic.
This answered so much more than the question asked and I admire the commitment to your fan base. I didn't know each SSD had a unique history.
#AskEck: What planets/areas of space do you think should be expanded on further, or that you would simply like to be further talked about? Whether it be minor background details or excerpts, or full on settings?
I feel like a story about either the Yuuzhan Vong War in real canon (aka movies/tv shows) or a story that ties in Luke's new jedi order that formed after the fall of the empire would be really interesting
Imagine if there was hockey in Star Wars
It's a great question to be answered and there are a few of them active after Endor.
How weird, this didn't show up in my subscriptions. Thought it worth you knowing
#AskEck do we have any numbers about how many jedi there were before Order 66? I always see people complaining about there always being more jedi after it but if 1% survived and there were 10,000, for example, there would still be quite a few. Any thoughts on this?
I love your short story idea for the Reaper.
For those interested, I have some non-canon Canon-derived SSD fates from my own personal canon:
- Intimidator was disarmed and disabled and converted into an orbital museum ship at Kuat.
#AskEck How much stronger would the Rebellion be if they set up in the unknown regions?
My take here is that it depends on their ability to handle the chaotic nonsense that goes on in the unknown regions.
It really wouldn't make a difference it would just cause them to use up more fuel because they're further away from many of their targets.
@mightheal the obvious logic to me anyway is that they are much harder to locate, let alone reach that area because of the shifting hyperspace lanes.
@@dragonclaw4159 The problem is the majority of their targets are on the other side of the galaxy so you're adding like a week of travel time just to attack something from that base.
@@mightheal if they had set up in the unknown regions, wouldn't the locations they target reflect that fact?
#AskEck it always says "a long time ago in a galaxy far away" so what would present day star wars be like? Would that be like the legacy era?
Happy New Year, EckhartsLadder!
I find it interesting how prestige vessels that werent seriously intended to face combat (even the biggest rebel ships couldn't hope to win an engagement) had to be pressed into actual battles. Of course they can do tremendous damage, but the costs of repairing and maintaining such a ship without vast infrastructure must be staggering.
You missed the SSD that was captured by Pirates in Canon called the Annihilator and renamed Liberty's Misrule used as their base for a pirate kingdom in the Outer Rim. And the one thought to he sucked into a black hole.

@@pupulauls See, that thing on the back that LOOKS like a gun, apparently isn't a gun.
It's just a targeting thinger for the tow cable, I think. Hence the question.
There was one book in the legends where the rebellion finds these T-47s. It is noticed there that they were used to transport repulsor wagons on this planet.
You connect several wagons together and then, place a speeder that attaches to the first wagon using this gun and can quickly pull several of them.
The super star destroyer are almost like characters, they can help tell a good story and play in major parts. Many battles can surround these ships. I really wish Disney had gone in this direction, highlighting some legend stories. But money tops everything.

I remember clearly reading the novels (which you refer to as Legends) that there were only 13 super star destroyers, one for each grand admiral. Officially 12 for 12 grand admirals minus Thrawn, with Lusankya as the extra one that was hidden under Coruscant.
Ah yes, another video to watch from Eck. This’ll be good
Personally in Thrawn's Revenge, a Bellator is the perfect SSD. Big enough to take on capitol ships but small enough for you to build an armada around it that can handle snub fighters, punch through enemy fleets and space stations.
#AskEck What was the planet of Coruscant like before the megalopolis? Or perhaps, what planets were terraformed and how?
I like the one ISB built in secret on Coruscant. Straight destroyed sections, in "Legends", during Xwing Rogue Squadron. Straight savage to hide and destroy.
The first ship he mentioned is said ship
#AskEcks I remember in KOTOR hearing the story from Canderous about his encounter with a fire breathing meteorite. We now think it was a Yuuzhan Vong scout ship. What was it doing there thousands of years before the invasion? How did it get there before the rest of the Vong? Why'd they wait so long to invade if they had ships in the galaxy during the Old Republic?
Sorry in advance if these questions sound dumb, I haven't gotten around to reading the books on the Vong war yet.
I'm kind of surprised that you didn't mention Razor's Kiss in relation to the Iron Fist. It didn't really last long enough to need a profile of its own, but its use in the Zsinj campaign was probably at least worth a mention.
Nice video!👍I've always thought that Admiral Drommel and his SSD Guardian would be an interesting component of an roleplaying campaign.🍻
What if the Chiss (possibly including Thrawn) had sided with the rebellion?
This is easily one of the videos I've seen from you!
@eckhartsladder do u think the mandator IV from episode 8 could stand against any of the SSDs and if so could u explain why especially by type like a bellator vs an executor or assertor
The Black Fleet Crisis wasn’t just military sci-fi. It was Hunt for Red October/80s military fiction in space.
That story idea for the reaper is a fantastic one 😊 a series of short stories from a ships point of view could be really interesting give how many scifi creators say the hero ship is part of the cast🤔

#AskEck At or around the Hand of Thrawn duology, the Imperial Remnant was using non-TIE Fighter craft, such as Preybirds. After the Bastian Accords, and/or joining the GA during the Vong War, did this continue or were they using TIE's again?
They always used TIE variants, even in legacy of the force. The only time those ladybirds are mentioned are in Zahns stuff
@@JJJBunney001 Really? I could've sworn they were using Preybirds in Hand of Thrawn because SIENAR had declared neutrality, or something like that. Anyhow, thanks for the reply.
@@michaelandreipalon359 Yeah, Palleon didn't like them either.
I remember a long time ago there was only said to be four SSDs. Executor, Iron Fist, and that was it
Now make a video on every super star destroyer in detail so i can put them in lore accurate positions in EAW
I don’t think Thrawn would like the idea of a super star destroyer considering his opinion on the Death Star
These videos are legends!
13 seems like a much better nunber than 50, even if the galaxy is huge and most systems would never see even 1, having there be 50 (or more) makes them feel too common
#askeck What would you say is the most powerful faction in Star Wars canon?
@AskEck: think you could do a video on the differences between the Clone-Jedi relationships of Canon and pre TCW legends. I think its an interesting compare and contrast that could use a breakdown versus what is usually seen, which is going over them in the Canon-Legends melded format you usually see.
Ships of that sheer size existed for one purpose, intimidation!
Put to the task though against ships with a smaller silhouette and more maneuverable...

another SSD to note would be the Aggressor which was the flagship of grand admiral josef grunger who would defect from the empire and claim himself to be the new emperor. the aggressor would soon be led into battle against another grand admiral danetta pitta who had a torpedo sphere as his flagship. due to the superior firepower of pittas torpedo sphere, grunger would ram the aggressor into pittas torpedo sphere killing both grand admirals and the aggressor perishing

Agreed, he would be interesting.
Just my two cents. Dume the Loth-wolf. Of course if they look as bad (IMHO) as the Loth-cats then they can forget it. 😅😅😅
And then there are all the ssd’s that haven’t been created yet because some lazy writers haven’t written them into their stories yet… it’s like saying how many Jedi survived 66? All of them that haven’t been written yet.
If the New Republic had many of the super star destroyers, they would have been used as mobile command centers for the New Republic Fleet.
Supposedly six Subjugator class warships like the Malevolence existed during the Clone War according to the RPG books. Do you think it would be interesting to see more of these ships pop up?
That'd be pretty cool. It wouldn't really work on the Vong though...
How can you not have touched on the Night Hammer, i mean it an SSD but it can cloak and its service under Admiral Daala

#AskEch where does a moff fit into the imperial military? I thought they were politicians, but is it a rank in the navy too? Is grand admiral higher?
also what game ar eyou playing in the videos
fascinating video.
(if only the ST universe had had those numbers at Worf 349)
This is the first though i heard of there being so potentially so many SSD's per original canon.
(In rebels with the bird of Ahsoka and the World Between Worlds they did bring back the idea a bit, but not as much as they could have explored that region of Star Wars which I really like). Also are your thoughts about the Son and the Father returning in Ahsoka season 2, or maybe in the Mandoverse film?
I think they are gonna use abeloth, the Mother

Very interested in knowing why Thrawn didn't get an SSD
Is there not a specific impulse that needs to be figured in all this too? Such as the matter flying out the butt end is the top speed and not the accumulated speed of months or years of trickle power.
How the hell do you manage to hide a SSD in the Coruscant cityscape? I mean, did they cut a big hole, drop it in, and re-build the city around it? or did they actually build in inside the city?
In legends, considering there were 25k star destroyers. 50 SSDs is not bad.
I want to know how many senators served during the clone wars
Wait the ARC Hammer was an SSD? Empire at War Lises to me
#AskEck I know you alluded to making a video about this just now, but why did Thrawn not have a SSD?

#AskEck Could you do a video focusing on the relationship between Jedi and Clones in Canon and Legends, particularly the similarities and differences between the two continuities. It would be nice to know why Jedi and Clones are far more friendly with each other in Canon while things are far colder between the two in Legends.
@eckhartsladder so, writing fictional tactics is always kinda hard to keep realistic, right?
I just had a shower thought.
“Imperial officer guide: Downpour Protocol”
Imagine, a ISD is hovering in atmo over a city, and it starts to pour. There’s a reason the ship is so close, so it doesn’t want to go far but-
There’s only so many edges rain would pool and pour off an ISD. Think of the damage beams of water collected over a kilometer of area that would create. Being hit by would could not only damage infrastructure, but wound or drown friendly troops
Thus, for my own fan fic, I’ve added it as a rebel tactic to use storms as a time to strike, when an ISD needs to leave its position to avoid this situation
Hey, video idea if you ever wanna do the math on how much water would actually pour from a few ISD points
