Back when I was a teenager, I couldn't afford Massive or Absynth. But I had demo versions with a bunch of presets, though I couldn't save my own, and it would like... hiss at me violently every few seconds. So I would sample a single note into a very cheap sampler plug-in, using "Orion", one of the cheapest DAWs of the early 2000s. I got so much mileage out of this bootleg setup back then. I even faked some basic "sampler synth stuff" like automating the sampler's filter and basic envelopes, or layering presets samples of them to make my own "new patches", which I could save in the sampler plug-in because that wasn't a demo version m What a time that I never ever wanna go back to ever again!

Massive X has been my favourite softsynths since it's release. The biggest issue with Massive X was the UI, which was simply unfinished at its release. The UI has become acceptable after a couple of updates, but it remains underdeveloped compared to other modern softsynths. The quality of the sound engine however is unmatched imho, and that's what matters the most in the end. No other softsynth I've tried can beat it, though Pigments is getting closer with recent updates (and beats it by miles with new features every iteration). It's a pity NI has apparently completely lost the plot, and has left Massive X dangling with only meagre updates and useless preset packs being released since its debut. The sound engine of Massive X is simply ahead of its time, and has so much potential, but NI forgot it also needs a modern UI to go with it, and the competition isn't standing still....
Massive X has the best sounding sound engine I've ever heard among all of top VSTi synths. The quality of the oscillators, filters, effects and the whole voice structure is absolutely outstanding. It delivers high definition sound in the highest possible quality. It beautifully sits in the overall mix with other instruments regardless of the sound type - whether it's a bass, synth, lead or pads, MX can do all of this. You can spend hours and hours with knob tweaking getting awesome and never ending timbre variations producing very fresh, juicy, modern and innovative sounds. MX covers everything - it can sound very analogish, smooth, dirty, hard, digital it only depends on your sound programming skills what kind of sound you are able to dial on it. Although there are other top notch VSTi synths which also sound very good and tasty, MX is still a level higher than anything else if we consider the engine sound quality and the timbre variability it can produce.
Honestly using massive is such a treat. The modulation options are so vast but also quite intuitive. Not that it's ever gonna happen but an updated sound engine, expanded wavetable options and a bigger filter selection is all it needs these days.
Noticed that your overused M-Audio KeyStudio 25 white keys are now brown. If you need a brand new used one with white keys, they are only about $50 everywhere, but then you lose that nostalgic look of your favorite keyboard controller.

This time's suggestion is YAMAHA DS55, a still stylish (almost) Preset version of TX81z, with (what's new to me) auto acomp, (unlike the V50): zero drum samples but FM's instead & at least one pattern programmed by German/international musiclegend/genius Reinhold Heil, who already was blessed (helping) to program sounds for the rare '82-FM test balloon GS2 (heard in a recent interview) P. S.: Since my GS2 neither has NENA's "Ganz Oben" breathy bell-patch nor the one from Cosa Rosa's "Traumstation", I assume Reinhold having kept the very best sounds solely to himself.🥳😂🤣
It drives me crazy that no one ever noticed Super 8, that is a super good sounding synth with a wonderful clean interface. If only there was a hardware version of that.
Interesting. Tempted especially as the second jam sounds like an artist I love. But a rabbit hole I’m not going to explore. I’ll stick with my budget hardware synths. Got my Woove box this week and my JT-4000 (along with a nice Ibanez acoustic bass) are on the way. Plus I have to get up to speed with my pro Vs mini too. So more than enough to keep me occupied 😀
Yes it’s an electro acoustic. But nowadays it’s easy to add the electrics so long as you don’t mind cutting holes in things. I modded my Spanish guitar with a kit that cost me €8 including the electrics and postage. It’s now a feature on many of my tracks.
Mr. Florian, thank You very much for another cool episode)) I guess “Maschine + “ is the ideal “victim” (we already had seen an MPC One episode). Now it’s Maschine’s turn😄
Seconding this! Was going to say I was wondering when a piece of NI hardware would get the Bad Gear treatment, and from what the internet tells me, the Maschine+ is begging for it. 😅
Great episode as usual, bought Massive last year for the sale price of £40 and FM8 at the same time for £8 two great synths for bargain prices, their normal price is £129. NI has updated both to be Mac silicone compatible so they should be supported for some time yet.
Wow… jam two gave me chills, goosebumps and made my nips rock hard bro. Nice. Also helps that I’ve been playing a lot of cadence of hyrule with the rival_a soundtrack… really felt like it could fit in that game.
Agree, this is still one of my fave synths. While Massive X can do more, its is such a behemoth and the relative simplicity of original Massive makes it that much more usable. And like anything powered by Reaktor, it sounds huge.
@@AudioPilz Of course! How is that even a question? LOL Actually, I can imagine the Easel would make for quite the episode, it's loved by many but it's probably one of the quirkiest synths ever brought to market...

For the computers of its day, it was great. Dialing computing back two decades and Massive was hitting it just right on sound quality, features, and GUI design.
I never really loved Massive, but I did understand its power and popularity. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't use it on a few of my released productions, too. I remember spending a good few days programming a disco stab sound in Massive.
massive is my favourite soft synth, been using it ever since i started making music. sure, serum is fantastic but something about massive makes me always want to explore without getting too carried away. i also love that its not too cpu intensive. it'll be a shame in another 10 years time when vsts like massive won't be compatable
Great sound for a software synth, especially in the bass and medium frequencies. Push it too high though and very audible aliasing starts ruining the sound. Very, very versatile plugin.

P. S.: Since my GS2 neither has NENA's "Ganz Oben" breathy bell-patch nor the one from Cosa Rosa's "Traumstation", I assume Reinhold having kept the very best sounds solely to himself.🥳😂🤣
Thank you!!! Great input!!!
Would love to see more outdated software like Synth1 and TAL Noisemaker in the future.
Novation V-station, zeta, Vanguard
This VST is personally responsible for the decline of Drum and Bass in the USA. Thanks Skrillex and the Bro-Steppers, I'll never forgive you.
I think Serum would like to have a word here too;)
@@AudioPilz 💯💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
i mean drum and bass is coming back in a major way, coexisting with the current state of modern dubstep
Massive X? For sure. OG Massive? Not a chance. GOAT synth. The literal Minimoog of Wavetables.
Nice analogy!!!
My man's playing a dangerous game here lmao. Crazy that this synth is still on hits being made today. Back when NI was all quality all the time!
Simpler times!!!
finally, florian made dubstep jam
6:37
I already did 2 or 3 - not my favorite genre tho...
It drives me crazy that no one ever noticed Super 8, that is a super good sounding synth with a wonderful clean interface. If only there was a hardware version of that.
I really have to give that one a try!
Nice ones!!! Maybe give Vital a go!!!
If it's an electric acoustic, you can put it through an auto-wah FX box. If not, you can buy a contact pick-up, adheres to the body.
Thank you!!! Great suggestion!!!
Seconding this! Was going to say I was wondering when a piece of NI hardware would get the Bad Gear treatment, and from what the internet tells me, the Maschine+ is begging for it. 😅
Excellent video all around involving one of the best VA plugins.
Thank you so much!!!
Great episode as usual, bought Massive last year for the sale price of £40 and FM8 at the same time for £8 two great synths for bargain prices, their normal price is £129.
NI has updated both to be Mac silicone compatible so they should be supported for some time yet.
Great find!!!

Loved that dubstep tune. All the music in this episode is excellent.!
Thank you so much!!!
Wow… jam two gave me chills, goosebumps and made my nips rock hard bro. Nice. Also helps that I’ve been playing a lot of cadence of hyrule with the rival_a soundtrack… really felt like it could fit in that game.
❤️❤️❤️
it scares me knowing that AudioPilz is a cruelty squad fan...nonetheless, great video as always! 🗣
Yay new episode! Happy weekend!
❤️❤️❤️
Was the Z3ta+ any good? I like the sound of it, but with my knowledge of synthesizers I can't really say anything
I have to check that one out!!!
I agree with you. I had this for years before I knew anything about synths.
Not the worst starting point!!!
Starting out with Ghost in the Shell? Niiiiiice.
Classic!!!
The Lyra-8 vocoding sounded fantastic, so deep and harmonically rich.
...damn, maybe I SHOULD buy one, after all.
Aw, man...
Sorry for that;)
Agree, this is still one of my fave synths. While Massive X can do more, its is such a behemoth and the relative simplicity of original Massive makes it that much more usable. And like anything powered by Reaktor, it sounds huge.
👍👍👍
NOT SURE IF I'M UPSET OR PLEASED THIS CAME OUT!!! I AM CONFLICTED BUT I CANT WAIT TO WATCH THIS!!!
😀😀😀
@@AudioPilzthis one was hard to stomach but as usual... you're absolutely fair and based. Thank you!
Wait. At 3:57, are you hinting that you'll be bringing us a Bad Gear episode about the Buchla Easel?
Should I?;)
@@AudioPilz Of course! How is that even a question? LOL Actually, I can imagine the Easel would make for quite the episode, it's loved by many but it's probably one of the quirkiest synths ever brought to market...
Today's genre jam was a blazing glorious masterpiece, and not just because I'm finally listening thru some headphones with decent bass response. 😀
Thank you so much!!!
honestly, the amount of memes you are in on and just use fluently baffles me every single friday
Image search exists.
Thank you!!!
You had me at fuster cluck!
❤️❤️❤️
That phrase, isn't that technically an orgy?
I wonder how much time was spent on the old school windows animation at around 6:00? It was awesome! 👌😄
I know you have people recommending gear for the show all the time, but I just got hold of an old E-Mu MP7 “Command Station” synth and it would be so PERFECT for Bad Gear.
I second this again
I'd LOVE to get hold of one of these!!!
@AudioPilz it's your destiny to command one of these less than portable groove boxes
I remember NI Massive being the king of dubstep back before serum
Simpler times!!!
3:33 this sounds so good. This isnt just modulations on 1 patch is it???
Slightly modified preset
Big moves from King Florian! Is Pigments next???
Great suggestion, thank you!!!
Cutting up massive this is even better, this is Epic lol
Thank you!!!
I like your Flor-step jam. I was too old to casually like Dubstep when it came out and now that it has aged poorly I still casually like it. Wubs wrong with me?
Thanks!!! I really liked the pre-Brostep stuff
It's called massive because you experience a massive disappointment when opening it. 😅
Lol, shots fired;)
I really enjoyed that first jam! Excellent!
Thank you so much!!!
Nice ! Never liked Massive much but Absynth and FM8 are my go too plugins for the last 15 years. You made me want to give it another go.
Definitely worth a shot
I hear what you did with this soft synth and now I want to hear you make music with it. Like, real tracks on Spotify or wherever.
Thanks!!! Shameless plug: full tracks and extended jams can be found on Patreon
Oh man, controlling this with the Oxygen 8, instant nostalgia for a very specific time and place.
Simpler times!!!
Was not expecting the cruelty squad footage. Superb reference game.
Thank you!!!
For the computers of its day, it was great. Dialing computing back two decades and Massive was hitting it just right on sound quality, features, and GUI design.
Decades ago: Remember zip drives? Tech moved on.
...and CPU consumption;)
Sylenth and Massive were my dynamic duo around 2012
Modern Classics
1:16 Axwell & Dirty South - Open Your Heart
Nothing wrong with a little preset;)
I never really loved Massive, but I did understand its power and popularity. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't use it on a few of my released productions, too. I remember spending a good few days programming a disco stab sound in Massive.
Most massive disco stabs of all time
massive is my favourite soft synth, been using it ever since i started making music. sure, serum is fantastic but something about massive makes me always want to explore without getting too carried away. i also love that its not too cpu intensive. it'll be a shame in another 10 years time when vsts like massive won't be compatable
We need a plan b for that!!!
Yaaaayyyyy we gonna wobble today!
Wobble for days!!!
Great sound for a software synth, especially in the bass and medium frequencies. Push it too high though and very audible aliasing starts ruining the sound. Very, very versatile plugin.
Agreed!!!
