Is there any chance of you reviewing the SOMA Ether V2? It's not a really synth, but it's useful for electronic music as a source of drones, sound effects, sampler fodder, etc. I have one, along with some mixed feelings about it. I'd really like to see what you could do with one! 🙂
Just like SOMA's Enner it's a drone machine. (Unfortunately) I sold my Lyra-8 after a couple of month, but I kept the Enner. If you are into experimental music SOMA is a 1st class address. I hope Vlad never stopps making these stunning devices.
I call my Lyra 8 the "time waster". Every time I turn it on I end up spending a couple of very enjoyable hours making weird soundscapes I'll never be able to reproduce. I couple it with a Boss DR-55 drum machine running through a spring reverb, and it's lo-fi heaven.
The magnetic charm of the Lyra-8 is undeniable. I’ve pegged it as my secret weapon for hunting down those rare, elusive samples - the kind that elevate a track from good to unforgettable. But, without fail, I’m seduced into the spontaneous symphony of a jam session. The Lyra-8 isn’t merely a piece of gear; it’s a gateway to uncharted sonic territories, beckoning me to explore further than I ever planned.
Reminds me of how Mark Twain described listening to Wagner’s Ring cycle. “I think Wagner’s music is great…..it’s much better than it sounds”. (Paraphrased)
I got a soma ether and I don't think you could make music with it but i like to get stoned and find things that are playing radio stations just laying around in the world.
One of my cats was staring at the TV for at least half a minute in a WTF state of mind. They usually ignore most of the audio that I force upon them. 😂 Happy weekend!
I have own one for years now and I love it. You truly have to be recording at all times because it can start making something you have never heard of. It is VERY hard to understand and play but it is worth it. You will be looking for a sound and then look at the clock to see 2 hours went by and you were just lost messing around with it. Im glad it has no quantize or cv, midi etc. EVERYTHING has those. This doesn't and it never pretended to be. Its also built like a tank quite literally.
This is by far one of the coolest pieces of gear you have had on the channel. An absolute powerhouse for generating atmospheric sounds. Thank you for showcasing this amazing synth! :)
Saw the Lyra-8 in the thumbnail and thought "how the hell is he going to reproduce the opening track on this thing?" You absolutely smashed it out of the park mate, good effort!
As someone who uses this synth as the centerpiece for nearly every one of my tracks, "letting go" is possibly the best advice you can give to tackle this beast. Crazy amounts of long-decay modulated reverb and delay help too ;)
The Lyra-8 isn't bad gear, it's weird gear. No lie, I have used this device extensively whether it's Rhizome in DC or the High Zero festival. With Jazz musicians, or absolute weirdos doing noise music. I love the thing to death. It's super well built, and there is nothing else like it. Unless you are talking about ciat lonbarde instruments (hint hint). It was also the only synth I used alongside other more conventional instruments (Guitars, Bass, Cello) for my Under Night album. In short...it is surprisingly useful.
"Ritualistic Synth Channel" is probably the best description for Bad Gear. Yeah, every friday I close my work laptop at 17:59, to just open my Studio laptop at 18:00 and watch you eviscerate noise making stuff.
I know Soma's stuff isn't for everyone, but I love the Lyra and how it sounds and what people do with it. I picked up their Enner and the ability to just be expressive while playing is a joy unto itself. Yeah I can only use it in my more experimental compositions, but those are fun!!
@@AudioPilz what piece of gear would you recommend for a neck breaker artist? I been eying the 404 mk2 because of the work flow but I know I could always just run a daw with samples. @@robinr22 I don't believe art must be pleasant, and I think there should be tools to create all forms of art. This reminds me of the music to a TV series called Jam if recall correctly it was Warp artists Aphex Twin, Autechre and Board of Canada with very disturbing dark comedy sketches there's an audio version called Blue Jam on Warp, my German colleague thought it was the best thing he’d ever seen.
I've been working on PT2399 Ic delay chip and testing how it sounds with a function generator. This synth sounds exacly like my electronics test setup.
They had to make the lyra in orange or pink, because if it was yellow, people would start to realize that its a synthesizer straight from 'The Back Rooms'.
Okay. So, that was fantastic... And, now I'm really interested in seeing you tackle any of the new Stylophone stuff (the theremin, or the drone machine). Also, the Elta Solar 42.
The First thing, that came top my mind was "Thx to Lyra, now we can communicate with Aliens...sadly we don't know, what we are saying!" And the second was: "If IT happens, I hope it's friday and they will let you talk for us!" Once again, you Made my day ❤

Love your innovative approach to this beast. I like to use mine with the Boss Slicer SL-2 pedal, makes incredible loops.
Outro jam was was sooo fresh! Insane sample fodder machine!
Thoroughly enjoy the abstract.
I've been working on PT2399 Ic delay chip and testing how it sounds with a function generator. This synth sounds exacly like my electronics test setup.
😂😂😂
What makes this different from a few circuits on a breadboard is the control layout.
I felt creative just listening to this Sovjet horror ost generator
Thank you!!!
Great work! I've never gotten the CV input to work, so I was impressed with that 2nd jam.
Thank you!!!
Nice episode! 3rd jam is very strong (and fresh in aspect of traditions of BG)!
Thank you so much!!!
They had to make the lyra in orange or pink, because if it was yellow, people would start to realize that its a synthesizer straight from 'The Back Rooms'.
True that!
Don’t own this synth but I really like it and the drum machine they make too.
Love it - I have 2 use together as kinda stereo- nothing you do can make them sound the same as each other - ultimate fun synth
Oh shit! Just clicked play, really interested to see how this goes. Love my Lyra
Oh, I was thinking of getting one but eventually decides I have enough synths already 😅 Nice demo btw!
Okay. So, that was fantastic... And, now I'm really interested in seeing you tackle any of the new Stylophone stuff (the theremin, or the drone machine). Also, the Elta Solar 42.
last jam was so awesome. Next you gotta do The Pipe 😁
😀😀😀
The First thing, that came top my mind was "Thx to Lyra, now we can communicate with Aliens...sadly we don't know, what we are saying!" And the second was: "If IT happens, I hope it's friday and they will let you talk for us!"
Once again, you Made my day ❤
Thank you so much!!!
that is some of the best dark minimal I have ever heard. Pure genius!
Thank you so much!!!
That last jam really tempts to get the extended version. Good stuff. Way to loop back to old rhythmic-noise days.⛓️⚒️🚬🪬🔩
thank you Professor.. I felt a little warmth in my heart everytime I see a synth on Bad Gear I did adequate research on then passed on..
🤘😁
Thanks!!! Congratulations!!!
@@AudioPilz ..I might be in serious trouble if you start doing eurorack reviews...
This is similar to one of the synths Bruce Haack built in the early 60s. I dig it.
👍👍👍
Wieder einmal klasse und kurzweilig und mega interessant, da ich auch mit dem Lyra8 liebäugel...
Vielen Dank!!! Definitiv einen Versuch wert
The only bad thing about this box is I cannot ( convince myself to) afford it.
Very much enjoy being a witness to the ritual.
❤️❤️❤️
Austrian Death Machine reference alone, is worth the price of admission!
;)
