You can really see how passionate he is about baseball in this video. He really got into the strategic aspect of the game and seemed like he could go on about it for hours.
Great video. That's how you have to approach being in the dugout. JD Martinez has a notebook in the dugout with him. He writes down in a spiral note pad about pitchers and the at bats he has with them. That always impressed me about him while he played in Detroit. As of 5-10-18 he is leading the AL with a .351 ba.
You should do a video on how much an error really impacts you in the MLB and or what your coach tells you when you make an error and what advice they give you
Another great video! I've never played baseball a day in my life, but I really liked this video. I think most of what you said can be applied across all sports, and how good players are not just physically but also mentally prepared when they step on the field.
I love the videos. Very descriptive and full. I feel like I know because of the detailed story telling. Makes treadmill work and long boring car rides go by quickly
Have you ever thought about broadcasting? You have a great knowledge of the game, inside perspective and good voice. Is there a specific MLB team you would enjoy broadcasting for?
In 2018, the Mets were playing the Phillies in Philadelphia. Wilmer Flores gets a base hit off Hector Neris and gets replaced by a pinch runner. Flores tells Devin Mesoraco in the on-deck circle and probably told him info about Hector Neris. Mesoraco took Neris deep.
I would love to hear about your experiences with different umpires throughout the leagues. More interested about the MLB experiences. Which umps you liked and which ones weren't so much a fan of and how reputation would influence calls, if at all. All in your opinion and experiences.
When I play first, me and the runner always talk, usually complaining about the heat or the umpires. But it can range from good hit, to your coach is a jackass, really depends on the situation
Had a lecture about this very thing to a kid that I was supervising on my team as an E-Tech in the oilfield. Yeah, there's a LOT of time where you can sit around doing nothing. But this guy was a fresh-faced kid. Knew nothing about the industry, but was knowledgeable about computer hardware, software, and electronics in general. But he knew nothing about the oilfield. I tried taking him through a run down of everything that's going on on an active frac pad. He would keep saying this like: "Oh, that's just water transfer, I'm here as an E-Tech for this company. Not for that company doing water." (A frac pad will have a dozen or more different "vendors." One company does the water. Another does the sand. Another does the acid. And the main company is the one running the actual frac.) He said the same thing about the sand guys. "Oh, but those guys handle the sand, not us." I had this same exact lecture Matt is giving here. You still should know how the pad is set up, who is doing what, and so forth, that way you will be prepared in case something happens. You'll have a better understanding of your role in the thing.
its funny when you talk about preparation & getting to know the opposing pitcher, this is exactly what kobe bryant did all the time in the film room in the nba. this whole preparation thing translates everywhere no matter what you do.
can u do a video on if u played multiple sports in highschool and how u feel about specializing in one sport or playing other sports besides baseball. in addition how to practice baseball in the offseason if these other sports take up ur fall and/or winter
Have you ever been a part (your team or the other team) of a triple play? One of my favorite plays in baseball is the triple play. I remember my 5th grade little league team made one (6-3 when i have playing first)
Bradley Hills Lmao believe it or not we got one of those this year the shortstop dove tagged the runner going 3 and threw to first.. it was pretty amazing😂
mine would've been like 6 or 7 years ago i think. other team did a hit and run with men on 1st and 2nd. popped a line drive to short who stepped on 2nd and flipped to me.
Luke Roberts also depends on his contract, if he has a contract w guaranteed money, they have to pay him the money. If it's a normal contract, he can get traded, or released and that team doesn't have to pay him money
Isaac Jimenez not necessarily, if you get a 3 year deal w/o guaranteed money, if you get released before that second year happens you don't get the money
Isaac Jimenez arbitration contracts, they don't have to give you the money they gave you in the contract, if they release you before a certain date they don't have to pay you the money. Same with split contracts and minor league contracts
Do you think jumping to the majors directly from Double-A affected your career? If you had gone to Triple-A do you feel your career would have lasted longer?
I have a question! I’m my teams starting 2nd baseman I can get my glove on all grounder’s but some roll up my arm and others pop out of my glove... I still make the plays but sometimes easy double plays aren’t double plays.. any idea on what I’m doing wrong?
indeed. this guy matt does not suck at baseball at all, in fact it was his hand injury that did his career in. basically, dont feel bad about suckin in the mlb. injuries robbed u of a baseball career matt.
Haha. These videos are so awesome and help my game so much. Since I watched your video on engaging your hips/back leg when hitting, I've went 9-10 with 3 homers, a few doubles and singles and a walk. Every video answers questions I've always wondered and listening to your stories is so inspirational. Thank you for being you! Keep it up man!

VERY WELL SAID
Finally, a change of scenery
nailed that impression of Brian.

you gotta shake errors off. move on, forget it. if it impacts you, you will probably fold
i wish i had coaches that conveyed this information when i played. for guys coming up this channel is gold.
Another great video! I've never played baseball a day in my life, but I really liked this video. I think most of what you said can be applied across all sports, and how good players are not just physically but also mentally prepared when they step on the field.
This dude is probably the only guy on youtube that can get his views close to his subs
Excellent video!
You're really helping me to appreciate the strategy of an at-bat
Awesome! Thanks for watching our stuff and commenting!
This is a really good video
kelon jones agreed
I will think about what he said I have a game tomorrow, I always go up to bat without a plan
I love the videos. Very descriptive and full. I feel like I know because of the detailed story telling. Makes treadmill work and long boring car rides go by quickly
Probably one of the best channels I have come by in a while. Keep it up!
What's talk on the field like?
Have you ever thought about broadcasting? You have a great knowledge of the game, inside perspective and good voice. Is there a specific MLB team you would enjoy broadcasting for?
From your experience do pitchers usually start fastball? is that the dominant first pitch?
As a coach i know what you're doing and it's a very good idea. As a player, that's equally just as good of an idea doing as you said. Very smart play.
Have you been pranked when you played for the Padres? Or have you pranked someone?
This video was very informative yet hilarious! Great job Matt!

What is your opinion on club baseball vs high school baseball during the recruitment process
Wow, this was eye opening! Nice Vid!

Big Padres fan here Matt, love the vids !!!!
The one dislike on the video is from Brian
Great video! I will definitely use all of these tips! Thanks!
Thanks! Thanks for watching!!!

I always see the first basemen and the base runner talking at first base, what are they saying?
Eamon Sheppard non baseball stuff
When I play first, me and the runner always talk, usually complaining about the heat or the umpires. But it can range from good hit, to your coach is a jackass, really depends on the situation

Great video as always:)

Future MLB Coach
I watch your videos and it makes miss playing.
its funny when you talk about preparation & getting to know the opposing pitcher, this is exactly what kobe bryant did all the time in the film room in the nba. this whole preparation thing translates everywhere no matter what you do.
For sure!!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!!

Well said brother 🤙🏼

What are some ways pitchers tip pitches? Love your channel btw!
I have an old video on it if you check our old videos. Thanks for watching and commenting!
who was your best friend on the padres?
Awesome vid
Excellent!!!😁
thanks matt
Fcuking Brian get it together man lmao that was hilarious
Curious about "Major League Service Time" and how much service time is needed to earn benefits and a MLB pension?
Do you have any tips for slow pitch softball??
Great!
You should do a video about walk up music and just music in the clubhouse and if you had music how you selected it
Do you actually read the seams when you are up to bat or is that not true if you do could you make a video how because it's pretty hard for me
Yes you see spin. You don't actually see seams, but you see the different type of spin on the ball
Antonelli Baseball Thank you
3 years later I finally was able to see the spin of the ball in my last practice, thank you so much!
Hey matt how are u
What is game day and pre game like?
Do you still get paid for the full game even if you don't play?
Luke Roberts if he is locked into a contract
Luke Roberts also depends on his contract, if he has a contract w guaranteed money, they have to pay him the money. If it's a normal contract, he can get traded, or released and that team doesn't have to pay him money
Pgh Kid all MLB contracts are guaranteed
Isaac Jimenez not necessarily, if you get a 3 year deal w/o guaranteed money, if you get released before that second year happens you don't get the money

One of the things i've always wondered: What do opposing players talk about when someone reaches first base?
Normal stuff that you would talk to a friend about that you hadn't seen in a while. Sometimes just small talk if you don't know the guy well.
How do you remember the stretches
Do you think jumping to the majors directly from Double-A affected your career? If you had gone to Triple-A do you feel your career would have lasted longer?
Cory Enayat He did go to triple A
Shows you what it really takes to succeed at the higher level.
For sure!!!
How many of the kids on your team have the power to hit home runs?
hey do you have any tips or drills to do defensive work when you have no one to practice with?
Use a wall and a racquet ball
Damn it Brian! Pay attention!
That's what I'm saying! lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Too bad you never had a chance to share and converse with our favorite Poway neighbor, Tony Gwinn.
good video, the dogout skill needs to practice from low level league, when u master it u will sit on a pro dogout
what if u are a lead off hitter what is ur approach
Did you get to play with Legends like David Ortiz, Nick Swisher, Derek Jeter, etc
BlueMonster Nick Swisher legend??? Lmaoooo I died at that one 😂😂😂
Holy crap, there’s so many D Bags out there that I’ve never not seen a 👎, I don’t wanna jinx, but this has ZERO 4 good reason too👏🤩
Thanks for these coaching tips but really, what happens in the dugout 😂
Haha! I have a video on it I believe. Thank you for watching!!
Do u still play
Do players ever withhold information to retain an advantage?
I'm sure some do! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have a question! I’m my teams starting 2nd baseman I can get my glove on all grounder’s but some roll up my arm and others pop out of my glove... I still make the plays but sometimes easy double plays aren’t double plays.. any idea on what I’m doing wrong?
Kodak Visuals Field properly
3B Set feet, Field Ball, Funnel what am I missing
Kodak Visuals If your getting bad hops charge the ball and play it on a good hop so it doesn't go up your arm
Hey how can I make a career in baseball?
I would definitely wing it 🙃
Another career cut short by injury, such a high potential. Very baseball smart. Tragic.
indeed. this guy matt does not suck at baseball at all, in fact it was his hand injury that did his career in. basically, dont feel bad about suckin in the mlb. injuries robbed u of a baseball career matt.
I went to the marlins game last night and saw bellinger get a cycle
What is it like inside the clubhouse?
He was teammates with Trevor Hoffman
what was it like when u first found you would would be in the majors
Did you practice everyday as a kid and were on travel ball
I did travel ball starting 13u and I didn't practice everyday. Probably 3-4 times a week during season. Thanks for watching and commenting!
what are walk offs like.
what about sunflower seeds? bubble gum? tobacco?
Let's break this down from a fundamental standpoint
What about when your not playing in the dugout
anybody else hear him burp at 2:27 lol
I think I burped about 15 times lol
I wonder if there's a kid named Brian on his travel team that secretly bothers him lmao
Sadam
I've always wondered how much farting happens in an MLB dugout
1st view and comment
“I can’t find my batting gloves! Where are they?!”
Haha yup! Thanks for watching and commenting!
