I'm 70 years old and born and raised in the Bronx. 5 stops on the subway got me to Yankee Stadium. I first became aware of the stepping on the foul line jinx watching Yogi Berra. I think the Yankees third base coach at the time was a guy named Jim Crocetti and he never stepped on the foul line either. It's funny how as I got older and play ball for Baylor I got to meet a lot of players from all over the country. At the time none of the guys had never heard of it. Maybe it's got its start back in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium. The only other Unwritten rule during my days was not to go in with the spikes high on a slide. Of course we wore steel spikes in the day. I enjoy this channel quite a bit and it brings back a lot of memories for me. Everyone says it's a different game now but still baseball.
Antonelli was called up to the Padres on September 1, 2008, where he promptly laced a single off Greg Maddux of the Dodgers for his first hit in the major leagues. He then went hitless in his next 20 at bats, but then got 7 hits in his next 13 at-bats with 3 walks, including his first home run, on September 15, off of Colorado Rockies pitcher Jason Hirsh.

When I delayed running to first and watched my first homer in college the opposing catcher politely informed me that I’d likely be plunked during my next AB. During the next at bat before the pitch he quickly whispered “I hope he goes for your legs”. Got a nice bruise on my calf but at least they went low.

@@lidiaquinillo7657 Technically a fake tag can be considered obstruction if the act of making the fake tag impedes the runners ability to get to a base. Most often times attempting a fake tag will not result in an obstruction call but it has happened.
Definitely Not CIA Bear last year, I was running to second. And I think there was an overthrow. Anyways the guy didn’t have the ball but he went for the tag. After the play was over, the ump yelled at him, threatening to eject him if he did it again.
If the umpire takes a shot from a wild pitch or foul tip, the catcher should go to the mound for a conference to give the ump a minute to recover without making a scene. Also, if something similar happens to the catcher, the batter should step out of the box and take a couple of swings to let the catcher recover.
I learned a lot of these unwritten rules from Jim Bouton's book "Ball Four". When a fight broke out because of a bean ball Bouton ran out and danced with one of the opponents he knew pretty well. Ball Four is a must read if you like baseball. RIP Jim Bouton

I imagine the no hitter thing creates an air of tension, Mark Buerhle famously had multiple no hitters and a perfecto for the white sox, in the 8th inning of his perfect game he apparently walked up to all the players in the dug out who weren't saying anything to him and asked, "Dig you guys see that they haven't gotten a hit?" Which is pretty awesome, and I already knew he was a cool guy.
Actually, I remember a rule for covering baseball... there actually was a bit of a hubbub about it back in the day: don't show players crying. I remember after the Astros lost to the Mets in '86 the cameras showed Billy Doran crying in the dugout and there were complaints that they shouldn't have shown that. Personally, I grew up an Astros fan and that series was a particularly brutal rollercoaster ride. I know that some people think it's a sign of weakness to cry, but you play 162 games and then 6 more in the postseason and are eliminated in extra innings with Mike Scott scheduled to pitch the next game... I get it, let them have their privacy, but watching my teams players cry didn't make me think any less of them. It made me really love the team.

Good list, Matt. I have mixed feelings about it being a no-no to bunt during a no-hitter, but tend to favor the offense for two reasons: 1) Taking away the bunt, takes away a weapon for a team, on that's all the more relevant it has a speeding runner who's adept at bunting, and 2) It allows the defense to get lazy, knowing that it doesn't need to defend against the bunt, when infielders should need to show they can make that play. The only exception might be if there's a blowout, but even there, why give the defense any edge. Frankly, if I'm a pitcher throwing a no-hitter, it's actually more satisfying to know I achieved it even when the other side was trying to every way it could to break it up. Liked & subscribed.
I agree more with his take. In a close game - all means are available do whatever you have to do to win the game. But if it is 10-0 sorry but you aren’t coming back by bunting. Overall I always say it isn’t over until it’s over but you won’t score 10 runs by bunts. So then you have to try and get actual hits. Which I know you have a technicality here - bunts are actual hits. But I think you know what I mean. Overall you probably aren’t coming back 10-0 with actual swings but there have been some crazy comebacks like Indians mariners in 2001, and I don’t remember bunts being part of the equation at least until it got a lot closer. Bunts don’t typically build momentum. Bunt single down 10-0? Your own dugout will be annoyed with you and doesn’t accomplish much. A home run? Probably doesn’t get the juices going either but you never know. One thing I feel like for sure the home run is way more likely to result in some sort of momentum than a bunt single. So that’s the biggest reason I feel like you shouldn’t bunt down a lot. It’s like you are throwing in the towel but then also adding in a “f___ you” with it. To me swinging away isn’t throwing in the towel as long as you continue to use good principles- like working the count.
@@astros7242 I feel like it comes down to what inning it is in this 10-0 example. Bunting is an excellent tool in the hitter's toolbox, dependent on runners on base and infield positioning. It shouldn't be taken away from the batter. So, even at 6 or 7 innings of no-hitter, if the opportunity exists for a bunt and moving a runner up and with the next batter coming up with a high RISP success, bunt if you wish. That being said, sure- bunting in the 8th down 10-1 seems spiteful or vindictive and denying the pitcher a piece of history for no logical reason.
The exception on the "no talking with a no hitter on the line" was the Giants' Tim Lincecum. When he pitched a no-hitter against the Padres for the second time, he seemed to ba talking and lughing with everybody in the dugout for the final three innings.
There are a few pitchers that actually will talk - and listening to the broadcast of those teams the announcers will actually make a point of it. That this pitcher is an exception. It’s kind of interesting for sure. Unlike you I guess my memory isn’t as sharp because exact examples are harder for me to remember than generic stuff. I guess that’s why I sucked at baseball when I played 😂 I couldn’t remember shit and when HOF come back and talk about playing in the 70s and shit they can say the exact pitchers thrown to them on some random June 2nd game that meant very little lol. One of the first things i thought of when they came up with a limit on mound visits. I can see a catcher saying "hey man i'd go talk to the pitcher to give you some more time, but my team can't get charged a mound visit!"
as an umpire I thank those of you that do, I always tell my catchers I take care of my shields. If the catcher takes one, I clean the hell out of the plate.
Well, actually, the last one shows that it was sheer hypocrisy for MLB to deal out such harsh penalties for doing something which has been a TRADITION in baseball for over a century. Yes, they used technology to do it---as if technology hasn't crept into the game all over the place, with radar guns, television imposed strike zones, instant replay. I think it was fine to issue some kind of sanctions, but throwing people out of the game for doing something which is a part of the game? What next, throw pitchers out for abusing the rules about intentional bases on balls? Oh wait, it's the MLB that wants to do that by eliminating the pitches from the IBB... If the MLB wants to forbid the use of video by teams during games, they should just make that a rule for going forward in the future. Otherwise, those penalties were a bit like penalizing players for using steroids back in the 90s when they were not forbidden. I was against their usage, but they were not strictly forbidden. I'm also against using video to steal signs, but it wasn't forbidden.
The Astros didn’t flaunt it. They denied it. They were ratted out by a former teammate. If that dude was a teammate of mine now, I wouldn’t sat two words to him outside the lines. What the ‘Stros did was wrong (even though other teams do it) but you can’t go all Eric Mangini on them just because you left the organization.

Unless its a game 7 and its their best hitter. Headhunt all you want because after that game you wont see that team until next year. I used to throw at the batters heads all the time during summer tournaments. I'd say maybe 20% actually hit, the rest were just high inside heat. If i was intimidated by a team i'd throw shoulder just to calm me down. I knew if i was nervous then throwing at them would make them nervous.
Because the Pitcher is the one that gets to throw stuff at you. Not fair. But he is the one on the Mound with the Ball... and you are the 1 that has to stand in the Box.

Paul D'Pa I’ve had the opposite occur and it can be just as bad although, Al Foreman was the umpire, and said “what the hell did you eat for lunch”, called time and we had a laugh until the smell was gone 😃⚾️
The one thing I feel that could be made exception to the no bunts rule is if the defense still puts a shift on in those late game big run differential situations. I feel if the opponent is gonna do that, the batter should be able to bunt if he wants to or is instructed. At the very least its a chance to work on situational hitting.
"If you think it's a home run right off the bat." "Right off the bat" is a euphemism used all the time for things that have nothing to do with baseball. He used it literally.
The biggest one I remember on bunting during a no-hitter was when Ben Davis of the Padres dropped one on the D Backs in the 8th inning against Curt Schilling. Arizona was furious, but it was only 2-0, and that brought the tying run to the plate. It was fiercely debated for a while on the sports talk shows.

That "no-hitter" rule used to be an unwritten rule with the announcers as well. But lately I've heard many announcers comment on the fact that so-and-so has not allowed a hit yet, or that he's pitched a perfect 3 innings, 9 up and 9 down, etc
I was gonna say that too! Announcers should be shot dead for jinxing games/players! Just about every game has the box score up at some point; the viewers can figure it out!!
In the first 3 innings it is no big deal usually that rule kicks in after the 5th inning. As for saying someone hasn't allowed a hit yet they are staying away from the word NO-HITTER but they still need to say something in case someone is just turning the game on. They;ll usually say something like And New York is hitless through 7 or still looking for their first runner in a perfect game or hit in a nono

Ted Nugent-Hopkis really? So when the plunking gets to the point of fights and brawls and injuries result, how is that protecting anyone? Seems to me not retaliating and just letting things go like grown men provides the best means of keeping players safe. This way nothing can escalate. We all know how little boys playing “professional sports” tend to escalate situations unnecessarily.

When I was coaching it just amazed me how many catchers didn't know how to give signs. Coaching on the bases there were numerous times I could see what the catcher was calling without even trying, it was just right out there. Our signal was if I said something like "come on now, quick hands quick hands.." that meant fastball or if it was something like "alright drive one here" or "keep that shoulder in.." meant breaking ball.
As a pitcher, the “drill him” rule is not needed. If you can strike them out and make them look silly instead of hitting them it’s definitely more effective and shows your dominance over the hitter instead of drilling them
How about a few that should be unwritten rules... I remember Billy Hatcher's bat exploded once, and the cork came flying out. He claimed it was relief pitcher Dave Smith's BP bat. So, I propose two rules- 1. Don't leave your corked batting practice bat lying where one of your star hitters might accidentally use it and get him suspended. 2. If it really was your bat, don't try to throw your teammate under the bus! A personal pet peeve of mine is when people complain about breaking an unwritten rule that actually shouldn't be a rule. Personally I don't like the 'no stealing in a blowout' rule. If you are leading, don't begrudge the other team trying to steal. You are winning. Be gracious about it and realize that sometimes comebacks happen. If you are leading 6-0 in the ninth, yeah, it's silly if they are stealing, but a team like the Cardinals back in the 80s, if they were down 6-0 in the early innings they should absolutely do what they normally did to get runs. And if the team that is up 6-0 steals? Look at it as a sign of respect. They think you might come back and they want insurance runs. When people complain about someone breaking this rule it's silly. I propose an unwritten rule that they should be ignored!
This rule is saying dont 'bother' stretching a safe place at second for being a runner at third. Theres not much advantage to it. 2nd is already scoring position. On 3rd you can tag up with 1 or none out or score on a passed ball but otherwise..theres not that much advantage.
When you’re plunking a hitter, never aim for the head. When I was in college, I meant to drill a batter in the back. I ended up hitting him in the head. I threw hard, but didn’t have the best control. I ran to the hitter and showed concern, which I feel kept the benches from emptying and kept me in the game. However, my coach was pissed and yanked me. Then suspended me for 5 games, which sucked because I also played the field. Anyway, that’s one that comes to mind. Also, don’t stare into the opponents dugout after a homer. That’s 2. I’ll try and think of more.
You shouldn’t have tried to hit him in the first place. I’m 99% sure you didn’t have a good enough reason to do so. Did he flip his bat at you or something? If so, then grow up.

Once played a game where a guy tried to steal home ahead 11-1. He didn't make it, but just the same next inning the first guy up got hit by the first pitch. Then he got hit with a pick off throw to 1st. Then he got hit with a pick off throw to second. Then the benches cleared. Craziest thing I ever saw.
I love that. Every aspect of it except stealing home (trying to) when up 11-1. The only way that gets better is if the guy he hit (x3) was the guy trying to steal home.
My husband played ball in college. Catcher. Now he coaches 13u travel ball. One of his unwritten rules is the pitcher always walks to and from the mound. Everyone else runs onto the field but the pitcher always walks. He also has some interesting terminology. Kick your dog blue is one nobody seems to understand and I still don't understand what a hum and a chuck means. I'd love to see a video of baseball sayings and/or terminology. Interesting stuff. I've been on the television side of MLB since 2000 and while I've never actually asked a ballplayer about this, it's true for the tv crews and seems like there'd be some crossover to ballplayers. Avoid talking about how fast the game is going if it's moving briskly - quick at bats, quick outs, the pitchers are fast workers - it's the top of the 5th and the game has only been going on for an hour. Avoid this because it always seems the game will decide to suddenly bog down. Half hour half innings. Full count after full count, 16 pitches in a row getting fouled off, visits and more visits, trainer comes out to check on player who might have felt something pulling up, game pauses because an unlucky catcher has to work through some serious pain from being a backstop, multiple reviews of close plays or HRs (nowadays), and multiple pitching changes as the other team bats around. Most people recognize this as just another superstition but, coincidence or not, there's been a ton of games I've been on which were going really fast and then seemed to come to an almost literal stop after someone commented how the game was really motoring.
The funniest one I saw was playing for the Oriolanders in Md and I get drilled for show boating a HR the previous at bat. No biggie, I deserved it. Our pitcher (not gonna name the stud) wants to retaliate. First pitch, 3’ behind his back, second, 2’ over his head, all of us at this point knew what he was doing, faces in our gloves (lol). Last pitch between the numbers. The batter walked to first laughing saying “it took you 3x a hole, comes around goes around”. My next at bat right between the numbers for the 2nd time. Bench’s clear, no longer 😄! God I miss ball.

I read somewhere that Leo Durocher had several spotters with binoculars hidden in the scoreboard and stands that would relay their information to the batter by which way the eyes of a figure in the scoreboard rolled his eyes.
I’ve pitched where when I would lift my leg and my catcher would move to the spot the dugout would pretty much just yell out what was coming just yelling like outside or trying to be sneaky and saying watch outside or high but then they got warned by the catcher

It's only if it's after the sixth inning and the hitting team is winning by 6 or more... Its kinda like a don't run up the score kinda thing cuz you know a 3-0 pitch will be fastball in the zone
Most unwritten rules are for pitchers' egos. Just dumb when YOUR contract is based on YOUR stats. If the other team starts pitching like it's batting practice, send it.
I agree with you on bunting in close games when the pitcher is in a potential no hitter. It's on them, pitchers have to earn their no-hitters. No one's can or should be handing it to them.
love Baseball, played it a lot of teams when I was younger but my god... you can get drilled for anything. its like the players need to grow up and accept that its a competition and as long as they aren't cheating its game.
Mark Buehrle was famous for talking to his teammates during his perfect game and no hitter. He would walk up to guys and say to them "hey do you know I'm throwing a perfect game?" He would make a joke out of it. Everyone was afraid to answer him for fear they were going to jinx him.
How does stick em/tac/pine tar for pitchers during either really cold or muggy games sit nowadays? I know there’s been more scrutiny around it with it perhaps helping spin but I think I’d rather the guy throwing 95 keep in around the zone vs in a ear hole cuz their fingers are numb or sweaty

I know in a little late, but my freshman year we were facing our rivals, and well we hated then, and we were killing them 8-0 in the 5th, and well I was on third and my coach gave the sign for a suicide squeeze just to make the other team mad, well worth the other coaches yelling
If your Baltimore and it’s the 11th inning 2-2 wildcard game, don’t use the best closer of that year, use the guy who has a 6.00 ERA and gets rocked each time he is out.
@@Icebergslim_1 It's funny because in that game Showalter was using an unwritten rule. He was using the "don't use your closer in a tie game on the road" rule. It makes sense because unless you're winning and you put your closer in the game you don't know how long he'll be needed. The problem for Buck is that he was betting on his offense to save him, but the Orioles hadn't had a hit since like the sixth inning. In this case strict adherence to unwritten rules burned him. His reward for his inflexibility? Encarnacion pimping his walk-off homer. The baseball gods do have a sense of humor.

Swinging on a 3-0 count is up to the coaches. Some hitters they will give a green light to do that, figuring that the pitcher is probably going to try to put a strike over the plate...

Dude, I'm 53, been watching baseball (and when I was a kid, playing) all my life, and there are a couple things you mentioned that I never knew! What I think is most interesting though, is that the game hasn't changed much for all it's long history.
These unwritten rules are the reason I went from loving baseball as a child to completely hating it. I remember as a 12 year old in little league having fully grown 40 year old men swearing at me and making me cry for accidentally hopping over the pitches mound in between innings. Not to mention, I’ll bet if you asked all of the players who have been hit in retaliation for something, most of them would still tell you that they wouldn’t change that unwritten rule. The pitcher didn't throw a good pitch so it's his fault, he shouldn't be mad because you did your job better. If you have the freaking left fielder between 1st and 2nd, nobody anywhere near 3rd, then bunting down the 3rd base line is acceptable. I'm 70 years old and born and raised in the Bronx. 5 stops on the subway got me to Yankee Stadium. I first became aware of the stepping on the foul line jinx watching Yogi Berra. I think the Yankees third base coach at the time was a guy named Jim Crocetti and he never stepped on the foul line either. It's funny how as I got older and play ball for Baylor I got to meet a lot of players from all over the country. At the time none of the guys had never heard of it. Maybe it's got its start back in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium. The only other Unwritten rule during my days was not to go in with the spikes high on a slide. Of course we wore steel spikes in the day.
I enjoy this channel quite a bit and it brings back a lot of memories for me. Everyone says it's a different game now but still baseball.

When I delayed running to first and watched my first homer in college the opposing catcher politely informed me that I’d likely be plunked during my next AB. During the next at bat before the pitch he quickly whispered “I hope he goes for your legs”. Got a nice bruise on my calf but at least they went low.

Definitely Not CIA Bear last year, I was running to second. And I think there was an overthrow. Anyways the guy didn’t have the ball but he went for the tag. After the play was over, the ump yelled at him, threatening to eject him if he did it again.

If the umpire takes a shot from a wild pitch or foul tip, the catcher should go to the mound for a conference to give the ump a minute to recover without making a scene. Also, if something similar happens to the catcher, the batter should step out of the box and take a couple of swings to let the catcher recover.
That would go under the heading of good sportsmanship.

I learned a lot of these unwritten rules from Jim Bouton's book "Ball Four". When a fight broke out because of a bean ball Bouton ran out and danced with one of the opponents he knew pretty well. Ball Four is a must read if you like baseball. RIP Jim Bouton

Actually, I remember a rule for covering baseball... there actually was a bit of a hubbub about it back in the day: don't show players crying. I remember after the Astros lost to the Mets in '86 the cameras showed Billy Doran crying in the dugout and there were complaints that they shouldn't have shown that. Personally, I grew up an Astros fan and that series was a particularly brutal rollercoaster ride. I know that some people think it's a sign of weakness to cry, but you play 162 games and then 6 more in the postseason and are eliminated in extra innings with Mike Scott scheduled to pitch the next game... I get it, let them have their privacy, but watching my teams players cry didn't make me think any less of them. It made me really love the team.

Good list, Matt. I have mixed feelings about it being a no-no to bunt during a no-hitter, but tend to favor the offense for two reasons: 1) Taking away the bunt, takes away a weapon for a team, on that's all the more relevant it has a speeding runner who's adept at bunting, and 2) It allows the defense to get lazy, knowing that it doesn't need to defend against the bunt, when infielders should need to show they can make that play.
The only exception might be if there's a blowout, but even there, why give the defense any edge. Frankly, if I'm a pitcher throwing a no-hitter, it's actually more satisfying to know I achieved it even when the other side was trying to every way it could to break it up. Liked & subscribed.

But if it is 10-0 sorry but you aren’t coming back by bunting. Overall I always say it isn’t over until it’s over but you won’t score 10 runs by bunts. So then you have to try and get actual hits. Which I know you have a technicality here - bunts are actual hits. But I think you know what I mean. Overall you probably aren’t coming back 10-0 with actual swings but there have been some crazy comebacks like Indians mariners in 2001, and I don’t remember bunts being part of the equation at least until it got a lot closer. Bunts don’t typically build momentum. Bunt single down 10-0? Your own dugout will be annoyed with you and doesn’t accomplish much. A home run? Probably doesn’t get the juices going either but you never know. One thing I feel like for sure the home run is way more likely to result in some sort of momentum than a bunt single. So that’s the biggest reason I feel like you shouldn’t bunt down a lot. It’s like you are throwing in the towel but then also adding in a “f___ you” with it. To me swinging away isn’t throwing in the towel as long as you continue to use good principles- like working the count.
@@astros7242 I feel like it comes down to what inning it is in this 10-0 example. Bunting is an excellent tool in the hitter's toolbox, dependent on runners on base and infield positioning. It shouldn't be taken away from the batter. So, even at 6 or 7 innings of no-hitter, if the opportunity exists for a bunt and moving a runner up and with the next batter coming up with a high RISP success, bunt if you wish.
That being said, sure- bunting in the 8th down 10-1 seems spiteful or vindictive and denying the pitcher a piece of history for no logical reason.
These nuances are part of why I love baseball.

The exception on the "no talking with a no hitter on the line" was the Giants' Tim Lincecum. When he pitched a no-hitter against the Padres for the second time, he seemed to ba talking and lughing with everybody in the dugout for the final three innings.
There are a few pitchers that actually will talk - and listening to the broadcast of those teams the announcers will actually make a point of it. That this pitcher is an exception. It’s kind of interesting for sure.

One of the first things i thought of when they came up with a limit on mound visits. I can see a catcher saying "hey man i'd go talk to the pitcher to give you some more time, but my team can't get charged a mound visit!"

Well, actually, the last one shows that it was sheer hypocrisy for MLB to deal out such harsh penalties for doing something which has been a TRADITION in baseball for over a century. Yes, they used technology to do it---as if technology hasn't crept into the game all over the place, with radar guns, television imposed strike zones, instant replay. I think it was fine to issue some kind of sanctions, but throwing people out of the game for doing something which is a part of the game? What next, throw pitchers out for abusing the rules about intentional bases on balls? Oh wait, it's the MLB that wants to do that by eliminating the pitches from the IBB... If the MLB wants to forbid the use of video by teams during games, they should just make that a rule for going forward in the future. Otherwise, those penalties were a bit like penalizing players for using steroids back in the 90s when they were not forbidden. I was against their usage, but they were not strictly forbidden. I'm also against using video to steal signs, but it wasn't forbidden.
The Astros didn’t flaunt it. They denied it. They were ratted out by a former teammate. If that dude was a teammate of mine now, I wouldn’t sat two words to him outside the lines. What the ‘Stros did was wrong (even though other teams do it) but you can’t go all Eric Mangini on them just because you left the organization.

I used to throw at the batters heads all the time during summer tournaments. I'd say maybe 20% actually hit, the rest were just high inside heat. If i was intimidated by a team i'd throw shoulder just to calm me down. I knew if i was nervous then throwing at them would make them nervous.

The one thing I feel that could be made exception to the no bunts rule is if the defense still puts a shift on in those late game big run differential situations. I feel if the opponent is gonna do that, the batter should be able to bunt if he wants to or is instructed. At the very least its a chance to work on situational hitting.

The biggest one I remember on bunting during a no-hitter was when Ben Davis of the Padres dropped one on the D Backs in the 8th inning against Curt Schilling. Arizona was furious, but it was only 2-0, and that brought the tying run to the plate. It was fiercely debated for a while on the sports talk shows.
Frankly, it's dumb. Both teams should be doing everything in their power to win.
2-0 is a competitive game, and bunts are absolutely in play, no matter how many hits you have. No brainer.

That "no-hitter" rule used to be an unwritten rule with the announcers as well. But lately I've heard many announcers comment on the fact that so-and-so has not allowed a hit yet, or that he's pitched a perfect 3 innings, 9 up and 9 down, etc

In the first 3 innings it is no big deal usually that rule kicks in after the 5th inning. As for saying someone hasn't allowed a hit yet they are staying away from the word NO-HITTER but they still need to say something in case someone is just turning the game on. They;ll usually say something like And New York is hitless through 7 or still looking for their first runner in a perfect game or hit in a nono

When I was coaching it just amazed me how many catchers didn't know how to give signs. Coaching on the bases there were numerous times I could see what the catcher was calling without even trying, it was just right out there. Our signal was if I said something like "come on now, quick hands quick hands.." that meant fastball or if it was something like "alright drive one here" or "keep that shoulder in.." meant breaking ball.
As a pitcher, the “drill him” rule is not needed. If you can strike them out and make them look silly instead of hitting them it’s definitely more effective and shows your dominance over the hitter instead of drilling them
How about a few that should be unwritten rules... I remember Billy Hatcher's bat exploded once, and the cork came flying out. He claimed it was relief pitcher Dave Smith's BP bat. So, I propose two rules- 1. Don't leave your corked batting practice bat lying where one of your star hitters might accidentally use it and get him suspended. 2. If it really was your bat, don't try to throw your teammate under the bus!
A personal pet peeve of mine is when people complain about breaking an unwritten rule that actually shouldn't be a rule. Personally I don't like the 'no stealing in a blowout' rule. If you are leading, don't begrudge the other team trying to steal. You are winning. Be gracious about it and realize that sometimes comebacks happen. If you are leading 6-0 in the ninth, yeah, it's silly if they are stealing, but a team like the Cardinals back in the 80s, if they were down 6-0 in the early innings they should absolutely do what they normally did to get runs. And if the team that is up 6-0 steals? Look at it as a sign of respect. They think you might come back and they want insurance runs. When people complain about someone breaking this rule it's silly. I propose an unwritten rule that they should be ignored!

This rule is saying dont 'bother' stretching a safe place at second for being a runner at third. Theres not much advantage to it. 2nd is already scoring position. On 3rd you can tag up with 1 or none out or score on a passed ball but otherwise..theres not that much advantage.
When you’re plunking a hitter, never aim for the head. When I was in college, I meant to drill a batter in the back. I ended up hitting him in the head. I threw hard, but didn’t have the best control. I ran to the hitter and showed concern, which I feel kept the benches from emptying and kept me in the game.
However, my coach was pissed and yanked me. Then suspended me for 5 games, which sucked because I also played the field. Anyway, that’s one that comes to mind.
Also, don’t stare into the opponents dugout after a homer.

Once played a game where a guy tried to steal home ahead 11-1. He didn't make it, but just the same next inning the first guy up got hit by the first pitch. Then he got hit with a pick off throw to 1st. Then he got hit with a pick off throw to second. Then the benches cleared. Craziest thing I ever saw.
I love that. Every aspect of it except stealing home (trying to) when up 11-1. The only way that gets better is if the guy he hit (x3) was the guy trying to steal home.

My husband played ball in college. Catcher. Now he coaches 13u travel ball. One of his unwritten rules is the pitcher always walks to and from the mound. Everyone else runs onto the field but the pitcher always walks. He also has some interesting terminology. Kick your dog blue is one nobody seems to understand and I still don't understand what a hum and a chuck means. I'd love to see a video of baseball sayings and/or terminology. Thanks for making these awesome videos.
Interesting stuff. I've been on the television side of MLB since 2000 and while I've never actually asked a ballplayer about this, it's true for the tv crews and seems like there'd be some crossover to ballplayers.
Avoid talking about how fast the game is going if it's moving briskly - quick at bats, quick outs, the pitchers are fast workers - it's the top of the 5th and the game has only been going on for an hour.
Avoid this because it always seems the game will decide to suddenly bog down. Half hour half innings. Full count after full count, 16 pitches in a row getting fouled off, visits and more visits, trainer comes out to check on player who might have felt something pulling up, game pauses because an unlucky catcher has to work through some serious pain from being a backstop, multiple reviews of close plays or HRs (nowadays), and multiple pitching changes as the other team bats around.
Most people recognize this as just another superstition but, coincidence or not, there's been a ton of games I've been on which were going really fast and then seemed to come to an almost literal stop after someone commented how the game was really motoring.

The funniest one I saw was playing for the Oriolanders in Md and I get drilled for show boating a HR the previous at bat. No biggie, I deserved it. Our pitcher (not gonna name the stud) wants to retaliate. First pitch, 3’ behind his back, second, 2’ over his head, all of us at this point knew what he was doing, faces in our gloves (lol). Last pitch between the numbers. The batter walked to first laughing saying “it took you 3x a hole, comes around goes around”. My next at bat right between the numbers for the 2nd time. Bench’s clear, no longer 😄! God I miss ball.

I read somewhere that Leo Durocher had several spotters
with binoculars hidden in the scoreboard and stands that
would relay their information to the batter by which way
the eyes of a figure in the scoreboard rolled his eyes.
I’ve pitched where when I would lift my leg and my catcher would move to the spot the dugout would pretty much just yell out what was coming just yelling like outside or trying to be sneaky and saying watch outside or high but then they got warned by the catcher

Watched this in light of everyone making a big stink of that dude swinging at 3-0 bases loaded situation and grand slammed it... dude apologized after?!?!!? Like Iv been casually watching baseball for years but damn had no idea so many in the MLB were so soft? Like apparently it’s an “unwritten rule” to take a pitch on a 3-0 situation???? Glad I didn’t see that rule in this video.. maybe if it was a pitcher making the video it woulda been in there but damn even the other team idc if they swing at a 3-0. Pitchers shouldn’t get in that situation, and if they do, they most likely earned that situation. Pitch out of it. Damn!
It's only if it's after the sixth inning and the hitting team is winning by 6 or more... Its kinda like a don't run up the score kinda thing cuz you know a 3-0 pitch will be fastball in the zone

Most unwritten rules are for pitchers' egos. Just dumb when YOUR contract is based on YOUR stats. If the other team starts pitching like it's batting practice, send it.
When your pitcher just hit before you and made the 2nd out, take the first pitch to let him catch his breath!

I agree with you on bunting in close games when the pitcher is in a potential no hitter. It's on them, pitchers have to earn their no-hitters. No one's can or should be handing it to them.
always figured if it brings the tying run to the plate, or you are the tying run, you can. Otherwise, hit.

love Baseball, played it a lot of teams when I was younger but my god... you can get drilled for anything. its like the players need to grow up and accept that its a competition and as long as they aren't cheating its game.

During blowout games, hitters should not "work the count." Rather, they are supposed to swing at any pitch near the strike zone.

Mark Buehrle was famous for talking to his teammates during his perfect game and no hitter. He would walk up to guys and say to them "hey do you know I'm throwing a perfect game?" He would make a joke out of it. Everyone was afraid to answer him for fear they were going to jinx him.

How does stick em/tac/pine tar for pitchers during either really cold or muggy games sit nowadays? I know there’s been more scrutiny around it with it perhaps helping spin but I think I’d rather the guy throwing 95 keep in around the zone vs in a ear hole cuz their fingers are numb or sweaty

@@Icebergslim_1 It's funny because in that game Showalter was using an unwritten rule. He was using the "don't use your closer in a tie game on the road" rule. It makes sense because unless you're winning and you put your closer in the game you don't know how long he'll be needed. The problem for Buck is that he was betting on his offense to save him, but the Orioles hadn't had a hit since like the sixth inning. In this case strict adherence to unwritten rules burned him. His reward for his inflexibility? Encarnacion pimping his walk-off homer. The baseball gods do have a sense of humor.
I've bunted to break up a no-hitter lol. We were actually getting killed and ended up coming back to win. It sparked a huge comeback. Sorry, not sorry.

Swinging on a 3-0 count is up to the coaches. Some hitters they will give a green light to do that, figuring that the pitcher is probably going to try to put a strike over the plate...

Dude, I'm 53, been watching baseball (and when I was a kid, playing) all my life, and there are a couple things you mentioned that I never knew! What I think is most interesting though, is that the game hasn't changed much for all it's long history.

There's multiple documented cases of this in the book "The Baseball Codes" I really enjoyed it.
These unwritten rules are the reason I went from loving baseball as a child to completely hating it. I remember as a 12 year old in little league having fully grown 40 year old men swearing at me and making me cry for accidentally hopping over the pitches mound in between innings. Lmao I would kick their old asses if I ever ran in to them today

Damon Bradshaw The hitters aren’t unprotected; they have a helmet and many wear elbow/shin guards. Not to mention, I’ll bet if you asked all of the players who have been hit in retaliation for something, most of them would still tell you that they wouldn’t change that unwritten rule. Just an aspect of the game - kind of like fighting in hockey.
Ryan Johnson it's what makes the game boring. I mean, if you hit a home run you should be able to celebrate. The pitcher didn't throw a good pitch so it's his fault, he shouldn't be mad because you did your job better. In the NBA after 3 pointers they throw up the 3 and talk shit all day to each other, but nobody is that sensitive. That's why baseball is where it is now, a boring uninteresting game. I'd rather watch bowling tbh

Re: #2, Don't bunt when you're down by a ton. That's true, but by the same token, don't put the shift on if you are up by a ton. If you have the freaking left fielder between 1st and 2nd, nobody anywhere near 3rd, then bunting down the 3rd base line is acceptable. It is kinda the hitters way of getting back at the fielders playing all out and expecting the him to just take it.
