UPDATE: After the initial render of this video, IGN France who originally reported that Labo designs would be free to download has since clarified that Nintendo will NOT be providing this service. Bums.
As somebody who works at a hobby shop this will sell big. This is exactly the type of stuff dads buy to create with their kids. I sell kits that are $25-$125 (though they are metal they are still fragile and much smaller) like this all the time. No joke. But now there's a game you can play with them instead of just them lying around collecting dust. I don't know about your kids but I taught my daughter not to just destroy stuff and to respect that it cost money.
I wish my younger cousin would respect my stuff when he comes over. I just have to lock everything up whenever he comes now. -_- If he got near my Nintendo Labo, it would probably get destroyed X_X.
I think it's cool. My kids thought it was amazing. My son was immediately like "let's go buy that right now". My husband was blown away by the idea of it. Try to think of this from the perspective of a kid who loves to build things. Everyone is always talking about getting kids into STEM....well here's one way to do that.
Djkelly07 Playz You do realize I purposefully made this username for myself as self-deprecation right? That's the joke. You can't just agree with my joke and think that's somehow a good roast. You're like that kid in the back of the classroom and says "you got that right" when someone makes a fat joke about themself, smugly patting yourself on the back in an attempt to substitute the love your parents never bothered to give you
So... The bug... Is it moved by the Joy-Cons' HD Rumble? That's... INSANE. I always loved the HD Rumble, thinking that it was great for the games that used it, but now they're building robots with it! One of my favorite features just got better! It's just mind-blowing how Nintendo made features like HD Rumble, gyro controls, and the IR camera to go with video games and have applied them to be so much more.
Pasta Rhythm same. They keep finding new ways to use the HD rumble outside of just feeling stuff. And I was impressed with the way Octopath Traveler has you temporarily feel coins jingling in your hands when you sell stuff at the shop. HD Rumble has a way of making it legitimately feel like the joycon magically change mass in your hands. Now I see how it could be used to move around with.
They should have called it Switchcraft. (Edit: like papercraft - and a play on the word witchcraft. Not sure why people failed to make this connection and, instead, thought I was on about Minecraft).
Yeah, but then you'll have religious groups wanting to burn all things cardboard blindly. ...or worse, try to make see if it's really a Switch by seeing if it floats in the water.
The part I love most about this is the educational opportunities this creates for gamer nerd parents and their kids. Your kids can now create these crafts out of card board, color and sticker them up all they want and bring them to life with the Switch. The parent can then teach the kids how this works and get their imagination and wonder flowing at amazing rates. If you think of it more as a kid's craft and educational opportunity, it's well worth the price.
I don't mind actually that it uses cardboard, it's eco friendly and surprisingly durable (if it's good quality anyway, I've seen furniture made entirely out of cardboard). It just bothers me that it's still so expensive, since cardboard isn't even that hard to produce.
In the words of Alex: “T H I S I S N T S M A S H ? !” On topic: the software can be bought alone, and designs are free if you want to make it all on your own.
70 is fair/cheap. Also once you have the unit and software I can see the modders going nuts on this. This is the coolest as it’s a build yourself..I have kids...and they can play. I was blown away and I love the direction.
Sergio Perez You obviously know nothing about crafting, it's okay it's not for everybody. Cardboard does cost money since it is an actual tree you have to cut down.
Jillian Donnert yep it does cost money 0.50 cents per 100 pounds, labo is complete rip off you guys can argue that is craftey and it would be fun.Well if it is craftey why don’t you just make the carborad yourself instead of buying it now thats craftey
Nintendo, PLEASE MAKE A LABO-NES ZAPPER!! AND BRING BACK DUCK HUNT with virtual console! We have already seen the point sensor working in World of Goo, make it happen with duck hunt! They could make a cardboard gun to shoot, and insert the joycon for motion around the screen and maybe with a rubber band inside the trigger to provide tension.
I'm the butthurt fanboy that wanted Nintendo to announce a half-assed port of Smash Bros. How dare Nintendo take their time on the next installment. How dare they come up with something innovative in the meantime!
Yeah, a cardboard box that has you put your eye up to it... the switch is inside showing you the image, one joycon tracks motion on the camera, the other is the interface (or something like that). Or you could just hold the switch normally and do the same thing...
"We know its a break pedal" You are thinking too narrow my friend. These are NEW CONTROLLERS. U can use that pedal for any pedal related game play. Imagine using that rod to fish in Breath of the Wild! the possibilities are endless. Imagine using the robot kit in Arms!!!
Price point really doesn't seem bad at all to me, especially by Nintendo Standards. When you consider things like 1,2, Switch launching at full price and from what little gameplay you see here there's clearly a lot more interaction, thats basically buying a game for $50 and a cardboard construction kit for 20 (plus whatever decals, reflective tape stuff, etc). There's always the possibility that the game will be light on content, but as it stands it seems pretty reasonable for the contents. On a side note, I bet people are gonna end up making some of their own blueprints off of these too. Wouldn't be surprised if people made they're own kits out of plastic or wood or tweaked designs around. Maybe some 3d printed stuff even.
Seriously so excited for this! As a teacher, this will be perfect to align to our science, technology, engineering, arts and math curriculums! I’m sharing this with all of our parents and staff!
The name of the technology is "Primesense" It's a pair of IR camera and IR light source. It's the exact same technology used on the Microsoft Kinect but here it's really tiny and has a much more simple projector which has a much shorter range but it's perfect for these kinds of things... The Kinect's range was much greater, being able to cover an entire room but it is also much larger and much more expensive and because it was large and wired you couldn't put it inside cardboard things or anything...
There is no reflective tape, it is just responding to where it is in the field of vision since it is programmed that way for that game or software, responding to movement, responding to shapes, responding to patterns, and responding to the distance of the objects. This is no where close to scratching even the surface of what these little joycon can do, I that makes me excited for the future! Also this is what is going to sell the Switch big time!
This could be adapted to basically make a custom controller. This could be used in future games. It looks like they got creative with some of the features of a game system. The custom controller capability is nice. If implemented correctly it could allow for DIY controllers for future games. Of course it would have to be compatible with normal controllers. Maybe future games could include this as a feature. Really bouncing ideas.
What would be amazing would be some kind of interface where you can map toy-con inputs onto controller inputs, so you could invent your own custom controls for normal games... :-0
It's like when we were kids and would make a cardboard car or space ship and play pretend, except now there's a digital aspect to it too. My 9 year old is interested and as a mom I want her to have more hobbies building things. The price though, ouch. They ought to sell the projects individually with downloadable software as alternate to the bundle. Looks neat if a bit weird. Lots of potential too.
The amount of people complaining about this being overpriced cardboard makes me remember that there are a lot of really stupid people out there lacking any kind of critical or empathetic thought. Who in their right mind would think the cost was only for cardboard? Just to put this into perspective, I study industrial design and just over a year ago designed a working cardboard clock that was laser cut into a sheet of cardboard and could be assembled as a project. I made five and sold them for AU$20 a pop. The variety kit has five projects for the same cost, in what I presume is a much more professional presentation. For those concerned about strength, cardboard is surprisingly resilient. Further to my point above, I also designed a desk out of a single sheet of cardboard. It took into account ergonomics (how the piece works with body measurements; for example, desk height, leg room, etc) and could hold over 50kgs.
Fabio J I totally understand your point. I think Nintendo just need to make sure the software is top notch to show consumers its a cartridge at $50, and a creation kit for the remainder. I mean, if I get 15-20 hours of entertainment out of it, I’ll consider it reasonable value. I don’t have kids but I’m going to have a great couple of afternoons crafting and messing around with my brother and niece, and that is worth it to me too. I think the gun-jumping judgment from some miserable characters is strange though. This isn’t a product for everyone, least of all pasty childless gamers in their mid teens. Reacting angrily about a product not aimed at you is impressively self-absorbed and cynical.
Sony fanboys: "Nintendo is doing something original and unique again! And I hate that!" Everyone else: "who cares? If you dont like it then dont buy it." Sony fanboys: "But I want to complain about it and whine about Nintendo!" Everyone else: "You do that anyway. Maybe go do that somewhere else, like in a burning building, or while walking off a cliff."
how nintendo came up with the idea: worker 1: hey what should we do with all this cardboard its kinda stacking up worker 2: i dont know normally i like laying with some bits and bending it to shapes when im bored worker 1: WAIT!!!! worker 2: what worker 1: what if we use the cardboard some rubber bands ant reflective tape to build a piano and on the side we can have the right joy con with the ir camera to tell what your doing worker 2: well what will we call it worker 1: we will call it Toy-Con worker 1: and the games would be Nintendo Labo: piano
My concern is having the space to store all this cardboard, some of the ToyCons look pretty big. Will you be able to deconstruct them when not in use? Some of them look so complex that once you have made them you won’t be able to flatten them out.
I'm very curious if that piano works remotely as well as they showed in the trailer. I can't imagine an IR camera being responsive enough to really replicate it well.
69.99 isn’t that much that is only 10 bucks more than the normal price of a game so really ur only paying 10 bucks for the cardboard and the standard 60 for the game. I admit that 10 bucks for cardboard sounds pricey but Nintendo has to make money some how on this
20 years from now, imma be digging through my old shit, find a broken peice of cardboard in a basement or something and just have a flash of nostalgia of me putting some cardboard together and becoming a giant wrecking robot, or learning how to play the piano through my switch. And the best part, i'd more than likely be so filled with nostalgia, just from touching a peice of cardboard, to remake my old toys from scratch. :D To bad kids don't like this stuff anymore. If you have a kid, or are a kid and want to do this with your parent or other family member, then enjoy the process together, enjoy those years.
I’m not sure yet that there’s enough game to Mobile Fighter Labo Robo Gundam, but I think my cat would like the car/HexBug and I am curious about the ShotGunCon Toy-Con.
Anyone else see the little robot and immediately knew how it worked from a certain game from 1998? "Put your controller on the floor. Put it down as flat as you can. That's good. Now, I will move your controller by the power of my will, alone."
I don’t even care that this is directed at children, this is freaking awesome! I would totally build and play with these and I’m 25, gaming is designed to be fun and Nintendo are ticking all the right boxes! P.s Please subscribe to my channel.
I never know how to feel about these things because I always feel wrong. I thought the Wii U was amazing and it failed, I thought the Switch would fail and it's doing amazing, now I see this and it looks amazing to me, so hopefully I'm not jinxing it by being excited? But I mean, I grew up with legos and all sorts of DIY kind of toys, and I grew up with Nintendo. I love both so it seems like it should be a great match to me?
This all looks amazig fun. Ill be buying this and making them all with my little nephew/niece for sure. Hours of fun , both physically and digitally, for a very reasonable cost.
"Buy a bit of cardboard for nothing"... craft quality cardboard is actually not all that cheap. It's not crazy expensive, but it's not cheap. Add that to the software costs and the price kinda makes sense. Of course it's still a reasonably large investment. One I can't afford because that money needs to be allocated for my AAA games frankly
This leaves room for a child's imagination. But can make the older audience go absolutely mad with creativity. Imagine building some hard foam robot armor, suit thing and using that while playing the robot game. Or making a foam shotgun(but made the way you like it) and using that! Also, what about getting cardboard cuts?? That shit hurts man. I'd be more worried about that than breaking it.
it's funny that: when you buy a normal bit of software, it's worth is the quality of the software. But when the software comes with cardboard, it's only worth as much as the cardboard.
I don’t even care that this is directed at children, this is freaking awesome! I would totally build and play with these and I’m 25, gaming is designed to be fun and Nintendo are ticking all the right boxes! Ps. Please subscribe to my channel
I'm am a little confused about one thing; so they are putting the same game in both the variety and robot sets? Are they allowing you to buy the cardboard separately so you don't get the same game if you choose to buy both? I don't know how much more the robot set, for example, would cost without the game. Am I the only one seeing this?
Because it's cardboard, I'd be willing to spend 20-30 CAD on it. If it was something more durable I'd be fine with 100-150 CAD. Other than that I think the creativity of it is awesome. It also challenges other companies to actually use the JoyCons to their full extent.
Actually if they straight up shipped exact specs and instructions alongside the product when you buy it (so you can re-create/fix it super easily), I'd likely be okay with the price. It just seems like a bit TOO much manual labour for its current price point.
Maybe Nintendo will make a type of Joycon with a UV camera and then there are retroreflectors around your room and then bam VR for the switch but that would be expensive. lol
I don't think that you will be able to make it at home because Nintendo might use a type of reflected cardboard or tape that will make it almost in possible to recreate at home, so you better buy it.
The idea is interesting, but now my question is, will the games suck XD? They showed a lot more of how the cardboard works rather than the games themselves. So I wonder how interesting the games that go with the cardboard will be.

I think the price is okay. My problem is, that I'm forced to buy the full pack :D I just want the piano :D
Repair it yourself? If a kid leaves it out somewhere and it gets wet, what then? And patching it with other pieces of cardboard probably won’t work as easily as Alex is suggesting. Glad people are excited, but personally, I think this is a dud.
UPDATE: After the initial render of this video, IGN France who originally reported that Labo designs would be free to download has since clarified that Nintendo will NOT be providing this service.
Bums.
Well...that sucks.
They offer repalcements that you can buy. Sold separately
Hmm getting access to the cardboard for this will be difficult, I dunno many people who have a cardboard printer lmao
Thumbs up for "Bums" & keeping us updated
Nintendo Life I
It's so nice to be called a 'lovely people' on such a regular basis. Thank you, Alex!
I also think that this trailer, which is "specifically" for children, is better and less childish than any trailer for the wii U which is for all ages

Happymonday 2015 I'm sorry. It's all about the parenting. If he's wild already it may already be too late.
I think it's cool.
My kids thought it was amazing. My son was immediately like "let's go buy that right now".
My husband was blown away by the idea of it.

Andres Enrique clearly you were

Were you?

Pretty cool name
Why, that’s the dumbest name ever. And assuming since you even mentioned a Minecraft esc reference your a kid, hints the crap name.
Yeah, but then you'll have religious groups wanting to burn all things cardboard blindly. ...or worse, try to make see if it's really a Switch by seeing if it floats in the water.

And the game is very simple and honestly would cost about $30.
Egg Benedict nobody knows what the games are like yet.
Bro your comment is hilarious as I look at your profile Pic! XD lol
It’s the game
In the words of Alex:
“T H I S I S N T S M A S H ? !”

wrong
70 is fair/cheap. Also once you have the unit and software I can see the modders going nuts on this. This is the coolest as it’s a build yourself..I have kids...and they can play. I was blown away and I love the direction.
Carpe Mkarzi imagine if etsy people get they hands on that. Imagine somebody 3d print parts for a botw master bike shell for the bike game.
Pifilix XIV yep, that is what I was thinking. And when this gets into the Wild..it will be amazing.
$70 cheap for carboard? nah lmao
Labo is genius, looks fascinating, innovative and fun. Nintendo going back to there roots. Love it
Nintendo, PLEASE MAKE A LABO-NES ZAPPER!!
ZELTINGLE I realize that, but I was just simplifying it to make it easier to understand.
referral madness Heck yeah! The possibilities are endless
If you look closer to the trailer they show a weapon with some sort of pumping action. However it's not in the two sets they release in april
Jesse Brewster well it looks like nintendo is already working on some sort of gun game. It was in the trailer
Marchel van Leeuwen Yeah I saw that, but I was hoping for a Labo version of The NES Zapper, however I wouldn’t be disappointed if this works the same.
my cats love ripping card board apart...
tonia bangtan same. If I do get this I have to get it from away from her
tonia bangtan Me Too... But He’s Outside
My cat loves playing breath of the wild.
This is gonna be like Wii Sports. Everyone will buy it, make it, and then forget about it. In turn, making Nintendo billions. This is brilliant.
my thoughts as well
Yeah Wii Sports was insanely popular late into the life of the Wii.
It’s cardboard with Nintendium built into it.
TheMarioManiac Invincible cardboard then.
if the vr robot game is good im sold
peter skrobola It's not VR. It just tracks your head. Sorry.
it isn’t vr
Sadly it is not vr just head tracing:(
its not VR my son. Its an open goggle that looks edgy
Man nintendo really thinks outside the box. Pun intended
You meant pun Nintendo
It makes sense that it would cost $70, the cost of pretty much any game now is about $60 and that leaves $10 of cardboard.
OMG WHO DID THIS Exactly! Perfectly priced. Dont know why people are complaining.
I'm the butthurt fanboy that wanted Nintendo to announce a half-assed port of Smash Bros. How dare Nintendo take their time on the next installment. How dare they come up with something innovative in the meantime!
Bryant McMillan honestly Nintendo now 😩
Where can I get those pictures behind you?
Waiting for Pokemon Snap with the camera cut out and then watch everyone start liking it...
Yeah, a cardboard box that has you put your eye up to it... the switch is inside showing you the image, one joycon tracks motion on the camera, the other is the interface (or something like that). Or you could just hold the switch normally and do the same thing...
What's about both options? different preferences
I am just gonna get the separate robot kit
Xzarations me to
"We know its a break pedal" You are thinking too narrow my friend. These are NEW CONTROLLERS. U can use that pedal for any pedal related game play. Imagine using that rod to fish in Breath of the Wild! the possibilities are endless. Imagine using the robot kit in Arms!!!
Nintendo employee #1: what should we do will all these spare Nintendo Switch boxes?
Nintendo employee #2: this
2017: we announce nintendo switch, a new way to play games.
2018: We have a amazing product.... CARDBOARD
The Piano was the one that surprised you?
I thought the Robot one surprised me

I want the piano but nothing else... hopefully Nintendo sells them individually down the line...
Exactly my thought. If they sell the piano for 20-30 bucks I am definitely going to get it. (and maybe one of those "RC cars for 10 bucks)
I want the piano too.
Why? Well.....
someBODY
Great video! PSA "funnily" as in "funnily enough" isn't a word or phrase. It's just "funny enough".

If the IR camera can track multiple objects at the time, then I could see Indipendent peripheral on the making. like a DIY Arcade Controller
3:35 “Hex bugs from the yesteryear”
Man that made me feel old for some reason
Imagine if they released it as a toolkit, the impact it could have introducing people to the maker community
FUZE Basic is coming to switch in Q2. They'd be idiots to not include IR camera functionality.

worker 1: and the games would be Nintendo Labo: piano
Is the car mount from the commercial a product? I really want to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe mounted in the car.
I want that painting of the smallfry SO BAD!
My concern is having the space to store all this cardboard, some of the ToyCons look pretty big. Will you be able to deconstruct them when not in use? Some of them look so complex that once you have made them you won’t be able to flatten them out.
I really cant wait for DIY-ers to make the peripherals with more premium quality materials!
I’m So Excited To Get The Plastic Moving Toy One
I'm very curious if that piano works remotely as well as they showed in the trailer. I can't imagine an IR camera being responsive enough to really replicate it well.
I don't see a durabillity problem with the cardboard stuff, just strenghten it with resin

Joey Rivera Yes! Exactly.
But, if it wasn't cardboard would it be any cheaper? Nintendo has made a freaking VR experience for that much!

6:37 Don't have any children
Cue the sad music
I don’t even care that this is directed at children, this is freaking awesome! I would totally build and play with these and I’m 25, gaming is designed to be fun and Nintendo are ticking all the right boxes! P.s Please subscribe to my channel.
why not make it out of heavy plastic?
i admit i am interested in the robot kit though not gonna pre order or anything gonna wait and see what its like in action first
I never know how to feel about these things because I always feel wrong.
This would be amazing with the new FUZE programming thing for the switch
I'm incredibly excited about this.
Alex I'm disappointed that you didn't predict this in your video of the possible uses of HD rumble!
I hope there will a update on Mario oddesey so that u can use the fishing labor to fish in oddesey
I have to say I'm impressed. Its the perfect toy for kids to be creative. If my kid asks about this I have no choice but to say yes.
it's funny that: when you buy a normal bit of software, it's worth is the quality of the software.
The mini-bots. They're using the HD Rumble feature... on a large-scale, controllable Hex-Bug Nano.
I can imagine Nintendo upgrading to add an IR camera for the left JoyCon so that there are more posibilities.
I love that this is Nintendo's answer to VR
I'm am a little confused about one thing; so they are putting the same game in both the variety and robot sets? Are they allowing you to buy the cardboard separately so you don't get the same game if you choose to buy both? I don't know how much more the robot set, for example, would cost without the game. Am I the only one seeing this?
Eco-Friendly solution to the dying tactile toy play pattern. Nintendo Saves!!!! I think the price is just right. Also, cardboard can be tough as well.
The Robot kit requires more joycons though... One on your head, two on your ankles and one on the back... 2 pairs.
If you have a 3D printer you could probably print more durable versions of the cardboard parts.
Software isn’t an excuse for price, their the type of games you can get for 3 quid on your phone.
Maybe it's not normal cardboard...
Florin Bîrlog There's a game with it.
NoirCore I know I was saying that it may be a tougher cardboard
Florin Bîrlog lol
You can tell its a half backed idea because it drops on 420, also the build quality looks amazing /s
wait...the motor has 2 joycon in the strearing wheel thing. How can there be a breaking panel?
It's connected by a string
If the layouts are free you might be able to 3d print them and make them stirdy
Read the update comment so scrap that
man i love your posters! where do you get them from ??
ala slipknot his friends painted them for him.
The best part about it?
It comes out on 4/20.
Maybe Nintendo will make a type of Joycon with a UV camera and then there are retroreflectors around your room and then bam VR for the switch but that would be expensive. lol
I just want the Telescope which is closest to a VR and the RC bots to battle
I don't think that you will be able to make it at home because Nintendo might use a type of reflected cardboard or tape that will make it almost in possible to recreate at home, so you better buy it.
The idea is interesting, but now my question is, will the games suck XD?
They showed a lot more of how the cardboard works rather than the games themselves. So I wonder how interesting the games that go with the cardboard will be.
I think the price is okay. My problem is, that I'm forced to buy the full pack :D I just want the piano :D
Lhûgion I think they'll be sold also separately.
Same. Let's get our hopes up.
I think is pretty cool but I'm only gonna buy the vr robot game if it gets good reviews
has anyone wondered what the camera does when your not useing it maybe it records you??!!
I just cant wait for the adult doll versions.....ooooh the chafe.;)
Nintendo Labo really is a stroke a genius and i will buy the set that really interest me aka the robot and piano
Do you need more then two joy con cause I just got a pro controller
Tjgaming _ so far all the games they showed only use 2 joycon
You could copy the templates, make a stencil, and ya got unlimited parts
The pedal is for the car not the motorbike
Repair it yourself? If a kid leaves it out somewhere and it gets wet, what then? And patching it with other pieces of cardboard probably won’t work as easily as Alex is suggesting. Glad people are excited, but personally, I think this is a dud.
The shot gun might be a duck hunt minigame.
