    Hi Bryan- great to see you back in the Winds!! You sure had some stormy weather to deal with this time! Lots of rain, wind, hail and quick drops in temperature, brr!! You're a pro at handling all that... I'm guessing you couldn't have a campfire due to elevation rules, or else the wood was just too wet. Great to see the conditions when you were able to film... it's such an amazing area and I loved seeing all the lakes, meadows, rock formations and mountains. Seems like the bugs weren't a big problem, hopefully. Even though there were quite a few people around, looks like it was pretty quiet and you had some private camp sites. I've got the Winds on my wish list ... but first I need to get my pack weight down...lol! Awesome adventure! - Jen

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  Год назад +1

      Thanks Jen! Yea, lots of storms. Actually there was a lot of rain all summer, although not great for backpacking, it was good for plants and reducing wildfires. For the last three or four years I've been trying to do a trip in Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho, but couldn't because of all the wildfires and smoke. So this year I was able to get there for a five day trip and should have the video posted in a couple of weeks.
      You need to get your pack weight down so you can do a trip in the Winds! :)

      I know! Steve and I just went out for a night and came to the same conclusion! We climbed 2,400’ in 2.5 miles and were pretty worn out! I’ll check out your older video with suggestions and do a little Christmas shopping! We would like to do 3-4 nights on the PCT next summer, but our packs are way too heavy. I’m great for it as far as hiking itself goes. If I get my weight down I’ll be in the Winds for sure!! @@BryanDeLay

    I'm just checking out your beautiful trip video and noting the weather. I plan to hike out of that TH mid Sept and wanted to get a bead on what to expect from mother nature. I think I'll stick in an extra tarp that I can throw up quickly and pack some warm clothing....possibly traction. I really don't want to change my plans, but I can always look for something tamer if it snows or hails too much. : )

      Thanks LMay64! Just got back from the Winds and the weather was much better than last year. Very little rain and warmer than last year. Did four trips in the Winds this year and the lowest temperature was only 36. However, two days after my last trip there was light snow in the higher elevations. Watch the long range weather forecast, it can snow any time of the year in the Winds.

Well, it looks like we were on the trail from the same trailhead at the same time. I think you exited the same day I started, so I probably just missed crossing paths with you! Bryan the weather you experienced reminds of the weather I get in the Winds every time I go. Day after day of dodging lightning storms. I was curious about your original plans from summit lake back to your car. I was told that the pine creek canyon trail is unmaintained and is covered in blowdowns. This is going back a few years so maybe they have cleared it. Have you heard otherwise. I have always wanted to do that loop to avoid doubling back on Pole Creek. Thanks. Love your videos.

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  Год назад

      Thanks JJWGA! Storms in the Winds are very common, although I've been on a few trips there without any storms. I talked to an employ at the outfitter in Pinedale and was told the Pine Mountain Trail did have some blowdowns, but was doable. In fact some of his friends did the trail a few weeks before. Avoiding backtracking on Pole Creek Trail was my goal too.

    Hey Bryan, beautiful scenery from your adventure, as always! You typically wear a Montbell rain jacket. I see you were using the Outdoor Vitals Tushar rain jacket on your trip. I'd be very interested in hearing your review of the Tushar and comparing it to the Montbell with pros and cons!!! I was about to purchase a Montbell Versatile, but seeing you in the Tushar made me rethink my purchase. I appreciate your thoughts.

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  Год назад +1

      Thanks jmash41! Actually the Montbell was just a wind jacket. I've been wearing a Outdoor Research Helium rain jacket in the summer and an old Arc'teryc jacket in the winter, which was wearing out. So I got the Tushar jacket a few months ago and really like it. I'm anxious to see how it does this winter in all day rain in the southern Appalachians. So far for the money and the weight it's a great rain jacket. The Tushar just received the 2023 Best Lightweight Backpacking Shell award from Outdoor Magazine.

    Another good one in the Winds Bryan! I've been watching you for a few years now and you've been around the sun significantly more times than the other backpackers that I watch.
    I'll be 59 in November, backpack a good bit and I was wondering how old you are. I only ask because you seem to be very stable (as in squatting on that rock to scoop water at the 7 minute mark). It's one thing to walk distances but bending at the knees and waist with stability is a different task as we age. You either have incredible genetics or train throughout the year or both. Would you comment and describe your exercise regime assuming you have one?
    Also I gather from your other vids that you live in the TN area? If so when you travel to the Winds do you do other hikes that you don't record, or have family in the area? That's a lot of travel for a 4 day hike. I'm a PA guy and spend a decent amount of time in the Winds/Tetons/Yellowstone. THX in advance!!

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  Год назад +1

      Thanks farbeyonddriben8173! Next week I will complete 71 laps around the sun. First I been flexible my entire life. Second I've been working out almost every day since the late 80's. Also for about 17 years I cycled with a very competitive group with lots of 75 to 100 mile bike rides. Now days I walk 2 to 4 miles with some light jogging 4 to 5 days a week and go to the gym for an hour or more 2 to 3 days a week, depending on my backpacking schedule that week. Since 2011 I've averaged between 75 to 100 nights of backpacking a year. And finally I have a short yoga routine I do 2 to 3 times a week.
      Yes I live in east Tennessee. My trip out west is generally 6 weeks from about Aug. 1 to around Sep 10. I drive and car camp between backpacks. Normally I'll do 3 or 4 backpacking trips while I'm out west. This year I did three trips and filmed 2 trips. The second trip I videoed was in Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho, which I should have posted in a couple of weeks.
      Hopefully I've answered all your questions. If not let me know.

    Hey Bryan, got a trip planned in the winds , late September. Was wondering if hammocks would be a problem? Been watching for a long time, learned a lot from you and enjoy your videos!!

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  8 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much! Hammocks would work in lower elevations, but sub-alpine and alpine areas hammocks would not be possible. So you would have to plan your campsites accordingly.
