If I dared, I would recommend the latest music video from Blackbriar: My soul's demise (stunning symphonic metal with unique and beautiful voice) Wait... did I dare? 😂😂
I think there is less than a 1% chance Geoff's parts were played on a midi keyboard. There may be other post-production magic added, but I can pretty much guarantee he sang all of those parts.
You can see Geoff conducting himself with his hand. He does the same thing as Tim Foust. So he's not singing a single note that's being played out on a keyboard. He does say that he has to sing low bass very quietly, so it's amplified. I don't really know about the very agile parts where he's off-screen.
Geoff arranged this at Cesar's request. And it's beautifully haunting. And makes me cry every time. When they say a capella, they mean it. No instruments used. Geoff uses plugins on his own videos and always credits them. but VP don't cheat. What you are doing is expressing what you think they're doing. You could be wrong. :) And they don't use autotune. Ed Boyer just does the final mix.
I don't think most people realize how much Geoff has perfected his craft. Especially Maggie. He can literally stand there singing dm-dm-dm repeatedly, and you can watch his mouth move, but never hear the pulsing of it.
He doesn't use that for the acapella arrangements - if he had done this in one of his solos he usually does use keyboards. You just heard their natural singing. Ask the Charismatic Voice or Peter Barber. Please don't sell him short, he is a master at what he does.
Yes, it's beautiful, but the idea that Geoff's part is played on a MIDI keyboard? Nope. Yes there is production, but Geoff is very capable. Way more than you're giving him credit for.
This is actually where voiceplay shines the most, and it’s one of their least “produced” pieces. Yes, there is post production and audio mixing. But saying they are doing the harmonies on a midi keyboard is actually an insult to their abilities. Geoff’s baseline is boosted for volume, some parts may be doubled up, etc so that they mix better and sounds are cleaned up. But this video actually came close to saying that they wouldn’t be able to sing this in real life. Sorry, Maggie, but you need to open your mind a little bit. This was the first video of yours that i have watched in a long time, and i am extremely disappointed to the point where I can’t even finish watching it.
This! You refuted every assumption she made with cogent details. Thank you for that. She didn’t say she thought they were doing this or that. She said they WERE doing this or that. She needs to apologize.
@@lisahuff818 I honestly don't know why I'm still subscribed lol. She does this all the time. Really bugged me how she called Geoff's SOS cover "unique"...like yeah we all know that's code for you didn't like it. Very pretentious person.
@@Badger77722 I definitely agree! That's also not impossible though, you have guys like Tuukka Haapaniemi doing very crazy vocal basslines that require a lot of agility
That is one of the main issues I have with this channel. She seems to think she knows absolutely everything and while she is waaaay more knowledgeable than myself, I sometimes question her analysis.
@@vvoof2601 Yeah, she seems to think that nobody can do anything without post production involved. Of course there is some post production, all music uses it, but it’s very minimal
Funny the impossible bass parts you call out are quite possible for him in short recordings he did it in the past but i understand what you mean hehe why don't call him out for an interview on your channel :) pretty sure he would be happy to come to your channel. big love keep going!
This is really a masterpiece of arrangement and emotion. Absolutely one of their best. Love that the house is a character with each person alone with their thoughts.
Of course she's entitled to her opinion! I just wish she'd chosen her words more carefully. By saying Geoffs baseline was "impossible" to sing and the harmonies were "definitely" played on a midi keyboard, she's presenting it (incorrectly) as fact not opinion!
It’s not a good look when you keep dissing the production because YOU think that it has been altered. Have you not seen the hours upon hours of their live footage? Just because YOU can’t do it does not mean that guys at the very top of their profession can not. But you do you. I always say you don’t have to watch if you don’t like it. So, be seeing ya.
Ed Boyer is well known as an audio engineer for many a cappella groups, including VoicePlay, Geoff's solo work, Pentatonix, and I believe Home Free as well. I'm not sure I've heard VoicePlay do anything live since the lockdown, except for some of their shorts and Tik Toks. I don't believe they've gone back to touring yet, although they have performed some live concerts for specific audiences.
Ohh Maggie. Maggie. Cant we just enjoy the song and vocalism. Not everything is "tuned" or corrected. Audio mixing is very complicated. Just loving the song and arrangement❤❤❤❤❤
Voiceplay's parts are pre-recorded before being filmed and then lip-synced during the video shoot. Frankly, I don't know how much electronic manipulation is being done to their recorded parts, but some is possible. This would be a good question to ask to Geoff and other voiceplay members by their patreons during the monthly Q&A sessions voiceplay hosts.
I'd love a reaction to "Home Free" they're a country a capella group, my favorite is "Elvira" with the Oak Ridge Boys, but they have so many good songs and covers!
you're embarrassingly closed minded when it comes to the abilities of others. just because you can't staccato, doesn't mean geoff can't? the "impossible" bassline isn't remotely difficult if you have the range for it.
Love the reaction! EJ's brother Omar has been featured in several voice play videos both of those Brothers can SANG ! Their latest release is the cover of Valhalla Calling ft J None
This song makes me cry thanks guys 😂 trust me take my words for truth it sucks being single ex today it's even harder no one just wants love we hate each other so much it hurts to watch hold your love one so close so close and never let them go because you don't want to be a old man alone love you all be amazing to each other life is sooooooooooooiioiooooooo short
If you have not heard Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace", then you really have to hear this cover. To say that it is mind blowing just isn't enough and clearly there is an opertic quality to his voice. I would love to see your reaction and hear your opinion on this one.
Thia is fantastic. So rich and gorgeous. I do not mind production, if it enhances the sound or provides new possibilities. I loved your in depth and very informative analysis. 💘
Blessings Maggie, did you ever review The Righteous Brothers in You'll Never Walk Alone (written by Rogers and Hammerstein for Carousel)? If you haven't, you need to, it is VERY short but very dramatic!
I just revisited this reaction trying to make sense of how clueless you were and the statements you made as fact. You really need to take this down or retract your statements. You could not be more wrong. My southern grandmother would say someone’s getting too big for their britches.
@Maggie Reneé miss Maggie , im recovering slowly , had a bad crash , truck is gone , broken leg and cracked pelvis , let miss trixie know I won't be dancing anytime soon , oh btw , steering wheel got my neck , not gonna be singing any time soon either. The fact that VoicePlay uses post production effects is not a secret. But to my untrained ear I can’t tell the difference most of the time. Having an in depth discussion on how their songs are artificial makes me like the song a little less, and makes me regret hearing this reaction a little bit
As a bass singer, granted without the massive lifelong hours of practice and rehearsal as Geoff, but those lines are doable as heard. I think what you are hearing is something Geoff frequently does especially for lower register notes which is he scoops up to the correct pitch. And the runs he does like a bass guitar I can do too. Honestly I unsubscribed because of this reaction. A simple statement of something like “this is my opinion of what I’m hearing” or this what I believe I’m hearing” might have kept me on board. Might. I'm nowhere near as good as Geoff and I can sing them with no problem with the exception of his subharmonics.

I'm sure all of us have heard plenty off bass singers do stuff similar to the "impossible" part (mentioned around 20:15) live, no? Just me?
geoff has definitely done bass lines like that live before the pandemic when they were touring
Geoff did an arpeggio section in The Dragonborn Comes that was a lot longer, and (IMO) a lot more difficult to do.
