You don't have to be a huge metal fan to appreciate this one. I know the song, it's impossible not to. But I'm not a metal head. When they announced the premier I went back and listened to it, twice through. I was thirsting for Eli's grit - we all know that metal edge he gets when he wants to - and when he went off I lost it: then vioLayne stepped in and I just burst into tears. So beautiful. All of it. And that was the topper that put me over the edge. This is my new favorite, hands down.

People may say "Oh they had to bring in an instrument," but how many Metallica songs do you hear and think "I bet a fiddle would be perfect here." And yet Voiceplay made the violin work in a Metallica cover. Mad props to each of them for their talent and skill in pulling this off. Great reaction. Loved every minute of it.

That's exactly why I love VoicePlay. Some other band like Pentatonix or whatever would've probably changed the song to the point where it's unrecognisable. These guys usually sing fairly close to the original in terms of grit where it's needed, harmony (with some surprises to be sure but usually welcome ones), and soul. They even sing in the original key most of the time, unless it's adjusted a semitone or two for dramatic effect. They don't need to move it up or down in order to hit the notes more easily, since they have unlimited range. Geoff can go lower than a grand piano, so the bass register is always covered, Eli can belt literally any note (I'm talking Chandelier levels of high, all that while shouting like a rockstar, just look up their Valhalla Calling cover), and Cesar and other guys (J, Earl, Omar, Anthony, etc. depending on the year) can cover the falcetto if needed. There are some songs that can be adjusted a bit, like when Geoff did a cover of Misty Mountains Cold and moved it down a semitone I didn't mind. Others, especially rock songs, lose the nostalgic feel if messed with too much. It's probably just me and my duckling syndrome, but when I listen to a song for a while I remember the way it sounds. I don't have perfect pitch or anything, but my ear is decent enough where it can pick up on the difference in tonality. Imagine Nothing Else Matters in like Fm or D#m, I would lose my mind. These guys keep most of the arrangement intact, like the intro and stuff, but add fun little additional harmonies and throw in a bunch of intertwined voices. When J belts "never cared for what they do" in the last chorus, Cesar and Eli repeat the lyrics delayed by two bars and harmonised differently, but it's a cool addition and it doesn't change the song too much. These guys aren't simply showing off without giving a crap about the song like some other a capella guys do (I have literally heard some barbershop type band sing a great melancholic Cm song in like D9 or whatever major jazz key they went for, can't remember, it was horrible), VoicePlay actually give a lot of soul.

Another reactor was complaining about j's lack of grit. But I think that added a more emotional tone to the song that really makes this cover so amazing. Part of my background has been transposing and arranging music from many genres to fit high school bands and their instruments. I can tell you right now, this arrangement from Geoff is jaw dropping. I know this song very well and hearing what he did to make the voices match the original instrumentation is insane! The intro and outros aren't perfect to the original, but it would take more than 5 people to meet the need for completely mirroring the Metallica instrumental... and then, the logistics would take away any fun of doing this cover. I feel Geoff did just the right amount of omission, while adding more to the original bassline to make this absolute a cappella perfection. Don't even get me started on Layne's heartfelt violin solo; that, too, took a little bit of work and practice to get that solo to this level on a violin.

I like all kinds of music, so I was familiar with Metallica and this song. Had no idea how much I needed an a cappella version of it in my life, though. It is exactly this kind of daring that places VoicePlay above all others in my opinion- real art is never created without some risk involved; pushing the boundaries of what's been done, or assumed possible, is a very real element. VoicePlay don't just sing amazingly. They create vocal art.

Pausing for comment, fine, but you really don't have to with VoicePlay. They never block their videos. They pay all the copyright royalties of songs they cover, and aren't tied to a record label. In fact Geoff has said that they will make a cent from Boy Bands in Five Minutes because all the royalties they had to pay will never be covered. Almost all reactors have been blown away by this, it's a measure of Geoff's genius in arranging that they find that fine line you mention. Can't remember whether you've seen their cover of Dream On, another good rock cover.

  • @janetdw
    @janetdw Год назад +8

Great reaction. I don’t mind the pauses at all because you have something to contribute. And that’s why we prefer some reactors over others. I have no interest in watching somebody listen to the song making faces and not adding anything of value. So when a reactor stops and the song ends up being 2-3 times as long,if I’m getting something out of it, I figured it was time well spent.
I do not care for metal bands at all, but I had faith in VoicePlay so I went to check out Metallica‘s song. I still don’t care for metal, but the song is amazing.
You said “never, in my imagination, would I have thought an a capella version of Metallica would work “
I thought:” never, in my imagination, would I have thought an a capella version of Metallica would become my favorite of theirs“
I think that they captured the spirit of the song without trying to imitate the band. And it’s something I try to remember- they aren’t doing a cover of Metallica song, they’re doing a cover of a song the Metallica did. They’re not trying to be Metallica. They are just trying to present the song in a whole new way. And it works. Wow does it work! 🤯
I love how Layne switches from vocals to beatboxing to the violin, back to beatboxing and then back to vocals. And that last note on the violin bled right into the vocals perfectly.🎵🎻🎶
One thing about the pauses: if you stop at a pretty pivotal moment, think about rewinding just a little so that we don’t lose that continuity. Believe me, we don’t mind hearing something a second time!

Home Free is my favorite a cappella group, with VoicePlay coming in a veryclose second. Both groups dropped an amazing new video on Friday the 13th, Home Free's being the title track of their all original (well, 12 of the 14 tracks anyway) album So Long Dixie. While I love the song and I love HF's video, this one outshines it, totally blows me away every time I watch it. It's been a hoot watching reactor after reactor get their minds blown over that beautiful high vocal note just as VioLayne kicks in. I'm saving up for a possible Home Free show this summer and my wallet was pretty empty for this month but I said the hell with that and got this and Metallica's versions to add to my "out and about" playlist for when I go out.
Layne also plays the violin (along with J. None) in their Warriors video. Other than a few VoicePlay Minis, this is the second video J. None has been with the group since joining the navy. The first was Friends on the Other Side. I heard they had to delay this one a bit, waiting for him to get leave. Well worth it!

I love your reaction! I LOVE Metallica! I grew up listening to them, we (my brother, sister, and I) used to literally go to sleep listening to Metallica’s Black Album. They are my my safe space, which might sound weird because just looking at me, I don’t look like I’d listen to more of the heavy metal stuff, but if I’m stressed or upset or can’t sleep even they always help center me, and level me out… I guess it has to do with the heavy beat? Idk but I absolutely adore them and hold their music really close to my heart (we grew up surrounded by so many genres of music my playlists would surprise most of my friends, jump from country, to show tunes/broadway to heavy metal/classic rock, to Disney, to dubstep/ICP, to Big Band… the double takes and confused looks 😆) I think that’s why VoicePlay is such a great fit for me they also love so many different styles of music too! I’ll admit I was a little hesitant to listen to this one, the song is so important to me but they did an amazing job with the song. I’m so glad you enjoyed it and got so excited like I did when I first heard it.
The only suggestion I have about pausing is when you do I recommend you jump back a bit (or to the beginning of that section of video) just so you don’t miss any thing, they do so many amazing things that can be so fast and it can be so easy to miss amazing super quick moments. Can we just appreciate what you said there...
"They can't keep up with Metallica with just their voices, so they had to bring in a violin."
If anything, that's MORE of a compliment to VoicePlay.

Not a metalhead. Didn't have it in my house growing up, but I loved Metallica specifically from the first time I heard one of their songs. Seeing your reaction and DeadGrl Superstar's reaction make me wish I'd grown up with it more. I enjoyed it and Layne and Eli absolutely killed it. But it was way more powerful seeing the reactions of people who are deeply into this genre of music.

This rocked, didn't it? Have you heard their covers of 'Dream On' by Aerosmith and 'Carry On My Wayward Son' by Kansas yet? If not... you definitely should!

I am a rock fan, but much earlier than Metallica. But I’ve found that there isn’t much of anything VoicePlay (particularly Layne and Geoff) can’t do if they set their minds to it.

Love Metallica and VoicePlay, and this cover is great. Would like to mention Van Canto, that has been doing a cappella metal for a long time, including Metallica.

Its like how people, the first time, shot at Zak for hearing about him fiddling the solo in Sandman. Then they heard it. And never again said a word.

In my opinion the violin is another voice and they only use it sparingly. Someone on another channel said they cheated but I think they're just picky.

It sounded in the beginning you were wary of VP pulling it off but you kept an open mind! A very few metal heads went into the reaction that they would not like VP because you don't touch Metallica. Even they had to admit it was good but would not say great. If you liked this try Wayward Son, Warriors and Dream On by VP. Each one of VP brings something to the table in every song. Geoff who arranged this one and Layne who basically split arranging duties are masters at their craft. VP is the hardest working group. From arranging, to lighting, staging, directing, costuming, technical background, they do it themselves. Mixing sounds they do hire it out and some makeup. I look forward to the future of this group!

Nice commentary. Friendly advice...pause the songs at the end of each chorus instead of in the middle or a random spot. I think you're missing a lot of the build-up each chorus brings when you pause mid "build".

    • @1MannzOpinion

I appreciate it. I know it can be annoying but one of the best ways to fight copyright is by breaking up the song. I've avoiding it completely a few times by pausing frequently. I try to find convenient moments to do it during natural pauses but it unfortunately doesn't always work out that way. I'm working on doing better though or at least backing up more to get the full effect of big moments when I can.
