    I suggest reading the writings of the guppy breeders of 50 or more years ago. Their techniques are the ones to follow.

    Thanks for posting this. It's a very concise and well organized rundown of the basics of line breeding. I have a playlist of useful fishkeeping videos that I save for later reference. This video made that list!

    I had a mutt guppy that had 3 black dots vertically in a straight line on his back tail.
    He produced 2 offspring that looked just like him.
    This was in a 5 gal.
    So this started my project.
    I have his line in a 55 gal and a 300 gal tub outside just for summer.
    Gonna get the numbers up and cull males only for now.
    I’ve produced 6 males that mostly have the look.

    Sorry but putting it nicely, your friend literally knows nothing about guppies or crossing them. It doesn't take years. I created true breeding yellow lace snakeskins in 2 crosses. I created a true breeding black lace snakeskin in 3 crosses. No one else has those fish. Your friend's strain is just a mixed guppy no matter what name it's given. It's not a real strain, just a variation of a half black blue.

    I have a question regarding the male-female ratio. I’ve heard a lot of different ones (1:2; 1:5; etc.) which one did you recommend?

    • @ReneesZooTube
      @ReneesZooTube 3 года назад +4

      I've found that for fancy strains with big tails, 1 male to 2 females can work just fine. With Swordtail guppies or smaller tail guppies, I've found that 1 male for 3 females works better. The smaller, faster males can overwhelm just 2 females per male and stress them out too much.

      I would say 2 males and 4 females would be much better, but that isn’t to say e males and 3 females would not work.

    I agree with what he says but no offense, though I agree, these are basic tips that will prove out over like he stated 6 years but I am saying this with being in genetics for over 20 years breeding other animals in which Guppies has as well which will reduce the time on many all while getting a guppy or anything to breed true and yes I am working on a few. It is complicated to explain but somebody must be very familiar with the dominant, co dominate and recessive genes. Once mastered, then either the co dom and recessive genes can be doubled and quadrupled up over years for other proven genetics to breed true. Many of these Co Dom and recessive genes is clear as day. But I am working on a few that will breed true in just two generations guaranteed. It is important not to cross the dominant gene however, always keep that the same otherwise a person creates a hybrid that may look good but it is not a pure strain that many people won't want. This is where I disagree with him as he creates hybrids. I am staying away from crossing the dominant genes myself.
