Fran's JP VA is good, but her EN voice has that 'Bjork' feeling that puts it over the top. And it's on the other Viera, too. It really sets them apart as this mysterious, mystical, furtive woodland race, and not just a race of hot treebunnies.

Yes, that's why I like the English version better. Specially they all have different accents. The Japanese version sounds like a generic anime voice.

When I played this as a kid, it was the first time I never cringed while playing an English adaptation of an originally Japanese game (or any adapted media honestly). English doesn't usually translate well but they did a terrific job. The only problem is how grainy the voice quality is; I had the same complaint when I was a kid and I hope that improved with the HD release. Otherwise, bravo to the scriptwriters and voice actors for trying to sound similar to the original while maintaining their own flare.

Same. FFXII remains near the top of my list of best voice acting in games. Balthier and Fran in particular are just fantastic.
FFXIV is just as good in parts, but the simple fact it has so many voiced characters means it's not quite as consistently good.

  • @simonsalgueiro6217
    @simonsalgueiro6217 6 лет назад +81

English seemed to put more emphasis on creating accents for each part of ivalice and race, and thats a +.
Except maybe Ashe and Penelo, English are much better imo. Balthier's english tone fits his character just perfectly. Basch, even when the english one is good, has this more hard life voice in EN that suits him so much. EN Larsa is miles above the japanese one. Same as Vaan. But what makes the biggest difference for me is the Fran English dub. Man, at first sounds a bit weird, but after some time the actress gives Fran such a mystical, mysterious and pwoerful aura with her voice acting. Plus, how well they gave Vieras personalities with the accent. The japanese Viera sound like BDSM matrons.

While I will play with Japanese voices I will say that this is probably the best English dub I've heard. I'm a player who always plays JRPG's in Japanese when it is available but this is one of the very few that should be played in English, the dubbing is outstanding, the game was made for the western market so they wanted it to have a perfect english dubbing. It's funny because I'd love to be able to play FF X in Japanese but you simply can't on consoles, here you can but it is useless because the english dubbing is way better.

I'm one of those people that usually refuse to watch dubbed anime because Japanese voice overs are more to my taste. That being said, however, I DEFINITELY preferred the English dubbing for this game over the Japanese dubbing. The English felt so much more emotional and suitable. After playing through a bit of the game again with The Zodiac Age, here's my rankings for the main cast:
Balthier - EN. Gideon Emery pretty much defines Balthier with his performance.
Vaan - Possibly prefer JP more. Neither voice actor really stands out here but the JP voice sounds less 'squashed'.
Ashe - Probably the only one where I decisively prefer the JP VA more. She does a great job, but the EN does a pretty good job mimicking her expressions.
Basch - No preference. Both pull off the 'grizzled war vet' voice well enough without going over the top.
Penelo - Pleasantly surprised that the JP voice actor makes her sound young without making her sound like a squealer. Both are good but I like the JP one more, it sounds pretty soft and refreshing.
Fran - NA voice, no contest.
Vayne - I like the JP voice more, although he sounds more obviously villainous (which I don't think is true for his character). EN is good but kinda just sounds like a generic RP british accent.

Someone said in a different comment that this was a poor scene to show off Fran's ENG dub because of the emotions in that scene, but if its that hard to portray emotions while staying in character, I'll take the Japanese voice acting over that mess.
Fran's JP voice acting fits the mature and wise character she's meant to be more anyway.

The voice actors of both versions did an amazing job. To a lot of people the English version stands out because English dubs of Japanese games usually don't have much effort put into them, and FFXXII's English dub is miles ahead of that. Also, the fact that the original Japanese dub lacks the usual "kawaii" and dramatic overacting that's present in most JRPGs and anime probably also made this job easier for the English cast as they were not forced to reproduce gimmicky "anime" acting and instead were able to express the characters in a more natural and enjoyable manner.
I don't really get the "these characters don't have huge eyes and colorful hair therefore are only allowed to speak English" arguement though. Contrary to popular belief, not only anime characters speak Japanese.

The problem with Japanese language if you understand it, is that it lacks a lot of creative language. Not to say there isn't creative language in Japanese but it's very rarely used. Video games, and a lot of media from Japan just use the same old phrasing. A lot of archetypes. Young male leads being all boku boku or ore ore, Knightly older characters using sonkeigo. Female leads being all wayo. Evil villains speaking all slow and deep and kono ore sama wa kiisamara wo blah blah blah.

"The problem with Japanese language if you understand it, is that it lacks a lot of creative language" This is a huge understatement. Have you taken the time to study Japanese? Are you aware of all the onomatopoeia they use? Or the various ways of saying a word, or feeling? Do you not consider this creative? If it is not used in games a lot is a different thing, but I consider English a way blander language, with not a lot of flavour.

    • @tw4898
      @tw4898 5 лет назад +5

Alaby studied enough to get N1. Perhaps I should have been more specific, there’s creative language but it’s rarely used in media. You’re right that giongo has a lot of interesting examples, but when you try to use more creative language with Japanese people you often hear “あーそれ使わないな”. Sometimes that’s frustrating. It’s like why did I study this shit if no one uses it lol

English dub is fine, but the sound quality is horrible in comparison (whether it's the compression or mixing that does it), and the lip syncing works noticeably better in the Japanese dub. I don't speak Japanese, (though I'm used to listening to it), just English, (though not my fist language; still I'm used to it), but my impressions are:
Vaan - EN: good voice. JP: so, so. Obs: None fits the character so well, though. I find him a boring character, anyway, and it might have influenced my impressions. I only got to start liking him in other games, where he developed his personality more.
Balthier - EN: most amazing, defines the character and adds another layer to his personality. Makes him sound like the main character of the story, many times. JP: not bad, but easy to ignore. Once you've heard the EN voice, it might even begin to sound bad at the ear.
Basch - EN: good, but I just feel like he always sounds the same most of the game, no matter what, and it makes the character sound a little too much devoided of emotion. JP: I liked "the voice" very much, also the feelings it passes, but when I close my eyes I just can't stick it to the character. It sounds out of place. So I keep looking at him, haha.
Fran - EN: one of the best things I've ever heard in voice acting, the tone and accent likely redefined the entire race, not only the character. That scene isn't a good one to show it, though, since Fran sounds too raspy there, 'cause of feelings. JP: good one, sounds very mature and it fits her age, thought you might ignore her, except for that reason, 'cause it sounds pretty much like a character you've seen all around in anime. Besides that, like with Balthier, once you've heard the EN voice, it mostly starts to sound bad, at least a little, but only by comparison, let's be fair. 'Cause it's not really bad, at all.
Ashe - EN: very good, adds personality to the character and the actor captures the feelings in the text and scene and passes them through the tone changing and everything else very well. I really like that. JP: incredibly, I find it even better in all those aspects. I don't even need to understand Japanese to feel what the character is feeling and trying to pass through its voice. It's the best JP voice in this game in my opinion. By far!!!
Penelo - EN: good voice, makes her sound like and older sister who cares for Vaan and keeps him in the right way. Might even sound a little boring, sometimes. I mean, boring like and older and wiser sister might be expected to sound, haha. JP: even a little better, though here she sounds younger, not mainly mature or wise like an older sister. Instead, she sounds like a sweet girl who cares for Vaan and does her best for his good. It's a nice acting.
P.S: I don't care so much for the other characters as to comment about them, except for one who was not meant to be compared, I guess. Judge Ghis, a villain I like far better than Vaine or Gabranth, even though he's supposed to be a minor character. His EN voice is very good, sounds like a person of a higher position who knows he's in a higher position, but also a bit sensible . Fits a villain very well, makes him look like more than just the average villain, which I find more impressive by the fact he is not a major character. He kinda stole the scene, for me. JP: regular, for me.

I only watch sub as I find the English dubs to nearly always be horrible, but this is one of the few that gives the original a run for it's money. It's not too often that the English manages to capture the feel of the original, much less make it better. I liked the voices for both versions on almost every character, but my preference goes as follows:
    Vaan: Japanese
    Balthier: English
    Basch: No preference
Fran: English hands down. Her Japanese voice is great, but her English is amazing.
Ashe: Japanese. Her English is the one voice I didn't like all that much. It's ok.
    Penelo: Japanese
    Larsa: English
    Vayne: No preference
