    I consider the 80s and 90s as the golden era of pop up headlights. You had so many great cars with them. To name some; Diablo, Countach, 180, AE86 Trueno, MR2, RX-7, F40, Corvette, Porsche 928, to name a few. I know that there are more ferraris, but I can't remember their names.

    I think pop-up headlights could still work, if a manufacturer really wanted them their engineers would certainly find a way.

      Due to pedestrian safety laws, pop up headlights are dead for good unfortunately

    • @C.I...
      @C.I... 3 года назад

      @@JMBA7X I've thought about this a lot. My solution would involve the headlight also having a hinge around the front of the light. Then, a solenoid at the rear could be activated by the same sensors that engage bonnet safety systems, and the headlight could fall/be pulled flat backwards into the car when a pedestrian impact is detected.
      I always thought the rule pop-ups were breaking was the one prohibiting lights that move in any way, though.

    One thing I would have loved to hear (and I could have missed it) is the fact that with pop-up headlights, the hoodline itself can be lower than with Integrated lights. While this does offset figures, it still shows similar horizontal and vertical separation as you displayed (just to a lesser extent). Another thing about the Rx7 that made it so good was how LOW the hoodline was in comparison to other vehicles of the time. An ultra-low hoodline and popups results in better aero during the day, which is when you should be racing anyways. :D

    Great video. As a point of interest, look at the Corvettes that raced at the 24 hours of LeMans in 1969 to see how they fared in the headlights to reduce drag, weight, and increase reliability.

      GraysGarage I'd also like to see a more in-depth look at the C4 Corvettes as they designed the pop-ups with aerodynamics in mind. Instead of just popping up, the whole housing would rotate so it could be more streamlined. Very useful when the ZR-1 set it's endurance record!

    • @G31mR
      @G31mR 9 лет назад

      Jake Swierczek The backside of the pop-up is always the same, no matter what method is used to "raise" the headlight. There is no difference in the "streamlining". Look at any pop-up headlight and you will see this....

    great vid, keep them coming! I had suspected the pop up headlights on my MKII MR2 created a great deal of drag, but I did not realize the vortex height may reach as high as the top of the windshield! I installed "Revision 6" low rise headlights a few years back, and expect they are much better since the body panel at the top of the pop up is only ~10 degrees above horizontal, compared with ~45 degrees above horizontal with stock pop ups.
    Thanks for the vids, I like both the technical content and the historical context!

  • @G31mR
    @G31mR 10 лет назад +7

    Yes, a car that has it's pop-ups UP suffers a significant drag penalty.....BUT with the pop-ups DOWN the aero is significantly better than with aerodynamic headlights (non pop-ups). Pop-ups also allow the use of much more efficient headlights than the tiny projectors that must be used with modern aero headlights. There ARE advantages in pop-ups.

    • @justaparps8088

      I just started thinking about electrical cars. Technicaly since pop up lights are bad for fuel efficency& speed. Then what about if they could be used on electrical cars, since electricity itself is cheaper? and electricity powered cars dont drive at high speeds. Basically right now on the market, there are some bubbles, leaf and tesla s. I would like to see also something resembling 90's sports car whit pop ups, but running on something cheaper.

    • @TheLaXandro
      @TheLaXandro 9 лет назад

      JustaParps the problem here is, electric cars' weakest point is range. You're lucky if your car lasted 100 km on one charge. And because at night you not only increase drag, but also turn on headlights, which guzzle A LOT of energy, your 50 km turn into 25 km, which leaves you somewhere inbetween home and whereever you went to. But day-only electric cars without headlights may be an interesting concept, but not for this discussion.

  • @motionalysisbyken
    @motionalysisbyken 6 лет назад

    I think the main point is that, with 'pop up' headlights, the surrounding bodywork is lower which is better for the frontal cross-section during the times the headlights are 'down'. Assuming the headlights are only used on a needs basis, ie darkness, the impact they have on aero is less because they would, hopefully, be travelling slower. I love my MR2 SW20...Mr. G! thank you for a great series

  • @petroelb
    @petroelb 7 лет назад

    I believe there was one other major change in regulations that caused the demise of the pop-up headlights - sometime right around 1990 the regulations in the USA (and probably elsewhere) changed to allow the use of molded poly-carbonate headlight assemblies with a replaceable bulb. Prior to that, regulations required a sealed beam headlamp so auto manufacturers were stuck using headlights that were either round or rectangular and had a more or less flat front. There's no way to make that look good on the front of a sports car, so they hid them away with pop-up headlights. The regulatory change paved the way for the nice aerodynamically friendly headlights we see on vehicles today.

    I have a C5 Z06. Note that the "fixed roof coupe" aka FRC (which is the Z06 design) is different that the standard c5. I am very interested to see these compare. GM claims that the FRC design was done as a weight reduction. I am wondering if the drag penalty is worth the weight savings?
    Also, I am highly interested in seeing the effects of front/rear splitters, wheel deflectors, and hood vents.
    Cant wait for more of your videos!

    To comply with the 'fail safe rule' Honda, at least on the 3rd gen Prelude, allows you to manually turn the motors when they aren't powered. If there is power to them you get a lot of resistance and they won't move much, pull the fuses and you can raise and lower them manually.

  • @iankeith763
    @iankeith763 5 лет назад

    I expected drag with pop ups, but those figures surprised me. I own MR2, SW20. Pop ups look so cool. Modern headlamps, so often look so ugly, blobby, like Marty Feldman eyes. The other issue with plastic headlamps, is they cloud over, not letting out a great deal of light. Cost of replacements is really high, I expect much higher than the cost of the extra fuel used, I am not a fan of modern cars, I will stick with classics. BTW, love the Corvette C1, it would look at home in an art museum.

  • @CrossWindsPat

    Aaaaand now I am really thinking about deleting the pop ups on my C5Z! I always knew how bad these are, but the thumbnail alone says a 1000 words. How can I street race people at night and have fun knowing im deploying a literate air brake the entire run?!?!?!

  • @synXero
    @synXero 10 лет назад +3

    Another good video. I would say it'd be interesting to quantify in a tangible sense what 5-11% drag increase means. For example, if you take the Corvette C5 example, what measurable effect is there on speed / fuel efficiency / high speed stability / etc. assuming no other factors change? For example, if I drove a measured 300 miles in my C5 with the lights folded down, and then a measured 300 miles with the lights popped up (but negating having the lights emitting light so as to eliminate electronic drain on the engine etc.) what would the predicted difference be, using your proposed figure of ~9%? Just a thought!

    Another thing that would be really interesting in my opinion!
    If you could take a look at & explain the principles of the 'NACA duct' as seen in various super fast ferrari's bodywork, that would show an interesting side of aerodynamics. I believe they work by pulling air out of the inside of the car i.e. To remove heat from the engine etc. would be keen to see some testing with various forms of duct designed to do this for example. Cheers!

    Would it be possible to create popup headlights with a better aerodynamic profile though?
    The front of those lights is clearly a flat plane and hard edges. But Surely there are more refined shapes possible than that?
    Or does the mechanical design of the popup mechanism limit what you can do with it?

    I get that you exaggerated the model to make things more visually obvious, but that's a very dangerous decision to make. You must know this. Because albeit the first in line consequence will be the same independently of the size, the following consequences (aka chain of events) will differ. And in this case in particular, the flow of bubbles past the popup headlights got hugely affected. That's why I have to disagree with the affirmation saying that the exaggerated popup headlights represent the same behavior generally.
    It is clear to me that the exaggerated model created an extreme separation of flow, so big in fact that the whole bubble-flow onwards is disturbed, the flow never gets the chance to stabilize itself, it never hits the windshield nor the roof or back. I can't say for sure, but I assume this may be a very inaccurate representation, because if the popup headlights model was represented by the same size ratio of the other parts the bubble-flow WOULD have acted differently. It might have hit the windshield, stabilizing itself, thus also probably following the roof design whilst also not having such a big disturbance.

    the reason they are gone are because of stupid federal pedestrian safety laws, nothing to do with aerodynamic to be honest with you.

      No, not really. 2004 was when the pedestrian safety stuff was introduced. And that was Europe and still is Europe only. It's very much possible to have traditional pop-ups today in the US. But the drag, fuel-efficiency, and weight are more important to manufactures. But even before 2004, from 2000-2004 the number of cars with pop-ups rapidly decreased. They just weren't viable in the modern age. But I still do love them and want them to come back. They really allow for a sleek front-end.
