If you're about to apply for a photography job or know someone who is... here is some valuable advice. It's a quick, obvious and high impact way to stand out.
Hi, it’s Matt here and I've got some advice for photographers who are applying for photography jobs.
We get between two and four people inquire to work with us each week, and I can tell you the one thing that everyone does. And if nothing else, don't do this and you've got some chance of standing out.
This was actually brought front of mind a couple of years ago, when we advertised for an Art Director and Stylist position. We collected CV's and it was fascinating to see, for such a visual position, everyone's CV's were pages of words. Each CV had two to three pages of words, words, words, words, words. There were two or three people out of many who put some pictures of their work into their applications.
So that kind of sparked this awareness and made me think about it. Over the years I’ve seen more and photographer applications, and they're all the same - one to three pages of words applying for a position as a photographer.
I was confused in the beginning, then it got a little frustrating, and it then turned to disbelief. I'm telling you, it's a huge opportunity… everyone is sending us emails and resumes (which is awesome and a major compliment by the way) of just words.
So, if nothing else, do the opposite of that. Put some pictures in there. You're a creator, you're an artist, you're a photographer. And it's an open space for you to try something different and stand out.
I’m not why more people are doing it, possibly because people have this preconceived idea what a CV or what a resume should be, and we just fall into that trap. Maybe people are nervous about putting their work out there and it not being good enough, or being judged for it, or it being the wrong type of work. These are all valid reasons and I understand. But there lays a huge opportunity to stand out.
So, if you're applying for any creative position, particularly in photography, show some work,
    definitely show some work.
I wish you all the best and success.

That is mind blowing that you would apply for photography job without actually showing what you can do. Thank you for the great advice… although it seems like common sense.

thankyou brother so for the "what am I like to be around" do you think it is unprofessional to have a section that is just our strengths to be around? I do not want to be too relaxed in my resume, but also show who I am as a person.
It's all about how quality the product you produce, not that just the how much you do.
As pertain, Iam a photographer would like to send my photos to you to judge me am I capable enough to meet your requirements to suit this job.
    thankyou.

What about having a link to an online portfolio in your resume? I've never heard of actually embedding images into the resume before. Its odd though because I've applied to so many photography jobs, they ask to provide a portfolio link, and then I notice none of them actually view my portfolio and never contact me for an interview! :-/

Hi Lilly, good question... a link to an online portfolio is good however many people do this and I believe the biggest opportunity is in creating the best first impression. The easiest way to make a better first impression is to get images ( or video) in front of the eyes of the viewer asap. Even a really nice portrait of yourself that you feel good about and you feel captures your personality will go a long way in standing out. Imagine going to a company or shop or restaurant's website and there were no photos at all, just pages of words. What a missed opportunity for that business to stand out and appeal to the viewer. The same applies for resumes. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any more q's, happy to share my thoughts

Makes sense. I added a photo to the background of my resume that I think works well.

Hi Khalila, I think it's good to share any self-awareness you may have. For example if you thrive in a busy people environment with lots of conversations happening at the same time, say that. If you like a quiet space where you can think and do your best work, say that. Ideally you want to attract the perfect role that plays to your strengths so the more aware you are about that and the more you communicate that, the greater the chance of that perfect job finding you. Hope that helps :)
