We drove from Durango to Ouray, right before winter, a few years ago. There were a few rock slides. We were towing our Airstream. It was white knuckle. When we got down to the gas station in Ouray, my husband got out, patted the ground & said “never again”. 🙂
Thank you for newest video on Silverton drive.... I know it must have been a hard but gorgeous drive.....so do appreciate what you do for viewers.... I'm 75 and 90 % homebound....your videos make my days..... Thank you so very much.... May God keep you safe on the roads ahead....Denise
Awesome. I fell in love with this area so much that I built my vacation home outside Durango. Never run out of things to do. Best kept secret in the USA.
September 15 following is when the aspen groves turn golden. Awesome place. Road out of Cortez over Lizard Pass to Tellurid and down across to Ouray is some ride too. You would love. Ought to see Black Canyon near Montrose toward the east at Gunnison is something to see, also. 😊
WOW!!! Me and my parents really enjoyed watching every second of this drive! Russ...You should win an award for this one! AMAZING area. AMAZING video to say the least!🏆👍👍🏞️

Thank you so much Russ for your excellent videoes! Not only front, but now back views, as well as, drone! The added bonus is feeling like we are physically riding shotgun with you on all these adventures! Congrats on creating the best videoes on RUclips in my opinion. Keep on rolling…. 🎉
So well done, love it! Seven years ago I visited Silverton, Telluride, and Ouray. It was the first time seeing mountains in real life (50 years old). The Storyteller Indian store specializes in Navajo and Zuni sterling silver jewelry. Absolutely beautiful store and owners! Lots of wonderful stores. Surprised you did not go through the original jail museum site in Silverton. In Ouray (you - ray), there is a wonderful little hole in the wall cafe, Maggie's Kitchen, that makes awesome burgers and salads. So many wonderful jeep trails going up through the mountains. Engineer pass was breathtaking. If you have time, stop and see Animas Fork a preserved mining ghost town. Definitely one of the most beautiful places in the U.S.! Thank you for a wonderful video, it was good seeing it again!
I remember driving US550 from Durango to Silverton in a 1980 Mazda B2000 pickup. 5 speed manual and I was barely able to grind up those passes in 2nd gear doing about 20 mph. Thank you very much for bringing up some fond memories.
This really is a million dollar road with spectacular views. Your footage is really great esp the drone footage, and the back camera it was a nice edition. Thank you for sharing the journey. Safe travels.
Wow! Beautiful, but terrifying! With my fear of heights and the drop offs right at the roadway, my heart was in my throat. No way would I want to take that highway!
Man oh man! That stuff @ about 1:03 had me pouring with sweat just watching from home. You and all the other drivers who can make that stretch are legends in my book. Wow!
Pretty area of Colorado as you were driving you showed some views looking towards the passenger side would have loved to see more of the left and right side looking at the mountains thanks for taking us on the tour
Thanks Russ for the ride. Glad you got to see the Million Dollar Highway. I stopped driving down there a while back. It got to be scary. I'm from AZ and it was a bit much for me. Anyway, you had beautiful weather all the way. I stopped at the Red Mountain pass area where the mine is a few times and got great pictures of it. I'm in awe every time I drive through the San Juans. My favorite drive to AZ. I take 145 to Cortez now. Still very beautiful but not quite as high. I'm in the Montrose area and I hope you can stop at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It's sort of like the Grand Canyon but narrower and north and south rims are closer together. You will be impressed with it for sure. The Gunnison River runs way below the rims. There are a lot of view points too. My favorite is Sunset View and High Point. I can see it from my balcony. Thanks again.
This is an amazing, beautiful video. I am one of those people with a debilitating fear of heights. I could never drive that road without suffering a panic attack, and having to call a tow truck to get me back. Thanks to your video, I finally get to experience the ride. Thank you so much for posting this.
I’m right there with ya. I’m pouring with sweat in my living room now watching those straight drops. I’d have passed out riding shotgun with him. I’ve been where he’s headed next to Gunnison. It’s very nice, but thankfully I was never on a road like this one. Definitely something your brain has to get used to. Oh boy!
Did this very same trip a couple years ago. I missed the guard rails so my daughter enjoyed the scenery as I was watching the road. We pulled off at the same spot.
I'm so glad you finally got to take this drive. I've done it a few times myself. It's really interesting to drive it on a rainy day. Ouray is a fun little town. My friends and I would stop for lunch at the Ouray Brewery. We'd get a table up on the upper deck and enjoy a bird's eye view of Main Street while we enjoyed their delicious burgers. I've taken many photos of the town, and have shot some nice video footage there as well, until the day my camera battery died on me for good. Oh well. I suppose it gives me a good excuse to to back there again someday.
My wife and I made that trip last summer. Couldn’t of imagined having to pull the trailer as well because that Hwy is sketchy with drop offs and lack of guardrails.
What a scenic drive. Brings back so many memories of visiting Ouray in the 80's and 90's when I would visit a friend in Dolores, CO. We would drive up and stay in the Wiesbaden Hot Springs Hotel which had a vapor cave and a secluded soaking pool! They built the Hotel at the Mountain and enclosed the room to capture the hot water coming out of the spring with steam. A haunting experience. If you visit during the fall, the ride to the Dallas Divide is gorgeous. The camera on the back of the Van is a wonderful addition especially coming out of the tunnel! The locals of Ouray pronounce it: Yuray.
I really like the rear camera views. I bet it smelled like a Christmas tree farm up there. The section after silverton was incredible even on camera. Around every other corner, another kodak moment. They all looked like one of those old ads for beer, lol. You've added yet another bucket list destination for many folks I'm sure. Cheers again and thanks! 👍
I Take the Million Dollar Highway once a Year... actually just did it today!! 7/30/2023
One of your best yet Russ
The church and drive into Silverton is my favorite. Thanks for sharing
