I was around 10 years of age when family trips to the Gunnison River, about 1965. This was before the Blue Mesa. We stayed in an old one room cabin, next to river off an old railroad bed like a work camp. A big rock on a bend of the river, with a cable ferry to cross the river. The fishing was phenomenal. this is now ALL gone under the water of the Blue Mesa. I wish I could remember more of the beautiful place. Thank you for a trip down memory lane, stay safe
The Black Canyon, you just passed, is the Grand Canyon of Colo., it is simply breathtaking.. ! One mile down, sun doesnt reach it... hence the name... best attraction in.Colo.... at least put on Bucket list, Hutch
Wow Russ! This was one of your best videos! I loved Blue Mesa Lake and Gunnison Pioneer Museum! That museum was the best I’ve ever seen! That was truly one for the memory books is! Thank you so much!!!❤️😀🚙🤚🏿
I just want you say.I love your vids.they always bring a smile to my face. They are very well done.Thank you for sharing with us.I look forward to your next one..❤❤❤
Russ, thanks a bunch for introducing me to America!! I grew up in the Projects of the South Bronx and have never seen the places you have shown me over the years. After watching all those Beer Steins at the Gunnison Museum, I had to go to the fridge and twist off the tab of my 40 ounce bottle of Colt 45 Beer and have a few glasses with some Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese and Pepper Jack Cheese. What an inspiring Gunnison Museum that was!! Be well, Mr. Russ. And thanks again. Victor in Quincy, Ma.
Hi Russ, thank you for taking this trip. My husband and I live in Delta, CO just north of Montrose. Come see us. You can drive across the dam at Blue Mesa Reservoir and go to Crawford, CO to Hwy 92 and miss the road construction. It's a beautiful drive. I was second generation born and raised in Montrose. I have family in Gunnison. Please come to Delta:)
Wow, between the mural and the museum, what a nice little town.A good way to end the video with the beautiful river.I really enjoyed this video. Safe travels, Russ.
Thank you Russ 🙏🏻 I haven’t been well enough to travel/camp this year and your beautifully filmed videos really fill that void right now 😊 Do you leave your cameras up all the time? I would be nervous someone would steal them. PS that Gunnison mural was really nice 👍
Spent the last few days a Pa Co Chu Puk Colorado State Campground in Ridgway , Russ .Revisited Gunnison Park Thursday . Sorry we missed you. Heading for Grand Mesa tomorrow , Friday.
Wonderful visit to the Gunnison Museum. Wow they had just about everything a person could think of in that museum. Thank you for inviting your viewers along on the trip. Take care.
The one building you were in with the pictures with the men in their hats, it kind of reminds me of a skull and bones photo . they should update that picture. A lot of our past presidents are skull and bones. wow this one was really full of a lot of history wasn’t it?🤔 Thank you for taking me on this journey. It’s been really the best one of my life.❤❤❤❤💥
The traffic today is so much heavier than when I was a kid in the 70s. Most of the roads here and through the mountains are for 70s traffic. Seeing them being widened makes me happy.
I can understand not blasting the side of the mountain and destroying scenic value but there is barely enough room for a jogger, the white line, the trucker trailer, and the semi going the other way in most places. Something's got to be done about that.
About 2 weeks ago by Durango friend got his mirror clipped from a car coming the other way. I hope the state pays its road workers and traffic engineers well. Working through the mountains is a lot of work. It's dangerous working on foot in traffic.
Oh cool! At @42:07 there's an old metal Bread and Biscuit box. Bread on top and Biscuits on bottom! I have one similar to that one and it's the greatest keeper for them ever! Love the China sets in the next building, but dolls in that era gives me the heebeejeeby creeps. LOL
Beautiful museum, Russ, you could never have something like that in a big city they would steal things, damage them, or graffiti them. Thanks, for another great tour, Mike
Another fantastic video of your Colorado trip. My aunt and uncle lived in Gunnison years ago and it was his favorite place in Colorado. Now I know why he thought that way. I remember him talking about the museum and the small town atmosphere. You did a fine job putting this together. Thanks Russ! Safe driving and good health!
I drove this back in 2016 with my wife and son, was so tense from driving and watching the road that I really didn’t get to see as much as I wanted. Thank you for sharing your video with us and letting us relive the trip again!! Great job!!
We took the dam road when we went through due to the road work we had to. It was phenomenal, highlight of the trip that drive. View at the top simply incredible.
Great content! My dad introduced me to your channel after I told him about one I'm going to be starting soon and how our content could overlap. Keep it coming!
Wonderful scenic video Russ, and that treasure of a museum. The squeaky floor (42) did it for me... and the old cars too ... definitely took a step back in time.
Loved Montrose. We stayed at the same KOA . Black canyon of the Gunnison. Close to Your-ray ( not oo- ray). Highway 50 is a gorgeous ride to cross the rockies. Monarch Pass. Safe travels russ
Bunch of cool little western towns - google maps along hwys 92/132 at the blue mesa reservoir. Had no idea so many towns were hidden away up there. Very cool museum complex in video. I'd need a few hours for that one. Cheers - 👍
Nice ride along. Thanks for sharing. Love blue Mesa lake and Gunnison was a neat town and the bldgs packed with history that was just amazing. Safe travels.
My youngest daughter and I drove Hwy 50 and 160 seventeen years ago when we went cross country. It has grown since then but the scenery is still just as beautiful. We stopped along the Gunnison river and the thing I remember best was how wonderful the sage smelt.
The West Elk is a stunning drive. My Buick sedan made the drive just fine - I don't remember any dirt roads. Great camping too. You missed seeing the canyon - incredible. Worth a trip on its own.
ty russ vido so cool we used have old phone have dial number i rember those home movies camer's my dad mommy buy there first one when i was 2years old 1958 still got someplace i was born in jan18 1956 how old are you??
That bronze sculpture at the beginning of the cowboy trying to rope a mule deer looks similar to one in front of the Cabela's on I-35W north of Fort Worth, TX! These are stupendous videos! Been down through Montrose many times over the years headed south over the Million Dollar Highway or east through Gunnison over Monarch or North Cochetopa Pass. You'll just have to go over Lizardhead Pass out of Cortez Colorado someday. That's a very beautiful drive, especially in October! We hit that same construction last September going east to Gunnison. If we had known it was there, we would have gone another route. It was a MESS!
This was delightful! We have driven from Dolores to Taylor Park through Montrose and Gunnison many times and oh, my, how that town has grown! The airport supports large jets year round. We moved to Colorado 28 years ago and before that had flown from Corpus Christi, TX to go skiing at Crested Butte. We loved the area but decided on an area that didn’t get so cold during the winter…..until last winter😂…we had non-stop snow for 3 months! I hope you can continue down the Million Dollar Highway to visit Telluride and Dolores on your way back to Arizona. Happy Trails to you!
I like your videos. You get out of your vehicle and show us the sights to see. Too many Utubers film from the inside windshield with a 30 degree view right or left and the constant two yellow lines of the highway. Thanks for doing it right.
According to Wikipedia, they started construction of the dam in 1962, and it opened in 1966. It's 390 feet tall, and 785 feet wide. They had to relocate a cemetery to build it.
Wow you smooth through that road construction easily. I've been making that drive monthly for the last 40 years and have been dealing with this spot now for almost 4 years. Most times I end up waiting for about an hour. Usually the weekends are open. And then they alternate one way traffic every hour till the evening then it closes completely. Kind of funny to watch somebody else driving through there 🙂
Thanks Russ. Montrose is my town for now. I have stayed at that KOA in a cabin and was fun. Gunnison is a great place to visit especially the Pioneer Museum. I've never been to that museum but have traveled to Gunnison and on up to Crested Butte from there. Beautiful country. Actually the water at Blue Mesa got very low a few years ago but has started filling up some. The river that runs through Montrose, Uncompahgre actually empties into the Gunnison River in Delta CO north of Montrose and then joins the Colorado in Grand Junction. Nice drive except for the construction that's been going on for probably two years. Hopefully one day it will be done.

LOL Can't sit that long .... unless your moving!!! My last time in a movie theater was for "the Falcon and the Snowman" 1985!
Good timing, looking to do some hiking in black canyon in the near future. Nice preview.

Was up that way back in May. Snow on the ground and beautiful country

That corner with the Horse and Deer reminds me of the Winslow AZ. corner.

That rear camera is fantastic! Sometimes I think your driving backwards.
Must be a good restaurant to have people waiting! Hope you were able to try it!!😊

Beautiful architecture!! ❤❤
We just got home from Zion/Moab trip. Stopped in Grand Jct CO on our way home. Beautiful little spot. Safe travels.
Hello Russ 👋
Another awesome video thank you
Lived in Salida for a year in 81. Ever go there?
