- Nas dropped one of the most universally loved rap albums in 1994 with Illmatic.
Since releasing that homage to the gritty streets of his childhood home, Queensbridge, Nas has remained one of the greatest emcees of all time.
Few legends in hip-hop have been able to maintain their relevance over several decades based on their skill alone. Nas has never chased headlines or crossover success. He’s always seemed focused on elevating his craft and the culture. And that dedication has paid off.
King’s Disease is Nas’ 12th album, and earned him his 14th Grammy nomination. It’s up for Best Rap album at this year’s awards.
Rick Rubin connected with Nas recently to talk about his earliest experiences with rap in Queens, how recording his last album with Kanye West in Wyoming almost took him out of his zone, and how early beef with Jay-Z made them both stronger rappers.

I FEEL BLESSED TO BE ONE OF NAS INFLUENCES. Also To Be The First Hip hop Artist To Be Produced by Rick Rubin! Terry Pka T L A R O C K
💪🏾💪🏾
I Worked With Rick While He Was Still Attending College. NYU In The Borough Of Manhattan
Terry Williams. Mad props.
It's Yours! Salute 🫡
I have about 1000 records. The largest collection I have is from Nas. All his 12" singles, albums, bootlegs, white labels. One of the greatest to ever do it. Legendary.
@Aaron9 he means 12 inch records
Ditto
Can you post a list of the rare ones? I think I've heard them all but you never know. I love songs like Level 7 and Good Morning that are off the beaten path.
lol
He is the best period
best nas interview ever. rick rubin really has a way of talking with people that makes them open up
RIGHT?!?! I'm flippin out hearing this, like Nas does not normally opened up and he's so poised and articulate, very rare for a Nas interview it's a GREAT Interview
This is why Rubin gets such brilliant work from the artists he produces as well. He is a figure who provides a form of accepting comfort to express yourself. Many artists best records were with Rubin.
Love his Andre 3 stacks interview too
@@sdfasdfasdfasdf42 the andre interview was life changing to me no hyperbole. I learned to accept myself and that I'm not so alone and weird through relating to Andre's words.
He asks the right questions. Im so glad he asked him about ether lol. All other interviewers never touch on that question
So weird to hear Nas and Eminem tell these stories of their appreciation for hip-hop, like they're not living legends themselves. Always humble in every regard
Many came before them that paved the way. You should always remember those who helped shape your thinking, and give props whenever.
Nas rarely does interviews so obviously this is special.
“Play something that reminds you of me and my brother and our family when we were kids” beautiful! 🎷
Now that was a DOPE moment! A teenager Thinking on that level. GENUIS
Nas is a real hip hop nerd.....to bad the newer generation ain't deep in the history of hip hop
Well he literally grew up and witnessed the birth of the art form. These days the young kids are far removed from that time period. The earliest they might go back to is pac and big
@@ye23. Some of us definitely care about the roots. We just grew up in a time when rap was already a thing. I remember hearing 50 cent and lil wayne on the radio when I was growing up, Nobody ever taught us about dudes like fearless four or de la soul. All we knew was what we heard on the radio.
That’s because Nas is older and grew up with the history. He didn’t go any further back when he was 20 than any 20 year old rapper today. So in a sense you’re wrong
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 Through his Dad, the musician, he got schooled to more senior artists and other genres.
Facts and it truly shows very effortlessly. You can tell when someone loves their crafts for real.
Rick is such a great interviewer. Hands down the best Nas interview. He asks really good introspective questions and allows the artist to answer without interrupting. For all that Rick has accomplished he's managed to remain humble. Salute to these legends.
This interview could have been 3 hours long and I wouldn’t be bored
NaS is a gift to the culture! Protect this legend! Someone needs to do a dense interview with him where they go through each album all the way to King’s Disease
Funny how Nas kinda started interviewing Rick Rubin towards the end 😁
I like how Nas is quite open in his convos here. Very free
I’ve never heard him so relaxed.. ever
@@ghostshipone likewise he's very into this one.
Love that Nas still has the same respect for Rick Rubin regarding his musical contributions.
Nas being as great an mc as he is the love for the music as a fan is great to see. He's bridged so many generations with his lyricism without the push of a ton of hit records. The epitome of a true artist.
The GREATEST MC EVER!!!!
Rick knows how to ask the right questions and let the interviewees speak freely without interruping them.
NAS is definitely one of the greatest to ever pick a mic.
The nostalgia brings a tear to my eye. To quote KA, “I’ma Freshfest nigga you a Summer Jam”.
His process sounds similar to something I once heard Eric Clapton say. He said I’ve finally got to the stage where I can think it and play it simultaneously
And I thought Christmas had passed. Amazing interview, I could listen to Nas tell stories all day.
His mindset 🩵
I love how the last few minutes they flip and Nas starts interviewing Rick.
Nasir Jones the Great!
Yessssir!
Damn, 2 of the dopest hip-hop figures from different eras🙌🏾
Love both Rick and NaS......I appreciate the format...
No other artist in the industry is as good as Nas not because he is a pure lyrical genius but because he pays homage to those before him and always has. To me that what’s make him great. That he can sit at the top and still acknowledge those he surpassed! My opinion
you so right
This is so introspective💯👑🎯✨🌟💜🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
The GOAT 🐐
Going through rick rubins interviews. This one though is great. Nas is so well spoken ..respect.
Vlad and Fat Joe wish they could get a interview with Nas
Ahhh no way i was not expectin this
The True Goat
Great conversation. Nas seems a lot more open here then most interviews. Nothing fazes him but here, you can tell he's happy and excited. So cool
2 legends props to both.

Dope, wish it was longer but im grateful!
Dope content #PeaceKing ....Can’t help but think Hov gon see this then schedule an interview with Rubin soon,I mean that’s pretty much been the pattern with Hov/Esco anyway right🤷♂️

Love the show
Didn't know Nas had Nigerian ancestry, super cool
Two TOWERS of music legends. Cant wait to listen to this more in depth.
Great interview 🔥👏
I’m amazed Rick Rubin did ITS YOURZ. Every rapper that comes on his platform asks about that song. That’s still in my top songs ever made. I still get that chill when it comes on. Probably the first hip hop record that went deep in my soul
"A fight back then meant you were a sore loser"
...felt that. Excellent interview btw.
Excellent and thoughtful interview by Rubin. Nas is my favorite artist and he put me on to thing I ain’t even know. Well done, thanks!
Amazing interview with Nasir🙏🏽♥️
The Greatest in my book!!!!!
Stillmatic!
This was a Fantastic Interview!!!! NAS Is A LEGEND!!!
Great interview! Goat MC.
Loved it.
Illmaticether
The goat
THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!
Idk how I missed this
If you have ever listened to a Vlad interview and then listen to a Rick Rubin interview you will understand the meaning/feeling of a Culture Vulture. Big Up Rick Rubin for adding on to the culture.
Yes...no asking gotcha questions. No how can I make this black man incriminate himself. No trying to get more people killed over something they said in an interview. He actually respects the art and the artist.
That's low brow garbage
Vlad is a fool
good inteview
Hell yes.
Tampa Fl in this bih !!! God Emcee !!! Respect to Rick as well !!! Just saying
Paused the video to go listen to Olu's sax solo on Illmatic.

Salute to the god Nasir👑🐐
Rubin and nas, nearly an hour? Wheres the millions of views?
This was the most amped I've heard Nas. He sounds excited talking about his childhood.
Wish they would do video!
Apple Podcasts version of this one is waaay better with the music added to it, recommend it!!
Nas...GOAT Status.
When I saw the World Is Yours video in 93 I knew this was going to be the greatest rapper ever. Nas and my uncle's 2 friends inspired me to write and rap. Peace to Rakim who gave me the blueprint to writing rhymes by saying you got to have soul and let the rhythm hit'em.
Awesome interview! Ever gonna bring Yasiin Bey on here?
What’s going on LEGENDS!! 💯🙏
Nas and Banks colab would be dope Yo nas get at banks for that new york state of mind 2020 track.....

This is so ill
Milwaukee Native showing love to the god emcee. Peace to Nasiatic
King
The 🐐 none come close.
They blow jay up because he got more commercially successful music but when it comes to the craft, Nas reached a different level.
@@haloed-hero facts, and the media outlet tried to suffocate Nas in the process, he was giving the communities knowledge, and because he refused to sell his soul, that's why he hardly do interviews throughout his career.
Anybody got any info on the
" Illmatic MC's" nas was talking about?

The tone of his voice is so soothing. ❤️
His voice sound like someone with character, story, perspective

He is totally spooked out. Going to see the big man upstairs. Lol. Far cry from his early 5 percent lyrics
