I grew up a guitar player, but I always wanted a drum set all my life. I'm so into guitar that my wife and I named our son Gibson. Now that he's old enough to be into music and really ready to start playing something, does he want to play any of the 20 guitars I've gathered over the years? NO, he wants to play drums. And he's been saying it consistently for about 2 years now. At school of rock camp he gravitated towards the drums every time he went. so for the last year I've been saving and we should be able to order our set in like April. The point of the story is that the last month or two I've really been researching and have found your channel and it has REALLY helped me even know what I'm looking for, what sounds I like, and has kinda given me some direction, whereas before it was just banging around on my drummers kit at practice when he gets up and not knowing even what I like. Thanks man.

Awesome lesson! I totally find that when I play something really simple slowly, like a reggae groove, my creativity improves a lot. I improvise very simple, yet very effective, fills or interesting hi-hat work easily without having to think too much. I almost get into a meditaitve state. I usually try to busy my drumming with too many ghost notes or flashy fills (I am a student of Anika Nilles, what can I say?), but I am starting to learn that less is usually more in drumming. Some of my favorite fills are those super simple reggae fills. there is usually a lot of negative space and very few notes. Stewart Copeland was a genius of this type of playing. As long as you're in-time, it's easy to play around with the time too.

Reminds me of acting. You start by memorizing the lines and being able to play it the way you ought to/the way you're expected to. You haven't *really* learned the lines until you can play them with comfort and versatility; until you can respond to the scene partner and the dynamics that arise in actually playing it.

Just for the record, I'm right-handed, but I play the drums left-handed.

A musician I know says to practice until you can't play it wrong. That's quite the commitment to your instrument!

First of all, to clarify, I haven't been in a band for years. I just play along with songs on my drum room stereo. Maybe I'm just different, but when I play, I put my mind on hold. I don't think at all about what I'm doing, I just do it.. I'm no Buddy Rich by any stretch of the imagination, but it's the way I taught myself many moons ago when I first took up the drums.

My main problem, is that I don't have ideas in my head! 🤕

I find that if I paly really slow, deliberate grooves and almost get into a meditative state, where my muscle memory takes over and I'm not thinking about what I am playing, the ideas will naturally come out. I find myself starting to improvise really interesting stuff that I had never thought of before. Nothing too complicated or flashy, just simple nuances and fills that fit the music well.

Natural upload of ideas to the head happens by playing songs from diff artists and/or genres.

Yeah, he kept the stick heights fairly close to another ,but it looks like a left hand lead flam, L(r).

I see it now, it was a kick-flam. The kick is what piqued my interest @@dconvergadon5281
