You're right: King's storytelling is a hugely important part of his appeal. Just listening to the stories is part of the thrill.

Some good song choices there Darcy. I didn't realise King had so many releases that he featured on. Will make a good playlist this one. Yes hopefully we'll get a new album from him next year, long over due.
Great Video, and I agree with your choices. The Eye was my first King Diamond Album, I was 15 when it came out... blew me away, and still does. My favorite Album remains Abigail, and I particularly like Arrival and Mansion in Darkness.... great Songs, which really create an atmosphere.
Hoping for a new KD-Album (or Mercyful Fate, or both) soon!

Hi Darcy!!! cool to see your King Diamond collection again and sharing your favorite songs from each one....... i must confess back in the day i couldn't get into his vocals, but as time goes and you grow up, now i think they are really cool, lol...... that means i'm late to both parties and now have a lot of homework to complete. Some personal opinions (again based on what I've heard so far, I will definitely need to listen to the rest of the discography soon):
Abigail - "Arrival"
I love the way the King enunciates the lyrics on this one! Closely following are "Black Horsemen" and "The 7th Day of July 1777". Black Horsemen, a true masterpiece in the likes of Pantera's Cemetery Gates, or Metallica's "One" in my opinion.
Them - "Bye Bye Missy"
Something about that riff I just love, it's so Thrashy, Mikkey Dee's drumming is phenomenal (albeit not mixed too well as you mentioned, something seems off in general about the mix)... close follow-ups are "Welcome Home" now that I'm not terrified by it haha, and Accusation Chair.
Conspiracy - "At The Graves"
I just LOVE this song, from the creepy intro, to the "rise, rise, riiiiise!" chant when the music kicks in... Thrashy, unique, perfection. Close, close runner-ups are "Sleepless Nights" and "A Visit from the Dead". Upon re-listening too this album last night I'm loving it, heard it three times since just on repeat!
The Eye - "Father Picard"
This is the album that got me into the King, songs like the aforementioned Father Picard, but also "Behind These Walls" and "The Meetings"! The solos throughout are truly something special, and the keyboards as well.
The Graveyard - "Waiting"
I think this is my personal favorite King album, the storytelling, the guitar solos, riffage, drumming and vocals, everything. Songs like "Trick Or Treat" and "Black Hill Sanitarium" are some of King's best songs in my opinion, not just from the Graveyard, but in general.
Voodoo - "Voodoo"
I love a good Dimebag Darrell solo, and this is just another fun track in general. The "voodoo... voodoo" chant is easy to sing along with (despite not being a good singer at all lol), and also the story aspects, and tribal (voodoo) drumming. Other tracks such as "Cross Of Baron Samedi" and "A Secret" are killer as well.
Final note aside about the Dark Sides EP, it's mostly consisting of bonus tracks, and I believe some were hidden tracks on the LPs, for example "Phone Call" is hidden at the end of the Them album, whereas Shrine was an Abigail bonus track!
Great video here as well! Just subscribed, and cannot wait for the new King album... 17 years almost since his last, it's insane to think about how that's being just a few years short of my lifespan. Haha
Can't argue with your song choices! The first 5 albums are hard to pick from! Spiders Lullaby is so underrated!! Also love Voodoo and The Puppet Master!!

I preordered Masquerade of Madness on vinyl from indiemerch a couple days ago. The bone colored version was already sold out but the other one isn't or wasn't when I ordered. Also, I bought a bootleg picture disc of Masquerade of Madness on vinyl from Italy back in 2019. They only made five copies, I think mine is #4 I don't remember. The vinyl itself reminds me of a Fisher Price record, it's very unique, I'm not entirely sure if it's actually a vinyl record but man, it's neat. Side one is the studio version the band recorded and side two is the band playing it live somewhere in Europe perhaps, I'm not sure where but the live version sounds so damn crisp and clear and it actually sounds nearly identical to how they sounded in Dallas when I got to finally see King Diamond play for the first time live.
Really looking forward to a full-length album. It's been ages.
Funny thing is I still had grey (metal) hair in 2007 🤣

Great choices Darcy! Hard to pic favourites from the first four albums, as they all are packed with masterpieces. By the way, I think there were a few great albums released in 2007, Inner Sanctum by Saxon and Gambling with the devil by Helloween are two of them I think. Take care!🤘

Great video Darcy. I only have the first 5 King Diamond albums. Gonna have to revisit those. Been a while. The only Mercyful Fate album I have is Don't Break The Oath which i only picked this summer. I think i need time to properly digest KD's vocals. Cheers 🤘 🍻.
King’s vocals are not for everyone I understand, but if you look at it like he’s just another instrument it makes better sense! Try The Spider’s Lullabye or The Puppet Master, both worth your time! Thanks as always 🤘 Cheers Speedy
Love KD and MF! I think the Spider's Lullabye is great and gets overlooked because of the time period it came out in. I hope we finally get some new King material next year!

As you probably already know my first and still my favourite KD is Conspiracy but everything up to The Eye imo is such quality. I need to spend more time with what comes after that though 🤘I used to have a copy of Abigail II but like you it didn’t impress me so I sold it for a tidy profit.

King Diamond, one of the greats. My favorite tracks are almost the same than Yours. But Mercyful Fate is always one step higher than the King Diamond band. Saw MF on the last tour in 2022, still great, unfortunately without Michael Denner, what is a pity. Waiting for both bands new albums in 2024! Wait for your album of the year show, despite that I have to say that 2023 was not a good year for metal, only 5 albums made an 8/10 or better for me.

I have recently completed my King Diamond collection, although most of the albums have been with me for years there were a few that I haven’t heard. The Spiders Lullaby and House of God were 2 of those. I agree, TSL is totally underrated. If I were to rank the albums that one would probably be in my Top 5.
Definitely a Top 5-6 King Diamond album, 1993 to 1995 is a great period for King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, In The Shadows & Time are must have albums! Hope you’re doing good my friend 🤘
I loved your King Diamond impressions :) I like all his albums pretty much equally. I have a hard time indentifying those dips in quality that people say characterize albums like 'The Eye', 'Voodoo', 'Abigail II', and 'Give Me Your Soul... Please'. I saw King Diamond live performing 'Abigail' (I think it was) in its entirety. It was after he had recovered from his heart surgery and had stopped smoking and improved his health. It was a fantastic show. I also got to see Mercyful Fate live back in the early 90s supporting Metallica on a one-off occasion in Næstved, Denmark; they completely blew Metallica out of the water.
I believe the so called dips in quality has so much to do with timing, I (whoever) just hasn’t had enough experience with a certain album, if that makes any sense lol. Thanks as always for watching & chatting Metal with me 🤘 Have a great week :))

I really need more King Diamond in my CD collection. I only have Abigail Live so far. The problem is that i like to buy used or find at thrift stores and no one wants to sell or donate thier King Diamond lol. Motorhead has the same problem.

I find it crazy how bands in the 70s and 80s pumped out albums each year (King Diamond, Sabbath and Van Halen come to mind) and the albums were all amazing. Now you’ve got these bands that release albums every 2-4 years or more in between albums and they’re garbage, or half filler and a few good songs.
Also random question, you mentioned your sons and when they were born, do they listen to metal music?
I often think about the days when bands were pumping out an album every year, still blows me away! Yes both my boys like Metal, but not on the level their dad does lol. Have a great week Andrew 🤘

I discovered KD when I saw the "Family Ghost" video on TV in ´87. I instantly fell in love, it´s still my fave KD song of all time.. The new 12" maxi single is so damn unnecessary, just a cash grab, something nobody really needs. It comes with a stupid mask and the two live tracks are not really a sales point either! Way too expensive on top! ....I pre-ordered it the day it was annonced, hahaha.... I´m looking so forward to hold it in my hands! Did I ever mention that record collectors are dumb? Hahahaha.....

The first three King Diamond albums are fantastic, especially Abigail. It's been so long since the last album, I'm really losing interest now.
That last album in 2007 was horrible. If we ever see a new album it better be incredible.
