I've done this naturally since I've started.. 10 years ago. I actually injured my shoulder trying to elevate the shoulders overhead in catching of the Snatch. Listening to ur body and what comes natural. Great video
Thanks for this, Zack. I love that you share all your approaches with clear and concise explanation. This makes a ton of sense and you see these kinds of misses everywhere! I look forward to trying this out
Zach this video was exactly what I needed. I'd been doing the Shaman Raindance overhead squats the Crossfit coaches showed me and wondered why I was terrible at them. The "head through" cue has immediately improved my position 10 fold and weights I struggled with I am now repping out.
Absolute gold. I recall your earlier video on using bottom-up for developing mobility--thanks for reemphasizing that. And thanks for generously posting your advice. Your last video on starting position was a world-changer for me (being a fellow giraffe).
a weightlifting coach once tried to correct me this issue but with the push and split jerk, he explained it to me the same way as you mentioned, yet his point was more toward engaging the upper back as a support instead of putting all the weight on the shoulders, At the same time now in this video I see the center of gravity point which makes total sense Thanks for the explanation, Great video!!
Awesome tips Zack! This is definitely something I'm more aware of and know that pushing my head through at the catch has improved my snatch heaps. It's cool to understand the theory behind it though!
Gabriel while training under him changed my head position and elbows a bit and lockout changed drastically. little things matter. thank you for putting awesome information.
This is actually wild… I messed up my shoulder catching a snatch [poorly] the other day… And you guessed it! I was doing EXACTLY what you’re talking about in the second half of the vid. Thanks a bunch for the awesome vid, time to go practice!
Super useful thank you! Edit: I really like your video tutorials because I have longer limbs relative to my torso and I find that my positioning ends up being similar to yours. It’s a useful technical model!
Not too many WL guide videos mention head positioning as it is usually considered as an issue of an athlete's body proportion or style. Great one! I'll try out these ques.
Okay I haven't done snatch in 6 months listened to this video the day it came out. Broke my snatch pr by 20lbs without even using a belt! I can now snatch more than my bodyweight, thank you!!!
Hey Zack, please could you consider making a video about your technique change? Like your technique from a few years back and now is different, now the clean seems a bit snappy, how did you incorporate that? Like you already were a experienced lifter so i assumed your technique was mostly set but the bar contact changed very drastically
@@TheHothead101 oh i see, i remember seeing that video and his other vid about torokthy bar contact too, i simply wanted his to make a "how to get snappy" vid :p
Does moving the head forward increase how much you can snatch by acting as a counterweight to the overhead bar and keeping you more balanced, or by allowing your shoulders to be in a more advantageous position to support the bar overhead?
I just came back from a terrible snatch session (just under 3 months since I’ve started), where my coach identified my head had gone through too far forward causing me to miss (both backwards and forwards). Yet if I’m understanding this video correctly my chin being tucked and head slightly angled forward is good for creating stability? I’m a little bit confused, can someone help explain?
I'm struggling to get heavier because of what feels like muscle strain in the front of my hips, not a hip impingement, maybe hip flexors but they aren't tight. It's doing my head in!
My coach (USSR) always said missing behind in competition was shameful. Weight was dropped in front due to lack of strength only, but this was for seasoned lifters only. Crossfit competitors seem good now in snatch.
Hey Zack, what resources would you recommend to someone who wants to start learning and training the Olympic lifts? I've only ever done strength training and powerlifting up until now (though my total is currently only 885). And does oly lifting have carryover into other sports like kickboxing and Jiujitsu? I'd think so, since you're training explosiveness and type 1 muscle fibers.
I did this a few hours ago and GREAT ADVICE but I bailed out like in the video and ended up hitting my lower back with the bar . Any tips on bailing safely?
I am always being bothered by my teacher for pulling my head down and I feel like that is holding me back, I even feel like I am compensating when squating, that means when going up my head moves and my arms tries to fall back... why does she keep saying to me not to pull down my head? I feel stronger in this position and I am kind of afraid to confront her, because she is more experienced in weightlifting than me... I also see that almost every lifter pull his head down, I don't get it pls help me! should I swap my teacher? xD
I understand the idea here, but you’re saying the difficulty of getting out of that bottom plate position come from your head not being pushed out. The difficulty is from your ankles not being factored into the equation. Your sitting tall on those plates with your feet forward, then when you switch up your head positioning and shoulder position you are also sitting forward to engage your ankles. Being in the bottom of a squat with zero ankle flexion is near impossible to get out of regardless of the bar being overhead, front rack, or just air squatting
@@robschilke My girlfriend bought me a pair of Romaleo 4, last month, I think they're great, was just wondering if they were classed as good. Not restarted my jerk training as my squat went to shit during covid so I'm building that back up first. Thanks for the reply 👍🏽
Unreal that we have literally hours and hours of incredible training advice and guidance from this guy - thanks zack!

All these years I still miss forward this way. Time to really practice missing behind.
Heading into a snatch and clean and jerk cycle. Will definitely be adding this and keeping all of this in mind. Thanks Zack.

Thanks zack, always God tier tips, tutorial, drills etc

Amazing video - this feels like a big realisation for me - I just realised I’ve never before missed a snatch behind 😅

How close does the bar path come to your nose on the ascent? Wow, I have struggled here so much.
In between watching you troll Riptoe, how would I go about you reviewing my snatch form, and how I might improve it 💪
nice, thanks
Hey Zack, Do you maintain a hook grip in your catch?
Unrelated comment but you remind me of a long lost twin of David harbour who weightlifts, a fit Jim hopper, stranger lifts 😉🤙💪
Snatch balance help with head position too?

Just to be clear, eyes always stay forward? Even when you're pushing your head forward and down?
Yes. Don't look down or too far up. Just keep em forward.
