The Biggest Question of his History: Did he get shot down by a Canadian Pilot or a Australian Machine Gun???
Nobody knows, if you're getting paid minimum wage to shoot at guys you've never seen before who can't speak your language you don't really care enough about the other person's identity
Skittles McNeill my mate who works at the Australian war memorial says it was a Australian machine gun fire that got him
if you look at the circumstances surrounding his death he broke many of his own rules by going off on his own and chasing deep into enemy territory...... Almost as if he wanted to get shot down.... But that's just food for thought
Skittles McNeill great question....
I heard that this plane had engine trouble and he got to low to the ground so everyone started shooting with everything artily, machine guns, people on the ground but the shot that would have killed him came from an Aussie ( THIS IS WHAT I HEARD )
He was in the cavalry not the infantry... research is key to these projects. Thank you for making these films.
Pd Flem The pilot he was chasing when he died was also Canadian. The video states he was British
Tim Brown Canadians were part of the British empire
@@cv4809 Canada was an autonomous dominion or commonwealth, it was not annexed by the British Empire.
Hence the reason his rank was Rittmeister, ie riding master.
The Red Baron was chasing a Canadian pilot not a Brit (Flew for the RAF but none the less still Canadian) and who shot him down is still debated by some... The RAF officially credited Canadian pilot Roy Brown with shooting him down but many modern historians believe he was actually shot down by an Australian named Cedric Popkin (from ground fire as you mentioned in the video).
Devil's Advocate
He was apparently shot down by an inexperienced pilot from historian
@@zachmontanari3521 No Brown was an experienced pilot . He was trying to help May ,an inexperienced canadian pilot .But the red baron was certainly shot down by an australian machine gunner .
Richthofen died from a .303 caliber bullet.... so what does that tell you?
Crazy the fact that the plane got hit by a lee enfield bullet and then suddenly crashed.

False. He did not record his fame as the Red Baron by flying a Fokker triplane. He recorded most of his kills in an albatross D. III I believe which was also painted red. It wasn't until towards the end of his career he flew the Fokker
Most people dont know that sadlt. His most "famous aircraft was the one he flew the shortest and had the least amount of victories with.
Cade smith Agreed. The Dr.1 is what most people associate with the Baron, but he only scored his last 17 or so victories with it. He scored most of his 80 kills using the Albatross D.III Painted red of course!
I agree with you Cade Smith
He only flew the Fokker because many RAF planes made another version of the Fokker and had to switch but he was killed in a Fokker on his first couple of flights with it

Legend has it that after receiving what would be the fatal injury, he managed to land his plane safely and hang on to life long enough for allied forces to reach his position, at which point he uttered his final word: Kaput.
“Curse you, Red Baron!”
-Snoopy
I’ve been subscribed to this channel since around early 2018 and just now discovered this video
Actually he was shot at by a British pilot, but he lived too long after that shot for it to have been the fatal shot.
He always told his trainees to never fly over enemy lines, but on his final day he did just that. He was fired on by the English pilot but continued for some time, being shot at twice more from the ground.
After being shot at the second time from the ground he landed behind enemy lines, shut down his engine and said "Kaput!" to the solders who had come to capture him and died.
An autopsy was performed and a bullet was found consistent with the anti-aircraft guns used by both fighters and ground troops. He was given a full funeral with all the honors BY HIS ENEMY.
It was assumed that it was the fighter who scored the fatal hit, but a modern examination of the autopsy notes (which were very detailed) showed that the bullet that killed him would have caused a person in very good physical condition to bleed to death in just a couple of minutes. Far longer than he flew after the first and even second time he was shot at. It was the third time that was the fatal shot.
I thought it was an Australian soldier that shot him down.

Unfortunately, this is a bit inaccurate. Richthofen served as a Ulan (cavalrymen) in the Ulanen-Regiment Kaiser Alexander III von Rußland Nr.1 on the Russian front. He did however, operate as an infantryman often times because of trench warfare. He wore an uhlan tschapka as a cavalryman not an infantry Pickelhaube (spiked helmet).

Fun fact : in WWI, Germany was counting kill reported by the pilot, anywhere, whereas french pilots could only counts verified kills, by other people, which means if a french pilot was gunning down a german aircraft over ennemy territory, he could not be verified, and thus was not counted.
That red Baron man was a true badass in the air
this channel has grown so much
He had previously taken a bullet to the head but continued flying missions. The wound may well have altered his personality as he was reported to have become more irritable and act irrationally, extending to his flying habits. It is my belief that the brain damage he suffered was responsible for his poor decision to fly low and in range of AA machine gun fire.
The most underwhelming simple history I have seen. This man is a legend.

Check out "The Red Baron" by Peter Kildruf. It contains Manfreds personal writings from "the red battle flyer." Journals, letters, and letters written by his two other brothers. Illustration, and photos. It's really the go to book on this subject.

"I bet i can shoot it down with a bullet"

I love how just a few seconds ago, there was uplifting music with the guy talking about his heroic actions, then it immediately shifts to his death.
His last words wore kaput which means broken in german.
Roy Brown shot down the Red baron but some people say that he was shot by an Aussie machine gunner but I think Roy Brown shot him down cuz he was even credited
Quick question how did the guns work on the biplane there like right in front of the propeller
They used synchronization gear first used by the German Airforce in 1915. Before that it was pretty much firing revolvers and throwing bricks!
there was a loose rod on springs that would barely touch the propeller, it wouldn't let the gun fire if the propeller was in the way. German engineering. other nations just simply added a second seat and had a designated pilot and a gunner
Actually it was Anthony Fokker, a Dutchman working in Germany at the time, who invented the mechanic.
That would be quite interesting to watch, with the bricks I mean.
Geckos4days there is mechanism that fires bullets when the propeler passes

Infantry? you right mate? I'm pretty sure he was radio operator. but before that was cavalry
In fact, the video starts badly: piloting a plane required a great deal of preparation and was consequently a prestigious role; at that time there were no real aviation schools, so the armies involved in the conflict only selected graduates and in particular those who had studied at the military academy. Manfred had studied at the academy and knew how to ride a horse exactly as the aces of other nations did
. Evidently, in the rush to write the video, the information was hastily revised (Manfred's father had served in the infantry, perhaps the information overlapped?).
Wasnt he killed travelling back to an airstrip while to refuel when an untrained (and not very smart) British soldier took a lucky shot at him.
The Soldier was Australian, for one. And Richthofen was shot chasing and skirmishing with Canadian pilot Arthur Roy Brown.
JacksonJosephJ Productions Must explain it, I remember briefly my history teacher telling me.
+Greencolt most experts now believe that the Red Baron was killed by Australian machine gunner Cedric Popkin who definitely was not untrained who was operating an aa gun and is confirmed that the baron was killed from the ground and not by the Canadian pilot.
DJ cheezeburger But BEFORE that, the baron was skirmishing with a Canadian pilot. I might not have made that too clear. Regardless, Roy Brown was given credit for shooting him down. I have no doubts that Mr. Popkin shot down the Red baron.
i was just expanding on what you were saying because greencolt asked
