  • We gear up for the 2021 US Open with the first and only installment of the USO Power Rankings. Find out if anyone tops Novak Djokovic, who leads the NowGen between Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, and where players like Jannik Sinner, Denis Shapovalov and Pablo Carreno Busta land. In the second leg of the show, Gill breaks down Zverev's new and improved shot, which has helped him to 11 straight victories. And since it's always mental with Zverev, his mindset heading into New York is also covered at length.

You mistakenly said Djokovic has won 2 of his 7 US Open finals. He has actually won 3 of his 8 US Open finals. Here's the list:
    2007 - Finalist - lost to Federer
    2010 - Finalist - lost to Nadal
    2011 - Champion - defeated Nadal
    2012 - Finalist - lost to Murray
    2013 - Finalist - lost to Nadal
    2015 - Champion - defeated Federer
    2016 - Finalist - lost to Wawrinka
    2018 - Champion - defeated del Potro

Just thought I'd add some interesting tidbits abt some of them off the top of my head, for context/fun.
2010: Saved match points vs Fed, 5 sets
2011: Saved match points vs Fed, 5 sets
2012: Very windy, Murray's first slam
2013: 5 sets vs Wawrinka in the semi Nadal beat Gasquet 3-0 in the other semi. Nadal also won Canada and Cincinnati this year.
2015: Federer had quite a few opportunities to break but didn't convert
2016: Had a few walkovers/retirements, very odd match vs Monfils in the semis, also somewhat injured. Last grand slam final until Wimbledon 2018.
2018: Millman beat Federer, Nadal retired with a knee injury vs del Potro in the semis.
These are not to cheapen or exaggerate his results, it's just some trivia of a few noteworthy things I remember happening.

This is why Djokovic's losses at the Olympics matter. Other players feel that they can defeat him and several know that they can. This combined with his poor decision to skip both Toronto and Cincinnati, the fact that he has a 3-5 finals record at the USO, and several other reasons, make me believe he is vulnerable at the USO - yes, he may win, but he also may not win!

    1. Djokovic
    - Who else could it be? He has won the last three grand slams and will be going into this well-rested. Hard courts are his best surface. He has the early rounds to play himself into form.
    2. Medvedev
    - This is one of Medvedevs favorite surfaces and he excels on hard. He made the finals of the 2019 USO and 2021 AO. Moreover, he just won the Roger's cup. If not for an untimely crash into a camera, he likely would have won Cincinnatti. I don't see anybody outside of Djokovic beating the Russian if he is in good form.
    3. Zverev
    - He has been on a recent tear, winning the Olympics and Cincinnatti. He has been scary good in best of three tournaments. The question remains if he can do it in a best of five format.
    4. Tsitsipas
    - He made the AO semis, French Open finals and the Cincinnati semis. He is a great talent. The question remains if he can get his head together in the big matches.

Something I've been wondering on Hubi: do you think he'd do well to get more aggressive and try to hit fast winners more often (not like Shapo, but looking for the opportunity a bit more). Though, you point out something that I guess I noticed but not so specifically - he plays an odd game. His rather unique mix of baseline rallies + cutting to the net with cool, calm, long strides makes it hard to play him and hard to forecast how he'll do. Same for his returns, where he can seemingly reach a lot with those wings but is inconsistent on where he returns the ball - sometimes in ridiculous corners with the touch of a fairy, sometimes out or into the net. Think this is a key reason I like watching him so much. His game is different, has odd elements. Also, watching him vs. Medvedev is a total blast. So similar, but obviously not entirely.

Gill great job. I was thinking Zverev would be #2, I have to agree #3, he had Rublev giving up and had a very bad service game serving for the championship in Cincinnati. That certainly reminded me broken Zverev is still in there, but he's very close to dominating.
I saw Novak in 2014 and 2015 FO circum to the pressure in the finals, both slams I think he should have won, if he was mentally the giant he is at AO or WO.
That being said, he's the best at making up for a dud performance, 2020 US Open was a dud.
Novak has been showing the world for 10 years, he belongs with the greats of the game. Winning the Calender Year Grand Slam on 3 surfaces and in the era of the Big 3...GOAT undisputed KO.

I’m tired of reading comments about Tsitsipas being coached in the bathroom. This is a stunt from Zverev to get the crowd behind him and to cause issues for Tsitsipas. There is no proof that he did that. Everyone gets on their phones during intervals and breaks. That doesn’t mean their cheating. But I agree that these long bathroom breaks need to stop. It isn’t doing him any favours with the spectators and media. But he wasn’t the only one doing it. If he needs to take a break then make it quick and get back under 5 minutes. As for my predictions, I have Tsitsipas in 3rd, Medvedev 2nd and Djokovic winning. As for Zverev, he was luck winning the match against Tsitsipas. Late in the 3rd set, Tsitsipas loss his 1st serve and Zverev was able to come back. If they face each other again in a 5 setter, Tsitsipas will probably take revenge.

Thanks Gill, Do think the recency bias will play out in a good way in this USO-21. I think he will be tested and will reach down and rise to the occassion. As far as how well and long he can do this for especially given the Thursday TBD draw results, that remains to be seen. I think Sasha could very well up his mindset game this USO-21. Assuming that the USO-21 draw is based on 1-Nole; 2-Danil; 3-Stefanos & 4-Sasha, then most likely Danil & Sasha would meet before either faced Nole and I don't think that Stefanos can take out a healthy, motivated and focused Nole. But, that's 8-10 days away. Again thanks Gill! Well done:) Best, Milan

I am in full agreeance regarding Medvedev's weaknesses and getting frustrated and how he too quickly deteriorates in the face of adversity at times. I wondered the same thing too about his match against Bublik; the break maybe saved him there? I also fully agree regarding Rublev and what he must do to go deeper in majors. You made your case against Zverev and a fair amount of it hinges on the loss at Wimbledon. But grass is his worst surface at this point in his career and he lacks needed experience on it. The serving woes have looked out the window for a while now and I think it's the case he is a much more clutch player at this point. Plus I have a feeling that he has faced down some things in his personal life and that has made a difference as well. I think your off base on Zverev, but I thought you made some great points on the others.

Novak Djokovic had his wooden cross on his chest, and Alexander Zverev had two hanging things. I do not think Djokovic will be in the final. I would need to know the draw, if Zverev is in Medvedev's draw and Tsitsipas is not in their draw then I think Tsitsipas will be in the final.

Gill may have watched it, but he is downplaying it for some reason, and I guess does not understand how much Novak wanted Gold. Zverev's performance in Tokyo was strictly top shelf. Let's put this out there to Gill : total majors in career for Zverev vs. Sinner. Seems like Gill is taking Sinner over the course of their careers. It looks to me like Zverev could be winning a bunch and I think I'd take him.

Gill, I don't think it's fair to Reblev to blame the camera accident for Medvedev's loss. I seem to remember that when you were discussing the Cincinnati semi-finals, you totally wrote Rublev off. So now you can blame the camera, even though Medvedev wasn't even injured.

Tsitsipas is slowly becoming a disappointment of tennis. He was coached once again and even was texting with his dad on Zverev. Rightfully, Sascha saw that and complained to the umpire. Luckily for Zverev, he pulled himself through and won the match. Tsitsipas really needs to grow up.

I mean, had it been for Daniil or Novak they would have served out the match and Zverev before even realizing that he would be out of the tournament. I have to disagree with Zverev being third. The power rankings near the top should be which player has the best chance to beat Djokovic. And it’s Zverev all day long having a better chance to beat Djokovic than Medvedev. Djokovic can dictate against Medvedev and wear him down. Zverev has a more powerful forehand than Medvedev, especially when you look at his 11 match winning streak he is on. I don’t see Tsitsipas even making the last 4. Medvedev and Djokovic would way rather get Tsitsipas on their side of the draw instead of Zverev. Murray had a whole new level of confidence when he won the Olympics in 2012 and I’m really think the same is happening with Zverev. And Zverev was 2 points away from winning a major and serving for the match as well. Medvedev technically hasn’t been as close to winning a major.

    • @Daniel-od6ft
      @Daniel-od6ft 3 года назад +3

You make a compelling argument for switching Zverev and Medvedev but there are some good reasons for Medvedev to be ahead of Zverev. Firstly, Zverev has never beaten a top 10 player at a Grand Slam. That shows that he hasn't been able to play his best tennis against the top players at Grand Slams. In contrast, Medvedev has beaten 3 top 10 players at a Grand Slam, including 2 at this year's AO. Medvedev has proven that he can play his best tennis in BO5 against his rivals, but Zverev hasn't. Secondly, Medvedev has a better H2H against Djokovic than Zverev does. Medvedev trails his H2H with Djokovic 3-5 (38% win percentage vs. Djokovic), while Zverev trails his H2H with Djokovic 3-6 (33% win percentage vs. Djokovic). This contradicts your claim that Zverev has a better chance of beating Djokovic. Lastly, Zverev loves playing as the underdog so his 11-match winning streak and the hype around him may actually hurt him more than it will help him. He just hasn't yet shown the ability to play his best tennis under pressure in BO5. Maybe this will be the moment all that changes, but I'll believe it when I see it with Zverev.

@@Daniel-od6ft it’s my opinion, just like Gill has his opinion. And if we’re going by head to head against Djokovic at majors then Tsitsipas has done by far the best by taking both matches to 5 sets, which Zverev or Medvedev have never done. Zverev was closer to taking Djokovic to a 5th set than Medvedev at a major. I’m throwing the top 10 stat out the window and going with my gut on this one and not statistics. There is a look about Zverev that I’ve never seen before. It’s as simple as that for me. It would be great if Gill is right, because I want to see history. I want Djokovic to win all 4 slams this year. I just don’t fear Medvedev the way I do Zverev. Statistics and numbers are important but they don’t tell the whole story. Players that can defend and are good from the baseline are able to get to Medvedevs legs. And more players are trying it now. It’s not a coincidence that Dimitrov completely changed how he played to do this against Medvedev. He just didn’t play well enough in the end. Rublev also played more patiently as well so he could do this. PCB also did a good job of this at the Olympics. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Medvedev gets worn down in these slower hotter conditions and doesn’t make it to the final. I understand what Gill is saying about not wanting to have go just by what’s been happening lately. But for top players there is always a turning point where something clicks, something changes. And if I really didn’t feel this was what happened with Zverev because of the Olympics, I would pick Medvedev as number 2 as well.

Here is my thinking about Djokovic: the fact that he hasn't played at all since his losses in Tokyo will be his downfall and he won't make it to the USO final. Arrogance, the pressure and over-confidence have done him in from time to time and will so again at the USO this year. I am boldly predicting he will not make it to the final and Medvedev will win the USO this year.
