    I respect that Gill has always been ready to heap tons of praise onto Alcaraz, even back before he won a slam. I remember heading into the US Open Gill said he would only dial it back if 2024 comes around and Alcaraz hasn’t won a slam. It shows a great appreciation for the “eye test” that a lot of tennis fans do not have anymore. It’s always about accomplishments.
    Too many annoying “Alcaraz does not have 20+ grand slams so don’t praise him” takes. He’s 20 years old and more accomplished than nearly every player ever at his age. I’ve also seen the eye test fail people when they wonder why Thiem received so much praise despite “only” winning one slam and one M1000. You just had to be there.

      Interesting. I’ve found that the Masters that get the most praise tend to be Indian Wells, Miami, Rome, maybe Madrid. Particularly IW and Rome from what I’ve seen. Shanghai is a nice change of pace though.

      IW has been tournament of the year since 2014. Miami used to be top-tier and now is middle table event. Rome is pretty good while Madrid has received a lot of complaints from players. Perspectives to a tournament can be quite different from players and inspectors and people watching on TV. @@SJ-di5zu

    • @got2bjosh
      @got2bjosh Год назад +1

      @@SJ-di5zu IW is considered the 5th Slam due to its large stadium size (only USO is larger) & it is the most attended tennis event outside of the Slams. IW, Miami, & Shanghai have the largest purses of the Masters, so they're highly prized. IW is also harder to play due to altitude. Miami occurs right after which makes it extremely difficult for players to win both. They're both physically taxing for different reasons. You sort of have to choose which one you want to win (IW or Miami) in a given year. Shanghai is the largest event of the Asian Swing. Rome is a very old tournament, almost 100 yrs old, but Canada & Cincinnati are the oldest Masters. Madrid is newer & has had its fair share on controversies (racism, surface woes), so I doubt anyone would put it ahead of the others.

    Id be curious to hear what Federer was missing in his game at 20 yo. Or even Nadal for that matter. We were talking about who has all the shots and Carlos is cited (yet again) as the exemplar. Federer had so many shots he created a bunch no-one else could do.
    Nadal could do all the standard shots too, I believe. It's just he preferred to play a certain way. His big thing was "I keep it simple" so he didnt need to come to the net with his fh blasting passing shots from the back, but he could always volley, even if he didnt have Fed's variety of volleying skills, till much later. Federer thought dropshots were a cheap shot initially, but he changed his mind early enough, and for the dropshot that dies the sudden death, there is still no-one to beat him, and his side-spinner, while not a unique twist, was still a spectacular winner. I dont think Carlitos' dropshots even come close to Federer's. It's just eveyone is so far back he can pop them out ad nauseum.

    Sinner will definitely win a grand slam very soon. It somewhat surprising that he has made only one semi final in a grand slam and ie. Wimbledon. He has the verve, resilience and potential to win big titles

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu Год назад +1

      I’m not worried about Sinner’s grand slam play. It took Zverev like 4 years in the top 10 before he even started playing at a good level at the grand slams. From 2016-19 he just had a ton of disappointing losses and never made the SF even once. In 2020-21 he improved a lot, but still didn’t even get his first top 10 win until 2022 RG.
      So at least Sinner has outperformed that so far. I think he just needs to work on his durability in best of 5 a bit, and the rest will come naturally. Get an opportune draw, probably want to avoid Djokovic although if he keeps improving maybe he could steal a win over him, and maybe win a 50/50 match over Alcaraz.

      That may be so. But a player who is into the serve and volley tactic is simply cheating in tennis. Yet Sinner used it too many times in his counterfeit China Open victory a few days ago over Medvedev. Without it, Medvedev would have defeated Sinner. Serve and volley simply constrains the opponent and is essentially a cowardly cliche point in tennis because it violates the honourable principle that you work out the points you win on your own and apply what you need to do correctly in order to earn the success. Serve and run to the net to volley is theft! It is NOT an earned point.

    Far from current topic however, can you please bring this up on next show.
    For some reason , when media brings up Goat conversation lately, its always Djokovic stats compared to :
    Margaret
    Serena
    Navratilova
    Graf.
    And thats fine, how ever its seems that no one ver talks about Monika Seles.
    By the time she was 20 she had 9 grand slams.
    French open at winner at 16.
    Dont forget, she was 20 years old when the stabbing incident by Stefi Graf fan happened. After that she was never the same. But she is never in Goat conversation. Why???? Media will make a catastrophe case when Djok hit lines lady with a ball, but take a look at coverage of knife stabbing of Seles. Stefi Graf went on to win multiple Majors afterwards and was profiting from Seles inability to mentally recover.
    There are movies about Williams sisters and how hard it was for them but there is no Movie about 20 year old Yugoslavian who was raised in war torn country and whos carrer pretty much ended when she was stabbed.
    Also, its interesting that both Monika Seles and Novak where discovered by the same tennis coach Jelena Gencic when they were 5 years old.

When a 16 year old wins French Open and has 9 Majors by the time shes 20. Come on. She has not even developed fully physically or mentally when she got stabbed. She could never trully recover . If you even looked at 2022 Spain I think they had a fighting chance. You had Nadal who was still a force and won 2 GS, breakout Alcaraz who finished #1 in the world, PCB who won a Masters in 2022, RBA, ADF. Their doubles would’ve been super solid too; I think Nadal+Alcaraz are elite doubles players which Russia lacks. 2022 Spain wasn’t quite prime Spain like when they had prime Nadal, Ferrer, Lopez (for doubles), Robredo and all, but it was a solid team .
    If 2022 Spain played Russia, I’d favor them. Of course, a lot has changed in the last year. Obviously Nadal’s sudden decline, plus PCB and RBA seriously fell off. ADF hasn’t really improved either.
    USA could feasibly beat Russia only if there’s a lot of emphasis on doubles. Russia doesn’t have many good doubles players whereas USA is full of them. In singles they’d get wiped out though. Similar to Laver Cup really.

He has the stability and flexibility of Novak, he has more power than Novak in his groundstrokes, his return of serve is becoming an elite one, his volleys and drop shots are not yet developed just as Novaks in his earlier years, the serve is getting better, just as Novak was, and he is mentally tough, he just needs to improve his physicality and movement and if he continues to improve at the rate he is improving and stay healthy, we could soon have a winning machine in Janic Sinner. only time will tell.
