  • 2019 Taylormade M5 vs 2017 Taylormade M1... Should You Upgrade?! The Taylormade M5 and Taylormade M6 have taken over from the Taylormade M3 and Taylormade M4, which took over from the revolutionary Taylormade M1 and Taylormade M2... but if you have the M1... is it worth upgrading to the pretty expensive M5? How much better is the M5 than the M1? Does it hit longer drives? Maybe it will hit more fairways with its speed injected twist face? Rory Mcilroy, Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson all use the Taylormade M5... but that doesn’t really mean a lot. Should you spend more money on a new driver and expensive golf clubs? Or should you find a second hand M1 and save your money? Let’s find out... and let’s do it now!

I think what tests like this show is: If you already have a driver which is within a few years old, you're not missing out on anything.

I agree, James. I went from a R9 Supertri to a M1 and noticed a gain in distance. Sadly, my M1 had a bad paint job and I got a M3 as a replacement. I didn't notice a difference between the M1 and M3. Both are terrific clubs.

@@ra1279 Just got it yesterday and didn't get a chance to play or hit balls. I'm going to the range later today and see if there is a difference and I'll play 9 tomorrow. From just swinging it at my house I'm sure there will be a difference. If you put the R9 Supertri next to the M5 there is a BIG difference in shape and size.

Hi James! I have actually run a similar test myself as I currently game the 2017 M1 440 and found the same results when I tested the M5. I love my M1 and unless something comes out that dramatically out performs what I have in the bag, I see no reason to spend that big money. Although I must say, my previous driver was an SLDR that performed brilliantly and I purchased the M1 based on the aesthetics and muted sound. Keep up the great content James!

Enjoying the content over across the big pond in the U.S.. Keep it up. I have yet to find more ball speed in the last 5 years of drivers. I know that some days I can get 140 ball speed out of a driver and go back the next day and get 138. You’ll never see 3 yards on a course. There’s so many other uncontrollable things on the course that it won’t matter. Keep the M1 and use the money on lessons. That’s how to get better at golf.

I have the m1 2017. It is by far the straightest driver I have ever used. I have tested the m3 and couldn’t get on with it at all. I had to shorten the shaft and put both weights to the back. This changed everything. I feel I lost a little distance by doing this but gained so much accuracy. Since doing this I have had 3 of my mates doing the exact same. My bad shots used to be so far right. Now they just fade a little. I agree they peaked with the m1. No need for all this technology. If the wife wouldn’t divorce me the m1 would sleep at the side of me after a good round. 👍🏼👍🏼

There are a few things I liked about the video. 1, You kept the shaft and changed out the head, This is a big cost factor, If I`ve been through a fitting and I`m performing extremely well with my shafts changing out the head will save big $$$$. 2, You proved to me that all manufacturers are doing is just giving there drivers and woods pretty paint jobs. 13.5 degrees of your is the same 13.5 degrees today.

I'm not a big fan of these so-called "apples to apples" comparisons. I would much rather see a properly fit M1 vs a properly fit M5. One thing I noticed was that clubhead speed was about 1.5 MPH less with M5, may have to do with the physical weight of the 2 heads being different. I just believe that testing these two clubs and not taking advantage of all the customization features is doing them a dis-service. (It also helps that smash factor with M1 was near 1.50, because part of the idea behind the new face is to make sure that ALL the clubs TM releases are more consistently in that range)

I was fitted for the M2 and really liked it. We tested the M6 in the studio when it came out and I really appreciated to feel off the face and loved the style however didn’t get too much further than the M2. HOWEVER I’ve been using the M6 on the course for the last few weeks and my confidence has grown dramatically with the club and I’m really striking the ball well, so well in fact I’m easily hitting 30yds further with it. The twist face has given a significant improvement in dispersion and miss hit results.
I would expect similar results for other manufacturer comparisons, on the course.

Brilliant video James! I’m in the same boat as you, I have an M1 and I really like it, I really didn’t think there could be that much improvement to the M5. Using your car model analogy, the car companies do the same thing - every 10 years or so they introduce a new model which is really great, then they update it (mostly aesthetics) every few years...but basically it’s the same thing...

I bought a new 2017 M1 on ebay last September when I started playing golf again. Brand name, old reviews, and a 55% discount off original MSRP did it for me. I'm a senior and my driver club head speed only averages 86-87mph so as long as I can put it out there 200+ yards and hit 60%+ fairways I see no reason to change.

James, I have an M1 and was wondering about the difference between the M1 and M5 because of the twist face and the marketing that the new model would go further. However, you are the only one that has done a comparison on the two, so thank you! I am not going to spend all the extra money for what appears to be very little difference. I suspected that with the adjustability of the M1 the difference between it and the later models should not be that great. Thank you, this helped me very much.

James I did this test 2 weeks ago. I was playing a 2017 M1 with a Hzrdus Yellow. Made the switch to M5 with a tour AD GP. I gained 12 yards through greater optimization.
I can help you explain what was happening between M1 and M5. I’m assuming you took the Hzrdus Smoke out of the M5 and put it in the M1.
That’s a problem because the stock length of the M1 is 45.5; the M5 is 45.75. That means the M1 head is heavier than the M5. So when you put the .5” longer shaft in the M1 the swing weight goes up 3 points!
So you are most likely timing the mass better when built at a heavier weight. That’s what happened to me during my fitting. Had to add a bit of weight to M5 to optimize it.
But in the end my average strikes with M5 were as fast, as my best with M1. And my best shots with M5 went further and faster.

ive got an M1 with 6.0 Hzrdus yellow, wasnt really fitted for me, so this is the conundrum, as i reckon a good fitting with a 65x something shaft and a fitting in an M5 would give me some better consistency as a 3 hcper??!!

My strange perception and results is that smaller heads like the 440 has much more solid feel and is easy to square. Your tee height looks higher than optimal.
That may be the difference between the clubs. Try the M5 with a tee height that puts the top of the club face at the equator of the ball or slightly lower.
That would seem to correct for high face strikes on the M5.

TaylorMade did peak with the 2017 M1 driver. In my opinion they took a few steps backwards with the M3, and again with the M5. I have not hit the M5, but I was able to test the M3 against the 2017 M1 a while back when I was considering an upgrade. I found no improvement with the M3. In fact, I found the M1 more consistent and easier to hit. Unlike you, I found the sound of the M3 a bit tinny outdoors. Your experience with the M5 pretty much mirrors my experience with the M3 and helped me to conclude that there is no reason to spend the money on a new M3 or M5 driver that seem to offer minimal or no advancement. It would be one thing if my driver was 10 years old and I was in the market for newer technology, but the new bells and whistles offered by the M3/M5 lines do not overshadow what appears to be the best driver TaylorMade has ever produced. I think the M1 will be in my bag for some time to come.

106mph club head speed with the M1 for 157.8mph ball speed vs 104mph for the m5 for 156.6mph
I'd argue the ~2mph difference in club head speed for ~1mph slower ball speed would probably mean the m5 has a higher ball speed if club head speeds were equal.

great video James the price of new golf clubs is borderline unaffordable now days ill be sticking to my Taylormade m4 its just as good as any other club out there in my opinion. The real question is have golf companies gone too far with there pricing ? and is golf slowly becoming a rich mans sport ?

mike jazz interesting thinking. I have a friend who works closely with TM. He said the prices are driven by the decline in sales. People are realizing that a new driver isn’t performing better than the previous year or years models. Now they are charging twice as much because they will sell twice as less.

I had M1 & M2, now gaming TS3. Love both M1 & M2, was looking at M3 but not convinced with the twist face. Hit slightly farther with the new TS3. Maybe I should go buy a discount priced M1 as a spare driver......🤔🤔🤔

Would like to know if the M1 head is heavier as it feels heavier than my M4. Is using the same shaft the right fit if heads are different weight?

I've got the M2 2017 driver and I tried the M6 and I still think the M2 2017 is better for me crown seems to have a nice shine on it as performance £400 for a m6 driver doesn't weigh up for me when you still get near enough the same performance has the M2 2017 I feel that they made the M2 too good seems to me there just played about with a slight of the design and the cosmetic work for me you can get an M2 for a fraction of the price for almost the same performance as the m6

My experience exactly. And I don't make good contact with the M5. I swing the M5 TERRIBLY. Something about the balance of the head.

IMO if you have a driver from the past 2 years the only new driver worth upgrading to is the Cobra. that's it

I upgraded from an R15 to a M3. Still trying to get used to the sound of the M3. Sometimes I feel like I need earplugs! Has anybody else noticed this?

great video this is exactly the video i wanted to see, i went from the 17 M1 to the M5 ( i won the m5) but was going to be buying it anyways. really surprised you like the look of the M1 more, the M5 at address is so good, especially with the matte crown. when i went and did a fitting the m5 was wayyyyy better for me in every way, tight dispersion and a lot more distance (over a 20 yard gain) but the better fit shaft was likely a big reason. also noticed you left the weights in standard postition, move them around for better spin and launch ? great review as always !
