You know I saw the movie first on accident and absolutely loved it. I didn’t know there was an anime nor a manga until I watched your video, so thanks for this.
I was the same way though I think I saw the 2008 anime years ago but I didn’t remember anything about it. After I watched the movie I thought it was a really cool premise and saw few manga volumes of it at my local bookstore. I read the first volume and loved it then I started watching the 2019 show an so far I’m on episode 18 and I’m really impressed with it so far. I just don’t want it to end.
The manga is far better. However, the film is very good. Just because I prefer the comic book version doesn't mean I'll sit there and trash talk the movie. It's not like Crying Freeman or The Last Airbender where it was like WHY?! Probably my biggest beef with the live action are 2 things- 1) lack of humor found in the comic books and 2) lack of depth to the characters that forced you to love them and feel invested in them, even some of those who are labeled antagonist (in the comics, very few are completely good and completely evil).
You certainly undertook a massive project, here, Spooks, and having seen a big chunk of the process I can say it's worth every day you invested in it. Mdq is happy of how it ended up

It's criminal that this video didn't get the views and attention it deserves. Maybe because of the video length? I also loved the Blade of Immortal to death, it being one of the 1st series that got me into manga. Good job in analyzing this great series, pity you were not able to discuss the last remnants and moments of the Itto Ryu as a whole since it wasn't included in the movie. For how horrible the group is with their morals, their principle as warriors is something to admire and behold.

I never got far past the part Maki was in prison being experimented on but watched all the anime & movie adaptations & only got the manga's final ending now. You sir, are a legend & a gentleman of impeccable connoisseurship in your both your presentation & take of the multiple versions of this almost incomparable masterpiece of an original story. Anime's never covered enough of it & Takashi's movie slightly dissapointed my expectations in exactly the ways you so expertly & eloquently expressed. Everything you said about the adaptations is spot fucking on. The movie and 2019 anime series are not bad, BUT this manga series deserves so much better, period. I usually have the 2019 anime series on in the background while I edit video. One side of me really likes it, while the other is so depressed about it lol!! Eh, it is what it is. I started to read/buy this manga about... 17 years ago (damn), but sadly in France the first editor to pick up the story didn't translate the entire manga, so I had to wait for a very long time to read further than the prison/immortality experiments arc... *Berserk* is still my favorite manga of all times, but *Blade of the Immortal* is a good runner up. I love the movie (I'm a big Takashi Miike fanboy, have been since I was a young teen, so I might be biased), and I didn't hate the first anime... but I had such high expectations for the 2019 one that I felt really let down by the terrible pacing. For a movie it's excusable, for an anime it's harder to overlook. Still better than the sacrileges that were Berserk 2016 & 2017 anime adaptations... when I think that I used to believe that the Golden Age movie trilogy was terrible, compared to the newer adaptations it was actually pretty good.
This was an exceptional video, I only had the 2019 anime to go off of and although I suppose it's more consistent with the manga then the original anime's version. I just kinda thought it was boring, I don't know if it was the characters or what but I didn't find it very interesting. But with that said holy hell dude you have such passion for this series I hate that I can't share in your absolute love concerning comparing and contrasting and in general talking about this series. I look forward to more videos like this in the future!

I want to say that don't worry about the people who don't have seen this video/your work because there will be many people like me who would come and appreciate for your work. I have seen this movie almost 9 months ago in the covid lockdown period where I was attracted by the name of the movie because I knew there was an anime on amazon prime for it which I haven't seen and the IMDB score I think was pretty good that I read its summary and after little positive thoughts I made to watch the movie and I liked it. I feel if we watch the live action movies before their original source we can appreciate and love it more after getting interested in the story and that will lead us to watch every source possible to know more about the story. I haven't seen Blade of the immortal's other sources probably I will check it out in future at sometime , I'm pretty satisfied by your comparison and review for your movie rating. (I know this may take a LONG time to make and edit but I think it’s a good idea, and maybe you could find a way to find a photo of someone’s OC through social media.) My OC’s name is Akane Akiyama. Here’s my OC’s quirk information: •Quirk name: Camouflaging Sent •Quirk abilities: Her quirk leaves off a camouflaging smell that blinds people’s brains to alarm the person that she’s not a threat. Here is an example of how Akane’s quirk works: Let’s say Akane has to sneak in one of the FBI’s secret offices to complete a mission. By using her quirk anyone who saw her would think that she was a random citizen who was just walking around. She can use her quirk for up to 30 minutes. If she physically touches someone and keeps eye contact with them for 10 seconds she is able to track wherever they are for only for 25mins. For example: She keeps eye contact with one of the villains for 10 seconds and touches them. A day passes (or even more time) and she is still able to track them down, but as I mentioned before ONLY for 25 mins. •Quirk special attack: She can affect others with her quirk by touching them for 10 seconds, but that depends if she wants too. By doing that she will also give them a “camouflaging sent” for only 20 mins. I'm surprised to hear that this series is underrated because back when I was reading the manga, it was hailed as one of the best seinen series ever written. This is on my top-tier list of seinen manga along with Vagabond, Vinland Saga, and Berserk. I guess it's not as well-known in the west, huh? But in Asia, where I'm from, this is pretty popular among seinen manga readers. I agree, the movie is decent and I liked it, but not nearly as good as the manga. I was actually surprised that Kimura Takuya was able to portray Manji pretty well as he is an ex-idol and a generally more mainstream type of actor. I wasn't so convinced with Fukushi Sota's portrayal of Anotsu, though. But I did like him as Ichigo in the Bleach live action.
Thanks for making this. I was watching the Amazon anime version and being confused. Over 200 manga chapters "condensed" into just 24 episodes explains it.
I got into the the franchise via the new anime and I think it was fine with pacing at least for me. But I did eventually dropped it and binged the manga instead. Shame the sequel aont by the author tho, still I gave it a read it’s meh. I personally liked the live action film the best out of the bunch solely cause of the ending being more to my liking. So when I saw this in my sub box I was like aye I just watched/read that. Love the work bud keep it up! I get ya wanna keep ya projects on this channel to ur style and I support it. Having another editor for a second channel is definitely wise for the subs wanting to see ya work more regularly.

Unfortunately Takashi Miike had to face something really difficult: to adapt a 20 years running manga in a 140 minutes movie. And that's more than impossible Many characters are shadows of the original (Makie, Shira or Machi are nothing here...) and thousand subplots don't exist. But Miike has some kind of magic touch, he makes the show extravagant but not ridiculous, the duels have the essence of the classic ken-geki movies and the chemistry between Takuya Kimura and Hana Sugisaki is good (though I think Fumi Nikaido or Hikari Kajiwara could have been better options for the character of Rin...).
I've only read through the first 3 or 4 omnibus collections but it is incredible so far. Ambiguity, nuance, violence, emotion, just general intensity. The "gathering of the heros" sort of segment at the sea shore is one of my favorite string of chapters
I googled good sword fighting anime and the anime for this came up. It's only one season so now I HAVE to read the manga. Especially after watching this.

I came across this when I was searching for something to watch on Amazon lol. This was pretty good except for a few episodes that bored me to the point of skipping past that scene but overall I did enjoy the series and hope they make a season 2 that would taken place 100 or 200 years later. That would be interesting to see
It skipped so much of the manga that it was just rushed and shit also the animation was a bit meh I liked the voice acting I want a proper adaptation that fully adapts the manga but I want the guy who voiced manji In 2019 to stay his voice suits the character
I dunno. This Manga is just so good that I don't know if an equal quality live action is possible. Maybe if it summarized many of the things that kinda drag on in the manga to tell the whole story but keep to the key scenes? Hard act to follow.

If she physically touches someone and keeps eye contact with them for 10 seconds she is able to track wherever they are for only for 25mins. For example: She keeps eye contact with one of the villains for 10 seconds and touches them. A day passes (or even more time) and she is still able to track them down, but as I mentioned before ONLY for 25 mins.
•Quirk special attack: She can affect others with her quirk by touching them for 10 seconds, but that depends if she wants too. By doing that she will also give them a “camouflaging sent” for only 20 mins. If the person she decided to give her camouflaging sent to someone else, and that someone else is touching somebody else they can also pass the power to them too.
•Quirk drawback: If she overuses her quirk(uses it for more then 30 minutes), she starts to feel dizzy and blackout.

I'm surprised to hear that this series is underrated because back when I was reading the manga, it was hailed as one of the best seinen series ever written. This is on my top-tier list of seinen manga along with Vagabond, Vinland Saga, and Berserk. I guess it's not as well-known in the west, huh? But in Asia, where I'm from, this is pretty popular among seinen manga readers. I agree, the movie is decent and I liked it, but not nearly as good as the manga. I was actually surprised that Kimura Takuya was able to portray Manji pretty well as he is an ex-idol and a generally more mainstream type of actor. I wasn't so convinced with Fukushi Sota's portrayal of Anotsu, though. But I did like him as Ichigo in the Bleach live action.

I got into the the franchise via the new anime and I think it was fine with pacing at least for me. But I did eventually dropped it and binged the manga instead. Shame the sequel aont by the author tho, still I gave it a read it’s meh. I personally liked the live action film the best out of the bunch solely cause of the ending being more to my liking.

Unfortunately Takashi Miike had to face something really difficult: to adapt a 20 years running manga in a 140 minutes movie. And that's more than impossible
Many characters are shadows of the original (Makie, Shira or Machi are nothing here...) and thousand subplots don't exist. But Miike has some kind of magic touch, he makes the show extravagant but not ridiculous, the duels have the essence of the classic ken-geki movies and the chemistry between Takuya Kimura and Hana Sugisaki is good (though I think Fumi Nikaido or Hikari Kajiwara could have been better options for the character of Rin...).

I've only read through the first 3 or 4 omnibus collections but it is incredible so far. Ambiguity, nuance, violence, emotion, just general intensity. The "gathering of the heros" sort of segment at the sea shore is one of my favorite string of chapters

I came across this when I was searching for something to watch on Amazon lol. This was pretty good except for a few episodes that bored me to the point of skipping past that scene but overall I did enjoy the series and hope they make a season 2 that would taken place 100 or 200 years later.
