When Leslie says before he started singing, “Where is Vestal when I need her.” He is referring to Vestal Goodman. Vestal was the matriarch in the gospel group called The Happy Goodmans. It consisted of Vestal, her husband and their 2 sons.
Vestal had fantastic voice. Vestal passed away in 2003. The Happy Goodmans had been one of the pioneers of gospel music. They had been a touring gospel group for about 50 years.
I think Leslie was calling on Vestal to help him get through that gospel song. Let’s face it, Leslie didn’t have the strongest voice. However, no one could sing those old gospel songs like he could. He reminded me of how I heard those songs sung when I was a kid. I just loved listening to him sing those old time gospel tunes. Reminded me of home.
The Happy Goodmens were actually Vestal, her husband Harold & his 2 brothers, Rusty & Sam. She was an absolute powerhouse!

Rest In Peace Leslie, you made us laugh during a horrible time during the pandemic. You made us feel less alone. Your talent was impressive. Now you are singing for all of heaven and chatting up the angels and making them laugh. This was really well done. It made me sad hearing it, though, Leslie actually had a really good voice. Doesn’t surprise me as I bet he was taken to church and sang in the choir down in the south, that’s part of tradition. I hope as he came through the gates of heaven and saw all the angels they were singing this and he gave them a big smile and said “well, I’ll be.” 💔
I had this song played at my youngest daughter s funeral when they was taking her out, because someday we will understand it all. Right now I don't understand it. My precious daughter was struck down at 39 with a massive heart attack. The pain of losing a child is like none other. I have to ask the LORD daily for strength to go on. GLORY TO HIS NAME ❤

On that day your precious daughter will show you how beautifully, wonderful Heaven is. You’ll THEN understand why! My heart breaks for you and I can truly understand your hurt and grieving. I love Chris Stapleton's voice. I used to listen to him when I was getting drunk and and high on speed. The Lord Jesus has kept me clean and sober for almost 5 years. Thank You so much Lord Jesus!!!!!!!!! I love hearing Chris sing about Jesus and would love to hear him sing more gospel music. Especially with Morgane, her voice is amazing. Hope to hear more from ya'll soon.

R.I.P. Words can't express how saddened I am at the loss of such an inredible soul. 😥 Leslie was a good role model to me. I really looked up to him. I loved his joy and passion for life and God. I aspire to have that fire within me. This song, as well as the others on his gospel album were played costantly in my home by myself and my family. It helped us get through dark times, and draw nearer towards the Lord. In a world of phony and shallow people, ( both celebs and not), Leslie was authentic, and there will never be anyone like him again. I've never met him, but I feel like I've lost a dear friend. 😔 Rest in peace and in paradise with Jesus. God bless you, legend! 🙏✝

I came upon Leslie a few months ago. I was in a very very dark place. His joy for and in life was transcendental. I’m trying to stay sober, and I have decided that since Leslie was such a light (and sober) and we both love sweet tea and cornbread, I have made him my understanding of a higher power.

I have always loved hymns done in the correct tempo, style and harmony.
I have loved Leslie since I saw him for the first time on Designing Women and Chris and Morgane Stapleton are pure genius. To be honest, I would have never envisioned the Stapletons backing up Leslie singing gospel. It works, though, like a charm!

I suffer in severe pain daily but HATE taking medications for it....its not ours to question why but I have to admit that lately I've been weak in that department. Had listened to Leslie's audio book on drive to memorial service in Wisconsin (we live in east Tennessee now 😉). Sure appreciated insight, honesty & realness of his story.
This morning seemed extra pretty & doesn't seem fair that our loved ones aren't here to share it with....this beautiful song came to my attention.
Haven't heard it in years (yes, we have Baptist churches in Wisconsin). But listening brought back the comfort I remember as a child.
