The "handle" on the full sized notebook is very useful for holding the notebook in your non-dominant hand and writing. That is, if you're standing, or otherwise don't have a desk, and need to write something. Slip your hand through to hold the open notebook. I believe this is more the point than a "carry handle."
@@NickShabazz I think I've seen a few wanted pictures posted in lobbies across the nation displaying two hands and a delica. Be careful out there. If you're caught you'll be Nixed Shabann'd... Eh? Eh? Ok...
I've got the small Lochby notebook and I've had it for probably 9 months now. I like it quite a bit, I got in to journaling and didn't want to buy little amazon basics notebooks anymore so I got the Lochby. I have a pair of pens, a 6" machinists scale, a Sharpie, and a small compass. It's been great I've had oil and grease on it because I have it on the shop floor as well as the office. It's been durable and great the only real downside is every time I go to buy replacement notebooks they are always out of lined variety of paper refills.
I always love when Nick leaves his usual terf and reviews something unusual like the nut sack or notebooks like the ones seen here. Keep up the good work Nick, really enjoying your work :)
You're correct that Quattro is for pen geeks. Fountain pen folk who want to carry a few differently sized nibs or differently ground nibs like a stub and architect will find it useful.
I really like the pocket journal. I use it as my wallet. The external pockets are great once broken in(I used five zebra 701 and left them in the front pockets for about a Week).
I ordered this bundle and so far, I kept the tool roll, the Quattro, and the small notebook cover. I find the tool roll the most useful to me. Love the review!
That was a great review Nick. I am a fountain pen user and I just bought several of their products during their Black Friday sale. I don’t know if they are still running the sale today. If I hadn’t already bought what I did, I would have after watching your review. You are the real gem of the EDC community. Please keep up the good work. We all appreciate you.
With the pocket journal, you can put 2 books in, the cover slips in that pocket on the left side cover, as well as the back cover pocket, pens slip into the pen pockets on the front cover. The second layer of pockets on the leftsided cover are business cards. It is a great notebook for professionals and trades people on the move. The A5 journal is a folio and traveller notebook all in one. I can fit 3-4 A5 inserts aswell as a notebook (cover slipped into the back pocket as folio), it can handle a lot. You can keep your whole life in that A5 cover, I love it.
Oh man, I'm really looking for something like this because my whole life-planning and day-to-day-organizing is completely offline and none-digital. But these products here are definitely not what I need. But I love that people are developing products to serve people like me. Keep going maybe someday someone will get it right. The Tool Roll seems to be the most useful here.
Don't knock your perspective on items such as this. I dabble as a stationary nerd and your observation about the pen in the spine was a bit of a game changer re: the pocket journal. I really appreciate how you approach your reviews (down to the tiniest details). Also, your comments section is super helpful. Please continue to experiment with the channel and branch out on review items.
These are really for pen folks (think more fountain pens). The larger loops in the tool roll are for larger diameter pens (some get pretty girthy). The shallow pockets are practical for pen cartridges, nibs, ink cloths, micro-mesh, etc. The color also works, for ease of seeing things. Analog writing is making a comeback of sorts. There is something very satisfying seeing one actually write (very personal) than relying the digital world reducing individuality.
Just to play contrary here, as a songwriter I prefer to not have perforated notebooks. I carry a small journal in my back pocket everywhere I go and I actually switched to Rite in the Rain pocket notebooks because my old notebooks had perforated pages that would constantly fall out. The downside of course is that a waterproof pen is required to write in them because the paper is coated in wax, but it's extremely tough to tear and it won't fall apart when wet.
Depending on the pens you use, deep carry or no clips are better in the Quatro. Great for the hobby knife tho. If these were water resistant these would be nearly perfect.
For all the writers and "stationary nerds" out there, please do a review on some great pens UNDER $50. Maybe some gentleman-style knives in the same price range? The super classy bolt actions you have are very shiny but most of us are never going to spend $100+ on a single pen. Help us find those diamonds in the rough?
Check out offerings by Machine Era, for pens. Nick has spoken a great deal about those, and they have a few models under the $50 range. As far as “gentleman-style” knives… best advise from my perspective, would be to go to a retailer site, sort all offerings by price, and scroll until you find something you think you like, then come back to RUclips and check for reviews. The problem with the term “gentleman”, is that, it isn’t particularly a category that means the same thing to everyone. Find something that looks attractive to you, within your budget, and do a little bit of research, chances are that you’ll find what you’re after.
I picked up a titanium Twosun pen on eBay for $15! I must’ve gotten pretty lucky, and I wouldn’t had bid more than $20 on it at the time, but now that I own it, and knowing what I know about it, I wouldn’t had thought twice about paying $35-$40 for it. Iike it a lot, it’s so smooth, comfortable etc. and I was never into pens before owning this one.
What are the actual dimensions of the refills! It's not on the website and I was hoping a review would include that. Are they interchangeable with Cahiers?
The Pocket Notebook refills are 3.5"x5.5", so they're the same size as Field Notes and there are Cahiers and plenty of other notebooks that come in that size. The Field Notebook refills are A5 size, which is also another common size so you can find plenty of potential refills.
They all look nice but all missing some basic essentials. The field journal and pocket journal lack internal pen holders. Seems like a big shortfall. The pockets they do provide are odd sizes. It's a shame. Hopefully v2.0 items in the future.
We have similar taste in watches. Have you looked into the German brand Sinn? Quality and up to date technology at a great price. Domasko is another good German brand but Sinn hold value like a Rolex.
Must say that I spent some time looking for a portable, (pocketable?), notebook cover not too long ago. And for some completely inexplicable reason, nobody seems to be able to handle a PEN properly with their notebook. Most had nothing, some put them in the completely wrong place, some used "expendable" stretchy loops. You would think it would be an important part of the design process...but, nope.
I like the notebook but your right about it. It's just like the leather notebooks I already have with chinsey pen holders I don't trust. it needs to hold pens internally with a hard surface that goes over them so it doesn't affect my writing. Then maybe I'd pay 50 us for one.
I've gotten their ads and have visited their website. They need a more pocketable item. Their most pocketable organizer for a pocket notebook would NOT fit in my front pocket. Maybe a cargo pocket.
@@nicks8026 I don't disagree. The tool roll and field notebook are much more compelling than the other two, and even then, some of the design considerations are not perfect. But I would certainly classify them a bit above dollar store items, which was my main point. Nice review as always.
The internal color does make visibility very good.
Yeah, you just gotta wait for someone else to find it and open it first. But then you'll be able to see it from space.
As an artist the Tool Roll looks really attractive option.
That's what I was thinking

Lol! Great video yet again Nick. Very interesting gear .
The quattro could be useful for lock sports ( lock picking) rakes, hooks, tensioners etc.
Great video!
For pocket notebook, small pen like big idea push button small. again pry bar. small deep carry clipped knife
I can't believe Lochby or anyone else for that matter, wouldn't put a full zip around zipper on the largest journal they sell. JEEZ! Blows my mind:)
Multiple thin notebooks could be good for freelance contractors. Especially if a client expects to receive your notes at the end of a project.
I literally just saw an ad on Instagram of this. Then, I got a notification for this review!
