I don’t think his attitude was defensive. I think it was more that he didn’t see his financial situation through Dave’s eyes. He thought his problem was the interest rate, while Dave is looking at the whole numbers. The caller likely thought it was the high interest rate that was beating him up, not the high note on the other vehicle. For those of us that understand Dave’s plan, his situation is plain and obvious. The caller was not yet understanding what Dave was saying. Many of us have done silly things like the caller. Be patient with him, he’s taken the first step to get his financial life back together.

Even then making 100k in some states is pretty tight. In NJ for instance, uncle sam can take a pretty penny out of your check. 100k can easily turn into $70-$75k, which equates to about ~$6000 a month. If a fifth of your income goes to car payments and 25-30% goes to a mortgage, you're only left with $3300 and that's not including utilities, cable/internet, car insurance, food, and cell phone service/payments.

In colder climates where AWD/4WD is good to have, (so you can get to your job...) they are good little cars that get you from point A to point B without costing an arm and a leg. Most of these pickup truck guys should have settled for a little AWD suv if they need to get around in the snow, and just a normal/cheap 2wd car if winter isn't a concern. 6 years ago I put $7500 down on a car, had nothing left. Now it's paid and I have $80,000 (outside of my $500k 401K) and no debt........also had paid off my home and an installment loan in the process. Bought it brand new and refinanced 1 year later bringing my car payment down from $400 to $204 and the interest rate from 16.89% to 1.49%. Instead of paying the new monthly payment of $204, I purposely trippled my payments and paid it off. Lesson learned. My next car will be used but I'm going to hold onto my car and just save what I was paying in a car note for awhile then when I have no choice to get another car I'm paying in cash and bypassing these faulty car loans and interest rates.
