The more you stay at home, dwell on thoughts, isolate yourself the more anxiety you get, at least that was the case for me.
My experience, as well. I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, so it isn't entirely under my control. However, there are things that make it worse, and staying at home and not doing anything is one of those things.
i agree. i have a few anxiety disorder (gad, ocd, panic disorder) and the ONLY thing that helps is keeping myself busy. the hard part is convincing yourself to do that. anxiety overrules logic.

I’m 20 min outside of Seattle. A basic 1500 sq ft rambler is 500k.

Agree. When I am working more, I'm healthy and happy. When I'm not working it appears thats when I stress eat, gain weight, and have random anxiety/panic attacks

@@LemonDropYum yup. That’s literally they rule at all Universities. In order to get a degree at a University you typically MUST have at MINIMUM 45 credits from the University you want the degree from. That’s why generally you can only take Gen Eds at a CC.

Its crazy how debt makes a huge difference. I make 28000 a year but I don't have any debt of any kind, no kids,, and I live quite comfortably in my state. It's not always about how much you make, its what you do with what you make. 💯

@@doublezeroisourhero 28K a year is only "broke" if you are unhappy and struggling. The OP stated they are living quite comfortably without debt and seem to be happy, they are far from "broke". However, I would be "broke" if I made 28K a year due to debt and other items I choose to spend my money on. Luckily, I make a little more than 28K and am living a comfortable/happy lifestyle albeit paying down debt responsibly utilizing Dave's technique that I accrued as a youngster. Just because a number appears low to you does not mean it is low to someone else.

I think the addition of John Deloney has made Dave look at these calls a little differently, he definitely tries to get an understanding of the mental health before telling them to sell the kids

It sounds like her anxiety comes from her being unemployed and feeling powerless. When she gets a job and feels she has some kind of control over her debt, life and future, her anxiety will disappear.

My anxiety and depression was at it's worst when I was unemployed. She needs to get back out there and DO something. Her mentally health will improve

I am on the fence on this. Anxiety is very real. For some people, they literally cannot move because their body is responding as if they’re in the middle of a mass shooting, even though nothing is going on.
However if your anxiety is so bad that you can’t work, you should be able to collect disability. If it’s not, then I’d suggest more therapy and medication. I have tons of family with anxiety, some are on a daily pill and some take them as needed. All respond very well to the meds.

Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got to talking about investment and money. I started investing with $150k and in the first 2 months, my portfolio was reading $274,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and get more interesting. For over a year we have been working together making consistent profit just bought my second home 2 weeks ago and care for my family.
Hi. I’ve been forced to find additional sources of income as I got retrenched. I barely have time to continue trading and watch my investments since I had my second child. Just listening to this call was raising my anxiety 🙄
There are so many people stuck at the bottom rung of the socioeconomic scale who don't have motivation because they just don't know what to do or how to lift themselves up. The emotional toll that poverty takes is defeating them. That's one reason Dave is so great - he counsels people to get up and just do SOMETHING and that gets momentum going.

I have suffered awful, debilitating anxiety since I was 15. I’m 42 now. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. I’ve been let go from jobs in the past because of it. I see a therapist, and do my best. It’s always there, but I get periods where it comes on so bad for 3 or 4 months where I just can’t function. I work, but everyone at work notices it. I hate it. I always try to save money just incase I lose my job again from it. It was probably 10 years ago since I lost my job because of it and ever since then I’m really paranoid of losing another one. Anxiety is real people. And it’s a living hell. My heart goes out to this woman.
dave is good at telling who needs shouting at, and who needs to be calmly informed that they need to change what they are doing immediately.

Honestly can we appreciate how Dave handled this call? Not raising his voice or calling them out or anything, but was looking for true understanding to give sound advice and sounded like he felt for them
Yeah, I'm glad he was gentle with her. Although I think she needs to get out and get a job, you can tell that she is not making up her anxiety. She really has it. She just needs to do something to help pay this debt off and then her anxiety will at least lesson without all the worries of the debt.

I'm always a little skeptical when people start talking about anxiety. Like don't we all live with a baseline of stress and worry? But you just go out and face it. Every day. Every day.
Well, we all do not face the same baseline level of anxiety. It is a bell curve. There are people whose sympathetic nervous systems are genetically predisposed to go off the rails easier. Every body is unique and has different highs and lows

A panic attack feels like a heart attack and can make people go to the er fully believing they need help. Not everyone who simply has "anxiety" is dealing with something like that. A lot of people are just nervous or scared and they let that take over, they refuse to fight or confront or think through the feeling to do what they should be doing
This is absolutely insane. Imagine being like a target stock person or McDonald’s cashier and being the sole provider for that family while carrying $145k in bad debt. The weight and stress that person must feel, I can’t even imagine. Good bless and good luck

I like that he doesn’t dismiss the severity of anxiety and the necessity of treatment when giving this woman the advice to try to seek employment. Her situation is one that really doesn’t have many options outside of “increase your income”

Anxiety is no excuse. I’ve been living with “high levels of generalised anxiety disorder” since I was 16 (28 now) yes it can be crippling, yes it’s unfair, blah blah blah. It’s no excuse. You can get all the therapy and medication that you desire, but the only person that can change that, is you. People that have anxiety can become lazy and blame their life’s problems on it, but it’s only detrimental to you and nobody else. Once you realise that, doors begin to open.
@@saulgoodman2018 No it’s not. But when you’re in a slump as this person clearly is and you’re using anxiety as your main contributing factor to poverty, something needs to change. Success is never built in your comfort zone.
Perhaps a better approach would steer them to get help rather than insult them and say if I can do it you can do it. Maybe she can start off small once she and her therapist begins to make progress all the while severely minimizing her lifestyle.

The reason for my comment was to point out that blaming anxiety for your problems, won’t get you very far. There’s nothing more to it.

I work a lot and have a lot of anxiety around my work, but my anxiety was highest when I was jobless.
This guy gives the most basic financial advice and every caller seems bewildered. Ive always lived responsibly and within my means and its shocking how many people rack up tons of debt and make bad financial decisions everyday

Everytime I think life is getting hard I always watch these and think " it could always be worse"
I actually started getting anxiety due to the stress of not being a provider in my home. Yes I work and help by being a stay at home mom. But there’s something about not bringing in a paycheck & going from independent to dependent really triggered my anxiety.
Her getting a job, or two, and her husband getting a second job will help her anxiety for sure!! They both need to grow up a bit and work on getting actual careers, so they can better care for the needs of their child
Gotta call bs on the anxiety thing. Not that she doesn’t have it; a lot of people do. I was diagnosed with PTSD after my year long trip to Iraq (2003-2004.) I have insomnia, anxiety, nightmares, etc. I still go to work everyday. Some days it’s really hard. But I and millions of other people do it. This lady needs a job. Fast food, janitorial, drive for Uber, Uber eats, mechanical Turk, etc. Lots of options.

Yes. It's not that mental health issues aren't a serious problem. But society can't be patting people on the head and absolving them of any responsibility because of these issues. It's like people forget that the world doesn't owe us anything. I live in Boston. It's probably a global top 25 city, and would probably be the 5th most important economic hub in the USA, behind NYC, SF, LA, and Chicago. So, big magnet city for immigrants. Strangely, I don't encounter people from Africa, South Asia, East Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, etc, with anxiety issues too crippling to go work. Seems pretty unique to people born here.

@@user56gghtf The key thing I keep going back to is the fact that she said her anxiety started after she stopped working. Granted I don’t know her but my gut feeling is she’s making excuses. I know people who have been through nightmare situations and still find legal ways to earn a living. But it is entirely possible I’m being too judgmental and pessimistic.

Been depressed dealing with military just to pay off debt. Without a debt, my job just feels like fun with the occasional laugh at stress. Debt free is the way to go and I have Dave Ramsey and team to thank for the course of my life.

With all due respect, as someone who suffers from an anxiety disorder, this kind of thinking often does more harm than good. It's also highly offensive to those of us who require medication to control the anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are not easily managed. I think that getting out of the house for work and getting her finances under control will help, but it wont eliminate it.

Perhaps, but reaching out to Dave is a huge step in the right direction and shows a willingness to at least try. Maybe with some guidance she and her husband CAN get their income up and begin getting out of debt.
Yep bankruptcy is probably their best bet. Or just pay car payment, and mortgage if they have one. And send everyone else five bucks a month or nothing. And don’t answer your phone for seven years. Or get a job. No reason a mom can’t earn 1000 bucks a month between a part time job and selling on eBay... or something. This person has really been living under a rock.

I was out of work, related to illness for six months and suffered from debilitating anxiety. I would wake up every morning with a sense of "impending doom." No matter what activities I engaged myself, the symptoms persisted until I was capable of returning to work.
Her anxiety is related to a lack of productivity. She needs to return to work and the anxiety will likely heal itself.
My younger sister sent me in this direction after a convo we had a few days ago. I’ve listened to a few of these types of videos over the past couple days and I must say there are tons of people in far worst situations than my own. That doesn’t make me feel better about myself but encourages me cause things could be far worst. I’m 32 with 55k debit and for some reason this guy makes me feel like tackling that challenge could be a lot easier than I was assuming. Putting his baby steps plan in action asap.
I love how Dave makes it seem like 33K in CC debt is nothing. Paying off 33K when you're making below avg income is very hard
I don't think he felt is was nothing, but it's important to point out that 80% of the debt will still be around after bankruptcy. And he's right that even if ALL the debts were gone, they still have to solve the income problem.
Yep. They will be in the defaulted interest rate bracket which is like 20% or some crazy figure. At that income level they will be making minimum payments that barely touch any principal.
But nobody pointed a gun at them and told them, "Sign up for this loan or you will be shot!" They did this of their own free will. And now they find out it wasn't free at all!

Perhaps not completely. I have an anxiety disorder, and dont have complete control over it. However, some things help, but do not eliminate entirely, the anxiety that I have. Agreed that it will help, but I dont think it will entirely eliminate it. It may make it more manageable, though.
@@nazarenecaffeine Agreed! People have anxiety over a lot of different things, but eliminating some of the bad things in their life like toxic relationships or debt can definitely help make it more manageable. The less you have to worry about the more control you can get about the anxiety.

I've dealt with major depressive disorder and I dragged myself to therapy once I failed a job interview. People need to want to solve their mental health issues. Using it as an excuse to not do something will get you to rock bottom very quickly. Instead of getting defensive, own up to it and do whatever you can to handle your anxiety because it's going to ruin you.

I suffer from severe anxiety disorder and severe depression but I go to work every day. I hate when people use it as an excuse to not work. It's not an excuse, they are just lazy.

@mikael englund self pity and sitting idle doesn't help boost confidence or change your mood. It's not a matter of comparison. Get out, work, accomplish things and take pride in it. When you sit idle you put your mind in a dark place and just make yourself feel worse.

Hey guys, I was in the SAME situation this lady was in and I could HELP HER ALOT. Pretty much, she's doing the right thing seeing someone about the anxiety issues *(As this was prob triggered during the stresses of collage. This is a very common thing)* and she got great advice from you about needing to get on Dave's plan and CARE LESS about letting people down. Live your own life and when someone isn't happy with you, you smile and tell them that's all you can do. I was 60K in debt making 30K and now I'm debt free, making 80K. Took about 3-4 years.
