This is one of those movies I decided to watch without any context of what it was about. I fell absolutely in love with it. Ellish and Tony's relationship was adorable to watch. I can't even imagine the deep homesickness and the bravery to move to a different country and build a life especially during that time when letters could take weeks or months to reach your loved ones.

Love love love love this movie.
ETA: I love how she's not really choosing between two men. She's choosing who can make choices about her life: she chooses herself. ❤

My mum and dad emigrated from the west of Ireland in 1948 and 1949. The native language in their remote villages was Gaelige (Irish). My mother lived close to my Dad's older sister (20 years his senior) but they didn't know each other in Ireland at all. They met up and fell for each other in Boston. My mum really liked this film. RIP Padraic agus Aine!

Thank you for reacting to this beautiful movie. Some things I love about Brooklyn:
    * The relationship between Eilish and Tony. The actors have great chemistry, they truly love each other, and none of the dramatic tension in the movie depends on jerkish behavior from either of them.
    * The kindness that Eilish receives from so many people, especially in New York. You edited out a lot of the movie where she was struggling to adjust to her new life. For instance, her manager at the department store could have put Eilish on notice or even fired her, but instead she saw to it that Eilish got the help she needed.
    * The cinematography was outstanding, as was the soundtrack.
Saoirse Ronan has been in some other fine films, including Atonement, The Lovely Bones, Hanna, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Lady Bird. She plays very different characters in all these movies.
"Once" is a movie set in Ireland that you would probably like. It's gentle and romantic, like Brooklyn. I'd love it if you reacted to it.
    Thanks again!

I love this movie. I’m first Gen Italian and it hits me in right in the feels. For so many reasons. The feeling of having family in a different country but having a life here. I’m grateful my parents came to America but it is kind of like living a half life in both worlds. And I haven’t been to see my family in Italy since the pandemic and it hurts me so much. Luckily this summer they’re all coming here to visit for 3 months and I just can’t wait! My father passed away last March and they couldn’t come for the services. So I’m so looking forward to sharing moments with my uncles who remind me of him so very much.

As an Irish person who emigrated 20 years ago (I m now home) this movie hits me in so many ways.
Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson are awesome in this and have awesome chemistry. Dame Judi Dench is great as the cranky but loving mother figure. In fact the whole cast did a great job.

I’m a fan of reaction channels and was overjoyed to see some FINALLY doing this one. And I was delighted when she loved it. Kudos for breaking the ice. I hope to see more people do this in the future. (It would be awesome if you ever did Paper Moon, another of my favorites that no one ever does.)

Ever since its release, this movie has had a reputation as "The movie everyone says they love, but no one appears to have actually seen," best exemplified in the Honest Trailer for that year's Oscars: "Look, I'll be honest. I haven't seen Brooklyn, and neither have you." So you can cross that off.

Glad you watched this. I knew you'd love it. I rented it years ago not knowing much about it other than a few clips. I've always been drawn to UK and Irish films.
I do have some Irish ( County Roscommon) and Scottish in my heritage. Anyways, this movie was a bittersweet lovely surprise overall. SR is a lovely young woman, first time I ever saw her was in the movie--Atonement (with James McAvoy), she was only around 11 yrs old then I think. Later she was in- The Lovely Bones, which was good but very..... heart-wrenching too. Might be one to think about watching sometime. Quite a few well known actors are in it. Onward, funny that Julie Walters was in this along with D.Gleeson as she played his Mother, Mrs.Weasley in the Harry Potter films. So glad this movie really grabbed you in the heart. Nite, Sam.😊Slainte'🍹

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I wish Eilis hadn't married Tony before she left. That was too much pressure to put on her and I feel like she might have been happier if she had stayed in Ireland. But this is a lovely character piece and it's nice hearing Saoirse get to use her real accent.

@Jan Leonard : I don't think you understood the meaning of Tony's character, or the meaning of the relationship between him and Eilis lol ! ; but honestly, i don't blame u, because most of the people who saw this movie, didn't understand it either !!! .

    • @janleonard3101
      @janleonard3101 Год назад

@@giuliapicchiotti It might be differences in the way Tony was portrayed in the book. IIRC he came across as very insecure and pressuring Eilis to marry him before leaving because he was afraid she wouldn't come back. I remember thinking Eilis was very happy back home and the only reason she went back was because of the marriage.
I didn't think Tony was a bad guy, just immature and Jim seemed like a better match. I would love to hear your take on it, though. It would make me feel better if I could believe Eilis made the best choice for herself.
