sadly Katherine was the only one of the group who lived long enough to see this movie come out. She passed away two years ago at the age of 101.

What movie failed to show is the human computer job was a mind-numbing brutal job. The human computer had to solve the same equations thousands of times a day. All day long with a 100% accuracy. She was so focus and so good at her job. The white engineers demanded she stayed and refused to allow her to return to the general pool of human computers.

Well before this movie was ever made, I heard about these human computers at NASA in an unexpected way. I'm an archivist and the woman who wrote the book Hidden Figures was doing research at the National Archives where I worked. I was on the research desk and she was the only researcher that day so, out of boredom, I asked her what she was working on. She told me all about her research into these Black women who worked at NASA. I was gobsmacked. Cut to several years later and the movie is being made. When I heard it was based off her book, my first thought was I MET HER!

No they didn’t. The movie was complete bullcrap.

  • @Rmlohner

One controversial part of this movie is the entirely invented scene where Kevin Costner (I'm not even bothering with the character name, because everyone just thinks of him as Kevin Costner anyway) knocks down the colored bathroom sign. In fact, Katherine simply started using the white bathroom without asking anyone's permission, and was never caught. The filmmakers apparently thought something more dramatic was needed, but it got several accusations of pointlessly giving a hero moment to a white character that no one at the time actually deserved.

IIRC from the book - which is phenomenal - the coffee pot issue never happened either, and the car breakdown that starts the film is complete fiction, but otherwise it's amazingly faithful. The events actually took place over about 15 years, not the 3 - 4 shown in the film, but that's forgiveable.

This was an inspirational film and one of my favorites. Btw, Pharrell Williams wrote most of the songs and produced the music for this movie. That's why it sounds so good and fits so well.
It is interesting that the story of these very influential women was mostly unknown until this book and movie came out. Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson had already passed away when the book came out. In fact, these women had barely received any recognition until after the book came out after which Katherine Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson were all awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2019. Katherine Johnson was the only one still alive at the time.

If anyone needs some clarity, here’s a rundown on the Mercury 7:
-Alan Shepard became the first American in space (three weeks after Yuri Gargarin’s mission) in the Mercury-Redstone 3, a 15 minute suborbital flight which served as a simple proof of concept that the capsule could keep a person alive through the tremendous G-forces. He was eager for more missions, but was discovered to have the dizziness-causing ear condition Meniere’s Disease, which appeared to doom any chance of it (Kristin Chenoweth also has it, which is why you might notice her occasionally leaning on the piano during live performances). But after several years, he took a risky experimental surgery that could have left him permanently deaf, but successfully cured him, and he was able to step on the Moon as the commander of Apollo 14, best known for his demonstrating how far a golf ball can be hit in the lower gravity. At 47, he was the oldest person in space until John Glenn went back at age 77. He was played by Scott Glenn in The Right Stuff (movie), Ted Levine in From the Earth to the Moon, Desmond Harrington in The Astronaut Wives Club, and Jake McDorman in The Right Stuff (series).
-Gus Grissom flew the Mercury-Redstone 4, a repeat of Shepard’s mission that also included a new explosive hatch to allow for a fast escape. Unfortunately, the hatch malfunctioned after his landing in the ocean and the capsule and its data were lost when the crew elected to instead save the quickly drowning Grissom. He was cleared of any fault in the incident and was made commander of the first Apollo mission, and likely would have been the first person on the Moon. But tragically, he and his crewmates Ed White and Roger Chaffee were killed in a horrific accident during the plugs-out test for the rocket. He was played by Fred Ward in The Right Stuff (movie), Steve Bernie in Apollo 13, Mark Rolston in From the Earth to the Moon, Brian Cranston in That Thing You Do, Joel Johnstone in The Astronaut Wives Club, Shea Whiggam in First Man, and Michael Trotter in The Right Stuff (series).
-John Glenn flew the Mercury-Atlas 6, which made three full orbits around the Earth. He resigned from NASA in 1964 and became a Senator for 24 years, before going into space again in 1998 at age 77, setting a new record for the oldest person in space which was broken just this year by the 90 year old William Shatner. He was played by Ed Harris in The Right Stuff (movie), Sam Reid in The Astronaut Wives Club, Matt Battaglia in For All Mankind, and Patrick J. Adams in The Right Stuff (series).
-Scott Carpenter flew the Mercury-Atlas 7, a repeat of Glenn’s mission which landed far off course. He was blamed for the error and left NASA in 1964 for the Navy SEALAB, where he spent a month living on the ocean floor. He made a full retirement from the military in 1969. He was played by Charles Frank in The Right Stuff (film), Wilson Bethel in The Astronaut Wives Club, and James Lafferty in The Right Stuff (series).
-Walter Schirra flew the Mercury-Atlas 8, a nine hour flight which proved the capsule could handle such an extended period in space. He went on to be part of the Gemini program where he performed the first rendezvous between spacecraft, and commanded Apollo 7, the program’s first crewed launch with a low orbit shakedown test. He was the only person to fly in all three programs (though Grissom would have done it too if not for his untimely death). He was played by Lance Henrikson in The Right Stuff (movie), Mark Harmon in From the Earth to the Moon, Aaron McClusker in The Astronaut Wives Club, and Aaron Staton in The Right Stuff (series).
-Gordo Cooper few the Mercury-Atlas 9, the last of the Mercury program and the last solo space mission to date, which lasted so long that he became the first person to sleep in space. He also flew in the Gemini program and proved a person could survive a round trip to the Moon by spending eight days in space. He was played by Dennis Quaid in The Right Stuff (movie), Robert C. Treveiler in From the Earth to the Moon, Bret Harrison in The Astronaut Wives’ Club, and Colin O’Donoghue in The Right Stuff (series). The character Gordo Stevens in For All Mankind is also based on him, though the name change allows for more artistic leeway (he’s portrayed as part of the Apollo 10 crew, which Cooper was on the backup crew for).
-Deke Slayton never got to go to space due to an irregular heart rhythm, and instead became NASA’s Flight Director, overseeing the entire Apollo program. He was played by Scott Paulin in The Right Stuff (movie), Chris Ellis in Apollo 13, Nick Searcy in From the Earth to the Moon, Kenneth Mitchel in The Astronaut Wives Club, Kyle Chandler in First Man, Chris Bauer in For All Mankind, and Micah Stock in The Right Stuff (series).

I got this movie as a gift years ago, from my music teacher in high school. I was a really good student in many subjects, and I'd done a project in music that he wanted to thank me for. He was a bit disappointed that I didn't intend to persue music, but he knew I wanted to be an astrophysicist. So he chose this film.
I found it really sweet of him, and kind of inspiring. I've been at university for a while now, and like... I'm not some super genius like Katherine who is gonna make revolutionary breakthroughs. It's unlikely I'm gonna end up at NASA, given that I'm not even American. But still, sometimes it weighs you down being the only woman in a room full of men all the time, and those kinds of stories can help me to remain confident.

Shortly before this film's release, Katherine Johnson also appeared in the series Timeless, about a time-travelling trio fighting a guy who's trying to make a bunch of history worse. The episode also took a shot at the Apollo 13 film for not featuring her, despite her having played an important role in saving that crew. It was a pretty neat show that unfortunately way too few people watched, though the ones that did were actually vocal enough that the network quickly reversed its decision to cancel the show after its first season, and while it was cancelled for real after the second, we still got one final double-length episode to wrap the story up.

I like anything space related but I did not know about this movie when it came out. I first saw a trailer for it on a big screen TV while shopping. There was no sound but when I saw the Mercury capsule, I knew I would be interested in it and then the trailer also showed the first scene where they are stuck on the road with the cop giving them attitude. So space and racism in a single movie made it a must watch for me. I know so much about the early space program and never had I learned about this. I really enjoyed it. If you want another "true" space movie (not science fiction) check out "The Right Stuff" from 1983, it won 8 Oscars and it is about the beginnings of the space program. If you want to explore the other theme of this movie which was civil rights, check out "Mississippi Burning" from 1988 it also won a lot of Oscars, 7 actually.

They had to take the Black boxes which consisted of switches and flashing lights, write them down, transpose them to number, plug them into the equation and solve the equations. Going through the same steps for weeks or months at a time. Brutal, mind-numbing work. Hard work.

Great movie, which was made even better because it was a true story. This is a classic case of why Critical Race Theory is the correct way to teach. Portraying the social inequities do not glorify them, but it is important to show the errors in the ways that were the norms. Teaching with sanitized subject matter is preaching, We cannot grow as a society or as individuals unless we learn how things happened before us.

I don't remember how I heard about it, but this' one of few movies I went to see with my cousin & her husband. My request. We all enjoyed it!
Back in the 70s, NASA was painted as this all-white, all-male agency! We were led to believe the female astronauts in the Space Shuttle were the first women in NASA (excluding secretaries); & ditto the Black astronauts. Looking back, it's sad to think how much a segment of America was waking up to the value of women & Blacks outside of traditional roles thru the 70s; & yet important Black people in NASA were invisible.
(Take above with a grain of salt. I was a kid during the 70s, so probably have a different perspective from someone ten to twenty years older than me.)
I have a weird memory concerning Friendship 7. No idea if I saw anything on TV; or comprehended what was aired. But there was a Casper the Friendly Ghost comic I got that told the problem in orbit in a kid-friendly way, & suggested that Casper helped!
I held onto that comic until it finally fell apart.

How sad it is that I just spent all afternoon and night at SD Pride, been looking forward to it all year, hoping to feel accepted, but no one spoke to me other than a few "excuse me"'s after bumping into me, and I get home and feel a much better human connection watching a movie reaction video? Not a reflection on this video, just my failure as a person.

These ladies had two things against them, their colour and their gender but they were determined and incredibly intelligent. Whilst a very different film this has similarities with 'Red Tails' where black pilots were thought incapable of flying let alone combat missions. It ends up with white bomber crews asking for the Red Tails as their escorts. So many times black people where held back simply because of their colour but we must celebrate those that would not accept it and rose above it with pride,

This was a great movie. Based on a true story
Based, meaning that a lot I'd made up oe over exaggerated for dramatic effect.
They make way too much of the bathroom issue, the rwal story was she went to yhe other building only once. Next day she looked for the women's bathroom bit it had a "whites only sign", she took it off and threw it in the trash, someone put it back up, she threw it back in the trash, and after a few more times, they stopped putting it back up. There was no heroic white guy smashing the sign. The racist Sheldon, character was made up, because the screen wrier wanted to show that there was racism in the 60s, but there was no racism at NASA at that time. Note the only segregation among the mathematicians was that the men worked in one room the women in another, race was not a factor. And the woman that wouldn't let her be a manager, was made up also for dramatic story telling, to show that she had to work hard to become the first black female manager at NASA.
And the part about not being allowed to be in the meetings, the story is actually very different. In real life she asked if she could attend, the manager said no computers ever asked to attend, and she said is there any rule against it and he said no. She attend the meetings the very first time she asked.

      @OGBReacts  2 года назад +1

Oh wow! I understand making things up for dramatic effect but I wish they kept the bathroom thing true to the story; it would’ve been nice to see HER do that instead of the him.

@@OGBReacts me too her actual story was far more interesting, when she got that scholarship at the beginning, her family moved 3 hrs away to get her to the svhool. Then her father commuted 3 hrs each way to work and home every day so that she could attend. And she got a PhD in math. She was a school teacher, who got recruited into the Department of the Army. To do ballistic trajectory calculations to improve artillery accuracy. Then when NASA was formed she moved there and went there with a solid reputation as a math wiz, by the engineers and other mathematicians.

I hadn't seen it until it came to Tv. I didn't know about these ladies but that's what's cool about some movies based on real ppl/ events, it opens up your awareness more. I really loved the movie, ever since I saw Taraji in Benjamin Button, I just really felt an affinity for, like she would make a cool bestie lol. Octavia- I've seen in various things over the years. And Janelle Monae, I knew firstly as a singer here and there before seeing her pop up in movies. (If I remember right she's Pansexual also.) Anyways, I really liked Kevin Costner in this. And Kirsten Dunst, she is best known for as a child, playing Claudia in- Interview with a Vampire, and in Jumanji along Robin Williams. Was good to watch your reactions to this one Sam. 😊📺🎬🛰📚

There's only one thing that ruins this movie for me, and that's Mary saying (and I'm nitpicking here) "Can you believe it's 1960 something and we're following a police car!"
In order to say that, she would have to know that the future would be different and better, by comparison.
