I just want to clarify something I say in the video: I said white people are IN CHARGE of fixing racism, but what I really meant by that is white people are RESPONSIBLE for fixing racism. Being the perpetrators of it means being the ones responsible for changing. But the only way to do that is to listen and empathize and then elevate black voices and act on their points of action.

I understood what you meant. It's important. People think it happened so long ago. My father is not yet 70. He attended an integrated school for the first time in the 12th grade. The Black school sometimes has a school reunion. At one of them the (white) superintendent confessed that he had been instructed to remove all record of Black achievement from the school libraries. In the Black community, the school library served as the community library. BTW. That bathroom change didn't happen. They put it in the movie to make space for the "white hero".

@@jaikens2958 yes this was really not that long ago.. and racism isn’t even gone! I’m in the Minneapolis area and just a year ago my older kids’ high school had a scandal where a white girl on the basketball team sent “Off yourself” “dirty N” texts to a few black girls on the team. Her MOTHER (I.e. her very first teacher… 🎶you’ve got to be taught to hate and fear… it’s got to be drummed in your dear little ear.. you have to be carefully be taught🎵) was the girls’ coach and a classroom teacher… she quit over it.
Obviously a lesser extent than actual segregation-and even lesser than “off yourself dirty N”…. But when this was going on my half-Korean daughter told me she had been called a ch**k at school (I loved her response… “I’m Korean you f’ing idiot! If you’re going to be a racist POS at least call me G**K you f’ing idiot”). I didn’t even know kids still knew those Asian slurs, and fortunately she was more angry than hurt or afraid… but she did beg me NOT to enroll my twin 3-yr-old full Somali (step)daughters into this district when the time comes 😢

The idea that white people are the sole perpetrators of racism in this country is nonsense. I mean, I get what you were saying, but the way you said it is incotrect.
And if you are following the idea that racism requires political or social power, you should be aware that the word "racism" has four distinct definitions. Only #4 would require social power. According to the other definitions, anyone, anywhere, can be racist, and are.
Or did you miss the "What Are We Doing to White People" video?

@@GrumpyOldGuyPlaysGames @Grumpy Old Guy Plays Games We'll have to agree to disagree. What you're describing is prejudice. Anyone can be prejudiced, which basically means to pre-judge. A POC could stand on a corner all day and shout " I hate ___ people" and nothing will happen to that person. I've seen POC call the police FOR help and be brutalized. Whites & people of color commit the same crimes but the POC is sentenced more harshly. (also, check out "criming while white") When POC get a lower appraisal for their homes, higher interest rates on loans (despite having the same risk assessment) and some HOA still prohibit the sale of property to POC. That affects lives, upward mobility, access to health, proper education, etc. THAT is racism. Somebody giving you dirty looks is a nuisance and an inconvenience in comparison. When they can call the cops on you like customer service that's a totally different reality.

23:14 - Sadly, this scene didn't happen and its addition to the movie has been called whitewashing because it basically turns Costner's character into a white saviour. In reality, the restrooms were segregated but not marked as such (all the black women had their own building, so no need to mark their restrooms as "colored" or any others as "white") so Katherine just used the white restroom.
She wasn't allowed into mission control, either, she watched the launch at her desk.

Interesting take of this. I don't see him portrayed as a savior - in every case, he is following up with Kathrine, not leading.
All movies trying to portray real events have to juggle facts, incidents, and people, in order to keep it under the time limit and to make it valuable enough for a good-sized audience - otherwise, it is a documentary with a fraction of the viewership. This will always be subjective decisions up and down the line. Hopefully this particularly movie will get people to read the book (which also with juggle things, although far less).
There is an interesting RUclips video on the real facts and the made-up ones at:
Top 10 Things Hidden Figures Got Factually Right & Wrong
Several of the white characters, including Costner's character, were made up or a composite. And the events often happened at different times and not within the narrow two or three year window of the film. But I personally feel the story of the segregation and others was important because for many viewers, this was also as hidden as the story of the three women. (The facility was ceased to be segregated a few years earlier, when NASA took over.)
I also hope that the real people involved still around wound up feeling good about how this turned out in general. I hope . . .

Great callous to John Nash! I'm from WV and my brother was also a math genius that fell victim to schizophrenia in college. He got accepted to Princeton, like Nash, at 16 but ended up going to Williams, but had to drop out due to his schizophrenia his junior year. He unfortunately lost the battle with his voices to suicide when he was 21 and I was 19 and between my freshman and sophomore year of college. I LOVE this movie! Kevin Costner's character as a combination of 3 separate historical figures, similar to what Craig Mazin did with Chernobyl where he casted a single character as the "academic community" behind what was going on. Watch the finale of TBBT theory to restore your faith in Jim, who is 50 today! If you haven't seen him in the Netflix limited series "Hollywood" and the Netflix movie "The Boys in the Band", where he plays quite the asshole in those as well.

Part of the issue was prejudice of both color and sex. another was how they compartmentalize everything to keep things from being leak. If your department was the only one with certain information than if that information got out they knew to look in your department for the spy. so no two hands knew what the other was doing or why they were doing it. Knowing too much makes you a bigger threat to security. But not knowing enough causes the same repeated failures. It is hard for me to watch this film because I lived through the horror. As a child we were at a race track I wanted to use the restroom by my self and my dad let me... When I got there the line was long and I couldn't hold it, so I used the colored restroom where there was no line. When I entered there were no cubicles just toilets with men sitting on them, there was a trough in the floor with men shoulder to shoulder. I waited for an opening and did my business. I was then noticed, a man beside me exclaimed "What are you doing in here!" He grabbed me by the hand and rushed me out while the rest of the men glared at me. When the white people saw the man dragging me out, they surrounded us. I was pulled away from him and dragged away. I don't know what they did to him. He was only protecting me.

I tear up ALL the way through this movie, each of numerous times I watch it (and reaction videos).
Americans were behind in the space race from the beginning. The Soviets put up the first satellite, Sputnik, around 1957. (It was about the size of a basketball.) Our country was in total shock that the Russians had done this and led to an immediate push for science and engineering in all levels of schooling.
The USSR also beat us in getting men into space. Their program was done in secret and they only announced their successes after the fact. (America's was done under the glare of full publicity.) The Soviets may have cut corners on safety and perhaps lost men - all through the race to the moon, no American died IN space, although three died in a fire while on the ground.
I was born in 1950 and I remember JFK issuing challenge to put a man on the moon before the end of the 1960's. Popular science magazines were full of articles explaining the steps to be taken, and the timetable for each. I literally thought that 1969 would never get here.
I am still stunned it took this long for contributions of these women and other marginalized people to be even HINTED at, at least in popular culture. I'm glad, though, it was done in such a great movie, although even now, many people have never heard of any of this. Thanks for your reaction and for sharing it with us.

As white women computers were disposable and not remembered except by those who did have to interact with them back in the day. So what's term used for Gender washing... That would be more important.

I'd like to take issue with two points. Firstly racism is not just about colour it is about race. Whether a Greek hates a Turk or a Brazilian hates an Argentinian or a Chinese hates a Taiwanese, it's all racism. Racism goes back thousands of years and involves all cultures. Secondly, you said that being non racist is not good enough, you must be anti-racist. That in itself presents problems, not solves them. Some extreme groups are now claiming that being white automatically makes you a racist and for a black person to insult you purely because your white is acceptable as they deem that to be anti-racism. That in itself is judging a person by their colour and not their personality. What we need is NO racism which means everyone getting along and not looking for racism where it mostly doesn't exist. If someone is blatantly racist then of course they must be brought to justice but we must stop pointing fingers at entire groups of people because by doing so we are creating more division in society.

You need to learn the difference between ethnicity, nationality & race. What do all those other nationalities in other countries have to do with racism in the U.S.? Which of those countries claimed to be home of the “free” where “all men” are created equal. Stop trying to justify bs by making inequivalent comparisons. We all know the racist culture the US was founded & built on. And you can’t look at a non-POC and immediately know their race like you can with Black people, so please stop with the ignorance.

@@mrkamenwatch It’ll actually add depth to the interactions between characters, so I’m sure it’ll just enhance your commentary. I’m 23 and hadn’t seen the original, but saw Maverick with family and enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to, so they still convey the complex relationships well.
By the way, my mom and I are both ABA trained working with elementary/middle school sp-ed, love your content so far!

@@t-lex6001 yeah that totally makes sense, definitely a reaction I'm down to do because I've heard really good things about Maverick.
That's awesome! It's such an amazing field to work in!

And of course these women would absolutely face racial prejudice, but there was also a massive amount of gender prejudice. But even without those two factors (that would again absolutely be something that felt every single day), there was also a massive amount of security issues, driven home from the thought of the Soviet Union recruiting disenfranchised Americans. The Red Scare witch hunts had only publicly ended a short while ago.
So even someone who was supporting of a woman or a black woman being a productive and valued part of the work force (something that would have been very rare at this time), would very much not allow someone without security clearance seeing any classified data. Or getting into a meeting or areas of Nasa that you had to have clearance to even walk into the room.
If a man had come into the office without proper security vetting, their absolutely would be people taking steps to remove anything remotely of a sensitive nature.
So realistically it would be all three concerns. Biased over race, and gender and the simple fact that they never received clearance.

That makes sense, thank you so much for your comments. They were very enlightening. Makes me want to learn more about the history of US space programs!

So... you keep talking about how horrible racism is, but you constantly called Mahershala Ali Blade. Blade was played by Wesley Snipes. You can't see the difference between black men?
