  • Recently, I was pondering this question: Is there a wrong or right way to beauty? So my aim in this video was to start a dialog around how to implement a beauty aesthetic and to provoke you to think of which is the right approach for YOU. It's a little disorganized, but I just had to get this off my chest. I would love to know your thoughts!

I also don't believe there's a right or a wrong way to do beauty. I agree with you that it's about self expression.i do think that there are unhealthy ways to beauty and that often beauty standards fuel unhealthiness around appearance and self-esteem.
My search for my own beauty has been through a journey of really painful poor self-image and self esteem. It has been a really rough couple of years in my life and I've sort of been put in the position of almost rebuilding myself from the ground up. One of the things I'm learning to do is to just be who I am instead of who I think I should be (to paraphrase Dr. Brené Brown). I have never liked my appearance or even been okay with my appearance. All of my thinking about it has been tangled up with self esteem, and so to unpick it all, I'm trying to allow myself to have the chance to discover my personal unique beauty, breaking out of the "shoulds" and the rules/standards.
I love that you bring up incorporating the beauty of the world into our definition of beauty. I love the beauty of the natural world, culture, and the arts, and remembering that beauty, even when I am frustrated or upset with appearance-based beauty, could definitely help.

I really appreciate this monologue. I remember when I was 13 I was hiking up a creek in my worn in 501s and a white t-shirts. I grew my hair to my butt and it was a beautiful sunny mountain day. This day I felt so beautiful! I wasn’t wearing any makeup and there wasn’t a mirror in sight or anyone to see me. The adventure I was on and being in nature connected me to my true nature. In the Kibbie I’m a dramatic classic type but my essence is a true natural!

I hope a lot of people get this more quickly than I did. Through my teens and most of my 20s, my goal of beauty was inauthenticity. I wanted to use aesthetic to hide every one of my genuine qualities and create something else, and unfortunately the way women in my life growing up approached beauty directly led to this approach. I connected beauty with negativity in the sense that “beauty” to me meant the weapon you have to conceal everything you hate about yourself and trick the world into seeing someone else.
Interestingly, much like your discussion of holistic approaches, what has helped me climb out of this black hole in my 30s has been much less about aesthetic and much more about mental health and exploring my inward self, which in turn led me to seek out healthier aesthetic approaches like ones that emphasize working with and not against nature.
I wish I could go back and have an honest conversation with people like my grandmothers who viewed beauty in such a toxic way and passed on their insecurities as somehow being the truth of womanhood. They didn’t deserve to live long lives with that kind of negativity any more than I do. What I can do is continue to evolve in my understanding of beauty as harmonious authenticity and share that message in the way I present myself. I’m determined that the toxicity in my family’s view of beauty ends at this generation.
    Great video, as always.

I struggled my entire life refusing my physical features partially due to society's standard of beauty and pop culture. The motive for discovering natural beauty is self acceptance and love. I'm learning about my body and how to dress my personal best based on my unique individuality. This is only part of my journey to self discovery but if helps me to love and accept myself through it, I see it as life changing. We all should be able to shine with our unique features. "Truth is beauty and beauty is truth".

Hi there! I enjoy your videos and your research a lot, Elyssa. From my perspective, we are so heavily influenced towards consuming beauty rather than being beauty that it really messed up with our perception. I've never seen a horse, a cat or a flower that I didn't find beautiful, so why do I struggle to see it in myself? I am part of nature and nature has its own beauty. And why does the media keep constantly telling me I have to buy something or do something (like some procedure) to feel like I am beautiful? While looking for things to express my own beauty when I was growing up, I was constantly told that what I brought to the table in terms of natural features (my hair, my body shape, my skin) were not beautiful and therefore unlovable. And I bet this was the same for many, many people. This is slowly changing in media discourse nowadays, but it was a very traumatic process and I still struggle with my body shape as a result. And let me tell you, I am quite average. I can't imagine what people with diverse body types go through, like people who are really tall, really short, really thin, people with disabilities, really overweight...
Going back to your last video, by being different from my white mom, I had no one to teach me how to beauty. She herself had no one and had lot of self-esteem issues, growing up with absolutely no chance of choosing her own clothes and looks. Which brings me to my other point: poverty. If beauty is so geared towards consuming a culture/subculture and all that it entails, not being able to afford being part of that culture is very painful and has real consequences on love/work/friendship prospects and self-esteem/self-image building. If you don't dress or act the part, you're not taken seriously, whatever the culture might be. One would expect that from mainstream culture but subcultures can be just as excluding, which undermines the point of them even existing in the first place.

SO many good points brought up here! I think one one I relate to a lot is poverty. I was by no means living in poverty growing up, but my family was most definitely on a shoe string budget. My parents tried their best but I remember for homecoming my freshman year I was given a $20 budget and because of that all o could afford was a nice top. I made the best of it and didn’t let it get me down too much, but I still had a feeling of insecurity. And I can still feel that way today with the bombardment of advertisements and media images. But the difference is that I know that my budget is a representation of my authenticity. And sometimes making the best of what I have right now is a representation of my authenticity. There’s all these little nuances and experiences when we beauty (

the term "beauty standard" is kind of an oxymoron, isn't it. if it's truly beautiful, why would it be compared to anything else?
i feel like the unhealthy ways of thinking about beauty involve judgment of yourself and others and that it stops being about beauty and starts being about competition.

Elyssa, thank you for bringing to social media a non-materialistic/reductionistic approach to beauty. I struggle with a skin condition that changes drastically my appearance during flare-ups and in such moments I can only wear wide cotton clothes (not ideal for a soft-classic!). Thus, the mainstream superficial narrative does not help when my superficial layer of being (skin) is compromised. Instead, what helps me is questions that treat the physical as a channel or a manifestation of something less tangible. If during my flare-ups someone can see beyond the condition and see me as a human through the different layers of manifestation and see my soul, that is beauty. If even in those moments my non-physical traits of softness, symmetry, femininity, etc. can shine through my overall aesthetic and be seen... That is beauty :)
PS: you are beautiful when you are not constricted from the rigidness of perfectionism! ;)

I think at the end of the day, beauty is about authentic emotional fulfillment and ultimately changeable artistic expression. I've found for myself that as soon as I feel like I need to understand how to recreate an aesthetic with too much detail or with too much dedication, it just made me feel really depressed.
Starting this year, I decided I will commit myself to a somewhat specific aesthetic that really made my heart sing, but just for this year. At the end of the year, I plan on reflecting on whether or not I want to continue and invest more into it or explore something new the next year.
I honestly think it allows for much more creative freedom and makes me feel like I am not stuck under the burden of committing to a certain idea or look, but creating like an artist following my inspirations. Dedication to a longer time frame allows me really feel the aesthetic in my own life and reap the deeper fulfillment that it will bring, but its not too long, so I know that next year an entirely different sort of beauty experience is waiting for me and that feels so exciting.

At times I can get so bogged down by pinning labels on myself and fully “committing” to them, but end up ultimately losing myself in the process and the whole thing starts to feel icky and stifling. It stops being about finding an outlet of expression and more about obsessing over frivolities

I love how your eyes naturally follow your thoughts while you express yourself in this monologue. It's really unique and authentic! I have always admired the beauty present in nature and in the arts, but it took me a couple of decades to realise that I was disconnected from authentic human beauty. We are brainwashed into an artificial idea of beauty since we are born so that we don't appreciate ourselves as we are and consume products in order to feel better. A competition against weight, against age, against other women. We judge ourselves by the standards of society, media and corporations and compare ourselves to other people 24/7. That's how we get lost in the way. For me real beauty is the expression of our authentic energy. And it's fundamentally natural and diverse because it's always present in the lines and colours of our bodies (always available) but also in our voice, our feelings and through our movements. It can be enhanced through clothing, make up and creativity. But from my point of view those make us feel better especially because we are giving us loving time, attention and the permission to feel beautiful. You just made an excellent point in this video. We need to give to ourselves the permission to feel essentially beautiful at all times. Because we are. The more we connect with this essential beauty the more unique and unapologetic we become about our body and style, which inevitably leads us to authentic self expression. Thanks for all this constructive thoughts :)

When you talked about being attached to an identity based on music taste, I felt that in my soul! For so long I thought since I was a lover of heavy music, I needed to look "hard" or people wouldn't take me seriously. Same when I was single and queer - I felt like I needed to look blatantly masc or femme or I wouldn't be accepted. It's been a huge relief to let that go and just do what is in my lines and what makes me happy (I'm FN with a good dose of ethereal essence).

Ughh! LOVE listening to you speak, Elyssa! You have a gift 💕 I guess one thing I find interesting is the whole concept of inauthenticity. Dear Elyssa,
Wow, how Awesome!! Such great food for thought. To be honest, I have been caught up in the 'How' all this while and seem to have never thought about the 'Why'. I was amazed to hear your 'Why' - it almost borders on the Esoteric. It is indeed an expression of our Consciousness. How Sublime!! It is so ironical that people say beauty is just skin deep..not at all..to come to think of it Beauty is definitely a magnetic force - pure enigma..it is there everywhere but cannot be seen in plain sight until we decide to seek it. May your tribe grow 😍 I am so privileged to able to hear to such conversations, especially in the midst of banal mindless cacophony of images upon images.

You brought up an interesting point about being dishonest with ourselves. I, like all of us, have felt pressure to fit a specific beauty standard. I have conformed to that standard in the past and still do sometimes. I still sometimes think that if I conform to that standard I will receive preferential treatment and be viewed more positively. Pretty privilege is real, but only a certain type of pretty.
I have noticed a lot of femininity channels popping up on RUclips recently and I tried to be more feminine and dainty. I tried adding more frills and pink and it never felt right. As a FN with a lot of depth, it didn’t look right on me. I remember when I was younger adding blonde balayage and self tanner - turns out I look better natural.
Thankfully with age I have a better idea of what I like and what suits me best. It’s hard to embrace your own beauty, especially now. Normally, if I’m worried that I’m going against the status quo it means I’m doing it right.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! And this is precisely why we just simply follow what’s best for ourselves. For me, the frilly feminine details do look good, but my insides can only handle so much lol So it’s all about honoring and considering our total interrelation ✨

"Trying to figure out if you're a classic or natural" why you gotta call me out like that? LOL! Like with anything in life, I think having at least a basic understanding of who you are (inside and outside) and expressing that in an authentic way seems to make sense. Those in combination of allowing space to experiment to see what works or what you like/ don't like. I think what has always thrown me off is that I find myself to be confusing...whether it's personality, essence, physical traits, interests etc. I've never felt like I fit into ONE box, and I always wanted to because switching between multiple boxes felt like a headache. And while I still feel that way sometimes, I can at least see that bouncing between the boxes IS being authentic to me :D
Anyway, I really enjoy your videos where you sit down and talk like this too- it doesn't always have to be the super long curated stuff. Very relatable and insightful

I definitely see this new trend on focusing on indiwiduals and expresing ourselves, even here in Poland and I hope it's a new era! I love your aproach about beauty. It's similar to decorating. We like diffrerent styles but what makes an interior beautiful is always a harmony. But it's easier to say, that a flat is beautiful, than think that we are. I always like to think about style, that everyone is already a perfect painting and all we have to do is to create a matching frame, not try to fit into someone elses frame or change the painting.

Loved the part about allowing yourself the space to find your own 'beauty' instead of trying to squish yourself into a predetermined aesthetic. And really when you think about it - those famous fashion/style icons (Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, etc.) are famous because they expressed themselves as unique individuals instead of trying to copy anyone else. They 'invented' the aesthetics we see now simply by being themselves!

This is great, and very true. And this is where it gets challenging, if you can sense someone you know dressing from a dishonest place, but then they defend their choices by the name of their individuality without a deeper honesty as to why they are dressing that way.
I see this with women who get cosmetic surgery (purely to augment their face rather than after an accident or something). It’s an “accept everyone!” argument, but what if you can sense someone to be making a decision from a place of SELF-REJECTION? Does it make sense to “accept” that form of rejection? It becomes very relative and easy to justify really distorted and potentially harmful choices with this kind of logic. It’s not about harshly judging anyone, but simply an invitation to a deeper honesty and vulnerability, a calling for a more responsible choice of self-love and authentic individual expression.
There’s a great paradox in beauty where, what I sense to be the most beautiful, is as you say, that “harmony”. This harmony is subjective, and yet, when the subjective harmony is expressed in artful alignment, it has an objective resonate vibration of harmonic intelligence, of individuality. The rose and the lily are infinitely beautiful because there are completely full in their unique expression.
Same with music, you can feel when music is made from authentic creativity versus following a top 40 cookie cutter model. So it is actually possibly to articulate and discern something that is of greater or lesser integrity. And it becomes useless and sometimes even dangerous to use the argument of “it’s all relative” and “you can choose what you want”... even though you of course CAN, is it worth asking where the decision is actually coming from? Is that you, or some perceptual distortion that you’ve picked up and are imposing on your most true self?
And if I further your law of beauty = harmony... I would say in the same light that True Beauty = Integrity.
    Great content, thanks again.

    • @elyssa_aesthetic
      @elyssa_aesthetic  3 года назад +2

Omg this comment is everything and perfectly sums up exactly what I was trying to point out here. And the True Beauty = Integrity is (chef kiss) 👌🏻
That’s exactly what I was kind of dancing around here.....that you can choose what’s right for you but I highly encourage that it comes from a place of honesty. And there is such a thing as harmony/authenticity through self expression, but beauty can easily become diluted when one *gratuitously* calls something self expression. It’s like not all self expression is authentic, but all authenticity is self expression (I was guilty of doing this myself at one point). It’s a fine line and the crux of it is honesty and, like you said, integrity.
Thanks for commenting!!! This was a good one!!

Could you do a video that incorporates the concepts of skin undertones and the color theory in Depth vs. Weightlessness?

to me personally, the most important things to start admiring my own beauty were to look at myself objectively (with no society weights), and to keep in mind that que cathegories that we use to better understand the bodies are very fluid in real life and not as exact.

I adore your channel! Can you please do a video about Japanese aesthetic? I think it has a lot to offer aspecially to gamines:) ( there are several style trends, but i often see an amazing ability to make the looser fitted styles compliment a dainty and small gamine frame, it is somewhat a paradox)

As a person with professional background in fashion the industry, I will be the harsh one here. Yes, fashion is and should be a form of self expression. Yes, there is not a single standard of beauty, as there are many stories we wanna personify and personas we would like to paint ourselves as. Still, when you come to the point that you want to take real money from people for fashion advice, you should exemplify that by all means - being the person that people look at and can't stop themselves from commenting: ,,how tf she can make *that* outfit work so well for her? It's not my style, not my taste, not my preferences, but on her it looks just...wow." I met such personas, they are personified visual pleasure to look at, no matter how not our taste their style is. And as much as I cheer on your enthusiasm and eagerness, I just don't think you are at the professional level of creating one's personal image just yet. Learn your lines. Learn your patterns. Learn your best hairstyle. Learn how to do your eyebrows so that they fit your face. Find your own unique voice in your clothes. Make your own style pop so that people can't take their eyes out of you. Enjoy the journey of finding yourself in fashion. Only after then start taking money for advising other people. Trust me, the advice you give will then be so much more on point.

How does one "learn" the elements, to give advice? Which school, program, or person, do you contact? Just curious.

It's comments like this that make me really sick of the internet. Elyssa has helped me and many others to find a style that is realistic for my budget and taste. Not everyone wants to be a "fashionista" and wear the most expensive or trendiest of clothes. Some of us just want to learn about cuts, body types and how I can improve my wardrobe because let's face it, fashion is 100% objective. For you, a so called "professional" to come on here and judge someone based on their appearance because they aren't put together enough to your standards is just rude honestly. If you don't want her services, move along but to come here and say she doesn't deserve to build her business because she doesn't look like what you want her to is gross. Clearly, the whole point of the video went right over your head.

Does everyone need to be excellent? No. A lot of us will be just mediocre. And that's fine. But if you tell an average person that he/she is excellent, they will never improve. If you tell them what to improve, they will improve and they may actually become excellent. There's a difference between bullying and being honest. In western, especially US, there's this weird tendency to tell everyone that they are excellent. Well, not everyone is. And there is nothing wrong with that. But if you don't realise the areas in which you are lacking, you will keep being stagnant, then there's no space for improvement. Think of the hairdressers. There are a lot of them that are giving very avrage hairstyles, and they have clients, and those clients are happy, because they hairdresser is nice to them and makes them feel good. And then you have a whole town of women with badly done higlights or yellow hair instead of cool blonde. And no one realises that, because no one holds anyone to high standards. They are stagnant there. Is that really what you want? A hairdresser who has badly done highlights and doesn't realise that will not be an excellent hairdresser, no matter what her clients say. But the moment the hairdresser realises there's something wrong with the highlights, only then she/he has a chance to change that and improve, and become excellent. And yes, there are actually schools and programmes for that, ones that teach Art, Fashion, Proportions, Aesthetics. Excellent ones. Or we can just pat everyone on the head and say: ,,Yes, that's excellent, you tried and that's what counts, I'm sure one day you will become the next top fashion stylist Becky, just keep doing what you are doing". That would be a lie not benefiting any party.

Anna, I feel like there is some truth to your comments. As someone who has had many hair stylists do highlights, you are right, they aren't all good at it. In Tim Gunn's book he referenced that American women prefer " niceness" over substance, versus european women. Elyssa, strikes me as someone who would find all opinions interesting. Fun dialogue to follow.

@@AnnaAnna-fz5hz But you aren't critiquing her work with her clients, you are critiquing her, specifically. And saying that she doesn't fit your ideal beauty standards so she can't possibly be good at her job is asinine. Can everyone improve? Of course, but you are literally only commenting because you don't like the way SHE looks not because you have seen client transitions and thought "wow that was bad fashion advice." If you want to disagree with her other videos on what clothes do or do not work for certain body types then go right ahead, but saying she is "taking money" from clients when YOU don't think she is qualified is just being a troll. Want to be productive here? offer resources, links, articles etc. but don't come here to be holier than thou especially on a video that is intended to spread positivity and encouragement. What Elyssa provides is so much more than "fashion advice" and if you watched any of her other videos or followed her on any social platforms you would know that.
