This song means so much to me. My parents used to sing this as a duet, my dad on lead and momma on high harmony! When they divorced, I was 16, and i knew I'd never hear it again. My mom now has lung cancer and can no longer sing but as we both are standing here listening to that song...her high harmony came back out!
This song reminded of yrs prior when I had a conversation with my husband. He basically said these words as in early 80s I wanted to go to nursing. He'd rather have me at hm. I knew I had a dream and needed reassurance. He would help me achieve this dream. So many yrs later this came out. It's what my husband did hhe gave me wings and I took off flying with his and our daughters help. This song always reminds me of that journey we took together!❤❤❤
I sang this song in karaoke in London and shocked an entire audience. They had never heard it, and I made so many friends just knowing how to sing this song. I must credit Michael Johnson for his genuine, heartfelt songwriting, masterful guitar playing and fantastic baritone.
Another great, beautiful song from the 80's. I really miss this kind of music. Also, I'm so sad to hear that Michael Johnson recently passed. He had a unique, yet beautiful, smooth voice. He will definitely be missed. :(

Say prayers with his songs so he may here you in Heaven. - 7-25-2017 he went to sing his catalog to a place with greater acoustics. Play his songs often.
Me too!!! It's crazy that I haven't heard this song in probably well over 10-15 years, yet I still remember the words as if were yesterday. However, even though I loved this song as a child, I think my adult self loves it even more. Beautiful lyrics!
He didn't write it. Don Schlitz and Rhonda Kye Fleming wrote this song. It's not anyone's fault but it sucks how the real songwriters never get credited enough. Only in music this happens.
It was the Billboard Hot Country Singles number-one single on January 10, 1987 and was also the Billboard Hot Country Songs number-one single of the YEAR in 1987. One "could" say it was not a huge hit for Michael Johnson if you were to only consider royalties. ALL PERFORMANCE copyright royalties for ALL radio airplay went to songwriters Rhonda Fleming, Don Schlitz and their publishers. He did make MECHANICAL royalties for sales of albums, but "Wings" only hit #27, highest of any of his releases
been to over 300 concerts but this man was the real deal just him his guitar we set and had a few drinks before the show not many times that happens he sounded just like he did on vinyle in person bob morgret
@Dr. Musica this was a hit for him in 1986...it's one of my favorite songs of all time..glad i could share it for others to hear..i was surprised to see that it's been viewed over twenty thousand times :)
And this week marks the thirty year anniversary for "Give Me Wings" by Michael Johnson as the top number one song on the United States of America BILLBOARD entertainment magazine 'Hot Country Singles' chart.. :-]
On this day in 1987 {January 4th} "Give Me Wings" by Michael Johnson peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot Country Singles* chart... "Give Me Wings" reached #3 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart... Between 1986 and 1989 the Alamosa, Colorado native had eight records on the Hot Country Singles chart, five made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, the above "Give Me Wings" and "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder" for one week in May of 1987... Besides his two #1 records, his other three Top 10 records were "Crying Shame" {#4 in 1987} "I Will Whisper Your Name" {#9 in 1988}, and "That's That" {#9 in 1988} Michael Jay Johnson passed away at the age of 72 on July 25th, 2017... May he R.I.P. * And from the 'For What It's Worth' department, the remainder of the Hot Country Singles' Top 10 on January 4th, 1987: At #2. "What Am I Gonna Do About You" by Reba McEntire #3. "Cry Myself To Sleep" by The Judds #4. "Love's Gonna Get You Someday" by Ricky Skaggs #5. "Then It's Love" by Don Williams #6. "Fallin' For You For Years" by Conway Twitty #7. "Half Past Forever (Till I'm Blue In The Heart)" by T.G. Sheppard #8. "You Still Move Me" by Dan Seals #9. "She Thinks That She'll Marry" by Judy Rodman #10. "Leave Me Lonely" by Gary Morris
My niece, Terri Watson Wear, sang this at my wedding at my request. I have always been the kind of person that hated to be held down. I know it will come hard for her but at the time of my passing I have requested she sing this again for me. Love You T.
A #1 hit for Michael Johnson on the Country & Western charts. It was the 837th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It was also the first new #1 C&W song of 1987, knocking off Hank Williams, Jr. (Mind Your Own Business). 1986 is history and we are now in 1987. What will the C&W scene be like in the new year? Stay tuned.
Pat Pattison brought me here to observe the excellent use of perspective and rhyme scheme in the lyrics, but I was taken in by the beautiful late-80s country-pop production. Great vocals and mix. Awesome writing for piano and guitar. I love the musical accents put on the lines of the chorus "ForGET... HOW to SING"... and how the first line "If you love me" is used to gather up the storm that's released on the followup (and title lyrics), "Give me wings." Song form is bone-stock pop song: Verse 1 - Prechorus 1 - Chorus - Verse 2 - Prechorus 2 - Chorus - Bridge - Chorus (with a fake-out cadence for one last partial repeat), and it works great. My only misgivings are about the weak-feeling drum beat - the rim tap not my first choice, I keep hoping for some solid snare hits. OK, there we go, final chorus they show up... nice :)
I.really love this song the first time i.heard it was when i moved bk.to nebraska and I've always loved the song and id like to.dedicate it to a very special person in my life and his name is Steven so.honey this song goes out to u ok love u lots

Goodbye Michael! Some don't appreciate your original music when you sing it, but some never were taught right - they like banjos too! Right!! LOL I'll think of you every time I hear banjo jokes. He asked her, what gifts can I bring you
To prove that my love for you is true
I want to make you mine forever
There's nothing on this earth I would not do
She said, anything I've wanted
You have given willingly
So now there's only one more thing I need
If you love me, give me wings
And don't be afraid if I fly
A bird in a cage will forget how to sing
If you love me, give me wings
He walked over to the window
He silently stared into space
Then he said, well I just want to protect you
'Cause this world is a dangerous place
She put her arms around him
She said, I know you mean well
But there are lessons I must learn for myself
So if you love me, give me wings
And don't be afraid if I fly
A bird in a cage will forget how to sing
And you can trust me, so give me wings
She said, up above the clouds, you can see forever
And I know you and I can learn to fly together
If you love me, give me wings
Don't be afraid if I fly
A bird in a cage will forget how to sing
And you can trust me, so give me wings
If you really love me
Give me wings

This is one of the most beautiful songs in the world, if not the most beautiful.
1986 and 1987 these were the last good years for country music, and that song was one of the best that year.the album was a diamond. Amazing 80s!
Me too!!! It's crazy that I haven't heard this song in probably well over 10-15 years, yet I still remember the words as if were yesterday. However, even though I loved this song as a child, I think my adult self loves it even more. Beautiful lyrics!

Great song and a great singer. Where did Nashville put them all. Not much greatness coming out of that town anymore.

Beautiful song. Never heard it before
I've always liked Michael Johnson quite a bit, but have never heard this song. Because when it was popular the local stations never played it.

This here's a sad one. But it has a point to it. If your love wants out, you gotta love him/her enough to let him/her go.
Give me wings Rick.I love you
Songwriter(s): co written by Don Schlitz one of the best!!

I wish Spotify had this version the original song
I didn't know he had passed. Maybe I'll see him later. RIP.

Am i the only one old enough to remember this as Patch and Kaylas from Days of our Lives?
I remember this song from Days of our Lives. Justin sang it to Adrienne. That was 30 years ago, before the internet, so I'm glad to hear it again. I like Justin's version better. LOL

He's an awesome singer, I don't know why I've never heard of him before, is he a new singer?
When it's time to let go that's the hardest thing to do

This is a motherf**ing brilliant composition. It's not just beautiful & awesomely orchestrated. There are few male people who can write with a decent enough understanding of the feminine perspective. Historically Benjamin Franklin was one, and whoever the guy who wrote Lorrie Morgan's hit 'What part of No Don't you Understand is another.
RIP
This was never a hugh hit but I always loved this song.
Dummy
Hilary and Robert, I will always love you always will, always will.

That’s a weird way to ask, what sauce do you want for your wings
This is for my Daughter.
Mine too. Just turned 16 and wants to conquer the world.
mine as well. She died...never give up on your children. What remains is living hell
I'm so sorry for your loss.
My wife got me hooked on soap operas and i can still see justin keriokis singing to patch's sister. Not real good at remembering all the names, anybody who watched days of our lives in the 80's know them.
Lyrics
He asked her, what gifts can I bring you
To prove that my love for you is true
I want to make you mine forever
There's nothing on this earth I would not do
She said, anything I've wanted
You have given willingly
So now there's only one more thing I need
If you love me, give me wings
And don't be afraid if I fly
A bird in a cage will forget how to sing
If you love me, give me wings
He walked over to the window
He silently stared into space
Then he said, well I just want to protect you
'Cause this world is a dangerous place
She put her arms around him
She said, I know you mean well
But there are lessons I must learn for myself
So if you love me, give me wings
And don't be afraid if I fly
A bird in a cage will forget how to sing
And you can trust me, so give me wings
She said, up above the clouds, you can see forever
And I know you and I can learn to fly together
If you love me, give me wings
Don't be afraid if I fly
A bird in a cage will forget how to sing
And you can trust me, so give me wings
If you really love me
Give me wings
