  • Hi, my name is Dan Cummings. @Bombersgarage
Please share the proudest moment of my life as I put together the perfect day to reveal 2 custom built cars I spent the better part of a year building in secrecy.
Long story short, My mother and I put together a plan to steal my step fathers 1972 Pontiac Catalina Convertible and completely restore it as a surprise. He only knew that we had taken the car. He had no idea where, or when he would get it back. The car meant the world to him as his grandparents had given it to him shortly before their passing. We had driven the car for years before time had taken its toll. I grew up riding in, and eventually learning to drive in this car. In this video, he has NO IDEA what he is walking into when we reveal his car to him. He thought he was meeting a childhood friend, (who was in on the secret) downtown Lincoln, NE at the newly built rail yard next to the Pinnacle Bank Arena. I rented out the space so that many could join and witness the hard work put into showing the appreciation we had for him. Only thing was, is that I had another secret I held for months. The whole time my mom and I were building his car, I was also building her, her favorite car. Both were completely in shock that day. Im grateful that no one had a heart attack. I hope this video inspires people to step out of their comfort zone and do something great for someone else. It was a great feeling. Months of blood sweat and tears turned into one of the most touching things i've ever been a part of. My name is Dan. These are the most loving parents anyone could ever ask for. Today is the day that I pay them back. Please enjoy

Amazed by the finished car? Absolutely. Thank you will never be enough.

That was an awesome video and it looked like ALOT of love and showing of thanks went into that build for you. Gentry, your selfless acts, love, and support were rewarded in the build of the car that you loved so much by the people that you've worked so hard to support. I'm happy for you, and I'm sure that you deserved this. Enjoy it buddy.

Best son and wife ever. I give my Dad a lot of grief. My dad love to fly so unless i win the lottery or get a better job (I work for him) I won't be building him a plane. I do have a new goal in life, to have a wife and son that love me this much. Gentry you must be a great father and husband keep up the good work.

Well I' a hardened man 72, and I can't put into words what that young but full grown man has done for his family. I listened close, they are family, I remember the tv having a article on this, well this time I cried with mom and my heart bout leaped out when he did the second revile as it was no small task. I'm proud how he pushed his mom into her new level of confidence. Epic!

I thought I'd take a minute to respond to all the comments everyone has left me over the past months. I apologize that I don't get much free time to do so. It's absolutely heart warming and humbling to see all the love we've received from the experience. I even enjoy reading the negative posts! Can't please everyone...haha! I'm very glad some of my fellow body men will critique some of the things they see in the video. I take all criticism constructively, knowing that the video doesn't really tell much of the story behind the actual build of the car. I realize that we all have different ways of doing things. I still learn from my older coworkers everyday. I'm definitely not perfect, but I did the best with what I could. As many body men know, we aren't the wealthiest people in the world. My family isn't wealthy. We have no inheritance or lump sums coming our way. I built it based on the very little budget I had to work with. I spent the bigger money on areas that needed it most.

    • @Bombersgarage
      @Bombersgarage  8 лет назад +45

Unfortunately, they made no reproduction parts or sheet metal. I had to wing it in some cases. The Catalina just isn't one of your most popular cars to rebuild. Most wouldn't put the money into it. It, however, was special enough to my father that I was going to do anything to make it work. The ONLY reproduction quarter panel we could find just happened to be a little less in quality. I know that I could have made my own but based on the very short time frame I had to work with, I had to make a sacrifice. I assure you, though, that I put A LOT of time in metal work on those panels. It's not full of filler. I lost a lot of sleep on them. I spent a long time building high dollar street rods, but unfortunately wasn't able to afford or apply some of those things to this build. It was more about making something life changing for my family. After all of this happened, I'm confident in saying that it did just that. My parents are loving life and enjoying everything about the cars.

    • @Bombersgarage

The smiles on their faces and endless story telling of the builds were enough to bring us even closer. I am proud that they are proud. Also, I apologize that RUclips had an issue with one of the songs we used, and removed a portion of the audio. We checked copyright laws and didn't think there would be any issues, especially since I don't want to make any money off of the video. That was never my point on this. I just wanted to tell everyone our story. But hey, it's still a cool video. I'll be loading another version of the video soon. We are putting in another song where the other was deleted. Thank you very much for all the kind words. I will be taking on a new and bigger donation project shortly. I will do something similar to be able to show you the fun along the way. I appreciate all your support and check back soon for the new project I'll be raffling away for charity.

+Dan Cummings It doesn't matter HOW you did it,the only thing that counts are the fact that YOU DID IT..(with help off course;D)
The fact that the Pontiac isn't the most popular model is not importend. The story behind it and making your family happy is the most importend thing. And the cars are stunning.!!!

+M Slagter Pontiac has and will always be the sexy Chevy... I miss my 78 G-body.. I think most people miss the point of Chevy was the leader little bolder etc, Pontiac was more rounded and sexy , Buick was the red headed pissed off step child always flexing, and Olds was the lay back poor mans Cadillac... Why Chevy was killing ford for the longest time since they had 4 cars and styles but 80% parts were the same...

I want to say something. Ive watched this vid now and then, especially when i feel low and wrapped up in my own bad crap. Thats a helluva family and kid. Forget the car, in fact i really dont look at the car. Look at their character. Who wouldnt want them as a neighbor? Who wouldnt trust them with their life? This kid restores faith in what we've forgotten about each other, about who we are and what we really can do. Bravo to all of you!

My kids are in their mid 30's and are succeeding beyond their mother an my wildest dreams. We sacrifice so much for our kids it is wonderful when they show their appreciation. Watching my grandkids succeed, thanks to their parents (my kids) is just the frosting on the cake. If you can't make your "million" by age 40 please make sure your kids do, and their kids after them. When I pass on I can KNOW that I left the World better than I found it. What a great kid in this video!!

Being in the auto restoration business over 40 years, I pick these type videos apart..
But I must say, this kid knows his shit. He kept a fine eye to small details, to an almost insane perfection lvl, which is the difference between a good resto, and a great resto. This from what I can see is a great one.. I did raise an eyebrow when I saw the heat warps, in the lower quarter splice, but hey, nothing is perfect.
Great Job kid, made your dad proud.

Dan Cummings You can never really make an old car with body rust or missing metal "new" again....you do the best you can within sanity and your budget to make yourself happy.... and have a decently drivable, good looking example of what the car was in its prime...
For some people, the PROCESS of doing it is the joy, for others its having a tangible connection to treasured memories of the past you can sit in, close your eyes, and be there again....
A kid at the drive-in on his dads lap, a teenager cruising, a father with his young family on their first vacation...having the skills to roll up your sleeves and DO it, just adds another dimension...
There is a phrase "greater than the sum of its parts" and youre there man...
      Thanks for sharing this!!

Thank you so much for making the video. I cried because of the love in your family. I did a very small restoration of a 1959 Cheve Biscayne with my daughter. I drug it home from a field and we bonded over that car. We took our auto body class in 1980. There was a Hippy gal in the class fixing her Jeep. Then there we were, a 46 year old mom with a 16 year old daughter. What memories. Thank you so much for bringing it back to me. We didn't need to do the complete take-it-all apart job you did. It would have been beyond us and it wasn't really that needed. My hat is off to you and your mom. What a wonderful person you are.

This is such an inspirational story. I also work at BNSF, Engineer in Galesburg, il. The amount of our lives spent away limits our ability to do anything outside of the very essentials most of the time. For him to do the amount of work that was done with his schedule would be unknown. I applaud the effort and reasons behind it. To be a railroader isn't just to have a job, it's a way of life, it consumes you, i commend you for that alone. Those 2 people responsible for the build understand your sacrifice throughout your career, most wouldn't recognize it. The car looks awesome, and i have to admit i had a tear or 2 in my eyes as well. I have a 66 ford Galaxie. I know nobody will do for me what was done for you. You have some special people around you. I loved the video on a variety of levels. Thanks for giving me a little motivation to get out there and start wrenchin. Take care.

I don't know anything about restoring cars but do know a little about restoring families. To see what this young man did out of true respect for someone simply to say thank you is truly heart warming. Too many kids have no clue or understanding of how their parents sacrifice for them. Many kids blame their parents for what they didn't do without even noticing what they did do for them. Dan, you are a special guy and I understand there are many like you out there that do things quietly for the ones they love. You and the others like you help many of us keep the faith in our young people that respect and thankfulness has not totally faded away. Cars are bought and sold everyday but families are forever!

My daughter get my old bird she love it as much as me guess in heaven I might see my dream rolling again. It brought many tears to me not able to start her up and drive her. Been a teenage dream to have a firebird and I fight hard to keep my dream.

I understand how a car builder would view something like this from his perspective, but the real story here is not the car at all but the beautiful display of love that comes from a grateful heart.I spent 30 years in prison for making poor stupid decisions, but at some point in my life I began to understand that the greatest happiness in life doesnt come from money but from love. And what a blessing you are to do this for your Mom and "Dad". Thank you for sharing such a beautiful moment. God Bless You and your family, By the way, great car! :)
