  • WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT WYOMING?
It's not enough to say wide-open spaces and not so many people. What defines those who flout the high winds and low opinions of outsiders to remain here? Our official motto is "Equal Rights". Sometimes we call ourselves "The Cowboy State." But how do those self-proclaimed descriptions match up to reality? We'll hear from dozens of Wyomingites on what they like and dislike about this place, and about what makes it, in the words of a state road sign: "Like no place on Earth".

It is a unique state. For us who are Europeans it is probably a very "stereotypical" US State. It is very difficult to understand the mentality especially if you are not American but if you know a couple of things you can make sense. They call it independence and individuality and "do not tell us what to do". Some people would call it individualism, selfishness and "i do not care about other people's welfare". Well, it is not selfishness. It is just what the US is about. And it s working. Because I have never seen millions of people leaving the US because they are unhappy. So "it is good to live in Wyoming". Good luck!!

Each and ever time I have been to Wyoming I catch myself trying to scheme a way to get my wife to move there....Love the people, love the hunting and love the laid back way of life. On a side note, I think our whole country could learn some very valuable lessons from ranchers as it relates to being frugal and hard work as well.

I lived in Rawlins and Cheyenne for over 2 years between 2007-2009 . As a guy from Turkey, I was never ever discriminated against and always given equal opportunities and social and professional environment. Which is something you cannot easily receive in Europe, which talks so much about liberal values but never applies the foreigners. Wyoming is where true American values are alive and lived !

I had wanted to see Montana since I was 17. I’m 22 now and had forgotten about it but in May of this year I decided to go to South Dakota and from there meandered into Wyoming. It’s now my goal to move and start a life there in that beautiful state. True freedom away from politics and city life.

we travel to WY every year from new england, it is big sky country for sure ,seems like the state has so much to offer from the national grasslands to yellowstone giving a person so many places to live if they so wish. yes it is cold and windy in winter but try living in alaska at 50 below an 4 hrs of daylight in the winter. WY is just a natural wonderland oeace and quiet and good ole home town feeling.

Wyoming also has a seriously low crime rate. Some say it’s because with so few people everyone knows everyone else. Others say its because Wyoming has the highest rate of gun ownership in all of America and also the world lol.
I like to think it’s a bit of both lol
So if you move to Wyoming don’t bring your big city politics with you. We want Wyoming to stay just the way it is. Cheers

Speaking about preferential bids, they are set up the way they are in order to keep big companies from snatching up all the grazing rights simply because they have huge amounts of money. It means smaller ranchers have a fair chance at having grazing rights. Giving everything to the highest bidder isn’t always the best way of doing something. Everything in life shouldn’t always be about money.

Maybe the ranchers should get more farm aid all the farmers in the other states do ; they got new homes new equipment and 3 or 4 new trucks and cars. Of course this is paid for by tax dollars and sort of a welfare program if you think about it. Your crop fails the Government pays you anyway How can you loose.

I'm a 4 the generation rancher I ranch the same ranch my great grandfather staked out before Wyoming was a state we still live in the same house that was builtn in 1875 and completed in 1903 it was built from lumber on the ranch every board is off this property we still use equipment I learned on as a child even though we do have some newer equipment 30+ years old our feed truck is the same one that has been here since the 50's as well as our small cattle truck also more than 59 years old as to pick ups yes I have a newer one for trips a 05 other than that the daily trucks are late 60's very early 70's and two that are older than. My wife has a garden in the summer and we hunt deer and elk for our winter meat as well as a trout stream that runs through the property. We have had good years we have had bad years even some we didn't think we would recover from but we have held it together tightened our belts when we have had to and celebrated the good years . We have not ever files for any bad year we were not raised that way. We are not rich in money but I wouldn't trade this life for anything I get to work with my family and raise another generation of people that take pride in the land they work some days you freeze some days you burn up but it is our piece of heaven with out hand outs ever we have been the lucky ones I don't personally know any that would enjoy taking money from the government just because of the stigma that goes with it as you have expressed I'm not criticizing I'm just saying sometimes a bad year you do need help we have been lucky and yes some do exploited but not all of us so not a attack on you but not all of us would go that route
