Generally speaking, the western part of the state is more shielded from wind due to the terrain (Rockies, Tetons, etc.), but if you don't like wind it's probably best to avoid places on the open plains or like Laramie, which sits in a wide valley that acts as a sort of natural wind tunnel. Fun fact, Wyomingites are so used to near constant wind that when it drops, the suicide rate spikes.

    In my experience driving through Wyoming, the best advice you provided is to stop for gas whenever you see a station. We drove from southern Utah thorough Wyoming; our destination was the Tetons. By chance, I stopped for gas and filled up in a small town. Thank goodness I did! We drove for hours and never saw a car, a home, a cow...nothing but signs that said “Free range.” Never saw even a chicken but wondered “where would they even come from?” After 6 hours, we saw one gas station that had a small store and bunks and showers in the back. We coasted in on fumes! I was never so happy to see a gas station in my life!

    I'm a lifelong resident of Wy. The gas warnings are absolutely legitimate. Through my 37 years in the Casper area, I have come across 3 out of staters that were blindly following their GPS units and heading into unmaintained roads during our winter season. These roads can go months without any traffic, if you get stuck in snow or mud you may be faced with 20 - 50 mile walks out (With no cell signal) or possibly weeks to months before anyone else drives that road. Those 3 cars were lucky that I was in the area with my winch, shovels, tow straps and shackles to recover their vehicles (all front wheel drive cars) from the snow and mud, (as well as my winter survival preps like, water, food, blankets and satellite communications that I carry in my truck year round). Be very careful about your route, GPS has proven to take unsuspecting drivers down very rural, unmaintained roads with extremely low travel during our bad seasons.

A little bit of that is because they're so much more liberal than the rest of the state (Pindale, on of the small towns below J-hole, actually call it Little California, and that's not a term of endearment here) but in general a lot of the towns are very territorial toward each other because they're so small and the space between so large

    A few more "don'ts": 1. Don't think that you can drink or party at high altitude the way you can near sea level. Alcohol will hit you much faster at high altitude.
    2. Don't mis-pronounce place names. Towogatee Pass is Tow-ga-tee Pass. The town of Dubois is Dew-boyz, not Du-Bwah. The Popoagie River is the po-PO-shah.
    3. Don't be surprised or alarmed if you see someone carrying a gun. You won't see it on every corner but it does happen. Wyoming has the highest per capita rate of gun ownership of any state (although I don't know how they calculate that since there is no gun registration in WY). Also, many people hunt and eat wild game. Some school districts cancel school on the opening day of deer/antelope/elk season because most of the boys and many of the girls won't be there anyway.
    4. Don't forget to pack snacks and drinks in the car. It is sometimes a long way between towns.
    5. Don't just speed through on the way to the Tetons or Yellowstone. Stop and ask a random local what there is to see and do nearby. You'll end up seeing some very cool thngs that most tourists do not get to see.
    6. Don't ignore the comments in the video about the wind, particularly if you have or are pulling a high profile vehicle. It can be brutal.

    Great advice about visiting our beautiful state! I live in the SW corner (Rock Springs/Green River area) and we have amazing outdoor areas like Flaming Gorge, sand dunes, and wild horse trails! Some other DON'TS to consider about Wyoming... 1. DON'T ignore the signage. We have a lot of variable speed signs (because of weather/wind), and lots of DOT signs warning travelers of road conditions. Please follow them for your safety and others. 2. DON'T forget to stop by each town's Chamber of Commerce and get a really cool travel sticker from that area. Wyoming Travel and Tourism has an awesome stick campaign and I highly suggest checking it out. As a local, I love collecting the stickers and I'm almost done with my collection. 3. DON'T rush things! I think I collected something like 22 different stickers, but there are still a few I didn't get. Many of the "sticker stops" offered multiple sticker designs, but would often only give out one per visit. This necessitated making two or more stops at some locations. It's now 2022, and I'm not sure if the sticker campaign is still going, but if it is, it's a fun way to learn about what the state has to offer.

    I learned from personal experience how valuable this gentleman's advice is. When I was a five year old boy in 1953 my Dad took Mom, my grandparents and I on a trip to Wyoming. We couldn't find a vacant motel room in or near Dubois and ended up sleeping in our car parked on the other side of the street from the local police station. Men in cowboy hats entered and departed from the station every so often all night long. I vividly remember waking up at dawn with the sky blazing fiery red. On a later trip I took in 1978 I left my motel in Rawlins low on gas and headed north, thinking there'd be a filling station just north of town. I drove and drove ... and drove ... until my car was running on vapor. To my great relief I finally found gas in a place called Muddy Gap. I swore I'd never do THAT again!

    I was born in Wyoming and spent my childhood there. Love the country out there. Had to laugh at your description of how talkative the locals are, because that fits my dad to the tee. He will start a conversation with anybody, and he's generally super helpful to everyone. I know for a fact from experience (both ways) that people in Wyoming will drive an hour out of their way to help someone who's stranded, etc. Or at least they did when I was a kid. Cell phones may have changed the equation since then.

    As a long time Wyoming local, who only recently moved to North Dakota, I love this video, it's like going home. But I might mention that one of the true hidden gems that you may want to check out is a place called South Fork which can be accessed in Cody. Also when traversing the state from Southeast to Northwest a run through Wind River Canyon just outside Thermopolis is well worth the experience.

I have a pro-tip for when you’re traveling through Wyoming, especially for when you’re in Yellowstone or other areas without reliable cell phone service. Be sure to bring some nice walkie talkie type radios with you. We have found this particularly helpful when we travel with several cars. We can stay in constant contact with our travel companions. It’s also great for when you’re traveling with children. It’s easy to get separated and having radios helps immensely on trails or even in souvenir shops. Make sure you get the kind with at least a 5 mile range because with all the mountains and hills, it shortens the range to probably more around 2 miles.

    Last time I was in Yellowstone it snowed. On July 4th.
    Bison and elk should never be fed to tourists. They will not be able to go back to beef when they get home.
    A few years ago there was a proposal to add cell towers in Yellowstone. Made me sick. Turn off the phone and enjoy the massive beauty.
    Airports out west don't have wind socks. They have wind chains. You get used to hooking your foot under the car door when you open it to keep the wind from breaking it off the hinges.

    Wyoming's two nicest areas are around Lander and around Sheridan, but there are long stretches of bareness here as well. This bareness is, in large part, because it's cheaper to build and maintain roads in the bare areas. So, the best way to travel in Wyoming is in a four-wheel-drive vehicle with high clearance. The best sights and landscapes in this state are not in any brochure. Discovery happens by just taking an exit and driving on dirt roads. Don't do this from October through May unless you've been there before, regardless of your vehicle. Random travel on dirt roads is a pastime here, but be completely prepared with tents, food, water, etc.
    I live in Casper and I can easily travel to a place with no humans from where I stand to the horizon in any direction in no more than an hour.
    Cowboy culture is big, but it's not the only culture here. We have a small, but vibrant, arts culture and we have a large oilfield culture. Because of that oilfield culture, it's best to ditch that Southern accent at the state line. It's one of the few things that will get you treated differently here (the history of that is complicated).
    Finally, unless you eat the local fare, which would include steaks and what most people would call southwestern cuisine, it's hard for restaurants or grocery stores to obtain fresh produce. If you're used to living in a city, don't chance anything exotic here unless you're in Jackson (where you will pay for the privilege) or, perhaps, Cheyenne and Laramie (which are close enough to the Colorado supply chains). This is not a gourmet-food destination.
    Anyhow, I like your video. Cheyenne and Jackson are the top tourist-friendly places in the state, but most Wyomingites just never go to either one and wouldn't recommend them. I'm fourth generation in this state and over 50. I do enjoy your European travel videos and have been to many of the places you make videos about since I speak French and German (that I learned in Wyoming schools) and have traveled and lived widely there and the Far East. Many Wyomingites are travelers. I can practice my Mandarin right here in Casper anytime with either native speakers or people who have lived in China and come back. It's the same with French and German. It doesn't look like that on the surface, I know.

    Granted we are a hunting family so the idea of bison or elk or venison isn't strange to hear. The thing is, if people like or even love beef, they will LOVE bison or elk! It's far healthier and way more lean that beef. We've not had beef in our freezer for years and it's rarely we'll have it unless we head out to a steakhouse that doesn't have anything but.
    One of the way's I've found to get converts is to make an elk or bison stew or chili! The guests will think it's beef, they don't find out until after dinner is long over so their head doesn't start playing games with their stomach!

Also if you want to come to wy and you have not had a lot of experience driving on snow and ice only come July August or September. And you still might end up having snow those months. October through basically June is our winter months. If traveling any other times always check road reports and weather. If going over any mountain pass it can be bad weather anytime so always look. Now Wyoming is the least populated of all the states, yep, even Alaska has more people living in it then Wyoming. Altitude wise yes its high and dry, so drink lots of water, and take it easy till you get used to it. As for the town of Jackson, we in Wyoming call it Jackson Hole, and we all know what town is being talked about. As for the valley its in, that's the Snake River Valley. As for roads there aren't many. So you drive on what you have too. This also means that Bicycle's have the same right too all public roads as cars do.

    The first statement is the most relevant since, as with most Westerners, the folks in Wyoming are independent and don’t like someone who has been around for 30 seconds telling us what to do. As they saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. The parts about the weather being changeable and the wind being dangerous is spot on. A few years ago I was hauling a stock trailer carrying horse from Casper back to New Mexico and while it was only breezy in Casper, by the time I was 20 miles north of Wheatland it was blowing 45 miles per hour and gusting to 60. The highway patrol diverted high profile traffic off the highway and I spend four hours in Wheatland waiting to get back on the highway. The folks in Wyoming are awesome and I've always been made to feel like I'm part of big family when I visit my friends in Wyoming.

Today was bright and sunny and 80, tomorrow will be snowy and cold and windy. Even the locals that try to tell other locals what to do will get a cold shoulder here but when we need help in agricultural communities, we put our differences aside to help each other wether we like each other or not and that's something to be said. You might think people here may be unintelligent or stubborn but you have to understand the culture and not many can wrap they're head around it. I guess we just put up with each other but also understand each other's background, that's the best way I can describe it. Wyoming also doesn't plow and de-ice their roads in the winter. Drove from Salt Lake to Denver once. I-80 up to the Wyoming border was plowed, salted, and sanded and you could drive at a normal speed. Cross over into Wyoming and the road turns into a sheet of ice for the next 200 miles. Stopped to get gas and some girl working in the store said basically Wyoming is too cheap to plow their roads.

    • @cutebutsadisticable
      @cutebutsadisticable 3 года назад

      Depends on the part of Wyoming you are in. 287 from Laramie to Colorado is plowed and 80 all around Laramie is kept plowed but around Elk Mountain isn't and parts past Cheyenne aren't its also about how fast the snow is falling and the wind is blowing. There are alot variables into the plowing of all the roads.

    • @kleppto9596
      @kleppto9596 3 года назад +2

      It's not that we're too cheap to plow our roads, it's that it's too expensive to have the snowplows running 24/7, because that's what we would need with the wind whipping it all over the place.

    • @ytreece
      @ytreece 3 года назад +1

      @@kleppto9596 I’m glad we don’t salt the roads. Tears up the vehicles. It’s a good idea to have a 4WD though. And we do plow (a little bit 😂).

      Agree with the depends on what part of Wyoming you are in as well as the can’t plow and salt 24/7. I live in northeastern Wyoming and I-90 is plowed regularly but I also use to not live in town (about 14 miles away). I have had to drive into town in the winter to get one of my kids from an after school activity and the roads will have been plowed and sand/salted only to drive back home half an hour later on roads that don’t look like a plow had been on them at all.

    As with a lot of places with national parks and forests, there’s a lot of places where you can camp for free or pretty cheap. Like even if it’s “full” don’t be afraid to go in and ask around the campground because people will probably let you set up next to them if there’s some space.

    Glad to see this vid out. These are things I grew up learning (but I grew up around Ennis and Bozeman, just over the state line LOL).
    That safety stuff is critical, in so many ways. Heck, in the local paper in the summer, there were always stories of tourists who did stupid things. Like the couple who talked their toddler into getting his picture taken "With Yogi Bear", plopped the kid on the bear's back, and watched in horror as the kid was killed. Or the morons who don't think about how unpredictable a bison can be, and walk out into the middle of a herd and set up a tripod to take photos (seen that one myself, on Fountain Flats). Or the spoiled brat who threw their toy away into the Sunset Crater in a tantrum then raged for Dad go fetch it back for them. Didn't care if dad boiled to death long as they got their toy back.
    I'm a senior citizen now, early 70s, I was born when my dad was 50 yrs old. He was a carpenter by trade, and during the depression, in the 30s, he and some of his friends worked those WPA crews that built all those walks for safety in Yellowstone, as well as many other constructed features. So he knew all the safety issues and taught us -- and as a side benefit, he knew all the nifty stuff that was off the main loop that it would be cool to visit.
    Weatherwise, we were the same in Montana. Like the balmy April morning when I was in high school, temps abt 70 when I left to walk to school in a sundress and sandals, clouded over by the time I got there, snow falling by the time home room checkin was done at 8:30, 2 feet on the ground by the time school let out at 3:45. Walked home in sundress and sandals. through that.
    Had to laugh about eateries actually serving Rocky Mountain Oysters. Poor donkeys. Heehawing in soprano just to feed the tourists. 'Course as a kid, my dad used to take an elk every winter, and we used to have "wapiti chops" for dinner when he did.
