      Have you checked to see that your not over or under driving it? I mean you are relying on the Lebanon mechanics to have put in the right size pully for the application. There could be a miss match in pressure between the pump and rack due to it being run too fast or too slow.

    I live with old and semi old Bimmers. I have an early E30 and yeah, 86/87 is when they started to make a lot of mechanical changes on the cars. The late cars only used the in tank pump opposed to the early cars with the lift pump and external pump. As far as the power steering is concerned, something to keep in mind on the reservoirs is that they do have a built in filter in them. They do need periodic replacing.

    Thanks Jared. I've literally replaced hundreds of rack and pinions over the years. But I've never taken the time to pull one apart. The majority of ones I've replaced had the case of morning sickness. Steering has little to no assist when cold. The teflon seals on the control valve would actually wear a groove in the aluminum valve housing. Allowing the fluid to leak past the seals. Once the fluid and the R and P housing warmed up and expanded enough for proper sealing the rack would work as normal. After time the morning sickness would become a permanent issue making replacement a necessity. General Motors and Chrysler were the absolute worst for this issue.

    I'm not a BMW guy, but I am a person who has done questionable things when resurrecting vehicles. For that gas tank, why not take some measurements of the current fuel tank, look through some parts catalogs for a tank that is at least close to the same size and also has the hose connections necessary, then make that new tank fit the car? Or, since you have all of those welding machines, why not look into fabricating your own custom fuel tank with baffles to slow the fuel sloshing while drifting? The fuel tank is essentially just a box with hoses connected to it and a fuel pump dangling inside it.

    • @jwalster9412

      The easiest solution is the do what they have in tanker truck, and divide the tank into smaller connect sections.

  • @802Garage
    @802Garage 2 года назад +2

    Just one idea, could be there is a return line allowing some air in. Subarus have a problem where a loosely clamped power steering return line would allow air to enter the fluid an aerate. Can cause a noisy pump, which makes people think it's bad, when it's just air. Can often go away when warm and all, so maybe that's why yours is intermittent. Basically, air might be getting into the system somewhere. If the fluid is foamy in the reservoir, that would be a key indicator.

    Seeing you tear apart that rack and pinion gear brings back lots of memories! I used to work at TRW Automotive in Atkins VA where they assemble rack and pinion steering gears. I'd check for binding in outer tie rod and suspension. 540i power steeering fluid is Pentosin CHF 11S. I do get power steering whine every couple of years... and draining some old power steering fluid out and putting new fluid solved the whine. So it may be the fluid problem... try a different one if not the 11S fluid.

  • @donaldgers4070
    @donaldgers4070 2 года назад +7

    Well, I noticed a couple of things you might have missed. I think you didn't change PS fluid reservoir. some models and years have internal filters and once they get too old, they will destroy a new system. They'll bleed surplus contaminants into your system when flushed with new fluid.
    As for fluids, I think e46 racks need the euro green hydraulic fluid, instead of ATF, unlike most other BMW models. That may not be doing you any good. however, the v8 the car came out of and its pump might run ATF only. So it might be worth looking into.
    The last thing you probably did off the cam. But IDK maybe you forgot or don't know about it. you are supposed to crank the wheel lock to lock several times. like more times than seems reasonable, if I remember correctly. with the vehicle in the air, off in a bleeding procedure.

    • @wankersonwhisky
      @wankersonwhisky 2 года назад

      He said the reservoir has no blockages so would assume that's not likely to cause the issues he's seeing. e46 used ATF for power steering, it was e90/60 onwards that CHF 11s became the PS fluid - this is an e30(?) so predates e46 chassis.

    • @donaldgers4070
      @donaldgers4070 2 года назад +1

      @@wankersonwhisky I don't think you would see a blockage per say, the filter will still flow. it will just contaminate the fluid and possibly destroy the pump an rack seals down the line. my 2001 325 e46 runs hydraulic fluid in the power steering system not atf.

    I've been driving old German (80s&90s) stuff mainly BMWs for 20+ years, but I only have two words to say. Preventative Maintenance. Keeping a watch on everything that is about wear out or might need attention soon is key and maybe a few trips to the Pull & Save occasionally, but I wouldn't drive anything else. People saying parts are expensive are stupid because if you know where to look you can get wholesale prices just buy good OEM type quality parts. You should've gone with a Z3 rack for that E30 because they are way faster, but that car is def cobbled together. Personally, I think drift cars are dumb.

    hey Jerrad,
    the older bmws are easier than the newer ones :) I had an e30 project car as well as wrx wagon (blobeye). for the fuel pump, you can also get a walbro 255 lph from ebay and put that in the stock bracket. also be careful of rubber couplings getting destroyed by ethanol, (ask me how I know) so get some ethanol safe couplers. I haven't had power steering issues with my e30, but did with one of my subarus, I ended up flushing the system by removing the return line to the reservoir and putting it in a bucket and kept filling the reservoir with new fluid as the engine is running and turn the wheel from full lock to full lock to get all the old fluid out and any air bubbles stuck in the system and my whine went away after that. I hope that helps. for the rear trailing arms, I think AKG makes eccentric bushings that gives you some adjustment on the camber and toe. Also for engine cooling, upgrade to metal parts like all aluminum radiator and metal tstat housing if yours is plastic, and water pump with metal impeller. Stewart Components makes a high performance water pump for the straight 6 motors but does look like for the BMW v8s but I would suggest looking into that. you can also probably get a lower temp tstat to open up sooner to help keep Temps lower especially when drifting. Just some thoughts, hope it helpful.

    I am wrenching on a late e36 BMW, I was putting a OBD1 engine in, but since I've had so much trouble getting it to just crank, I'm considering splurging on a speeduino to replace the DME, if you want tunability, speeduino is a good option

    Doing a e23 same deal. New parts don’t work, some things are cheap, some are outrageous. It’s unreal. Did a similar fuel pump mod as you except I put a racing pump in the tank and eliminated the external. The rubber hose you reused blew out. Then every other hose blew out so I cad to braise on a smaller nipple and finally got it to not burst the pump. All that took two pumps, first one was bad and replacement of every single soft line in the car before it finally ram right. BMW.

    for a drift car its good to have small fire extinguisher behind the seat or in passengers side since the engines tend to get hot and occasionally catch on fire

    It is always difficult when multiple problems arise at the same time. My Car had a Water pump and timing chain set replaced the week of Roadkill Nights. It got me through the weekend and died the next week. There was an oil leak from the shop's work and they replaced the alternator killed by leaking oil and fixed the problem free of charge. There are still issues, but one step at a time. Maintenance is important and Wrenching Everyday sometimes is a necessary task. 😏👍

    Jared, I have 9 old BMW's 3, 5 and 7series and they all suffer the same fate, if you don't drive them often enough the fuel pumps just die! Buy the aftermarket pump only and do what you did and always keep a spare pump. Your steering whine is as another commenter says it's just air in the system, have someone work the wheel side to side slowly and bleed the pressured side of the rack a couple of times.

    Just a mental image but the E30 would be much improved by spacing the rear wheels out and fitting an E30 M3 Evolution replica bodykit 🙂 The stacked trunk lid and rear spoiler from the M3 Evo would be the icing on the cake 😎 Would no doubt make wall-tapping less appealing though 😆 Hi from Blighty; love your work 🤟🏼

    I redid a power steering system recently. New pump all that and had a worse whine than the old system. Turns our I had a bad seal between the pump and the intake hose. It was sucking air into the fluid so I could never get all the air out. Mine had an o-ring that once I replaced the air bubbles went away and all the noise is now gone.

  • @KatanaGuy
    @KatanaGuy 2 года назад

    PS whine brings back so many bad memories. Did you replace the reservoir and low pressure lines? A small pinhole leak will allow just a bit of air in. check the reservoir for any frothing as well.

    Been there done that, I used to replace the pump or rack separately then had to do the other 3-10 months later. After doing that a few times I started replacing them as a pair and flushing the hell out of the lines. Never had an issue on my cars since.
    You're whine is probably because when that bad pump was on the new rack it put crap through it. It's basically impossible to get out again and the damage happens in an instant. If you have to do it again just do them both at the same time, that's the only way I've had success.
