- Marina life: Almerimar, the winter paradise of the Mediterranean sailor.
This week’s episode is brought to you by a little bit of boredom.
Ryan being gone, I find myself alone in Almerimar again, where Polar has been docked since November.
In this video, you follow me on a day in Almerimar, the winter paradise of the Mediterranean sailor.
We take a tour of Almerimar marina, visit the surrounding area on a run, go to the marina office to pick some mail and a very heavy package, then run to some of the people doing some work for us here, and finally take a car trip up the cliff to check out the greenhouses of Almeria, where over 50% of the European demand in fruits and vegetables is produced.
Next week, we are back with a technical video about water makers!

I Love your sense of Humor Sophie!!! I was actually crying laughing so hard watching you cruise the marina in your robe carrying the TP.
Classic video! -Ryan
Wow you tell a good story with humour and good insight. So fun to watch, thank you.
Exactly my thought as first exposure to this channel. Donated to several others can I squeeze in any more!
Sophie, you two continue to make me laugh do not ever change your approach to story telling....it is so fun and light hearted!
Thanks Jon! Not planning on changing anything anytime soon :)
One of my favorite videos so far!
Thank you for the video Sophie. I enjoyed the glimpse into marina life. I also appreciated the look into modern agriculture...that was truly amazing.
You have a great talent for this Sophie, thanks for the entertainment.
Besides for a few overcomeables this looks like a really cool place! Thanks for taking us along Sophie! Absolutely love your channel❣️😊👍🏼
Great edit Sophie...You're a breath of fresh air...!
Thanks Allen!
Sophie, love to see your funny videos. - In the Caribbean Granada, south of the hurricane zone, people refit their boats during the hurricane season from June - November, refiting and repairs are part of the life, living on a boat. Costa Del Viento always has Sol, we know, we had a place in Nerja for 20 years.
1:22 you have such an aptitude for this Sophie ! 😂👍
Bravo
Okay, you folks won me over. You are such a comedian Sophie. I subscribed..
I really enjoyed watching!
You are very entertaining, Sophie!
This is award-winning stuff. Seriously Sophie. So entertaining!
Just love this Channel, it gets better and better every episode.
Keep up the good work guys.
Thanks for doing a video about my Town!
Thanks for sharing your story-I enjoyed all 20:40 minutes. Great job
So glad you enjoyed it Peter!
of the 15 sailing channels i'm subscribed to, (just found your channel), i've never left a comment... but you are amazing. your humor and delivery had me laughing out loud! i need to go back to episode 1 and binge now... :-)
Aw thanks Jody!!!! your comment brightened my Sunday! :) /Sophie
That was fantastic. Thank You.
very good humor. good video
I love Sophie....you need your own network tv show....(i also enjoy Ryan, he is the perfect foil, and a very smart one)......from texas with love...
fun video....you have a fantastic presentation approach....and very very creative (the opening toilet transit scene). Thanks! Andrew
Sophie, you crack me up. Well done.So well put together with tons of humor as usual.
Sophie you are a natural at video production and have a great sense of humor. Good video.
Ah Sophie, you are so creative. What a great marina as far as marina's go and an interesting bathroom. The greenhouses are incredible. Great job again.
Hey Sophie you really rocked those pjs and loved the toilet paper parade..👍🤪you have a great sense of humor and my husband and I enjoy watching your channel..ps Ryan does great technical videos
It takes a special gift to animate such enthusiasm and charisma when touring a dodgy toilet, I for one found it disturbingly entertaining!
Thank you Nick, that is a great compliment! ;)
The aquifer in this area is known as "Campo de Dalias" and is the reason for the intensive vegetable and fruit production here (sun and water!). However, the aquifer was over-exploited by the end of the 80s and now they have to rely on a large desalination plant. So I'm amused to see Sophie struggle with her rather heavy desalination plant!
Another great and entertaining video. It's amazing how many greenhouses there are. I look forward to the DIY watermaker video. 😊
Loved almerimar , visited many times by Motorhome , getting boat asap
All your awesome camerawork reminds me of "Survivorman" on U.S. Television. That's a major professional compliment. Well done! I really enjoyed this one!
OMGosh you are so lovely! I love your channel & the editing gets better and better. I bet the intro was a bit of a PITA, what with all the camera angles, setups & having to do everything 3 times, to pull off the slick edit.
Great video I enjoyed the tour of the marina and the look at the pace where all of the veggies are grown with you saying how much of Europe that place supplies it doesn't look all that big in contrast. I am looking forward to seeing the watermaker and the arch installs.
Sophie you're incredibly funny, I laughed my ass of looking at you waling to the toilets in the morning and the imitation of Shania, very funny
The things that happen when Ryan isn’t around... 😅
Really enjoyed this one Sophie, you did a great job of filming and editing! Almerimar is like a RUclips hub, theres you guys, sailing Impavidus and mothership adrift there currently.
We are thinking it's where we'll winter next season.
Thanks for the tour(s). Enjoyed seeing the area. Hope you enjoy the water maker.
Almerimar 😍🇪🇸
Truly enjoyed your Video. Several thumbs up 👍!
Great job Sophie. Enjoyed the tour. Really excited to see the watermaker video! GOD bless you guys. JC
Thanks JC! :)
Most excellent video. You should be proud of your creative talent.
I've lived in Spain the last two and a half years and have been to Almerimar a few times too, nearly bought a boat there. I'm surprised about the loos there as my experience of Spanish toilets has been very good. Even the toilet in the local hardware store is much better than most of the British pubs I've been in.
To be fair, they are clean. Though it would have been nice to get a heads up on the toilet paper situation BEFORE having to use them desperately the first time 😂
Excellent video, always beautiful and informative. Thanks, Sophie
We have quite a few covered plastic farms here, mostly berries. Quite an interesting place with very different things going on everywhere. The bathrooms....hum, lesson learned! Another very good video, I just love your sense of humor, you’re absolutely the best!!!
Nena
Thank you Nena! :D
Another very good video, thanks for the tour. The arch looks like it will be a welcome addition.
It's been on for a little over 24 hours now, and we LOVE it :)
water maker ! great - can't wait to see video how you install it :)
thanks
Anyone else love that the two old dudes carried the water maker while the young dude watched?
Great video Sophie! Loved it!
Really enjoyed this one Sophie, you did a great job of filming and editing
A bientôt. Jean-Philippe
I really enjoy your videos you do a great job thanks for the tour of the marina and the town
Nice one Sophie! Bet you can't wait for your summer to arrive to go sailing!
Me neither!!! I am so looking forward to get back at sea... /Sophie
The pair of you are great. Sophie - you are very funny. Ruby rose and you two are my favourite channels.
Aw, thanks Richard! That means a lot to us :)
So, I must admit that I've enjoyed your 'content creation'. Ummm, all of it. I have NOT watched a single video that I didn't enjoy thoroughly. That sounds like a subscribe to me. And, honestly- I'm a subscribe snob. Hitting that button is a commitment, and, my time/value is important. However, your sense of humor is a bit infectious (like COVID-19?) & Ryan did an exceptional jorb regarding AGM to LiFePO4- completely unexpected! The bond though was formed on your way to the Canaries- where your crew got sick (helpful, no?) & the grand Beneteau seemed more like a cork than a sailing vessel. Good on Ya! (both) for seeing it as a learning curve event, and pressing forward. Longest effort ever to say "I'm a new subscriber!" Thank you for fun & funny content.
Using google earth and their measuring devise, it looks like nearly 120 square miles of green houses.....that is huge. Very nice video,,,,,,excellent job.
WOW!!! Very nice.
Very nice and informative video Sophie. And I have said it before. You are soo funny :)
Thanks plovdal! :)
What a fantastic video !
Thanks Allan! :)
If you are in one place due to weather or repairs or refurbishment, that is part of a sailing lifestyle
That was defiantly fun , you found an interesting marina to keep a boat at , off season for cheap! Were the docks used for shipping the fruit and veg from in the past? Wow! google earth really shows the huge green house operations! You will have to plan you adventurers more carefully if you want to sail year round!
Thanks for posting cheers warren
Excellent and very well done
Thank you Philippe!
Awesome again! :-)
How many extra miles do you do setting up the shots? Really enjoy your videos, and your unique sense of humor.
Pajamas are trendy, I'm watching you in mine. :P I've seen photos of that sea of greenhouses before but didn't know where they were!
Its the Sophie Show!!
Enjoyed the tour
About 15 years ago, I remember a family member immigrated illegally to Spain from Morocco and ended up working in one of these greenhouses near Roquetas De Mar. Needless to say that the working conditions were brutal. I remember that back then they were paid the equivalent of 500 dollars working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week and they weren't allowed to leave the farms for fear of being caught. It's fascinating to learn that a lot of people in Europe to this date don't know about those greenhouses. A huge portion of the illegal immigrants coming from Africa through Morocco end up working there. A lot of the greenhouse owners know about that but still rely heavily on that supply of labor. I won't be surprised if they even had some sort of agreements with mafias operating the Morocco/Spain human trafficking routes. From what my cousin told me, the Spanish local authorities were aware of their presence but kept a closed eye. It would have been simply impossible to find local workers who would have been willing to accept the working conditions/low salaries in those greenhouses.
This point is true today. Seeing this makes a person realize a lot of sad truths as well as the fact the our food supply is very concentrated and susceptible to issue. Much of what makes the world turn is stuff behind the curtain, we need to pull it back and see whats up.
You will see lots of Almerimar in Turkey...!
Europe is large!
Millions to feed....
Could you please explain in your next Q&A what all the antenna are at the stern of Polar seal, I have only got upto blog 21 , so if you have already explained about then I am very sorry. Love Ryan and Sophie and will be disapointed when I get up to date on your transmissions and have to wait for the next one. Love to you both. Regards from Nobby Clarke
Hi Ian... we sure can but to answer you direct. They are our 4g extender antenna. We have a wifi one as well but its not used much. There are also 2 gps and a Navex but the naxev will not be going back on the new arch. Hope this helps
Thanks for coming back, have a great sail, and looking forwards to more of your adventures.@@RyanSophieSailing
Great story telling. Bom Dia Bella
What no paper? Yes the facilities are basic. But what a great community, with some fantastic places to go just a few clicks away. All in all we would come back and recommend many of the local businesses. Sail Safe. Ant & Cid (SV Impavidus) xx
Great video as usual! :)
Does anyone has any clue on which tune is used from 15:40 to 17:20? It's really nice. :)
I love your videos...
Thanks Charles! So glad you enjoy them :)
I thoght it was called Costa del plasico. I want to see more of the Shania Twain impersonation. It will be interesting seeing where you install the watermaker components on the 2 cabin version of the Bene 40.
At least there is a chance to get blown away there :-)
Hahaha! In all senses of the term, yes! ;)
We only get a few seconds of the Shania Twain? I feel robbed. :)
You are a cool lady.
I did like this video. Wished you could have taken us into some of the greenhouses. It would be very interesting to see how this "sea of plastic" was actually producing 1/2 of the European demand. Greenhouse food growing is a BIG new growing concept taking hold on solving the good food required by people. The Netherlands is one of the leaders and a ton is grown in hydroponics, not soil. :-)
I wish the same Richard! They do occasionally do tours of the greenhouses, but I didn't manage to get into one yet... Everything here is grown in hydroponics too, which makes it really interesting! /Sophie
Idea for video: I heard some countries don't require an exam to sail, other like Spain i think require a lot of exams. What happens if you go from one country to the other? do you need to do exams or convalidate licenses? In other words: How do i become a "official" sailor?? What was your process? ;) I'm following you from your first video. Love your editing, freshness and humor )
I know this is going to sound simple and weird, but since you spent so much air time on”bathroom/toilet” I feel better about asking. Have you guys come across any bidet attachments to boat toilets? There must be some, but I’m yet to see it. And given you are European and it is a common European feature in bathrooms, just curious if you know of any😂😂
Hi Ryan & Sophie
Could you do a video on
How much was the cost of the the arch to have manufactured and the installed. I take it will be for mounting solar panels and wind generator aerials etc . Will you also be able to be use it as Davies for your tender .
Hi Les! We are going to do an entire video on the arch project, complete with features, price, design, process, etc... It should come out in a couple of weeks! /Sophie
Too thoon.. soon,
the thun.. sun is coming out.
It is not easy to understand you dear Sophie.
sophie, you.re getting better as a video creator. "live to live"
Thanks Bob! That means a lot! :) /Sophie
250 euro a month to berth through the winter period? Is there much difference being there for the summer.. by the way very entertaining 👍
Who on earth would give this video a thumbs down and why? (rhetorical)
You went past a lovely Najad on your run 😀
I think about you everytime I pass a Najad... Oh by the way, yesterday I applied 2 coats of Semco teak sealer on our teak, On top of being extremely easy to apply, the results are fantastic!!! 200% recommend. We'll see how our teak looks a couple of months, but in the meantime, the difference is already massive!
@@RyanSophieSailing Semco, or as I like to call it "liquid gold" - and I am not just referring to the colour. I hope to complete my 2nd coat this weekend, but I am delighted with the results already.
I'm sure you will be back to sea soon and the water maker will give you more Independence and endurance
Yeah, we're already starting to see results with the refit, and we are so pleased!
Yes it must be handy to never have to fill up with fresh water again, just need to improve the fishing skills now and you will be self sufficient 👍👍👍🐠🐠🐠🦞🦞🦞
One question most urban people do not ask is where does my food come from? It is important, not the store, but some farmer / rancher raised our food.
Awesome video! i'm going to be there next year with my boat :) Can i pretty please ask how much that solar arch cast you?
Stay tune, the answer will be published in exactly an hour ;)
(This week’s video is 100% dedictated to the arch project!) /Sophie
RE the WC on the women's side: without toilet paper dispensers you have to admit the lines on the wall are a lot more attractive. And a good 15cms narrower than a WC with tp... cozy.
Puzzled by your map of Spain - was it purchased in the Basque region?
You should play the whole karayoke song you sang! Sofie Swift, Taylor’s cousin.
Sophie plastic is fantastic. It is only the waste and recycling that is failing. People are failing plastic. It is more than shopping bags and plastic bottles.
Can't you just shower on-board your boat? Endless water supply at the marina and AC voltage to heat the water. Thanks for the marina tour!
That's what I ended up doing after I got tired of waiting for 30 minutes in a humid cramped space 😅
O nice
