Slower NOT Always Better - Speed vs MPG Test 3.0 Duramax Diesel

  • I ran the 2024 SIlverado ZR2 with the 3.0 Duramax Diesel Engine on Bonneville Salt Flats to see where the best MPG was as far as speed goes. This test was unscientific but it did provide a nice flat wide open area with no obstacles to vary the speed.
    The ZR2 comes with larger tires than other models and therefore are much heavier as well. The 3.0 Duramax Diesel in any other trim likely would net 50+mpg in this same test.

    GM built what is probably the world's most advanced diesel, and ppl can only complain about the oil pump belt. The capability of this thing is amazing.

      It's because people are jealous their truck isn't as good or because they can't afford one. It has a 150-200k lifespan. There's plenty of vehicles with timing belts that need replacement at the same mileage or less, and costs pretty much the same for the service. Also, I'd rather have a pump belt break on me and lose oil pressure where you can quickly shut the truck down before doing damage. The same can't be said of a failed timing belt.

    I averaged 23MPG on a 3k mile round trip out west. And that was travelling all speeds, terrain and weather. Oh, and the AC was on the whole time. Still impressive for a truck like this.

    23 LTZ 4wd (stock) here. I did a short mpg test with hills/highways in NorCal. 30-40 miles each way.
    50mph 41mpg
    55mph 38mpg
    60mph 35mpg
    65mph 33mpg
    70 mph 29-31mpg
    “Allegedly” 80-90mph 25-26mpg
    Definitely agreed with sport mode on in town I get better mileage. On the highway (70-80) I’m seeing better mileage in normal mode.
    I have 15k miles love this truck.

    I get 32.8 mpg average going 60-65 mph on my 2020 Chevy Silverado LT 4wd 6'6" box. I just changed the transmission fluid and filter at 80,000 miles after watching your videos. The previous owner hadn't changed it. Thank you for the content you make on these trucks.

    Thanks for the "real" MPG numbers. I enjoy your videos! My buddy's 23 LZ0 shows 27ish compared to my 22 EcoBoost 3.5 showing 22'ish when I drive them for similar driving loops. There seems to be a lot of Chevy guys that exaggerate their numbers or maybe aren't good at math 😉

      If you calculate at the pump your ecoboost will be 20% or more off on its mileage MPG calculations. They’ve been like that since 2015. I’ve owned 2009, 2015, 17 and 21. My 2009 was the only one that was accurate like my new LZO.

    Diesels seem to have a sweet spot where they are most efficient under some sort of load. Otherwise they kinda just lug around. Sport mode in the city helps a lot too.

  • @grantgossett1645
    @grantgossett1645 Месяц назад +4

    I have a '23 LZO and I see an overall average of 23.7 mpg tracking fuel economy with the Fuelly app. 70/30 city/hwy is mostly what i am driving 60ish MPH to and from work. Only big thing I noticed was a trip to Florida towing a 7x14 double axel trailer with two Harley Baggers, didn't get anything better than 12 mpg and man did it love DEF.

    • @Meh-2023
      @Meh-2023 Месяц назад +3

      Yep. The programming gets DEF thirsty as soon as tow mode and a load is on it. It's horribly calibrated too. Went from 2 bars down to a reduced speed warning in 97 miles.

    • @DemonWorks
      @DemonWorks  Месяц назад +3

      I agree with towing drinking def but also a recent road trip with no towing, I got the warning to come on just going up hills.... terrible calculation system.

    Mileage is load dependent. Each engine has an optimal BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption), This is load and rpm dependent, the closer you are to that sweet spot, the better milage you will get for the fuel. Most diesels (cylinder geometry and flame speed dependent) run best 1400-1700rpm under moderate load, typically just enough not to spool the turbo.

    At 30 mpg you are still using a lower gear. Manually shift it to a better cruising gear at each MPH and the MPG will go up on each one.

    • @DemonWorks
      @DemonWorks  23 дня назад

      I felt this was the best apples to apples comparison for same exact conditions at each speed.

  • @slickcasner4205

    I think what trim of truck you have and options make a huge difference also. Almost as much as speed. My truck is set up for towing. it’s the lowest height wise 4 x 4 GM makes. It has 18” wheels. Does not have AT tires. Maxtow. But is the longest 1/2 ton they make. Also have a bed cover. Speed does not affect my truck near as severe as it seems to affect yours in the video.

  • @harshalparashar4193
    @harshalparashar4193 Месяц назад +1

    for the best milage you should be cruising at the speed possible in the highest gear in the peak torque range, that would give you the best mileage. In my car it's around 70 mph at 1800 rpm when it gives the best milage. This is considering that the road is uneven, and the vehicle needs the torque to fight the uphill battles without dropping a gear. on a level ground it should be the lowest speed in the highest gear, for me that is 55 mph at 1200 rpm.

      they changed the way it's routed on the 22.5+ . I now have a PPE Bypass valve in place. 104 degree ambient temps, I saw 156 degrees on the trans. I'm happy now.

    at 85 mph it is the same as my '17 Tacoma was getting at 62 mph. Can't complain about that, if I ever get it back from the shop with a new CCV.

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul Месяц назад +1

      GM better start using a different grease in the CCV, it's getting ridiculous. At least make it less work to remove the CCV so owners can put quality grease in the actuators

    If only GM would make 3.42 the standard axle ratio and allow 3.73's in non-max tow configurations.

      I agree ☝️

    • @3.0dmax
      @3.0dmax Месяц назад

      Yep, I think 3.42 rear was the best compromise. At least it was paired with the 6L80. I'm not enough of a gear-head to know if that's the case with the 10L80 though. 🤔

  • @bhouse4322

    What’s the air temp? I think air inlet temp plays a part. I’m not sure but I think I get better MPG when it’s 65° vice 80° outside.

    • @DemonWorks
      @DemonWorks  18 дней назад

      Air temp was hot! 🥵 I wasn’t trying to get max mpg though, I was trying to see how the speed really changed the mpg. It was a near perfect scenario with no wind, no traffic and no inclines or declines. I can for sure get better mpg numbers on short spurts and different speeds but i felt this nailed it on how speed can vary numbers so much.

    Trying to decide between this or a PowerBoost hybrid. Day to day I do mostly city, (15.8 miles round trip) but I take 300 mile round trips every other weekend. Not sure if diesel would be worth it because I wouldn’t be towing regularly

    • @erickmontero6222
      @erickmontero6222 Месяц назад

      In daily driving they’ll be about the same maybe the diesel edges out the ford. But on the highway it’s no competition the diesel easily will get 5 mpg better. Really it comes down to cost of diesel in your area and your brand/design preference.

    • @DemonWorks
      @DemonWorks  Месяц назад

      Hopefully I have enough videos posted up to help you make that decision. i try to show the pros and cons of these trucks with my GM dealer tech experience as well as the 5 I have owned.
