Mid/side eqing is one of the most overlooked mixing techniques. It's an important aspect of mixing your tracks and gaining the control over a 3D stereo field.

Been mixing and mastering for 21 years, and just lately I started to use Mid/Side more than usual. It really is amazing, that's how I found this video, by wondering if others feel the same.
Another thing to mention is go and listen to what is purely mids and purely sides in a sound. You want your ears to remember what they sound like so you can identify which frequencies in the mid or side that may be overlapping way too much. For example in my drops I tend to eq the 3.5k hz in the mids in background layers so I can give room to my kick/snare(since they predominantly focus in the center of the mix).
A free eqalizer, MEqualizer, has really simple mid/side options, just a couple clicks, and it also has a polarity option which sometimes really helps the vocal placeement. Really great free plugin that comes part of a pack of like 20 or 30 plugins.
very true 🙂🙂
What a timing! I was today looking for how to do this!
Nice!
You were predestined to be different(Romans 8:29), he who has an ear to hear, let him hear(Mark 4:9).
HALLELUYAH!(PRAISE YE YAH!)
I like the idea of making mix things in mono, it gives you a more "tangled" sound. So if you can fix it in mono like that, you will always be surprised when open the "stereo gates" and see how beauty and spacial your sound is. Like, u already done the most hard part. So, now give it a try! open the gates of a new dimension, and WOW! The sound is clean and separated because a good mix done before in mono. But this is my way to do that, nothing is a rule, because of that i love when u say in your videos that doesn't have any rules, and thats the rightest thing on sound design! As a great producer said some time: "it's not about 'hey! how i do that?', but it's about how to hear it better, and have no rules to it."
Loads more of these tutorials will be perfect. So thanks.
You are always coming out with videos at proper timing. Thanks for another great video from one of my favorite producers!
Thanks dad. I’m learning so much from this channel.
Your really good. I need to concentrate more on using mid side because
I'm still learning how to process this properly. Great tutorial 👍🏼
Man that swung drop at 1:44 is so good
finally a mixing video, thanks for the importan tutorial
!! would love to see a mixing tutorial about Reezebasses& Supersaws. Its sometimes hard for me to fit them together
my mixes improved a ton after fully understanding these concepts (side/mono fields in general)
LOOL, I literally sipped my tea as you picked up and sipped your coffee
It sounds like well mixed Chaos xD
Like that coffee too while covering songs myself!
that drop is sick bro!!!!!!
This is honestly THE BEST video i have found on this
GREAT value !!! very specific mixing tips/tricks videos will be much appreciated
like this! simple and straight to the point
Thank you bro! It's really helpful
sweet track, thanks for the video
"Mixing Sucks" The most true and valuable thing I learned lol, Great Vid!
I didnt hear any differences on my headphones. Idk any music theory or stuff but , is it bc of my ears or headphone?
“Listen to me, I’m your dad” 😆 Cool Vid: Subbed.
where can i hear the full track? ... I love it.
"Listen to me. I'm your Dad." LMAO
My favorite EQ for Mid/Side is the BX Digital V3.
You didnt mention testing the track in mono after messing with all of this! Very important step
thanks for doing these!
You're welcome!
Waiting for some awesome sound layering and sound selection tips and techniques 🙏
About to go in the studio now
Very useful video!! Can you explain how to deal with harshness? Like with saws in a drop
Harshness is usually in the high end, while layering your super saws, decide one which takes the highs in the range of 10,000-20,000hz and for the rest cut of the highs till 10,000hz it'll make a significant change in the way you mix! Also try not to have too many layers! Cheers have a nice day!
Thanks dad!
Hope you're winning son 😁
i also love coffee
Hey Dad, love your videos! However, I think you slightly overdid the mid vocal EQ at 7:20 making the mid signal muddy. Additionally, when mid / side EQing, I find it very important to adjust / boost the gain of the EQ to match what you cut. That way, the final result sounds much better. I agree with all decisions in this video, but the final A-B-ing was a little underwhelming. There is much more potential. Anyhow, keep them vids and gringy jokes coming!
Great video, thanks
1:44 that's so sickkkk🔥
Gave Me Some Skrillex Vibes With That.
great!
any chance you will make a video going over that nebula sample track you did?
Just made a Tynan inspired video in which I'll be doing the same thing as I did in Nebula track. Basically making a drop with glitch sounds. Will be out tomorrow :)
Oversampled I fucking (and I can’t stress this enough) love you.
MID/SIDE all the time? Yeah... And later you have to repair a fase problems? Most of mastering engineers says MID/SIDE is a last chance tool. And I believe them.
Is there a link to this song? It’s so dope at the drop
nice work bruh
I fkn love it!!!
What I’m Confused About, Is Using It During Mixing, or Mastering.
It Seems To Me, Mid/Side Is More For Mastering Than Mixing.
Both :)
is it bad... that I did not hear a difference at all...?
So is this used mostly on stereo tracks not mono?
Do u also make sure the volumes are the same after doing m/s & r/L so its gains staged as it was previously
You can if you want to. I don't do that just cause it takes too much time and I don't think it's that worth it
Oversampled i feel that bro, me too, thank you for clarifying w me!
Moreeeeee mixing videos!!!!!!!!
👌
Where are you from brudda?
epic vid. could you cover m/s compression too?
Thanks, check out How to deal with muddy frequencies vid, I go over multiband compression there. So once you have a multiband compressor set up just switch to mid/side. Basically the same principles apply. If there's a loud frequency on sides that plays not all the time but sometimes just slap a MB comp on sides, or if you just want to compress frequencies on sides in general - same thing
@@Oversampled thanks man, that's super helpful!
i really suck at mixing and i cant notice the difference in this.
help ;-;
I'm not being ungrateful for the tutorial but I didn't notice the difference either.
Ünifang listen with headphones
Yeah, it's really subtle, just a little bit cleaner
@@blehm_7403 thats the point here, my ear is not that sensitive to hear the difference even though I did wear a headphone ;-; proof how suck I am
@@SpyderBlackOfficial yeah me too
And then problem with phase, badum tss
thanks dad
What plugin did you use to make that granular sound?
Sampler
I've heard that it's not very good to drink coffee before a Mixing session. 😅
maybe choosing more usual elements. this is a bit chaotic
I see you finally have a curtain to fix the lighting haha
Yeah sort of 🤣 that's just a different part of the room and different window
Hi dad thats for the tips
heyy dad pls come back :c
What Ableton Theme is this one? Anybody has any idea?
Does miside affect mono compatibility?
yes, you could make it better or worse. Dan Worall / Fabfilter has a short series of 3 videos about mixing in stereo and mono compatibility and he talks about some M/S stuff
thumbs up for the Minecraft drinking noise
you not my dad xDD
Nice video btw!
Free tip: Should have picked a less annoying part of the song.
"producers don't go outside anyways".... And all this time I thought it just me lol 😅😅😅
dude what the HELL is going on in the buildup LMFAO
What track would you use as a reference for this one?
what is this ableton skin??
abletonthemes.com
WRONG INFORMATION.. the sides are supposed to sit exactly where he cut them
IT SOUNDS THE EXACT SAME
something ain't warped
don't listen to anybody except of him, he's your dad
wait...that was good
Oh…so you’re my dad!
Compà ti vivi troppi cafè...papà...

Nice trolling
Man the track hurt ma ear 🥴
Listen to me...I'm your dad
It's hard to understand you. You shortcut words or something.
Otherwise the video is good
