    Mid/side eqing is one of the most overlooked mixing techniques. It's an important aspect of mixing your tracks and gaining the control over a 3D stereo field.

    Been mixing and mastering for 21 years, and just lately I started to use Mid/Side more than usual. It really is amazing, that's how I found this video, by wondering if others feel the same.

    Another thing to mention is go and listen to what is purely mids and purely sides in a sound. You want your ears to remember what they sound like so you can identify which frequencies in the mid or side that may be overlapping way too much. For example in my drops I tend to eq the 3.5k hz in the mids in background layers so I can give room to my kick/snare(since they predominantly focus in the center of the mix).

    A free eqalizer, MEqualizer, has really simple mid/side options, just a couple clicks, and it also has a polarity option which sometimes really helps the vocal placeement. Really great free plugin that comes part of a pack of like 20 or 30 plugins.

    I like the idea of making mix things in mono, it gives you a more "tangled" sound. So if you can fix it in mono like that, you will always be surprised when open the "stereo gates" and see how beauty and spacial your sound is. Like, u already done the most hard part. So, now give it a try! open the gates of a new dimension, and WOW! The sound is clean and separated because a good mix done before in mono. But this is my way to do that, nothing is a rule, because of that i love when u say in your videos that doesn't have any rules, and thats the rightest thing on sound design! As a great producer said some time: "it's not about 'hey! how i do that?', but it's about how to hear it better, and have no rules to it."

    • @kartikm7
      @kartikm7 4 года назад +1

      Harshness is usually in the high end, while layering your super saws, decide one which takes the highs in the range of 10,000-20,000hz and for the rest cut of the highs till 10,000hz it'll make a significant change in the way you mix! Also try not to have too many layers! Cheers have a nice day!

    Hey Dad, love your videos! However, I think you slightly overdid the mid vocal EQ at 7:20 making the mid signal muddy. Additionally, when mid / side EQing, I find it very important to adjust / boost the gain of the EQ to match what you cut. That way, the final result sounds much better. I agree with all decisions in this video, but the final A-B-ing was a little underwhelming. There is much more potential. Anyhow, keep them vids and gringy jokes coming!

      @Oversampled  4 года назад +3

      Thanks, check out How to deal with muddy frequencies vid, I go over multiband compression there. So once you have a multiband compressor set up just switch to mid/side. Basically the same principles apply. If there's a loud frequency on sides that plays not all the time but sometimes just slap a MB comp on sides, or if you just want to compress frequencies on sides in general - same thing
