You could explain this type of information to some people a thousand times, but it will still take them 10 or more years to fully understand without having to be reminded. I'm one of them. I've been privately studying audio/recording for over 25 years and I still don't fully understand it all. Some of it is just mind boggling. Thanks man..
OMG THANK YOU ! I've been killing my mixes with no dynamics and phasing issues this is a lifesaver I never knew why I was inverting the phase or what it even was. Most tutorials on youtube are a bunch of bedroom preset junkies that's don't really know what they're doing just know a few words and use them in a way that gives the illusion of perceived knowledge... I'm no professional but I'm sure I understand a lot more than I show. in this game, it's not what you know is how you use it!
Dan, you consistently put out some of the most high yield and insightful tutorials out there. Thank you for taking the time to do these...they're on another level compared to most videos on here and it's greatly appreciated
I am so stunned. Simply stunned. After years of professional and semiprofessional studio recordings I finally found the key to awesome drumsounds! Thanks Dan - now we have to redo all records :)
What a great tutorial. Clearly "Dan" is a educator as well, not just an expert on the subject area. Thank you, now only do I understand how this works.
utterly outstanding video considering it came from the official source, which shouldnt be surprising but I see so many official channels out there with less than stellar tutorials, or are too boring to watch. these are the BEST out there. thanks so much Dan and FabF!!
The videos you make are not only incredibly informative, but the production and attention to detail is the best I've seen. After watching many tutorial videos, I can honestly say that I learn more from these (relatively short) videos compared to some of the long-winded alternatives I have come across. Thank you so much! Fabfilter products are amazing; particularly Pro-Q, Pro-MB, Pro-C and Pro-G. You certainly set the standard!
Mr. Worrall you are the shit. These are some of the absolute best tutorials for EQing on RUclips. Incredibly insightful. I can't wait for the next one. Thank you.
This is an AWESOME video. I've been watching a bunch of videos over the last few days about how to do mid/side EQ, but none of them explained why or what is making it work. This went into a perfect level of technical details and added a lot of information to my understanding of how to use mid/side processing.
:O standing ovations to Dan Worrall! I can't remember when I last saw such a good tutorial on RUclips. It is such a pleasure to watch this. This shows that teaching has its own aesthetics. Beautiful!
Legendary videos! I'd wish that many other plugin manufacturers made just as well produced product showcase+tutorial like you guys do! You get shown what the product is capable of and how to use it which is something a lot of other showcases lack! In most cases with other manufacturers you just get slammed a plugin in your face and get told "look how pretty and powerful this is, now please buy it, and oh let other consumers do the explaining on how to use it" I've recently become a big fan of yours! :) Everything seems well thought off. And Dan Worrall is the David Attenborough of music in terms of voicing! :D
Thank you fabfilter for: 1. The a detailed lesson like this. 2. Featuring our beloved mentor Sir Dan Worral. 3. Not using a shitty rap song for the demonstration.
The most of the video's i have seen from Fabfilter are always very calmly explained. And even easy to follow for people who are just getting into the whole eq and mid side way of working.Big Thumb Up and thank you for the video('s) ;) :D
Hey as a washed up old engineer, it’s a sort of guilty pleasure to hear these. I know a reasonable % of this but your clear and concise explanation is a FUCKING DELIGHT
nice tutorial! I have been using this technique a lot with live recording, but nobody had clarified if this was the M/S I see in my Fab plugins and other VST's. Thanks for this.
Whatever FabFilter is paying you Dan, they're getting a bargain!! Amazing info as always and really highlights the fine FabFilter brand. I see this video is 9 years old!! I hope you're still on the payroll.
this makes me want to buy fabfilter products because the information is valuable, well-presented, in-depth, and most importantly not trying to sell me their product specifically
A. Great Video B. Great narration voice (one of the smoothest, clearest and least annoying on videos of this type) C. Nice to see someone using something other than Pro Tools (ugly, outdated) - I like Studio One Pro V3 myself
I like how you say outdated to the STILL INDUSTRY STANDART D.A.W... and yet, one year before this very comment. You just haven't put the time to drive it like your everyday's car.
Thank you for this mind opening tutorial. And special thanks for providing awesome music and not that techno crap most Fabfilter tutorials here on YT use.
Great tutorials fabfilter!!!! Always with history background, tech details and real uses. Looks like a good academic work! But I was wondering. Wouldnt the equations be like (L+R) = 2M and (L-R) = 2S?
i love this micing concept! i don't understand how the two sides end up at the same volume however. how can you subtract the signal from the other and it come out the same level as adding them together on the left side? please help!! thanks so much for your amazing tutorials dan!
Because positive and negative are not the same for audio as arithmetic. To our ears, there is no difference at all between positive sound pressure and negative sound pressure. Invert the polarity of a signal by itself and you won't hear any change. So adding a positive side to the mid won't be any louder than adding a negitive side (subtraction) to the mid.
@@marcchurch1245 thank you for your reply. I understand comnstructive and destructive interference. the bit i don't get is why the right channel isn't much quieter than the left if it is being subtracted from the mid channel. any help would be great thanks!
I was very happy this morning to find a notification about this in my E-Mails, especially after purchasing the FX Bundle last week. Thanks once again! Dan.. I don't suppose you have a book out at all do you?!
When you say the side information is "lost" after summing, do you mean it's lost due to phase cancelation, therefore missing entirely? Or do you mean the information is still audible, but just buried underneath the mono information?
whoever it was in fabfilter that decided to make Dan Worrall do all of their plugin videos deserves to be CEO of the world
I think I have seen this video like 50 times already... the info in it is so valuable that I keep watching it over and over again

haha I wanted to like you comment but it seems like I already did a long time ago, I keep coming to this video too!
Dan Worral is probably the Best Teacher is the world :)

still appreciated 10 yrs later from newcomer engineers 🙌
Love that your primary DAW in all these videos is Reaper. It's the shit. Most people are still sleeping on it's power.
True. I didnt knew about it’s existence until my teacher told me about it. Then I started to see it in many videos I watch
I am so stunned. Simply stunned. After years of professional and semiprofessional studio recordings I finally found the key to awesome drumsounds! Thanks Dan - now we have to redo all records :)

Fun to walk down memory lane and see who FF plugs have progressed. I wish I could just have 2% of Dan's wisdom. Utterly brilliant man!
Excellent video series by Dan. The fact that Fabfilter plugins are incredible also helps. Thank you.
I always look forward to new fabfilter videos. Really excellent.

Great video once again, I know it's been out there a long time ago, but I keep coming back to it over and over and over... So useful! Thanks Dan!!!
I needed to watch it 3 times to fully understand everything! Amazing tutorial! I should get this....
it isn't just fabfilter Q that you can use...
These videos always have such great structure. Well done.
the greatest tutorial on youtube, period.
this is gold. I think i have watched everysingle dan worral video
Hey as a washed up old engineer, it’s a sort of guilty pleasure to hear these. I know a reasonable % of this but your clear and concise explanation is a FUCKING DELIGHT
Will be looking at this in the future. Very clear explanation and so much knowledge to delve into !
What a wonderful tutorial and song. Thanks!
nice tutorial! I have been using this technique a lot with live recording, but nobody had clarified if this was the M/S I see in my Fab plugins and other VST's. Thanks for this.
Thank you so much this helped a lot!!!! You saved my life
2:22 is EXACTLY what i've been looking for!
Ikr? Another useful trick to remove junk information from your tracks
Thanks for this. I've been looking into MS lately and this video filled in some of the blanks in my understanding.
Learned a lot and im only 2min in. That master pan knob on the eq is so powerful now.
Bloody brilliant video, THANK YOU!!!! All drummers should carry a copy of it on a memory stick to give to your engineer.
so informative dan is a legend and a respected master on fabfilter musicians champ
Whatever FabFilter is paying you Dan, they're getting a bargain!! Amazing info as always and really highlights the fine FabFilter brand. I see this video is 9 years old!! I hope you're still on the payroll.
Thank you Dan Worrall, you are a star !

you can do literally the exact same thing with eq 8 from ableton, and i'm sure other daws have mid/side, otherwise it'd be a shit daw
Great vid, I needed this! The extra techniques and indepth explanations make it a video worth hanging on to!
Great work! and what a fine comunicator are you! Thanks a lot!
Well, he really did demystify it. Also hello from 2021!
I learned so much just by watching this video. Thank you
perfect video production quality. Subscribed and liked.
there's some amazing information in this video! i think i will have to watch it a few times to properly understand it! but its great..thank you!
damn those plug-ins are great. i really like how they simplify this whole process
I learned so much in just ten minutes. Blessed.

@@vincentclaveau526 this.
whoa I never thought about "empty" M/S plugin being used as M/S panner, that's some really nice trick!
Excellent info and demonstration. Thanks!
sheesh, gotta watch that at least ten more times before I think I am going to get it.
You guys are amazing 🥺
Wow... thank you for this perfect tutorial.
Watched again. Thanks. So very helpful.
Great Video, Great EQ, and great DAW
Excellent explanation.
Great tutorial thanks 🙏👍👍
There's a lot of info here, I'm going to have to find tutorials - nice one, Dan Worrall & fabfilter
Terrific video, as always.
Excellent info guys. Thanks
Congratulations. Very good tutorials.
Great stuff Mr Worrall. Thanks. :)
Excellently presented! Thanks you!
GREAT ....amazing explanation
Best title for a video ever
Another fantastic video. The only qualm I have with Pro-Q's mid/side EQ is that it can cause phasing issues very quickly though.
Using linear phase will solve that, I would think.
Thank you for this mind opening tutorial. And special thanks for providing awesome music and not that techno crap most Fabfilter tutorials here on YT use.
Such a gem. Thank you 🍀
Love how he xplains✌💯💯
Hi, Dan. Great video! Is there any option to do the 3:00 mark frequency sweep without writing automation or using an external controller? Thanks!!!
I wish I would have seen this earlier. Thanks Dan
Dan Worrall, are you a programmer behind FabFilter?
Fab's excellence and that of your presentation are "in-phase" 😊😊👍
Great stuff ! Keep em coming !
Incomprehensible. Lots more handy examples on Q2 would’ve certainly helped. Gonna have to watch this another two maybe three times.
I love my FabFilter Plugins!
I don't care that this is a 6 year old video. Some people are still just starting, like me, and this video was absolutely fantastic. WOW!
er
Great tutorial! you got skills.
I love this channel.
Wow. Really helpful. Many thanks!
Great Tutorial, thanks
Love the voice and the video
these videos are so helpful
Wow.... so well done and educational. Thank you!
Thanks for this. Really helpful.
Please Dan, come and tell me a story every night to help me sleep. HOWEVER this video didn't make me want to sleep at all. Great job!
Great tutorials fabfilter!!!! Always with history background, tech details and real uses. Looks like a good academic work!
But I was wondering. Wouldnt the equations be like (L+R) = 2M and (L-R) = 2S?
This is such a good video about mid side holy damn thankyou
i love this micing concept! i don't understand how the two sides end up at the same volume however. how can you subtract the signal from the other and it come out the same level as adding them together on the left side? please help!! thanks so much for your amazing tutorials dan!

oh wait i just figured it out! it's because the 2 sides of the 8 pattern were already in opposite polarities. it all makes sense now!
Great tutorial!
I was very happy this morning to find a notification about this in my E-Mails, especially after purchasing the FX Bundle last week.
Thanks once again! Dan.. I don't suppose you have a book out at all do you?!
Awesome video. Thanks!
is it a good idea to use one eq for sculpting the sound and then another eq for mid side balance?
I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR SO LONG. My Lord, I can't believe how difficult it was to find a worthwhile explanation of this concept.
Yeah but you need the FapFilter Pro-D.
Ask yo mama... teehee
My Favorite Plugins! Thanks You Very Very Much!!!
Does the phase shift inherent to an equalizer ever become an issue when the mid and side with different cuts are recombined?
those videos are gold
Love your tutorials, but why only 360p video quality?
When you say the side information is "lost" after summing, do you mean it's lost due to phase cancelation, therefore missing entirely? Or do you mean the information is still audible, but just buried underneath the mono information?
Does cutting the low frequencies from stereo merge the bass into mono or just remove the sides and let whatever was already panned center through?
Who is this band and what song is it?... Thanks!
Dan is the man! just wish he used ableton live!
do some videos on pro MB! please
