Got an old 90’s Trek Multitrack I saved from the crusher some years ago, missing most parts but brought it back to life and ride and love it every day. Its a kind of an heirloom quality, but I don’t have any kids and not planning on having any. I still got about 6-10 bikes on average, different purposes and all. You got so many great bikes, but what are you going to do with all this stuff you accumulated, once you are old and frail. Are your kids going to have to decide what to do with them? I love your channel and you seem like a great guy, great work ethics and I’m all for what you do, but old, slightly outdated bikes aren’t for everyone. Did you have that conversation with your kids, how to update your fleet, or do you already have a plan in place? My dad passed away a few years back, none of the children wanted any of his stuff. My mom is still ticking, and she has all this amazing stuff which she loves, but none of my siblings are going to want any of this either. Love your channel and keep up the awesome builds, hope you feel better soon.

KHS' never get enough love. I have an Aero Turbo from the early 2000's also geared like a MTB as San Diego is mostly hills. Crazy light even for an aluminum. Definitely won't outlive my early 90's steel KHS or feel as smooth.

I found a 90s Diamondback with a broken rear dropout at the local waste disposal place. Repaired at a local community college. I’ve put Paul moto lite brakes, a Rivendell crankset, a Redshift stem, and a Jones loop bar on it. I’ve told my biking daughter to be sure to reclaim those parts in the event of my death.

But you missed the opportunity to install a Flite saddle on the Flite bike. 🔥

Frames my size ( +66cm ) are hard to come by so I've put my George Longstaff 531 tourer frame ( 37 years old ) and Bob Telfer 853 Pro Team frame ( 29 years old ) in storage for when I get bored of my Cannondale CAD2 ( US built! ) frame and '71 ( 1st year model ) Dawes Galaxy. None of my Brooks saddles are under 40 years old and none of my Rolls saddles are under 30. I collect nothing; I just keep things in the best shape possible, use them to death and swap them around when I get bored.

My current road bike is a 1986 Specialized Allez SE. The frame I believe was manufactured in Japan out of Tange chromoly steel. The original bike was purchased by a friend new, right after he graduated college in '86, was given to another friend, who then gave it to me. I did a bit of a restomod using more modern components. The only reason for this and not restoring the bike back to original condition, was that the bike as a whole didn't have all the original parts because of part failures or being changed out by the second owner trying to build it out as a all-road bike.
This old steel bike rode so well, I sold my carbon road bike and absolutely love it.

Was curious about the bold claim, but i agree, she's a long term proposition. Thanks for sharing. Currently collecting parts for an ultra low maintenance bike: Stanton Sherpa Ti frame, Chris King BB and hubs, ee wings chainset, XT rear mech and brakes, XTR shifters. I'm enjoying harvesting parts where possible from ebay at low prices.

Bought an old crusty non Brooks leather saddle off Ebay for just the frame. I do leather work so I decided to restore the leather. Still looks very distressed but is soft and supple. If and when it fails I'll drill out the rivets and put new leather on it.

Nice old Shimano hubs, or any old Japanese hub, really, will last forever if maintained every now and then. Not a ton of "bling" factor, but I've worked on a ton of them, and I can't remember the last time I had to toss one.

Longest lasting component is probably the old Fichtel&Sachs / SRAM Torpedo 3 Speed internal Gear Hub. They were tested in cold chambers at like -40°F, fully rebuildable and overall pretty much bomb proof. Some of them were ridden over 100.000 miles around the world.

@old shovel as you know i submitted my ridley road bike to you for one of your prior custom bike builds videos, but i just cant put it in me to put flat bars on it!! i love how fast and efficient it is. Street fighter style road bikes are cool and unique ,but not really my style to be personally honest with you. I can see why installing drop bars on a 90s MTB is a thing i used to own one and it turns it into something unique and also give it a new purpose. But flat bar road bikes for me at least just doesn't do it for me, sorry for all the street-fighter lovers out there! but i do admit they are cool but like i said my ridley road bike is staying as it being that its currently my only bike at the moment and with my one piece carbon handlebar and stem combo which was an amazon special by the way, i am pleasently surprised on how resilient they actually are and i have been riding them hard and they have never let me down! lightweight and aero is for me every time i ride my road bike and that is my ethos all the time i ride. I am more of a pure roadie myself!
