One thing to note that's come up in regards to the RAM - it looks as though if a larger module is installed the first 8 GB will run in dual channel with the balance running single channel. Couple of corrections, you can add a 16GB module to have 20GB. 12GB is the max size Asus sells it for,not the max capacity. Secondly, if you put a bigger sized Ram than 4GB, it stills run in dual channel, called Hybrid Dual channel mode where 4GB portion of the higher capacity Ram will work in dual channel with the soldered 4GB module and rest of it will work in single channel. You will still experience some performance degradation if a portion of the memory is running single channel. I’m assuming it’ll keep the shared video memory in the dual channel region?
@@LonSeidman Yes, it will keep the shared memory in the dual channel region. And, I also mentioned that there is a performance penalty in Hybrid Dual Channel compared to full Dual channel mode. The thing I always wondered. Why the hell do you need to spend a grand or more on a laptop to get a backlight keyboard. Even the late 90's cellphones had backlit keypads 🙄
I bought a VivoBook but the intel i7 version, but it also has the FullHD IPS display, but I noticed the screen has a yellowish tint to it, I compensated it by calibrating the colours by reducing the red and yellow to make it a cooler white, it is a bit better but the colours still aren't quite right. Did you notice this yellow tint on your sample?
Asus M509DA 15.6" Laptop AMD Quad Core R5-3500U M509DA-WB51-CB I picked this one up at Walmart , has 12 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD.is the internal the same as the one that you first show in the beginning? And if so is this still upgradable for an SSD or an m. 2? And with the 12 GB it has , it going to be a problem?
I don’t think mismatching memory sizes is that much of a concern. Shouldn’t the first 8gb run at dual channel with the extra 4gb running in single channel?
It's been my personal experience that the size isn't the issue, it's the timing and voltage that becomes a problem. I put 12 GB in an old HP laptop (it came with 4, I added 8) and it went into dual channel just fine and at the same speed.) Make sure it's either the same speed as the soldered RAM or faster and they tend to match up or the board will sometimes line 'em up.
Hi Lon. Any suggestions for a good Chromebook (SSD or eMMC 5.1, 128GB storage or more, excellent side or top facing speakers, Intel i3 or Ryzen 5 CPU, long battery life, backlit keyboard, IPS/Anti-glare screen) that you can recommend?
I have an old HP laptop with Core i3-2350M, and after I installed h264ify extension on Chrome, I can watch smooth 1080p60 (on external 1080 monitor via HDMI) on RUclips with merely 20-30% CPU use; without the extension it wouldn't handle it.
Hi Lon. Do you know if the issue with the RAM upgrade from 8 to 12 Gb is not happening when you have the Intel i7 8565U? Thanks. Keep up the excellent work.
If it's configured the same way this one is you'll have the same issues with RAM mismatching. But I haven't looked at that one so it could very well have a more traditional configuration.
Maybe consider borrowing this laptop from Asus again a month or two down the line and see how the benchmark score adjusts? There always seems to be performance updates right after cpu/gpu product lines launch (assuming the cpu these new laptops are coming out with is a new sku)
The fan appears to run constantly at about 1300rpm. This seems impossible to turn off and creates a constant whirl in the background. Yeah "its not as loud of others" but is amazingly odd the user isn't allowed to control the fan profile. I've tried a few 3rd party apps and none seem to work (and I can't access the bios either!). Additionally, default power options with Wifi are max power saving is stupid. My daughter was complaining that her wifi was broken and was almost convinved to buy a new computer. The trackpad sensetivity is also odd. I get jumps a lot. Outside of that, screen is awesome, and the keypad is SOLID! Such a step up from the soft flexy old asus's. Nor as thin profile as the zenbook (which doesn't give the same tactile feedback). The CHIP, awesomeness
Got this. But I personally don't like it because of the poor display. CSGO runs at 50fps only on lowest possible settings and at lower resolution (which I don't mind as I don't game much). Display is bad though. The screen color temperature changes from time to time on its own. And it has extremely bad viewing angles and colors. If you watch movies a lot you will notice that the colors aren't quite right unless you are positioned at the exact angle (specially in dark scenes). Even then the colors are washed out. The display is not better than my 8 year old HP laptop which I replaced with this. Apart from that it is alright (if you plan to use it for anything else except graphics). The keyboard is excellent to type on. But some people might not like it because the letters and keys are similar in color. So at some angles in the dark it seems like there are no letters on the key. And there is no backlight to help. The sound is loud and quality if the laptop is kept on a table. But if its on your lap, the sound is really bad and low volume. All the other ports are on the right side (except 2 USB on left side), if it matters. Positives: Performance for day to day tasks is excellent, as SSD and RAM does its job well. Super fast in booting. Battery life is okayish. USB-C is helpful cause most phones are also using it for earphones. Build quality seems fine.
Lon, on Amazon right now there is a Lenovo Thinkbook 13s / Core i5 i5-8265U - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD for $484.00. Is this a good comparison to the AMDs you showed midway thru this video? On surface it looks like the I5 is a good option for non-gaming. Agree?
What would you suggest I use to upgrade the memory and the SSD? Is there anything I could do to better the performance when I'm trying to run OBS Studios and Clone Hero for streaming on Twitch? I just would like to upgrade my Asus Vivobook if I could rather than getting a new computer.
Thanks for that. I use my laptop to process photographs in Lightroom, Photoshop and Luminar; would this laptop be okay for that? I also watch RUclips on it. Hope you can advise. Mike in Oz
2:05 why isn't the heat pipe connected to the cooler being so freaking close to it?! What was Asus thinking? It hurts cause aesthetically I like it way better than the equivalent Acer Aspire 5, but Acer did a great job in the last version, Asus last version of the Vivobook has a really similar cooling system if I'm not mistaken and I presume same problem with throttling, the last version of the Aspire 5 (which comes with Ryzen 5 3500u) have 2 RAM sockets with 4GBx2, which you can change to whatever you like and have dual channel running, instead of the 4gb soldered into the motherboard, also the heat pipe is connected to the cooler as it's meant to be, so I presume it'll have a lot less throttle problems than the Vivobook, as Lon reviewed it.
One thing to note that's come up in regards to the RAM - it looks as though if a larger module is installed the first 8 GB will run in dual channel with the balance running single channel. I would have rather saved $150 or so on something slightly inferior but it really does check alot of boxes for the money I paid. Sadly the price has went up $40 since my purchase. Still in the market for a sub $500 laptop for my sister for professional/streaming use. Will be watching these upcoming reviews closely haha.
I just bought this laptop. You mention the cost to be under $500.00. That appears to be on Feb. 5, 2020, prior to COVID-19, exactly two months passed from 2/5/2020, the cost (if you can find it), is approximately $645.00. PRICE GOUGING at it's finest. Laptop so far is fine
Are you still satisfied with that?
Although I'm not very excited by these Ryzen 3000 series (Zen+) laptops, I am interested in what the Ryzen 4000 series (Zen 2) might bring to the table. That's what I'm really looking forward to seeing.
Yup, also waiting for the Acer Swift 3 models with 4000 series :-)
@@DanielSekovski I preferred the look (and price).. but saw a pic of the new Acer and now they have a silver keyboard I really dont like that look at all....
@@methanoid amd are upping the prices on the 4000 series cpus as they know that they have an advantage over intel on this line. so the laptops won't be bargain prices.
I have Ryzen 5 3500u and it's work very smoothly.. Way more then the previous 7 gen Intel I had.
just ordered one on Amazon. This one have Ryzen 7 actually, costs $550
Was it good
Is it good for gaming

Anyway, this laptop appears to have big efficiency issues. Thermal throttling on a detuned processor when you get similar performance if not better performance out of the one step lower-tier processor? Big yikes.
yeah, my mom has one of these with the 3500u. Really awful cooling and the worst build quality of any laptop ive seen. I wanted to build a custom heatsink to fix it but I doubt I will be doing that anytime soon, I hate that damn thing so much.
@@jm036 Sup! Does your mom have this exact notebook or which one? I'm deciding what to buy, thanks!
@@lucianoinso Yes, she has the ASUS X512. If you need the APU to perform you should probably not buy it because the cooling cannot handle it. Also the plastic is really bad quality. No wonder they're so cheap.
@@jm036 Damn what a waste, it looked like it had a lot of potential, can't believe they ruin it by messing up the cooling, thanks for the advice!
@@lucianoinso nah the build quality is pretty good!
what seems to me as a design flaw is that exhaust air, instead of blowing outside free, it blows right into the display rim. this is unacceptable to me.
I noticed for the Rocket League demonstration, that you were using the 8bitdo controller. Is this a preferred controller for you or just used in reviews?
Great review, also. I appreciate your transparency and consistency in your reviews. Thank you!
Yes it’s my go-to now, very versatile !
You should have compared the Vivobook 3500u versus the Vivobook 2500u. I've got the Vivobook 2500u, and to be honest, performance isn't that great in games, as it's running single channel RAM. I regret not waiting another month for the Vivobook 3500u which not only seems to be faster here, but also has more features, such as an HD webcam and a fingerprint scanner.
This is actually a very very good technical review no bs i like it❤️👍
Most of those buying these are not big graphics or video editors which explains the soldered on memory. They are aimed at the people who will not be watching this video.
Feel very old school.....thanks for the review.
6 Hours is better than my Toshiba laptop xD Only lasts a little over 1 hour at the most just with youtube and discord open. So definitely gonna buy this laptop soon!
its also anti glare i believe, thats probably why its a bit less saturated but better whes light shines on it
nice, im glad i found your chanel, i needed a computer and i liked this one but i didnt know if they could run gta, but now i know thanks to you, im nkw almost sure it will run tekken 7 without a problem
Your review for the ASUS Vivobook was very useful. I consider to buy it because of budget and its performance.
I like the way you unbox a computer. You're the best sir🙂❣️ from Philippines 🇵🇭
A note on the Chromium Edge (I have a Skylake i7 6500U) and I can tell you, ZERO dropped frames at 108060. 1440 is fine as well with my network connection (40Mbps down) but 144060 will drop frames severely. 4K is possible but bad internet day is a no go. 4K will run but it will drp frames every now and again.
Back to the topic of this machine, happy to see more machines with the 3000 Ryzen Mobile appearing.
thx for the review, i'll buy this one for my mom, but i'm checking the upgrade one with 12gb ram and 1tb hdd already instaled, idk if the 12gb ram will be worse that the 8gb ram, but if asus sell it with 12gb, i think thats a must ... cheers from portugal ;D hard to find reviews like this on portugal ;D
Sempre compraste?
I prefer yours and @technopanda video very helpful. I guess in laptops it's just you guys. I can trust you guys, it's very simple to understand what you are saying
Are u recommend this screen ? Screen so important for me, thank you btw
The screen isnt the best its kinda bad
Screen not good.
When running Doom, which API did you select? You might get a much better performance if you run Doom using Vulkan than OpenGL with AMD.
We were running Vulkan
best review of this laptop.. WHY didn't it come at the top.. ❤❤
Have the 14inch model at the office. Yes there is a SATA drive kit bundled inside the retail box. I scratched my head wondering where the cable was until I called up the retailer.
I am happy with Edge right now. Here's hoping they don't screw it up.
Really happy with mine, thank you.
How long have you had it?
I just bought an Asus VivoBook online. It’s suppose to come with Ryzen 7- 12gb ram.. now watching your video I’m very curious to see how it runs. I admit it was an impulse buy, but for $600 I couldn’t pass it up. Also Best Buy has a great return policy if anything is wrong
how is it so far
Hi, how is the laptop?
Please compare between Asus vivobook 15 X512FL, i5 8Gen 8265U VS Asus vivobook 15 X512DA, Ryzen 5 3500U
Ryzen 4500U will make gaming to feel like a big jump on this ultraportables..im impressed it already can play most games in 1080p30
Hello Lon. Thanks for the videos !
The thing I always wondered. Why the hell do you need to spend a grand or more on a laptop to get a backlight keyboard. Even the late 90's cellphones had backlit keypads 🙄
the design on this is superb for the price
Very well made review, thank you for the information as to what I'll be getting into
I bought a VivoBook but the intel i7 version, but it also has the FullHD IPS display, but I noticed the screen has a yellowish tint to it, I compensated it by calibrating the colours by reducing the red and yellow to make it a cooler white, it is a bit better but the colours still aren't quite right. Did you notice this yellow tint on your sample?
Asus M509DA 15.6" Laptop AMD Quad Core R5-3500U M509DA-WB51-CB
I picked this one up at Walmart , has 12 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD.is the internal the same as the one that you first show in the beginning? And if so is this still upgradable for an SSD or an m. 2? And with the 12 GB it has , it going to be a problem?
How is the webcam? I am looking to purchase for Zoom purposes (teaching courses online). Thank you for your helpful video!
Very nice review! Informative and decent :D
I don’t think mismatching memory sizes is that much of a concern. Shouldn’t the first 8gb run at dual channel with the extra 4gb running in single channel?
Zosu good question.
Yep
@@Autobot032 Yep Voltage and timings can be the problem, it's a good idea to find the same module somewhere online to ensure stability!
Yeah it's a feature called flex mode, most modern cpus have it, when you have mismatched sizes the first 8gb will run in dual channel
the way he said nvme ssd lol. Great video bro.
Is it good for video editing apps & gaming?
hi thanks for the great video, learned a lot. one question if i want to upgreat my RAM what type should i use?

Hi Lon. Any suggestions for a good Chromebook (SSD or eMMC 5.1, 128GB storage or more, excellent side or top facing speakers, Intel i3 or Ryzen 5 CPU, long battery life, backlit keyboard, IPS/Anti-glare screen) that you can recommend?
thank you i might buy this computer this guide helped a lot
I have an old HP laptop with Core i3-2350M, and after I installed h264ify extension on Chrome, I can watch smooth 1080p60 (on external 1080 monitor via HDMI) on RUclips with merely 20-30% CPU use; without the extension it wouldn't handle it.
Best detailed laptop review. Thanks!
vivobook 15 vs dell vostro 3581 vs ideapad s145 vs ideapad 330
Which is the best?
Hi I'm new to your video. I'm just wondering if you got any laptop recommendations?
Can expand the RAM to 16gb, using 2 memories of 8gb? or, how much is the maximum they recommend for this model?
I love the computer in the background
I don't know what to buy anymore.
Lon - add to your reviews - electricity consumption ( under load and in normal load)
Make sure your driver's are up to date and has some crazy drivers
Thank you for including the Linux compatibility.
Can u tell why this good specs scored bad score than other laptops in benchmarks.
Is it worth buying??
Hello, I have seen a lot of comments regarding the poor display. Is it true that it doesn't have a good display? Thanks
Agree?
Good for non-gaming, yes but the AMD has about double the graphics performance.
What would you suggest I use to upgrade the memory and the SSD? Is there anything I could do to better the performance when I'm trying to run OBS Studios and Clone Hero for streaming on Twitch? I just would like to upgrade my Asus Vivobook if I could rather than getting a new computer.
Is this good for home use?. And is this a new laptop that has come out in 2020?.
amd laptops are the best now for power, you need to config the power plan, they are beating Intel in laptop APU's / cpu's
Awesome detalized review! tnx a lot! subscribed ;)
Great review like always ! looking for a good budget laptop, just for surfing the net and emails. any recommendations ? thank you!
What is your opinion about running Heavy professional softwares like EPANET, SAP or AUTOCAD, it will run correctly or there are going to be lags.?
Very good detailed review thanks
Thanks for that. I use my laptop to process photographs in Lightroom, Photoshop and Luminar; would this laptop be okay for that? I also watch RUclips on it. Hope you can advise.

I have a vivobook 14. CPU always throttle to 1.4 Ghz and under load to .4Ghz, just terrible.
great video
I had a query does this comes with a pre installed MS Office
