Do you have any suggestions on enclosing a very small side porch (4ft X 6ft) with black iron railing and 3 concrete steps? I'm enclosing this porch for 2 outside cats! Thank you!
Sounds like a fun new room enclosure project. I do not completely understand your situation but perhaps you can just screen in the area in for the cats if the climate allows?

earthquake proof, huh. lol. Great job, my critique in the future when doing major projects, spend the money and get some better tools, they will pay for themselves time and time again. Also, use some nails, screws shear when conditions arise, nails bend and conform with continued support.
Why does everything have to be better? The tools he had were just fine, what if he had just a nail and hammer? Would he need better nails and a better hammer? The job was done and it was good
Great video! Would the very first consideration in this project is shopping for the windows and then use the windows sizes as the first parameter before you design on Sketch-Up?
@@quocducnguyen Screws are easier to put in, and can be removed easily... and then can be reused, and modern coated deck screws have plenty of shear strength especially if you're using 2x6 framing like this.

Hey closed my back porch made it into dinning room but it's cold my furnace can't keep up. Might just install french doors and use it only for when we're about to eat? Idk any ideas
Thanks for sharing. The furnace system in your house was likely selected based on its ability to properly maintain the original house size. It may not be able to handle the additional space created from the new room addition. If that is the case it seems like adding a barrier like the doors you mention may be a good bet. Also the room can be better insulated if possible. Let us know how you proceed and thanks again.
Yes to have a have a continuous mounting surface for the wall plywood sheathing. In hindsight it might have been easier to use a 2"X6" top plate and just block out the area above it.

Where did the anchor bolts come from? At the start of the video they aren't there in the concrete, but they're there when you're ready to lay your sill plate?
@@HaploBartow yes if you check in the video description area of this video you will see links to all the videos for this porch to new room conversion project.
The wood framing part of the project was one of the less costly components. The cost of the lumber and fasteners were the main cost here and the room did not require a significant amount of framing wood.
I want to enclose my patio like this but my roof overhang goes about 4 inches into the patio where my wall would be (my patio has a slanted roof). Can I still enclose it? Do I just notch the 2x4s around the roof overhang?
Will, I am not sure I am clear of what you are asking. If you are referring to the beams that holds up your roof it would likely be easiest to build/frame the walls directly under the beams. That is what I did in this example. I used 2x6's instead of 2x4's so I had to notch the 2x6's to wrap around the beam which had a width of a 2x4.

Thanks for watching and your comment. I do not recall the cost for this particular room addition project. Regardless, every project is different and has its own set of variables. Things like geographic location, materials, existing conditions, and so much more factor into the overall cost. I would guess building a new room could cost could cost as little as a few to several thousand dollars. The cost range could be very widespread.
The framing materials for a small addition could be relatively inexpensive. to get a rough idea you can estimate of rough idea of the amount of lumber you will need and then price out the cost at a local wood supplier.
A plastic barrier was not determined necessary for this room addition project. There were several reasons for this including the type of flooring utilized and the condition of the original patio floor the new concrete floor was poured over.
I can't speak for any other specific project, but I would suggest a way to get a good idea would be to try to get a few estimates from reputable companies. Each region has different considerations, and every project has its own variables affecting cost. Best of luck with your project.
A DIY new room addition project cost will vary greatly depending on the unique circumstance and expectations of each individual build. The best way to get a realistic idea is to roughly design the room, estimate the materials needed, and price those materials and any additional services that may be required.
This room was built on top of an existing concrete floor after we poured additional concrete on top of it to make the new floor level with the living space floor. This is the video we made of that process that may help you determine if you are able to do something similar or not. Thanks ruclips.net/video/zrcwuhsHCA8/видео.html
I prefer screws as I feel they are better with securing over the long run. Many professional framers use nails though which hold up well when properly utilized. It takes more time and effort for screws but I do not mind that.
The overall material cost were not bad. This video shows the entire project in more detail and may give you a better idea of the potential scope of a similar project. ruclips.net/video/FbF8-9KVP74/видео.html
I have a brick porch that I'd like to turn into a 4 seasons room. About how much would it cost to have someone do that for? I wish that I knew how to do this stuff, it'd be so much cheaper and even possible. I have a feeling, I'll never get my dream of closing in my porch. :(
Thanks for watching. It is hard to estimate what your cost would be if you had converted your porch into a room addition. I am sure if you reached out to some local contractors they would be willing to give you a ballpark price point or detailed estimate. Best of luck.
The cost of a room addition could vary greatly depending on the unique variables and considerations of each project. I do not recall the cost for this particular room addition project but do not believe it would be helpful for someone planning a unique room addition project of their own. To get a better idea of what your project may involve you need to anticipate some of the project materials and expectations. It is easy enough to price out the materials once you have a materials list and that could be a good starting point for estimating the project cost. Best of luck with your room addition should you move forward.
The wall framing part of the project was relatively inexpensive. The cost of framing lumber is low and assuming you have the tools the only other cost would be the hardware (nails/screws).
It is hard to say the cost of a new room add on project as every project is unique and different contractors would have different approaches. Probably the best way to get a solid idea is too reach out to a few contractors and ask for an estimate for your intended home addition project.
Thanks for commenting. The total price of a room addition project will vary greatly depending the unique variables to each project. I hope the converting a porch into a living space videos were helpful for you.

Where did the anchor bolts come from? At the start of the video they aren't there in the concrete, but they're there when you're ready to lay your sill plate?

I see, there are other videos where you pour an entirely new concrete pad on top of the existing one.
@@HaploBartow yes if you check in the video description area of this video you will see links to all the videos for this porch to new room conversion project.
I'd like to build an enclosed front porch. I am curious if you needed a permit and inspection for this project.
Best of luck with your project. This particular project did involve a permit and building inspections.
MrKistel thanks! Looks good by the way!
Wondering what the cost turned out to be? (materials not time/labor/tools)
The wood framing part of the project was one of the less costly components. The cost of the lumber and fasteners were the main cost here and the room did not require a significant amount of framing wood.
Hi,
Did you have to get a permit for this?
Permits were issued for this project
Did you need to pull any permits for this?
Permits were pulled for this project to convert the porch into a new room addition.

Here is a link to a picture. (Hopefully you can open it) The roof comes under the patio.
Thanks for your help!

Sounds like an awesome project, keep us posted with how the process goes and thanks.
Really well done video thanks
Thanks for the flattering comment Rick, hope the video was helpful in some way for you.
Where do you operate from, what state?
Love this
My question is for the window opening?can I use 2x4 thats all I have, because I have a roof beam 3 1/2 x 7 1/4 and the size of the wall is 6'6" h x 8'8 1/4"(window size is 48"h x60"w)how can you help me? thanks for your kindness.
Be blessed..
Might be best to contact your local building department as they may have specific requirements. Best of luck.
Did you do the concrete slab
Thanks, and yes. The link to the video showing the concrete slab installation is in the video description area.
Nice review
Das ist ein gutes Video !
Vielen Dank
What was the size of yur patio. How much you spend for all
The new room was built within an approximately 10' by 12' covered porch area.
Alot of people asked you how much it cost you to build this ? Can you give a price please ?
Thanks for watching and your comment. I do not recall the cost for this particular room addition project. Regardless, every project is different and has its own set of variables. Things like geographic location, materials, existing conditions, and so much more factor into the overall cost. I would guess building a new room could cost could cost as little as a few to several thousand dollars. The cost range could be very widespread.
How much would something like this cost in material?
The framing materials for a small addition could be relatively inexpensive. to get a rough idea you can estimate of rough idea of the amount of lumber you will need and then price out the cost at a local wood supplier.
Why no plastic on concrete below 2x6 ?
A plastic barrier was not determined necessary for this room addition project. There were several reasons for this including the type of flooring utilized and the condition of the original patio floor the new concrete floor was poured over.
How much is a reasonable price for a job done like yours
I can't speak for any other specific project, but I would suggest a way to get a good idea would be to try to get a few estimates from reputable companies. Each region has different considerations, and every project has its own variables affecting cost. Best of luck with your project.
How did you level slop to slab?
I used a water level. I demonstrate this in the concrete pour video related to this project. The link should be in the video description
Thought this was framing in a patio not building a bomb shelter. That is solid asf.
Ya John, likely the strongest walls in the whole house. HA! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Why did you use 2 X 6 as opposed to 2 X 4 framing ?
To add thicker insulation in the walls and it also help with framing spacing based on how the existing roof beams were oriented.
Does anyone know how much this could cost? Of course, I only expect a rough estimate.
A DIY new room addition project cost will vary greatly depending on the unique circumstance and expectations of each individual build. The best way to get a realistic idea is to roughly design the room, estimate the materials needed, and price those materials and any additional services that may be required.
Supposed to nail it
Screws have a lot more structural integrity if installed properly
Can this be done on an existing concrete slab on my patio?
This room was built on top of an existing concrete floor after we poured additional concrete on top of it to make the new floor level with the living space floor. This is the video we made of that process that may help you determine if you are able to do something similar or not. Thanks ruclips.net/video/zrcwuhsHCA8/видео.html
How can I have the drawing, I have similar porch. This is great
Thank you. What drawing specifically are you looking for regarding the porch conversion?
you used screws on the whole job ?
what is stronger nails or screws ?
what last longer screws or nails ?
I prefer screws as I feel they are better with securing over the long run. Many professional framers use nails though which hold up well when properly utilized. It takes more time and effort for screws but I do not mind that.
I used nails but in many different directions so no nails will pop out
That should be perfect, nice work.
Screws are fine as long as they are not subject to shear loads.
unless they are SPAX
What did was the total cost to do this job?
$13000
Wow, that is built like a brick SH&%HOUSE. Good Job.
Thanks Pete
How big was this porch?
11'X12' ish
Do you remember how much this cost you to do I’m looking to do a project similar to this I hope you see this
The cost of a room addition could vary greatly depending on the unique variables and considerations of each project.
@@MrKistel thanks so much for you reply I will try adding the price of all the materials together to get a estimate on how much it would cost
A good video Thanks
Awesome, Thanks
Looks great... use nails next time ... a ton more shear strength
Thanks for the hardware consideration when framing.
What app did you use to design the porch?
The app was almost certainly SketchUp. www.sketchup.com/
What software did you use to design?
That software was definitely SketchUp. www.sketchup.com/
What are the dimensions of the porch? 10' x 15"?
Drew I think it was roughly 10' X 12'
how much did it cost roughly?
The wall framing part of the project was relatively inexpensive. The cost of framing lumber is low and assuming you have the tools the only other cost would be the hardware (nails/screws).
What does something like this cost if you paid a contractor to do it
It is hard to say the cost of a new room add on project as every project is unique and different contractors would have different approaches. Probably the best way to get a solid idea is too reach out to a few contractors and ask for an estimate for your intended home addition project.
what was the approximate price of this project? thank you.
Thanks for commenting. The total price of a room addition project will vary greatly depending the unique variables to each project. I hope the converting a porch into a living space videos were helpful for you.
