    I bought this at Costco last week, and had them load it into my GMC Yukon XL SUV, and it just fit. Each box weighs 215 lbs. I unloaded it myself by taking off the box lid and laying it onto my garage floor. Then I took each piece out and using the instruction manual, inventoried it to be sure all the pieces were there. I then carefully stacked everything onto the box lid. Did the same with box #2. Unlike this woman, I was fortunate that only one of my boards was slightly warped. As far as putting electricity inside this unit, simply run it underground and into the unit. If you put it on a slab, you can run your conduit to the outside, drill and install a conduit body, then pull the wire into the unit. That’s what I’m going to do. I built a perimeter foundation out of pressure treated 4x4’s. Make real sure you level and plumb your foundation. I agree that another person is necessary to build this. My sister and I built it in one day. I’m a contractor, so for me it was relatively easy, just tedious. My complaint is, they did not supply enough dust tape or silicone sealant. This woman should have contacted Yardistry, and requested a replacement door and vent hatch. For the amount I paid for this thing, you can bet I certainly would have.

      We just put ours together. I was geared up and ready for it to be difficult and my husband to lose his religion putting it together. He is very mechanically inclined, just seems like these days quality is lacking. My friend also purchased one and they had some similar issues putting as the channel host. I will have to say that we must have gotten the good batch because we didn't have any of these issues. It sounds like she got a bum set ,but kudos to her husband because they have made it work. I sincerely appreciate all the tips and I will put these into action.

    We just finished our Yardistry greenhouse yesterday. I watched your review prior to buying it, and I can say that this review is spot-on. The door latch can very easily lock you in (my wife installed an elastic band to keep it from doing so), our door is warped the same way, and our roof vent ended up sticking until I was able to force it more into the middle of the frame (it works fine now, but opens at cool temps in my opinion). That being said, we love our greenhouse. Thanks for the review and for the other videos!

      @@ourbackyardgarden Hello again -- this evening I discovered an easy solution for my wayward latch. I put a magnet just inside of the left hand "ear" of the latch bracket so that the loop of the sliding latch gets stuck there while the latch is open. This seems to keep it from sliding around and accidently locking the door. No guarantees, however, if the door shuts hard enough to pop it off.

    I have a home built greenhouse with a screen door that had a latch hook on the outside. One day it blew shut and the latch hook went into the eye. I was locked in. I managed to wiggle it enough to bounce it out. It happened one more time. After that I put the "eye" above the latch hook. That did the trick and I never got locked in again.

    We completed the assembly of our Yardistry Greenhouse (purchased through Costco on sale for $1199 in September 2023). Leigh has done a fair review of the structure and it's pros and cons. I would have liked to see a second vent on the opposite side of the greenhouse so I could run a far to either exhaust or pull in air. We had enough warp (sadly) in the door to pull through a 14-guage electric cord. I have a 1500W Bio-Green Palma heater that I have just now started using, so I cannot comment on whether it will be adequate. My door is warped enough top to bootom that I may put a bolt at the top to decrease the gap and thus the loss of warmth overnight.
    Along with the lack of a second vent, I would have liked"
    The long lower shelf to be 20" vs only 16",
    A Dutch-door (many owners have modified their Yardistry door and said it is an easy mod).
    Thicker mm poly panels.
    Having looked at many, MANY options - including building with found materials, metal-frame structures, grow tunnels, we concluded this is the best for us to initially get into a greenhouse. We are in zone 8b and will use this mostly for extending the growing season as opposed to intensive year-round vegetable production.

    My typical base, leveling (digging/filling), compact with plate vibrator, 3.5" concrete with rebars. This time trying something new, no digging, no compacting, no digging, no concrete. We'll see how it goes in a few years but so far so good.

    • @ourbackyardgarden
      @ourbackyardgarden  4 месяца назад

      We didn't have to dig. But because we built on a swale we had to seriously raise and retain. Driving the rebar I to the foundation base I opposing directions really did great. The greenhouse base then had a nice surface for deep deck screws and hurricane ties.

  • @givemeaminutetothink
    @givemeaminutetothink Год назад +3

    Oh wow, I guess I got lucky with mine. I actually watched y’all’s video on making the base to see if I thought I could do that part by myself, then went ahead and got it from the floor of my local Costco at just under $1300 I think it was. I just clicked on this to see your thoughts, wasn’t aware it had been such a headache to get it in!
    I built mine by myself, as the first structure I ever built from top to bottom. The only thing I needed help with was to lift the back and front walls from where I had built them to where I needed to install them. My only previous building experience is a handful of raised garden beds and a garden fence. I will say that a large work area was super helpful for assembly, I put mine together in an emptied out two car garage and that made assembly way smoother, I think. I basically used the level floor of the garage, rather than trying to bother with work tables. There was some crawling around required haha.
    I didn’t have your warped wood issues for the most part, only really noticed some on the boards that made up the shelf tops actually. My vent opens fine, and is actually my favorite feature of the greenhouse. As for getting locked in, the first thing I bought for the greenhouse was a lock, not to secure anything important inside, but to lock it in the open position while I’m inside. Like you experienced, I was worried about getting trapped inside. I also purchased a door chain type lock to close the door while I’m inside if I don’t want to be interrupted, haha.
    I followed your approach to the base and love it, had to dig it in a little bc the site I chose was ever so slightly sloped.
    My only complaint so far is that the vent is not water tight so when it rains while I am in the greenhouse, even when the vent is shut, I get rained on. I do plan on keeping a tub of water inside the greenhouse for convenience, bc as you said there is no built in way to thread in a hose. Luckily my chosen site is near enough to a water source I can run a hose into the bucket when it gets low.
    I don’t know, I have lots of ideas for ways to use the space and it’s super exciting to think about the potential a structure like this has. Hopefully once your frustration with the issues wears off, you will also get excited about having it.
    (It seems you are partially there already, since you recommend it with understandable caveats. I’m also glad that Costco helped make it right, even though it sounds like they didn’t have to and it was really on Yardistry to step up.)

    Costco ran out of this item and told us it would be at least next year. Found it at Home Depot (for $2000) not $1389. We bit and ordered it though HD for in store delivery, they wanted $79 more for curbside. Got it home and my pearl of wisdom will be - Do the inventory! As you are doing it, segregate the items into the various steps of assembly. Ie: front panel, rear panel, sides, roof, and shelves. It makes it so much easier to find a part when you’re ready for it. The HD version does not come prefinished! Regarding fit and finish- wow most joints are held together with one screw. I put the roof joists up today and the are all out of wack. I’m spending tomorrow figuring out what got out of square I guess. The base was ok, but if the surface you mount it too isn’t perfect, I suspect the imperfections telegraphed to the roof structure so hopefully loosening the floor tie downs will allow me to adjust things. Over all, I’m really not sure if it was worth the money. It feels flimsy. I’m building ours in a wind protected spot, and I would worry if it was out in the open in a real storm. Also, I don’t think it can handle much of a snow load.
    I built it by myself, so it can be done.

    @dustyflats3832 Год назад +1

    Wow, not good to get locked in. Maybe hang a weight on the flip handle or find something to put inside the cylinder bolt to snug it up so it doesn’t slide so easy. I just watch The Rusted Garden and he had a problem with the auto vent window catching also. He said he needed to shave it down where it was catching. The warped door, I wonder if a tension bar would pull it in, the adjustable type that are used on screen doors to prevent sagging.
    I’m glad you showed the bottom vent as I thought that was permanently open, but couldn’t tell on other video. That has to have an auto vent for me as it’s cold here, or a manual cover.
    Well I like the size as they are easy to heat. I recently got a remote temp/hygrometer with alarm and was surprised to watch the changes and how dry it was with no plants. We have a lean-to we built from scraps. We will enlarge it a bit by a couple feet for a bit more room, add a heat sink in floor, vents, insulated wall bottoms and on back wall to north, and a storm door with screen. I wish it was done as the seedlings are taking over the house.
    Once you get the kinks out you will love it. Thank you for review.

      Thanks for watching and offering great ideas! For the lock, right now I'm just tying it off until I find an old cylinder or old lock just to hang there. We finally found a surface bolt to fit and it closes the warp. That vent though....what a pain. I'm not willing to shave it because it swells and contracts dramatically. And it already has leaking issues. Once you shave it it's hone forever so I'm just opening it manually. I watched rusted gardens install, and honestly I can't say I agree with several things he did. We are determined to work out the kinks for sure!

      Thank you for watching! We did reach out to yardistry after we quickly realized parts were missing. They were great and promptly sent the parts being mostly hardware. After that it got tricky. When we started working on it we needed support on the instructions. I called and my husband called. We got 2 different answers on the same question. We figured it out on our own. Then we had another question and they told us to take pics and they would TRY to get back to us the same day. We quickly realized while they were nice it was just a lot of lip service and them reciting the written manual. Then the horror of all the warped pieces. They sent them out but were worse than the original. It caused us tremendous delays and construction went on for weeks because we had to wait Then tweak our own schedule. They had to carrier ship a new door and vent. Both way worse. So we installed the surface bolt. I highly encourage an eye hook for the inside while working in it. Wind grabs it and it swings open. FYI support is only available Monday to Friday. Good luck please show us your pics when done!!

      Thank you for your reply. My Yardistry green house is now stuffed (65 6 inch pots) with all the tender plants I have transplanted into pots from my flower gardens. I live in northern Utah and frost and snow are just a few days away. I'm wondering how you water pots in your greenhouse? I am using a small electric oil filled heater to heat the space that seems to be doing a good job - temperatures are hovering around 55 degrees F. I also have a small tower fan to keep the air moving. I have added several black plastic shelving systems to increase storage area. As for getting locked in the greenhouse (I have extreme claustrophobia) I have drilled out the holes for the screws that hold the clasp to the frame and change to bolts with wingnuts on the inside. If my wife or myself gets trapped in we can just remove the wingnuts and push the door open. Also, I have treated all the wood surfaces with several coats of linseed oil. I love this little greenhouse and I am having a lot of fun working with it.@@ourbackyardgarden

      Thank you for watching! Here's my honest thoughts on your question. Here in nj, we haven't seen too much snow lately. But our situation is, our yard is a micro climate. Snow melts rapidly. Since we installed this in the fall, we had zero snow to speak on. It does however leak when it rains. We do get high wind though. We have a Playlist of the construction and base build. I will say, the foundation and base are key to this structure living through wind. The structure has held up well so far. I honestly will be happy if I get 10 years out of it. To grow in it all winter would request a small heater though. I sure hope that helps!

    This is a natural wood product and one can expect warping. To minimize this it should be coated with penetrating sealer like Penofin, as soon as it is taken out of the box. Then keep a taro over the material as you are building. The fender washer is OK but just squeezing the chain link a bit would accomplish the same job. A simple hook would keep the latch in place. I think the latch wasn’t all the way down when it moved over. If you only own a car you shouldn’t try this type of work. I ordered one and plan on assembling it by myself. They also will replace items that cannot be used because of warping. I would say that all the cutting and making it from scratch would be easy but take more time than is worth. So the price is worth it at least to me. Everyone has to know what their own time is worth.

      Hi Luis thank you for watching. For our situation I can't really say because, we needed parts sent at least 3 times. In a perfect situation with all parts good, a handy person with a helper can do assembly in 2 days, maybe less. Keep in mind it's critical to have a level foundation and timber base. Please review our Playlist we cover everything!

    • @ourbackyardgarden
      @ourbackyardgarden  Год назад +2

      Hi James thanks for watching! We have an entire Playlist for the greenhouse!! We built this on a slope so we leveled the foundation using trap rock and cinder dust. We covered that for retention with fabric. Then the structure base is 4x4 on front and back with 4x6 on the sides for wiggle room and wide stability. We secured that to the to the foundation by driving rebar through in opposing angles. So now it's slightly raised allowing for water drainage! I hope that made sense 😃

      @@tiffanycrain1791 hi Tiffany thanks for watching. I'm not really sure if I regret it to be honest. Overall I'm happy to have a warm enclosed space to mix soil and sow seeds. Its quite peaceful. I definitely expected more from it. But I now feel like, any greenhouse is going to be a demanding learning curve and have its issues. If your willing to heat it and give circulation it can be a great purchase for the price. I price shopped many and a good one to withstand wind is super expensive. It's a good beginner greenhouse and if I get 10 years out of it I'll be happy. It's critical for longevity to be installed properly level and slightly elevated to avoid sitting in moisture.
