So that's less then 90 dollars a month for a mortgage? In new York even? Damn, I know this was back in the day but I didn't think inflation came that hard over the years
Oh dude...inflation has been HORRIBLE since the mid 1970's! You have to remember, this was New York, yes. But a suburb in QUEENS which was the low rent district. Not Manhattan. But yes, my own parents mortgage where I grew up less than an hour outside of NYC was $78 a month on a 20 year mortgage. When I built my own house in 2003, my payments were $1,200 a month on a 30 year mortgage! Same size house in the same state! This was from 1971. Here are some fun facts for you. The cost of a new Cadillac Fleetwood (which was the top of the line) in 1971 was $7,700. That's $54,000 in todays dollars. The cost of a new Cadillac Escalade (their current flagship model) $80K to $105K depending on options! A gallon of gas then? 36 cents a gallon which is $2.52 in todays dollars. I need not tell you the current price of gas. A gallon of milk in 1971? 50 cents which is about $3.50 today. A gallon of milk today? $4.59 for the store brand. Name brands are more of course! I should also point out that in Archie Bunker's day, one salary was enough to support a spouse and a kid(s). Today, middle class families usually have both spouses working, sometimes more than one job to make ends meet. Think we were better off THEN? Or NOW?
Lol imagine a group of neighbors so concerned about black folks living in their neighborhood they'd donate several hundred or possibly a grand a piece to try to avoid them living there.
