Hi everyone! I just wanted to thank everyone who let me know that two of the features listed in this video exist in the PSP release in some form. These are the flattening of the map and the existence of the trajectory prediction, which existed in a more limited capacity on the PSP version.
That said, in order to make sure that the comments aren’t littered with these corrections, I will be immediately removing new corrections starting today to ensure that other comments don’t get buried by repeated subject matter.
And again, I appreciate everyone who has pointed this out!
oh okay I thought I was mistaken. glad to know it was actually the other way around 🤣 thank you for addressing this. 🙏 great video I can't wait to put another 100 hours into this game lol
I think it would have been amazing if you had a deeper knowledge of the previous two versions of the game (I am referring to the original SNES in the 1990s apart from the PSP version) so that you could actually make a good comparison of the two. I liked your review, I am very hyped about the game as I am a veteran of the two previous versions, I just miss that better understanding of the mechanics that other streamers have from having played both versions a lot throughout the years. Other than that, well done and thank you for the review.
@@bastian_1991 I wish I did too! There’s nothing more that I would love than to deliver a perspective that can help everyone!
@@bastian_1991 my thoughts exactly 💯
i need ogre tactics but with PVP
It feels like the developers really are improving everything for the better! Congrats for the early copy :D
Thank you! The game definitely feels different, especially with the new features. It’s not just a simple remaster! I’d probably say it’s more like a remake of sorts!
not gonna lie, I'm gonna miss having a Lich with 4 different spell lists. Necromancy, Draconic, Dark and Lightning.
I'm happy that they released this on the Switch. Looking forward to spending hundreds of hours on this one.
The flat view was already on the PSP, just saying. Same goes for Trajectory Projection; learned by archers and can be used for projectile spells back in PSP if you equip it. I cannot wait to play Reborn already
Thanks! A couple of people in the comments mentioned both, though trajectory projection is now present for everyone without a skill, even when throwing rocks
I'm really looking forward to this.
SQUEENIX needs to let Matsuno have a real budget to make a new game again.
What I'm hoping is that this release is a test to see if there's a market for a full on FF Tactics remake.
I hope so too...I loved FF Tactics!
While I wouldn't want to keep people's hopes up, I don't doubt that this is Square Enix's way of finding ways to work with him! I'm thinking that Matsuno might still be a bit reluctant to work with them because of his work in FFXII that really took at toll on him. But after working with Yoshi-P on the Ivalice content in FFXIV and now this, I'm hoping that he'll find some comfort working with the talented folks there!
@@BacklogBattle this is exactly what I'm thinking. He's made a lot of talented friends since ff12 that would form one hell of a team that would take a ton of pressure off of him. With the resurgence of his type of game the last few years I hope they and he give it another go one day.
He could make something truly amazing with modern tech.
This is an EXCELLENT preview, full of a ton of information I have not seen anywhere else and lots of details that matter to me. Bravo!
Btw, I'm a long time tactics game player and very familiar with Tactics Ogre, having put countless hours into the PSP version. So for me, this was exactly the kind of info I wanted from a preview video.
This is awesome! I’m glad you found the preview informative! That was the goal all along!
Big fan of Tactical RPGs here o/
I'm playing again Final Fantasy Tactics War of The Lions while i wait for this game, and man! I'm really hyped after this video! So many modernizing features, that makes me feel even more excited for a possible FFT "Reborn". Congratulations for the awesome Preview!
I forgot that FFT was leaked in an Nvidia doc a while back, which is possibly going to get the same treatment! And thank you! Glad you’re hyped!
The only Tactics Ogre I ever played was Knight of Lodis which was probably my favorite GBA game of all time. Really excited to see this one.
Play it if you ever get the chance, all the Ogre Battle games connect in some ways so it is interesting to see what characters get put in to each game.
Amazing preview video! From all the channels I follow, I think you are the only one doing a so in-depth preview of this game. I'm really excited to play it, I love SRPGs so this is a day-one buy for me.
Btw, I ended up buying Trails From Zero for the Switch thanks to your advice and I have zero regrets. The game looks and run amazingly. Thank you.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad that you’re enjoying Zero! I’ve no doubt you’ll enjoy Tactics Ogre Reborn as well!
This is so promising. I loved this game on the PSX, as well as Final Fantasy Tactics. FFT took SO much from this game and improved on it in some ways, but it also removed some things that I really liked. I've been thinking about replaying Tactics Ogre for years, and I'm glad I kept putting it off, because this looks amazing. This isn't a lazy remaster, and it seems like everything I love about the game has been preserved and maybe even improved upon.
Great in depth video ! Amazing writing and editing as always 👍
Thank you so much! It's a lot of work hahaha
Wow the game actually looks way better than I thought it did based on the trailers
Tactics ogre is my favourite game ever and I’ve been playing the psp version for about a decade, I can’t describe how happy I was when I heard the announcement for reborn! Can’t wait to play the ultimate version of the best strategy rpg ever created -in my opinion
At least for the PSP version, the random battles were optional. Just press cancel at the party setup screen before the battle begins and you don't have to fight.
Granted I didn’t play the PSP version a lot, but I didn’t know that! Good to know!
I have only played the PSX version, I still own the disk for it. I have been playing Reborn and I have to say it feels like catching up with an old friend you haven't seen in years!!!! I fucking love it! It looks absolutely beautiful. I do miss the random battles as that was a great place to recruit some of the more interesting non human allies (great place for early lizard men). So at first I was expecting to get into random battles, but after going over tiles a few times and..not having any, I realized they must have been removed. The new training system is not what I expected either and I accidentally went into my first training battle with only 3 people!!!! I somehow managed to come out alive....with all 3! That was one hell of a battle.
The main thing that has been tripping me up so far is the way that they have changed the names. Of almost everything and everyone. What in the hell was the purpose of that? You play as Denim, your sister is Kachua. Cardinal Barbatos leads the Kingdom of Gargastan. WHY WERE THESE THINGS CHANGED?
I’m glad you’re enjoying the game! Must be quite a trip!
To the name change: Atlus actually localized the PS1 version, which was publishing a bunch of titles they didn’t publish in Japan at the time. When Square Enix decided to make the PSP Remake, with the supervision of its original staff and Yasumi Matsuno, they went in and corrected the localization names in that release. It must be trippy knowing these people and places in a different name though!
@@BacklogBattle Ah, well that clarifies things a bit. Yes it is very strange as I have played the original version so many times (more than I would care to count) but have never played the PSP version as I never owned one. So all the changes to the names is a bit... off. Even the fact that the sprite for the Witch class is now being use for the enchantress is... odd. And the enchantress sprite is apparently used for the witch class. Why would you swap them????
This will be my first outing with Tactics Ogre, but I've been a srpg fan since FF tactics and Disgaea 1. The way you talk about it it seems this will blow all the other srpgs this year out of the water. Looking forward to it.
I initially played this game on the PS1, and while I loved the new art, translation etc of the PSP version the class-wide level system and the amount of grinding needed to level up spells bounced me off it hard, so I'm really glad that this is coming out and I'm excited to play it
For anyone that is interested in this franchise, the channel Coffee Potato is also reporting news about Tactics Ogre Reborn as well as several analysis on the classes and other very interesting stuff! I hope you can make a collaboration.
Ooo! Let me check them out! Thank you for sharing!
@@BacklogBattle Thank you for also making this videos regarding JRPG. You have gained a new subscriber!
I got recommended this video after watching a CoffeePot video on Tactics Ogre, funnily enough =]
Fernando.
its good to see scouting this really takes advantage of the battle parties feature so depending of the enemy battallion you can decide if you send a undead killing party or a beast and dragon one 🤔
Very useful for sure!
Reborn feels like an amalgamation of SNES LUCT, PSP LUCT and Knight of Lodis
Very excited for November 11
That’s pretty accurate!
This sounds great! I've probably have 100's of hours on the original PS1 and later PSP version of Tactics Ogre. Looking forward to the multiple play throughs to get all the special characters.
I’m super excited for this … the QoL upgrades sound fantastic
This is amazing. I do hope that they would do Ogre Battle as well
That thumbnail tho. 👌 thanks for the info, maybe I'll pick it up after triangle strategy
Thank you for this preview! I'm one of the people who haven't played this game, but preordered it because I've heard so many good things (and there was a preorder bonus lol). Thank you also for the chapters, I think I'll come back to the explanation of new features after I get to play the game myself...whenever that'll be. I recently realised my backlog has quite a few tactics JRPGs that I might want to play before this one xD
Well then, here’s another awesome tactics RPG to add to that once you clear some room! 😉
@@BacklogBattle Yes, I'm so excited!😁 I actually made a whole excel sheet for my backlog the other day, and it actually brought me a lot of joy to know that I have many different and great games to look forward to!
Thank you your review was most detailed!
Thank you! I hope you check out the full review in the coming weeks!
My birthday month is so effin stacked!
I played this tactics orge game in my gba in the past ahhh childhood memories so great
I think you’ll love this one!
Honestly I was always more of an Ogre Battle fan, but I’m giving this a try since I love strategy games and really liked the GBA Tactics Ogre.
Hope you have a good time!
March of the Black Queen is one of my favorite games. I was torn on the tactical games, as they felt like a less polished version of Final fantasy tactics. I enjoyed them, but they were rough around the edges.
So stoked for this, really hope it works on Steam Deck @ release. One of the few games I couldn't bare to part with the physical copy even tho i have no way to play the disc anymore.
It should work on Steam Deck!
Amazing preview, Nice work as allways! Thank you very much . Mega fan of tactics games but never played this one , gonna buy it! 👌
This makes me wish that "Person of Lordly Caliber" got a small remake as well.
But I can only Dream.
Tactics Ogre Reborn is freaking amazing. I picked it up at launch and it is just as good as I remember it. The last time I played Tactics Ogre was in 1997...ish. So a refresher course is very helpful. I'm playing it on the PS5 *physical.
Addendum- The graphics look smudgy? Not on a PS5 running @4K it doesn't. The characters, environments, ect all look incredibly sharp and everything is so much more vibrant than Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together on the original PSX. I don't get this running right with pixels. Had they turned it into some soulless 3d polygonal thing I wouldn't have bought it. The original game not only worked well but it still plays perfectly as does Final Fantasy Tactics. The games presentation is flawless.
OMG! that party level cap is so useful! cause I've been re-playing FFT: WotL and after going for Dark Knight my Ramza is over 60+, so enemies are stronger while my other teammates are still in their 30, which is so hard.
That Random Battle is so annoying, thank god they remove or fixed that!
i hope when they remake FFT: WotL this new stuff gets added too.
From my understanding, in the older versions, if certain characters reached a certain level it would increase the difficulty tier of all of the enemies right?
@@BacklogBattle yes basically lol
I’ve seen some people complain about the level cap in the comments here and this sounds like a fix to me!
Good preview. I can't wait to check this game out. I'm a 90's kid and always heard about this series but never got the chance to play it.
I don't know ... $50USD is pretty steep, and then $60USD for a soundtrack. $20 (like Persona 4, IIRC) would be an instant buy. $50 is like Square Enix holding me at gunpoint. And from what I understand, there's no new content. If there was, perhaps that could justify the price. Niche case, but there's PPSSPP. There's an HD texture pack for the game. I bought it long ago for PSP. Maybe I even had it on my Vita, which is in storage. I might wait for a significant sale. At any rate, great video!
Understandable, especially since you’ve played it before. I hope you get to experience this one sooner or later. The changes feel substantial that I think you’ll find it an interesting alteration from the PSP version
@@BacklogBattle No doubt. Based on your preview here. I'd tend to agree. It's just the price isn't far off from a new and/or AAA title, and for a game that's so old, with possibly so little new to offer--apart from incremental improvements you mention here--the price tag really doesn't trend with other releases, like Chrono Cross, La Pucelle, Rhapsody, or P4. If they added substantial new content, like units, maps, or other activities, then perhaps. Interface changes and/or improvements and AI improvements are sort of "under the hood." All that said, you spoke very positively in your video, and it may convince me to pull the trigger. Thanks!
i used to really like this game when i was little. I wish they remake.
It might not look too different, but I can assure you that it’s a different game from a gameplay standpoint
Tactics Ogre, alongside with Final Fantasy Tactics/Advance are my favorite TRPG and Recently Triangle Strategy got me hooked again in this genre. I'm happy to play this game again, I played the original version and it was a nightmare 🤣, pretty unbalanced and so difficult, specially because I was 9, but no regrets the game got me into this, I want to see the Trilogy of FTT because it deserves it.
Great preview! This looks great. I’ve never played the original and will be finished with triangle strat here soon.
Liked and subbed!
I'm so fucking excited for November. God of War and Tactics Ogre HYPE!
I forgot to preorder the CE for God of War Ragnarok! 😭
Your content just gets better and better 😍
Thank you so much! I always try to improve every single time!
This is great. I was skeptical at first thinking this might just be simple reskin. Glad to know that it is'nt.
I loved the original Tactics Ogre! I remember how difficult it was on the playstation and I am looking forward to experiencing the story again after all these years. Is permadeath still a thing? I remember always being super paranoid about the health of my units and hoping "the next shot won't kill them"
Yes, permadeath is still very much in play although it's a little different. There is no more insta-death. What I mean is anytime a character goes down a timer will appear above them. All you have to do is get one of your characters in close proximity to the downed teammate and revive them. You can do this with an item anyone can carry and it's relatively cheap or a cleric with the skill can also save them. I believe from much farther away.
I will say this, in my 10 or so hours in I haven't had a single death. The reason for this is I played the original game quite a bit and I know basically what I'm doing. Like using items to buff my characters so they maul everything.
Addendum- I picked up Tactics Ogre the day it dropped for the PS5 (physical). The reason I'm not much further is I work a lot and my backlog of games is getting ridiculous.
The PS1 version was the first game I ever played. I played the psp version for well over 20,000 hours. The idea that this game is getting official love just… it’s honestly making me cry thinking about it. It’s stupid I know, but this game has been with me my entire life.
Dude, 20,000 hours??
@@matth1641 Yup. I mean the remake game alone had tons of content alone from the main campaign, and a lot more from the post-game scenarios.
@@fernandozavaletabustos205 I never played any version of it, so I'm unaware lol. 20,000 just seemed to be an insane amount of time. If the game has that kind of replayability then that's awesome.
Dang! I hope you have a blast with this one then!
@@matth1641 I took the PSP with me even to school lol. Tactics Ogre went literally everywhere with me.
I'm looking to playing this on my Steam Deck, since it should make up for some of the controller restrictions that comes with the Switch.
I am kind of curious if this will allow mouse and keyboard play on PC
Not sure if you mentioned it but the PSP version also had the top down view and zoomed out, the scoutinf view is amazing but there's a lot still that I dont know.
I hope its worth the full price and that the scaling works well for post gamr
One thing I could see myself missing from random encounters is that you could "recruit" the enemies. Where will I get my lizardmen now ? I assume you can't recruit training units you will face. Otherwise, superb video I'm so hyped for this game. With TO Reborn and Pokémon coming, November is gonna be great
I believe you can still do that in training battles! We’ll check and confirm for you and I’ll include it in the final review!
@@BacklogBattle Thanks, much appreciated
@@BacklogBattle please do let us know
with all the added new options/features makes the game fresh(er) but also easier than the original, now i need fftactics war of the lions to be re-done this way
Maybe that’s next?
Can't wait until this is released. While I'm not quite sure I like the concept of a "party level" so that you can't exceed this (e.g. grind to make battles easier) the fact if you're not leveled up you could be on your way to a fat game over screen.
I can't wait for this 😁😁😁😁
All these old games getting shuffled forward and given love makes me hopeful that one day whoever holds the old Camelot IPs will make a new Shining Force game true to the originals.
As a fan of Shining Force, you just made my spouse really happy with the sheer mention of the name. I hope SEGA pays attention!
You did show the changes they're making to the shop, but I only hope that they do apply those changes to the crafting option, CRAFTING IS PAINFUL, I had no idea they announced a new Tactics Ogre, I've been playing it to this day on my VITA for years... Anyways, as I was saying, crafting ingots consumed so much time.
The changes to the AI look really cool, and okay, the adjustment for level party seem like a nice way to stop players from cheesing the game, I play with 3 archers most of the time, and with that you can basically cheese the entire game if you equip STRENGTHEN skill + STRENGTHEN from consumable, Canopus becomes a hitman basically.
All of the adjustments feel really good so far, and unfortunately I can’t talk about crafting until the review
Amazing video and amazing game! I can't wait to play it as I never finished the original.
Cannot wait for this game! I played the PS1 version back in the day, but that was a long time ago. lol
Ages even!
I'm upset they didn't give the world a new version of Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen.
I'm totally getting this before Triangle strategy. This looks better to me
I could buy it for PS4, but this game fits perfectly the Switch's vibe. Already pre-ordered mine. And I'll be replaying it for the 4th time I think Lol.
That’s why I chose the Switch!
Great preview! I am super excited for this game and can't wait to play it. I've reached the final dungeon on PS1 and PSP but never managed to finish it due to the time & grind requirements. I always considered the PSP the definitive edition but I believe it was dethroned.
I can honestly say that this is indeed the definitive edition of the game!
maybe this game will lead to a proper sequel instead of a 3rd remake. lets keep our fingers crossed. "thumbs up" me if you agree on seeing a sequel.
I played Tactics Ogre on Ps1. While I like the Ogre battle series, it was so grindy. At some point I just overleveled myself bulldozed the game rather than having periodically stop when I hit a wall where the enemies were more powerful.(I'd overlvl my team, then have my main character kill one everyone he could to get mvps to score a free lvl up, and then have rest of my team catch up later.) If your characters were dead when the battle ended, they were dead period. it was fairly unforgiving so you had to make sure you had a character who could revive characters. If a character who's a NPC gets killed during a fight before you can recruit them, you never can get them. This happened periodically too and felt cheap and crappy. You needed to save often to avoid being screwed out of items and characters.
This was compounded by a really bogus set up. If you entered large structure where you had engage in multiple fights, your health from the previous battle carried over, but your mp did not. So your mp resets to zero and you would still be hurt. This puts you at a serious disadvantage especially in the later sections where you figth through dozens of areas.Particularly the final act of the game,as it's like 20+ fights to reach the last boss. You always want to save before you enter a prolonged fight. (FF tactics had these kind of fights, but they were only 2-3 fight in a row besides the final gauntlet.) I got stuck against the final boss as he and his minions were special classes that were overpowered, as I wasn't powerful to win and had start the entire gauntlet over...so I came back lvl capped and armed to the teeth...I refused to take another L. I smashed everything with a vengeance.
You could completely destroy the game if you used necro and retissue. (There's a bunch of gamebreaking stuff in the secret dungeon Hell's gate.) You'd kill your lvl 50 characters, original games lvl cap and use necro to revive them as skeletons or ghosts. With the spell retissue you'd make them human again, which they'd be lvl 1. You could easily lvl them back to the cap as their stats were same outside of their hps and mps. (Those halved if I remember correctly.) Your characters would one shot anything and move multple times before the enemies would. (If you lvl a character up as a ninja or swordmaster, their will drop weight faster than a super model, and move stupidly fast.)
You couldn't do this to named characters as it counted as they died for the story, but you could make snapshotted weapons and give them to them. Snapshot transformed a character into a sword of their element, with all their stats. So I'd make character with a cool name and the correct element, grind them up a bunch of levels to kill them and make them a sword for my hero. (I usually picked fire, so I'd have a fire sword named Justice.) Your hero then could completely break people's faces with this grossly overpowered weapon. You could only get 3 snapshots(As the game only has 3 slots for them custom weapons to exist. If you used gameshark to cast more, it would turn out as one of the existing weapons you'd made regardless of how powerful the chaarcter was you killed.) so you wanted make them really good. If you wanted make a light weapon, you'd need make a chaarcter an angel to snapshot them with it. If you wanted a dark weapon, you needed make them a ghost.
Late in the game there's spells that hit the entire battlefield. The crappier version is forbidden magic. It hits your own team and the enemies. Despite needing certain chaarcters and a whole side quest to unlock them, they aren't really worth it. The shields you get to unlock the hidden shrines are more useful than the magic itself. There's a light spell that hits all enemies Starion(Starlight)and kills the undead instantly. Then there's dragon magic which hits all enemies such as Tempest(There was a dragon spell of each element). Normally you'd have wait for your mp to refill to cast these powerful spells, but there was a support spell charge swordmasters and other could use. They could cast on themselves or others to give them a bunch of mp. You could then just nuke the entire battlefield from a safe distance and not worry about the enemies as the bulk of them would die in a spell or two.
Tactics orge was a mixed bag, as I can imagine many who played final fantasy tactics(which both games were made by same people.) would have seen it as a step down. Between the random difficulty spikes, classes have wacky requirements(having kill enough people or not too many.) barring you from advancement, and many missable items and characters it was a very unforgiving experience to those who were unprepared. I got the worst ending to both Ogre battle (Hanged man) and Ogre tactics both times I completed them for the first time to pour salt in the wounds, but I always played these games without guides the first time. I learned the hard way how the game is really played heh. Hopefully the remaster grinds down some of the hard edges of the original game. It was a solid game with alot going on, but it's steer learning curve and unforgiving nature likely turned away many players. I may give the remaster a look as I haven't played the original in ages and ignored the PSP version.
Omg this was my favorite rpg back in the day more so than any of the final fantasys. I tried for years to buy the original but couldn't find it anywhere so I gave up.
I may buy a switch just for this game
Honestly that’s a really good reason to get one!
Looking forward to the game. I like the no random battle idea. I don't like the level cap idea, I think it's stupid. I think the game will be ok overall. I still prefer the SNES/PS1 version.
One thing I'm worried about regarding to the removal about random battles is how you're going to be able to farm for rare items for crafting.
Unfortunately I can only talk about chapter 1, but this is something I’ll be sure to address later!
@omensoffate training battles don’t drop items though
@@BacklogBattle They said you can still do random battles though, not just training. So you can get items from those random battles
@@thelegacyofgaming2928 there are no random battles. I’m on Chapter 3 and can confirm this.
@@BacklogBattle that is somewhat concerning. this is the only negative thing i'd ever even heard about this so far but I'm really hoping it gets circumvented somehow.
I don't don't like level scaling in games and it seems like another way to scale enemies to your level. Maybe when i play it won't be a problem but i don't like the idea. If i want to get as strong as i want i like to have the option at least.
I agree with you. However, the problem with the original was that the scaling became out of control, and over-leveling would basically scale the enemies too much. In this case, reaching the party level cap will still get you some sort of advantage, just not a “wow, I’m one shorting enemies” kind of advantage.
Coffee Potato also covered this and mentions that the Ogre Battle MOTBQ arrangements should be in the soundtrack. I would love to get it 100% confirmed.
I’ll try to keep an ear out for it! 😉
@@BacklogBattle awesome, songs like "Thunder", "Impregnable Defense" and "Viking Spirits" are such song titles. If they're 100% confirmed in the game, that will heighten the hype level up tenfold.
OH! Ok, so Impregnable Defense IS in the soundtrack, so some of these are probably series staples. I can definitely confirm at least that song!
@@BacklogBattle ooh ooh, this means Viking Spirits is most likely in as well. Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God! Hype level tenfold, I can't wait to hear a fully orchestrated version of my favorite song in the series, the PSP arrangement was stunning as is, can't imagine what it will be like with this one. Also, can you actually train on places like Tynemouth Hill? As in, initiate a battle where a random battle would previously take place?
Yes! You certainly can!
Can't wait for the game to come out!
Final Fantasy Tactics deserves this level of treatment
The trajectory thing isn't entirely new. It was a skill in the PSP version, but it only applied to ranged weapons, not spells. The ability to flatten the map during battle was also present in the PSP version, and that's actually how I learned to target the missile spells. You'd have to flatten the map and be able to draw a straight line between your mage and the target, otherwise the spell wouldn't hit. So you start to pick up on what things look like in the isometric view when a spell could hit, or what it looked like if an ally was in the way, etc. The pincer skill looks tight. It reminds me of the combo attack in FFTA, which units needed combo points to execute, but they were devastating.
Long time Ogre fan, but wasn't excited about the blur filter on units. Your points do make sense though, so hopefully I can get used to it.
Have you seen any performance issues on switch? I would hope not, but you never know with that console...
You're watching footage of Switch gameplay ;)
I am pumped for this. I have both the PS1 and PSP versions. I will immediately buy this one too
Great video! TO LUCT is one of my favorite games ever, the only thing I disliked of the changes was this card bonus thing, if I can I'll disable that
Unfortunate you can’t. It’s basically what makes the battlefield have a bit more replayability. Not everyone will like that of course, but it’s kinda neat that you have to alter your strategy slightly depending on what happens on the field.
To that end, it is super satisfying to get double or triple buffs! It’s not always feasible, but when you’re able to get that, you really feel the battle shift. That said, the enemy can do the same too, so you gotta be careful!
Finailly diving into some tactics ogre videos to get hyped! I was wondering if you had reviewed Triangle Strategy but couldn't spot a video, would be good to know your thoughts on that one.
Edit: Ah! You were only a few hours into it during this video.
Yep! I was only allowed to talk about Chapter 1!
Is there an option to turn off the smooth filter?
Since random battles are gone can you still click on places on the world map and do normal battles/grind for gear etc or are you forced to do training battles where you can’t die?
With the rogue being gone (super lame) did any other classes get the rouges skills or abilities?
Still not sold on only 4 skills and 4 spells when the OG has 8, feel like it’ll kill build variety
With TP seemingly gone now is it easier to just use OP spells and abilities early in the battle? That decision seems odd
Thanks for asking! Let me answer these questions now:
1. You can't turn off the smooth filter. That said, not all of the tiles are smooth! The brick work and some of the more detailed sprites are actually slightly pixelated if you look closely, so the whole game wasn't just thrown into a smoothing filter. There are things that still show up sharp! You can see this in the video. What seems to have happened is that the devs wanted the terrain to be clearly distinguishable from the sprite work, so blades of grass, while unclear in the footage, still implies blades of grass without adding too much visual detail. This effect is similar to that of focus in movies and TV, where the characters themselves are sharper and the environment blurs in the background to give focus to the character.
2. You cannot grind for gear and do normal battles on the world map outside of the story and side content, like Nybeth. I haven't felt the need to grind for gear so far, as the game is now tuned for players to have the right party composition and implement better strategies rather than just getting the best gear and having a high level. That said, there are side objectives in training battles that do reward various items and bonus experience that encourage you to explore the different classes. And you can also use the buff cards during battle to really beef up members of your party, which really changes things up, especially since enemies can pick these up too!
3. Yes! We just got the backstab skill in our playthrough, to which my wife said, "Wait. But we don't get rogue?" 😂 I'll have to check which class got it.
4. The removal of TP and making those abilities cost MP doesn't affect the balance of the game negatively, especially since both MP and TP have to build up over time in order for you to use skills. So things like the Warrior's Mighty impact for example costs 40 MP, and you'll have to wait until you get enough MP over the course of the battle in order to use it. Of course, you can use MP items to get a head start, but the AI's new situational awareness will adapt to that.
To add to your point about build variety, having fewer slots actually encourages build variety given that you have to deal with fewer slots. We've had to talk over which characters should have specific skills and build our characters in a way that some characters compliment others.
Hope this helps!
@@BacklogBattle awesome thanks for the detailed response! It’s put a lot of my worries to rest although I’m not sold on having to do trainer battles on the world map instead of normal battles with stakes and gear etc. one thing I loved about the game was there were some really hard tiles and certain maps with OP enemies that made it dangerous to cross or fun to farm and try to over come
I think the best I can hope for is they didn’t add this change to the several dungeons/palaces/bonus areas etc and that each tile still has a scripted battle when you cross them
I wouldn't worry much! The kind of peril that you felt when you face these enemies carries over to each battle now, especially given how crafty the AI is now. I had a fight in Chapter 1 last night where you fought the two gryphons and the beast tamer and I barely made it out alive on that one! Definitely felt different from when I played it on the PSP! So I guess what I'm saying is that with so many changes with the game, it's practically a new experience, so things can be unpredictable! It's like, you know how you played the game for the first time? It recaptures that feeling because so much has changed! It's really great!
@@sharebear421 It's been around 5 years since I last played, but I don't remember random battles ever being difficulty or "high stakes". I think it's better in most ways to select training from a menu and grind whenever you want instead of having to wander the map hoping to score a hit, so to speak. It's kind of hard to know how all of this will "feel" when it's all together and in your hands, so I wouldn't stress about the minute details just yet. I assume none of the concerns you have are big enough deals to keep you from giving this a go, so letting the little things get to you now just makes it harder to enjoy the experience later.
@@ScottLufkin there were plenty of map tiles or certain world map fights that were pretty challenging or at least fun and engaging with stuff you’d want to farm or units to recruit but that’s gone now with only training battles, not to mention you can’t die it kinda takes any type of strategy out of it. Personally that coupled with one of my favorite classes the rogue being oddly cut from the game (denam as a rogue Is my go to) 4 spell and ability limit and huge health pools the game is kinda making me iffy on a purchase. I’ll most likely wait and see and if need be just stick to the one vision mod of the psp game
Triangle strategy's sub voice acting cast is all star. Idk what youre talking about :)
Aha, good one!
is the background music in the video from the game? Ive played the crap out of Ogre Battle so im very familiar with the music. I barely played tactics ogre.. well other than knight of lodis.
Yes!
The training feature I think was inspired by the Triangle Strategy in the encampment training.
Potentially! We don’t have the details but you might be right
The training feature was in the GBA Tactics Ogre game Knight of Lodis. If you leveled up a character in training too much (20 levels I think?) The unit would get a debuff in the form of an emblem. (You get different emblems for fulfilling different requirements in battle). You could eventually negate the debuff with a different emblem, but I think the idea was to prevent people from spending all their time creating super soldiers in training mode instead of actual battles.
Training was from the psx version which they removed in the psp. Glad they put it back for the reborn version.
@@gulielmus9593 the emblem system with stats changes and classes unlocking was the one reason the gba version is my fav. I honestly hope they port it too (and remaster the musics)
@@markflores4192 how did they handle crafting on the PS1?
How much story is there? I absolutely loved the battles in Triangle Strategy but was so burnt out on the overblown story sections by the end. Will I enjoy this more or is it similar?
There’s definitely a more even mix of story and battles in this one!
I'm warry of the party lvl system
But the units being individual lvls makes me happy.
This def looks like a worthy buy with these changes. Yay
Do you have any concerns about it? I can probably answer some questions about it
@@BacklogBattle from the video, it seems there is a lvl cap based on where you are in the story.
So you are always at the same lvl?
Or did you mean the story lvls with you?
I love to grind units in these game and stuff. So I nervous over leveling could hurt me or if I hit a brick wall lvl gap it would hurt my experience.
When you hit certain story beats, the level cap increases. The whole goal of it was to ensure that you can't be overpowered when going into battle, so it's an attempt to preserve the difficulty of the game while fixing other issues. I've no extensive experience with the PSP version, but from what I've read, overleveling in the PSP version would bump the enemy tiers into a higher tier, making it super challenging for some players.
I think the more important thing though as opposed to getting hung up on details like these, though I'm aware many love these sorts of details, is how it plays. And as someone who is fairly new to tactical games, the battles are challenging but not impossible. That said, I have been slacking and not max capping my party, and fumbling with the wrong configuration and starting locations and not scouting properly, so that might have something to do with it. Otherwise, I'm confident that more experienced players will find things suitably challenging.
@@BacklogBattle oh I see.
So it is a full stop in lvl and you need to progress to make it higher.
I have not experienced that in a tactics game yet. So I dunno how to feel.
But thise video did make me more excited cause other stuff I like. I hope more jobs get added. That is always fun baha
@@leol2926 That's kind of what I'm experiencing is that the more you progress, the more fun jobs you encounter. So in a way, the grinding is still there - you can only bring a few people into battle, after all!
hyped for this but it is releasing at a busy time! my current order of play will be GOW, Pokemon, then this.
I'm actually putting Ragnarok in the backlog! Shocker!
Class rebalance? That's mean we don't need to build an archer army to face roll the game anymore? 🤔
11:12 . . . trajectory is a skill you can purchase in the psp version that does this for arrows and bolts .... I can't remember if it worked with spells also
Thanks. Several people have mentioned it in the comments. The biggest difference is that it’s not purchased anymore so everyone has this, including the people who can throw rocks.
I played this game a lot with my sister on PS1. We played against each other through Memoricards 1 vs 2. Did they remove multiplayer in this new version? ,😭
Yes they did
(17:40) Huh. Okay, so what happens when you recruit an Enemy Rogue Unit? Are you unable to invite them, ever? Or do you have to change their class the moment you recruit them?
Really good question! You’ve given me something to aim for!
i was already excited about this game, now i'm about to jump out of my skin. everything you said here makes me more excited for it. it'll be hard to hold off starting it, but i'm also midway thru harvestella and i'm really enjoying that one as well.
Can't wait!
I hope this dose good and that convinces them to make a new one and not just remaking the same game again
Amazing video!
Trajectory prediction was on the PSP. I played the crap out of it so I know.
Yeah exactly. It was an unlockable skill. There was a couple of other things he mentioned that were in the PSP version as well, like the top-down view of the battlefield. I'm guessing he didn't play the PSP version a whole lot.
It’s no longer an unlockable skill in this version. It’s just unlocked at the beginning with nothing extra to do, specially since the skill system was revamped.
Apologies if I’m stating things that aren’t new. As Capella says, I’ve merely dabbled in the PSP release to prepare for this video, which doesn’t compare to playing through the whole thing and being intimately familiar with everything. That said, I’m eager to enjoy the game as much as everyone else who has played the game before me!
making it a skill you had to learn was dumb and I'm glad it's back to being default
Please tell me the story seems more or less intact. I played the back on the playstation in the 90's and the story has always stuck with me.
Also to anyone that says the changes make it easy....the original had two exploits, one of which could be done early (chapter 1 I believe), that could get your whole party to level 50 with no danger. The other came later and you could get a unit with weight 1. For perspective that mean that unit would go every tick, and the fastest enemy unit was about weight 230. Meaning you would go 230 time to their 1. And since everyone started at maximum weight that one unit could win each and every battle, including the final one, with no weapon, before the enemy even got a turn. And mind you neither was hard to do or figure out. The first only required a very little patience and a very minor amount of luck, and the second was even easier to do. Also the training battles sound less like a new feature and more them bringing back one the PSP version removed.
The story is basically intact from the PSP version, which from what I read added some characters?
im hype with front mission 1 remake
It’s next month too right?
@@BacklogBattle yes sir
imagine that SE actually translates the game to your primary language 😊
😭😭😭
Wait what’s your primary language? 🤔
@@BacklogBattle spaghetti mandolino mafia bro 😢 i'm italian, i have no problem with english but still 😢
I think this has been a thing for the past year or two! There’s FIGS localizations (French Italian German Spanish) in a lot of games recently, so I’m hoping the trend continues!
@@BacklogBattle
PERFECT, thank you!
You’re welcome!
Triangle strategy voice acting is pretty stellar. Although I only used the Japanese one. I think the sprite work in triangle strategy is quite awesome for their mini cinematics. Especially for the dark or momentous scenes.
Tactics ogre strength is more around the combat. Either way, us tactics fans are eating well this season!!!
I think Japanese VOs mostly sound good because we don’t understand a lot of what it says 😅
I might pick it up when it's on sale but not at release. It's release date is in contention with a lot of other games and time is an issue.
alot has been rework that explain the price point but damn i dont know maybe ill buy on sale
excited for this game, but I honestly prefer Ogre Battle, it's just more unique. I wish Square would remake this game as well.
I'm amazed at how much effort is going into Reborn. Tactics Ogre has always lived in the shadow of Final Fantasy Tactics, and it would have been easy to slap together a lazy port of the PSP version. Imagine my surprise when I saw them going all out on the game like this.
My favorite feature is removing a class because it totally messed up with the AI and they are totally not thinking about selling it as a dlc
Do heals from clerics feel much better now? I remember the psp port being a remake where you’re better off hurling consumable items rather than casting healing magic?
This is negated by the skills functioning differently. To my knowledge, there’s only one way to get the lob skill and that’s the beast tamer leveling up. And you’d have to use a skill slot out of the four available.
