The transmission is probably the most misunderstood component of the modern day automobile. Pat dives in, to clarify some miss understandings associated to this component.
GF's 2012 Prius-V has "lifetime" trans fluid. Looked it up, there is a fill and drain plug, capacity 3.75 quarts. Picked up the Toyota (Aisin) fluid and two new washers. Took less than 20 minutes!
First I must say RIP Mr Goss, he was the best source of knowledge, I liked his no nonsense, straight to the information style, a trait not found much today. I was very surprised when I saw the comments on this video to say the least. I believe I still have factory transmission fluid that is from 2006 (a bit past 3yr/36k mi)still in my Vibe with 170k still works fine, but I have heard that flushing old, old fluid that’s never been changed could damage the transmission and cause problems, true or no? Is just full and draining okay?
My name is Alan Goss. I’m sad to just now be finding this channel. Would have loved to know if us two gear heads were related. My wife and I run this channel. RIP.
I still want that filter changed so best procedure is to still drop the pan to change the filter also. In addition, I've always dropped the pan every 30k miles or so and refilled. Sure, didn't get everything out but doing this regularly keeps the fluid in acceptable condition. The biggest risk in transmission flushes are the operator doing the flush, broken cooler line connections and use of the wrong transmission fluid by the operator. My shop and Mr. Goss, we know how to do it right and use the right fluid...... your average jiffy lube or other fast lube joint doesn't stock all the right fluids and that's a disaster.
….that’s the problem, trusting the service advisor (SA) to provide reliable information. As a customer, you need to verify the information from SA, especially nowadays Internet can provide wealth of information.
I've heard opposites on this from various experts and can never decide who to go with. Some mechanics say do only a pan drop every 30,000 miles or 3 years as a full flush is bad as it cleans it too well and some grit is needed in the system. Then other mechanics say do a full flush to clean it all out as a pan drop doesn't replace everything.
You can drain a modern trans (not CVT) and measure the amount that comes out and put that much back. On my son's highlander after we drained we started the trans in neutral and another quart came out from the torque converter. Then we measured the total coming out and put that much back in. We didn't put it in gear. This was 40,000 miles ago and we used maxlife. Time to do it again. Did it drove it a couple weeks, did it again.
Rest In Peace.
Tough loss. Grew up with my dad watching Motorweek. RIP Mr. Goss

Just saw a clip on instagram and immediately recognized his voice. A wealth of knowledge!
I’ve been told 3 drain and fills a week apart gets most of the fluid. I’ve had problems with flushing them.
